My uncle George lives with people who share similar experiences, simplifying his life by not using smartphones or the Internet. He only communicates via face-to-face talks and old-fashioned home phone calls. A big smile and wave, which are his usual greetings, appear when his face lights up at the sight of me. He often says I look nice, and a warm bond keeps us close.
George and I are very dear to each other, and I’m proud to have his name as my middle name. When I was five, I asked my parents straight what was “wrong” with him — I was too young to be polite. They softly explained he wasn’t “broken”; he just has a mental disability.
Years ago, George would often ask for my phone number, write it down, and then stop calling because he lost the paper. This went on for years until six years ago, when he memorized my number. Since then, he calls me ten times a day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., 365 days a year without fail. I love him very much, but I only answer about two calls each day.
Our calls follow three fun made-up roles from his mind: He acts as my dad and tells me off for using bad words. He pretends to be Major Winchester from the 1970s TV show MASH, and I’m his soldier reporting for duty; or we are both lifeguards planning to save a drowning person. I play along, and we laugh loudly before he pauses and says, “Tommy, you’re the best guy I know.” I reply, “So are you. We’re two good pals!” He asks about my dinner, and then says he’ll call back earlier than planned.
These regular calls are my comfort when life is hard. Those short, cheerful chats always calm me down when I feel upset or tired. George doesn’t understand adult life, but his steady love helps me get through each day, just a little bit.
4. What do we know about George’s life?
A. He lives on his own. B. He lives a simple life.
C. He uses a mobile phone. D. He hates face-to-face talks.
5. What can we infer about the 5-year-old author?
A. He was kind of straightforward. B. He led a carefree life.
C. He had a bad memory. D. He disliked George’s phone calls.
6. What’s the author’s attitude to George’s calls?
A. Hateful. B. Worried. C. Thankful. D. Proud.
7. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A To explain mental disability. B. To introduce role-play games.
C. To show George’s painful life. D. To share his bond with George.
C
In a recent Instagram post, McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said people often ask how often he eats at fast-food chains. “I eat there a lot — three or four times a week,” he shared. “Sometimes it’s breakfast, sometimes lunch. That’s one of the job’s advantages: I get to eat at McDonald’s often.”
Many other restaurant CEOs also share their favorite foods from their own chains. Before becoming Starbucks’ CEO, Brian Niccol loved Chipotle’s chicken roll bowl — with white rice, fresh mixed vegetables, cheese, plus soft green fruit. “It’s more than I should eat at my age, but it’s hard to resist,” he told Fortune last year. And Red Lobster CEO Damola Adamolekun also shared his favorite menu item at the seafood chain. It used to be snow crab (蟹), but it has changed to the Bairdi crab. “I tried the dish recently, which is similar to snow crab, and that is my new favorite,” he told the Wall Street Journal last year.
Meanwhile, Kempczinski is dealing with a tricky restaurant landscape as rising prices remain sticky while customers continue to look to McDonald’s for affordable food. Earlier this year, the company cut prices on its set meals after many customers complained that they had gotten too expensive. Kempczinski acknowledged the issue, saying in an earnings report that “you’re seeing set meals priced over $10, and that absolutely is hurting its value impression”
Consumers are also increasingly bifurcated (分化). Lower-income diners are cutting back, treating fast food less as a daily convenience and more as an occasional pleasure. “Particularly with middle-and-lower-income consumers, they’re feeling under a lot of pressure right now,” Kempczinski added. “There’s a lot of talk around, ‘What’s the present state of the economy? How’s it doing right now?’ And what we see is, it’s really kind of a two-part economy. If you’re upper-income, earning over $100,000, things are good. What we see with middle-and-lower-income consumers, it’s actually a different story.”
8. What could be an advantage of Kempczinski’s job?
A. Free-of-charge McDonald’s meals. B. Frequently eating McDonald’s meals.
C. Trying new products earlier. D. Choosing meal time freely
9. What’s the reason for McDonald’s price cuts?
A. Its meal prices were too high. B. Its CEO required price reduction.
C. It lost many regular customers. D. It received customer complaints.
10. What may make middle-and-lower-income people stressed?
A. Unstable daily food prices. B. The current economic state.
C. Low salaries of fast-food fields. D. Changeable working environment.
11. What will the author talk about next?
A. McDonald’s new desserts. B. Red Lobster’s crab dishes.
C. Fast-food brand price wars. D. Fast-food trends nowadays.
D
Grains (谷物) might be ignored by some people who follow special eating styles, but they’re warmly welcomed by nutrition experts — especially whole grains. These grains are linked to a lower risk of many health problems and are packed with valuable nutrients. Given their great health benefits, a key question arises: What makes a grain “whole”?
A whole grain is a seed that grows into corn, wheat, or other common grains. It has three parts: the outer hard layer, the middle part that makes up most of the grain, and a small inner seed. If these three parts exist in a food in the same proportions as in the complete grain, it’s considered “whole grain”, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) .
Historically, we’ve been eating whole grains for about 50,000 years. But it’s been just about 150 years since we began eating refined (精制的) grains, which started after the invention of a grain-crushing machine that removes the outer hard layer and the small inner seed. When whole grains are turned into refined grains, these two parts are removed — taking fiber, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats with them. What’s left is mostly the middle part of the seed, which is mainly a type of sugar with some protein and little else.
To make up for some of these lost nutrients, thiamin, as well as other B vitamins and iron are added back to the “enriched rice” and “enriched flour” sold in the US and other countries. But expert Slavin notes many important nutrients are not replaced, including plant-based nutrients and some minerals. Another big loss from refining is fiber — whole wheat pasta (面团) has more than twice as much fiber as regular pasta. Eating lots of fiber brings many health benefits: Compared to low-fiber diets, high-fiber diets lower the risk of heart disease and stroke by 15 to 30 percent. “Yet only 4 percent of Americans meet the fiber guidelines; lack of whole grains might be the main reason,” suggests Slavin.
12. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To show facts about fiber eating. B. To compare two types of grains.
C. To explain a principle. D. To introduce the topic.
13. What is special about the middle part of a whole grain?
A. It is the largest part. B. It has very little fiber.
C It tastes sweet naturally D. It is thin and soft inside.
14. What do the underlined words in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. A machine for planting grains. B. A machine for breaking grains.
C. A machine for carrying grains. D. A machine for keeping grains.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The process of refined grains. B. Americans’ lack of dietary fiber.
C. FDA’s standards for whole grains. D. The high nutrition of whole grains.

