UNIT 2 Making a difference
When a couple living in South Carolina recently sold what had been their “dream house”, they were sure they had worked out all the details before the sale. Repairs had been made, the paperwork had been all in order, and they had removed their belongings from the home in which they had spent the last 32 years — or so they thought.
A few days after the sale was finished, James and Clarrisa Munford discovered the treasure — 50 gold and silver coins, which the former owners had hidden and forgotten all about. To the Munfords’ great surprise, the coins were worth as much as 15,000 dollars. And according to experts, the coins were legally the Munfords’ property, and they had the right to sell the coins quietly and pocket the profits.
However, the Munfords, who own a restaurant in Columbia, almost immediately chose to get in touch with the original owners of the house and return the coins to them, which had been left inside a built-in drawer in the home. “There is an old saying, ‘You reap what you sow,’” said the original owner, Mr Miller, who was quite surprised. “My wife and I spent a lot of time repairing the house to ensure that we left our home in excellent condition for the Munfords, and our kindness was certainly returned by another! It wasn’t until the kind couple contacted us that we became aware of the hidden coins.”
Mr Miller said he wanted to share this story to give hope and inspiration to others during their extremely difficult times. “Now it is a good time to pause and think about how we treat each other. If there were more people like the Munfords, the world would be a much better place,” Mr Miller said.
