A Second Life for Loved Toys
①Charlotte Liebling noticed something interesting while working at a secondhand store. She saw people carefully giving their soft toys away, which clearly held special memories. However, these beloved toys often ended up being sold for very low prices or even thrown away as trash.
②After doing some research, Liebling discovered a surprising fact—millions of soft toys end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场) every year around the world. This discovery inspired her to start the Loved Before project in 2019, which gives old toys new homes and new stories.
③Here’s how the project works: First, people can give away their used toys either by mailing them or dropping them off at collection places in the UK. Each toy comes with its own special story written by its owner, including its name, personality, and favorite activities. The Loved Before team then carefully cleans each toy and takes nice photos of it. Every Monday, these cleaned toys with their stories are posted on the website, ready to be adopted by new owners.
④An important part of the project is that over 50% of the money from each toy sale goes to help other good causes. Since starting, Loved Before has successfully found new homes for more than 50,000 soft toys.
⑤Liebling explains that the project is about more than just saving toys. “These toys don’t lose their value just because they’ve been loved before,” she says. The real goal is to change how people think about used objects and to teach the importance of giving things a second chance.

My husband built a small two-floor house for our Little Free Library. It looked exactly like our own house. Both of us love reading, so instead of taking boxes of books to a used book sale, we now place them in this little library near the street to share them with others.
Over the past 15 years, thousands of books have been shared through our little library. Sometimes, people also leave DVDs and CDs. Our library is on a busy street near a subway station, so many people pass by every day.
The library has become a special part of our neighborhood. One man often takes books from our library to share with people at a nearby old people’s home. Other people have left us cards, chocolates, and even a drawing from a local artist to show their thanks.
The books in our library show the diversity of our city. Most books are in English, but we also often see Arabic, French, and Russian books. I even keep some books in languages I don’t understand because I enjoy collecting different ones. Interestingly, the library hasn’t helped us reduce the number of books in our home—we now have more books than ever!
Some people think Little Free Libraries compete with bookstores. But for us, this hasn’t been true. We still buy books and use the bookstores often. The difference is our Little Free Library has connected us to book lovers and helped us share the joy of reading in our busy neighborhood.
30.What is the Little Free Library according to the text?
A.A small house for sharing books. B.The writer’s new house to live in.
C.A big market to read and sell books. D.A library for old people in the city.
31.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.Things readers forget to take away.
B.Ways to pay for the books in the library.
C.People’s love for the special library.
D.The writer’s opinion on local people.
32.What is the meaning of the underlined word “diversity” in the text?
A.Things that are almost the same. B.Experiences from the past.
C.Something that looks very nice. D.Many kinds of cultures or ideas.
33.What is probably the writer’s attitude (态度) towards bookstores?
A.Doubtful. B.Supportive. C.Disappointed. D.Unclear.

The volunteers in it are not only made up of diving (潜水)coaches like Liu, but also pilots, lawyers, doctors and so on. All of them should have the knowledge of the sea.
Every year, 12 million tons of plastic waste flows into the ocean. Sea animals often lose their lives because of eating plastic or fishing nets. Even humans are impacted because the fish we eat may have harmful plastic in their bodies. So the community Better Blue was started in 2017. It hopes to invite people to protect the sea animals and encourage people to think about how to make the ocean develop in a friendly way.
“Dive Against Debris” is an activity held by Better Blue to protect the ocean. The activity needs volunteers with greater diving skills. In this project, divers go into the waters and fish out rubbish, which is then separated into different groups. They do this in the bay area of Shenzhen every month. The work also includes checking which rubbish often appears in the area, doing a research on why this kind of rubbish is the most and making suggestions to reduce the pollution.
Marine (海洋的) protection is not limited to collecting rubbish. It also includes marine protection education. On weekdays, Liu volunteers to teach children marine protection in local schools. Volunteers like him make children realize that land-based rubbish can also pollute the ocean. Researchers from local universities also take part in such activities.
With diving becoming popular, people are more willing to learn about marine protection. They come with their equipment, dive into the waters, get to know the underwater world and protect it.

Did you know that helping out in your community can be good for you, too? A new study says that kids who do voluntary work through school or community groups might be healthier.
The study looked at kids who did community service and those who didn’t. It found that the kids who helped out were much more likely to be healthy. That is, kids aged 12 and up who volunteered were less likely to feel worried compared to those who didn’t volunteer.
But remember, this study can only show that there might be a relationship between volunteering and health. It doesn’t prove that volunteering is the reason for better health. Maybe people who are already healthy have more energy to volunteer.
Still, this news is important because more young people are feeling worried these days. About 40% of high school students have said they sometimes feel sad or hopeless. So, it’s very important to care about kids’ health.
Maybe doing good things for your community can help kids feel better. This isn’t the only study that thinks so. Other studies with adults have also found that volunteering can be good for health. Helping others can make you feel like you’re part of something important and can bring you closer to the people around you. So, why not try volunteering? It might be good for your health, too.
31.What did the recent study find about kids who volunteer?
A.They feel unhappier and more worried.
B.They don’t have enough energy for study.
C.They are more likely to have better health.
D.They are less likely to join in school activities.
32.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Health. B.Volunteering. C.The study. D.Community service.
33.Why is this news really important?
A.Because most of high school students feel hopeless.
B.Because volunteering is the reason for better health.
C.Because community service is becoming more popular.
D.Because the number of young people with worry has risen.
34.According to the article, what might volunteering do for people?
A.Cause their success. B.Improve their connection.
C.Achieve their purpose. D.Increase their importance.
35.What could be the best title of the text?
A.Volunteering: A Path to Better Health
B.Volunteering: Bringing People Closer
C.Volunteering: Helping the Community