How Autumn Helps Us Build Inner (内在的) Strength
Autumn often makes people feel uneasy, for the days get shorter, the air turns cool and fresh, and leaves start to fall from trees. ____16____ But there’s a bright side: Autumn can also help us become stronger.
Jelena Kecmanovic, a skilled psychologist (心理学家) who helps people with mind troubles, has focused on inner strength and health for years. She spent her first 20 years in a peaceful part of Yugoslavia, where life felt full of promise. Then war broke out, and she had to leave her home during the four-year fighting. ____17____ Because of this, she now sees autumn as the perfect time to learn to accept uncertainty — the small, uneasy feeling when we leave our usual summer habits.
____18____ Such people dislike not knowing what will happen next, and this can make them feel bad. But Kecmanovic says we can change this. Instead of running away from uncertainty, we can face it. Doing small things to try new and unknown things can help us become stronger. You might ride a bike through a place you’ve never visited, without a map. You might go out on a long autumn night to look at the stars, even if the sky feels too dark. ____19____
You might get lost. You might get wet all over. You might feel like you’re wasting time. ____20____ As Kecmanovic puts. it: “It’s not about being sure what will happen in the next. hour, day or year. It’s about thinking, ‘I’m alive right now. And that’s enough.’”
A. Experts advise easing seasonal anxiety by resting quietly.
B. It improves focus at work and helps deal with uncertainty.
C. For some people, it even brings the first feelings of sadness.
D. Or you might walk on a day when rain might strike anytime.
E. Psychologists say many people find it hard to face uncertainty.
F. But such moments make you get used to feeling out of control.
G. These tough life experiences shaped her views on strength and change.

