My first term at MIT (麻省理工学院) was awesome—I got all A's, and I declared maths as my major. My parents were expecting me to become a doctor like them so I was trying to satisfy them. But I was desperately running away from them. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. My third term, I ended up with a D in maths. I didn't do that well in my other classes, either. It seemed like all my friends were doing so well, getting opportunities over the summers.
My fifth term, I realised that I was awful at higherlevel maths. I had lost all confidence in myself. I went to a few classes at the beginning of the term, but after midterm, I had totally stopped. My only relief was the dance team I was in. I would sleep all day, and then go to dance practice, and then go back to sleep. As expected, I failed in all of my classes and had to withdraw from MIT.
I had no choice but to tell my parents. Instead of yelling at or hitting me, though, they just held me and cried. The next day, my dad took a day off from work and took me to a nearby, small college.
I had lost all confidence in myself. Before my first biology test, I didn't think I could pass. I did pass. Since I had so much free time, I decided to join a biology lab. I realised that was what I wanted to do! I wanted to be a scientist!
This past May, I graduated with the highest honours, and now I have my PhD in biology. Though it ended up taking me 5 years to graduate from college, I can say now that dropping out of MIT was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I've realised that a person is not their grades. I've realised how much my parents loved me. I've finally discovered my passion (激情) in life!
1.How was the author's first term at MIT?
A.He was busy with exams.
B.He knew his goals clearly.
C.He did well in all subjects.
D.He was fed up with maths.
由第一段中的“My first term at MIT was awesome—I got all A's...”
2.How did the author's parents react to his failure at MIT?
A.They hit him.
B.They yelled at him.
C.They quitted their jobs to teach him.
D.They forgave him for what he did.
由第三段中的“Instead of yelling at or hitting me, though, they just held me and cried. The next day, my dad took a day off from work and took me to a nearby, small college.”
3.In the new college, the author ________.
A.rebuilt his confidence
B.volunteered at many labs
C.found it hard to learn biology
D.hated the learning environment
根据第四段中的“Before my first biology test,I didn't think I could pass. I did pass. Since I had so much free time, I decided to join a biology lab. I realised that was what I wanted to do!I wanted to be a scientist!”
4.What do we know about the author from the last paragraph?
A.He felt sorry for his parents.
B.He discovered his true interest.
C.He realised the importance of grades.
D.He felt ashamed of his failure at MIT.

After decades of cat and mouse between athletes and the World AntiDoping Agency (WADA), athletes found what they must have believed to be the ultimate (终极的) doping agent: their own blood. To enhance athletic performance with your own blood, you draw your blood and store it in a freezer. Your body compensates by creating more blood. Then, months later, just before a competition, you can reinject (再注射) the old blood for a boost. As the redbloodcell count goes up, so does an athlete's ability to absorb oxygen. The more oxygen you get with each breath, the more energy your body is able to burn off and the better you are able to perform.
Although the enhancement is small compared to actual drugs, it can be the difference between a gold medal and a silver medal. Best of all, “extra blood” was never something WADA tested for.
But WADA wasn't going to sit by and be fooled. What it came up with in response might be a solution to stopping doping once and for all: an athlete biological passport (ABP). The idea is to record some biological features of an athlete through testing done at regular intervals. The biological passport's partial implementation (实施)—recording blood and steroid levels—began in January 2014.
When all necessary biological features are finally combined, WADA will no longer need to worry about finding new methods to detect (检测) a drug. It will only have to detect resulting changes in the body. In the case of blood doping, if an athlete's normal redbloodcell count is, say, 47%, but then is found to be 51% after a competition, cheating may have been involved.
WADA is confident that the biological passport could even prevent genetic changes—the ultimate, everlasting enhancement—which are surely coming next. If an athlete inserts a performanceenhancing gene, it will probably leave detectable changes in the body, which would differ from the athlete's features in the biological passport.
5.What does the underlined word “boost” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Treatment. B.Test.
C.Promotion. D.Recovery.
根据第一段倒数第二句“As the redbloodcell count goes up, so does an athlete's ability to absorb oxygen.”
6.What words can be used to describe the athlete biological passport?
A.Complex and expensive.
B.Simple and thorough.
C.Flexible and popular.
D.Controversial and confusing.
根据第四段第二句“It will only have to detect resulting changes in the body.”可知,运动员生物护照只需要检测身体变化就可以判断运动员是否使用了违禁药物,因此它是简单易操作的;且根据第五段第一句“WADA is confident that the biological passport could even prevent genetic changes—the ultimate, everlasting enhancement—which are surely coming next.”
7.What is the writer's attitude towards the solution of antidoping mentioned in the text?
A.Suspicious. B.Positive.
C.Worried. D.Unconcerned.
根据第四段第一句“When all necessary biological features are finally combined, WADA will no longer need to worry about finding new methods to detect a drug.”
8.What can we infer about the athlete biological passport?
A.It can only be used to test blood doping.
B.It has been completely adopted by WADA.
C.It is the excellent alternative for many athletes.
D.It's a good choice to ensure fairness in sports.
根据第三段第二句“What it came up with in response might be a solution to stopping doping once and for all: an athlete biological passport (ABP).”