For months,14-year-old Charlie spent hours on music practice, fueled by a passion that made every note feel like a joy. His big dream was to submit his original piece Sunny Afternoon — a work inspired by his weekend violin practice sessions (一段时间) — to the school’s music magazine. This time, the magazine partnered with a city youth club to select just 10 pieces for a live showcase, making it a rare and precious opportunity for Charlie.
His best friends Jake and Mia were always by his side. After school, they would sit in the music room, listening to his violin practice and calling out excitedly, “This part feels like running through a sunny park. It’s so lively and warm!”
Just as he was preparing to record the final violin version of his piece, disaster struck unexpectedly. During a PE class basketball game, Charlie jumped to catch the ball, lost his balance, and landed hard on his right wrist — the very hand he used to hold the violin bow. The doctor’s words broke his hope: He would need to keep his right wrist still for at least two months, making it impossible for him to play the violin at all.
“My dream’s over,” he whispered, hot tears wetting his bandage. He tucked (收起) his violin away in a box, stopped mentioning the magazine, and even pulled away from Jake and Mia, worried they’d see him as someone who gave up too easily.
Charlie’s music teacher, Ms. Carter, who’d watched him pour his heart into Sunny Afternoon, noticed his low spirits and pulled him aside after class one day. “Your love for music isn’t just about playing the violin,” she said softly, pulling up a simple music app on her computer. “What if you try this? You can type notes, choose instruments, and piece your tune together, all with your left hand.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Charlie had never used music software before, so he felt nervous at first.

A Its meal prices were too high.
B 9. D 10. B 11. D

根据第四段中的““Particularly with middle-and-lower-income consumers, they’re feeling under a lot of pressure right now,” Kempczinski added. “There’s a lot of talk around, ‘What’s the present state of the economy? How’s it doing right now?’ And what we see is, it’s really kind of a two-part economy. If you’re upper-income, earning over $100,000, things are good. What we see with middle-and-lower-income consumers, it’s actually a different story.”(“尤其是中低收入消费者,他们目前正承受着巨大的压力。”肯普钦斯基补充道,“当下有很多人在议论,‘当前的经济状况如何?现在发展得怎么样?’而我们观察到的实际情况是,经济形势其实呈现出两极分化的态势。如果你属于年收入超过10万美元的高收入群体,那么日子过得还算不错。但中低收入消费者的处境,却是另一番光景。”)”可知,当下的经济状况让中低收入人群感到压力。故选B项。

C. It tastes sweet naturally D.
D 13. A 14. B 15. D

根据第一段中的“Grains (谷物) might be ignored by some people who follow special eating styles, but they’re warmly welcomed by nutrition experts — especially whole grains. These grains are linked to a lower risk of many health problems and are packed with valuable nutrients. Given their great health benefits, a key question arises: What makes a grain “whole”?
根据第二段中的“A whole grain is a seed that grows into corn, wheat, or other common grains. It has three parts: the outer hard layer, the middle part that makes up most of the grain, and a small inner seed. (全谷物是一种可以长成玉米、小麦或其他常见谷物的种子。它由三部分组成:外层的硬壳、构成谷物主体的中间部分以及内部的小籽。)”可知,全谷物中间部分的特殊性在于它是占比最大的部分。故选A项。
根据第三段中的“But it’s been just about 150 years since we began eating refined (精制的) grains, which started after the invention of a grain-crushing machine that removes the outer hard layer and the small inner seed.

故填an。
故填and。
根据固定搭配be designed to do sth.,意为“被设计用来做某事”可知,此处使用动词不定式形式to analyze。故填to analyze。
故填was adopted/had been adopted。
故填its。

故填which。

Dear Smith,
I’m writing to share an unforgettable experience from our School Sports Meeting last Saturday, where I took part in the 800-meter race.
At the start, I ran smoothly with full energy. But halfway through, my legs felt heavy and my breathing became uneven. I even wanted to give up. However, the loud cheers from my classmates gave me strength. I tried my best and kept pushing forward until I crossed the finish line.
Though I didn’t win a prize, this experience taught me a valuable lesson. Perseverance is the key to overcoming difficulties. It will always remind me to never give up when facing challenges.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Charlie had never used music software before, so he felt nervous at first.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Charlie had never used music software before, so he felt nervous at first. Fortunately, Ms. Carter stayed after school to walk him through the basics. Jake and Mia also joined in to help out. Under Ms. Carter’s guidance, Charlie gradually mastered how to pick the right notes and adjust the rhythm. Now his frustration faded away, and a spark of hope arose in his chest. When he finally finished the digital version of Sunny Afternoon, he submitted it to the magazine, feeling a wave of pride.
Finally came the day when the magazine’s new issue was released. Charlie was a little nervous as he met Jake and Mia on the way to school. When they reached the school hall, he looked through the magazine with trembling fingers. Suddenly, his eyes widened in disbelief. Sunny Afternoon had made it into the top10! The three hugged tightly, cheering softly. Later, he found Ms. Carter and said, “Thank you for helping me see there’s another way to make music.” Standing there, Charlie finally understood: Dreams don’t fade when one door closes and new paths will always show up.
