Four Best Beach Spots in South Carolina
Morris Island
What was once a war fort (堡垒) is now an island without residents in the Charleston Harbor marked by the state’s tallest lighthouse. Today, this island is only accessible by boat. While boat rentals are available, it is highly recommended that visitors book one of the tours that will take you to the island with a local expert who can tell you all about the area’s history and marine life.
Huntington Beach State Park
Located between Myrtle Beach and Georgetown, Huntington Beach State Park offers historic sites, fishing, hiking, guided walks, and, of course, a three-mile beach. There are over 300 species of birds here, making the park a wonderland for birders. Visitors can also spot deer, sea turtles, and more. Plus, camping is available at the park for those who want to spend more time enjoying its natural beauty.
Surfside Beach
Also known as “The Family Beach”, Surfside Beach’s focus on families goes beyond its nickname—it identified itself as the first autism-friendly (自闭症友好) travel destination in the world in January 2016. Visitors can approach the sandy beach from 36 different entry points, some of which provide wheel chair access. There are also mini-golf courses and plenty of restaurants to choose from.
Fripp Island
Head for this small region for kayaking, golfing, and breathtaking natural views. Watch some of the 175 species of birds that live along the ocean and salt marsh(沼泽), or other local animals such as alligators, dolphins, and loggerhead turtles. Book a place with a marsh view at Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort to enjoy pools, on-site dining, and the busy activity center.

Henry is a doctor at a famous hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. His mom, Dr. Sophia, 56, has been practicing medicine for the last 32 years and joined the same hospital as a professor last August.
In May, the talented pair teamed up for operation, an unexpected opportunity Henry stepped up for. Even though the case was new to him, Henry jumped at the chance. When the day came, Sophia was pleased to have Henry by her side. Henry said it was a memorable experience. The patient has done well since the operation and was even excited that the mother-son team would be taking care of her.
“When Henry was 7, I began showing him books about medicine instead of reading story-books to him at times. He was really curious about the books and looked through them carefully. The first case that he saw was me working on a heart operation when he was 11. And instead of being some nervous kid standing behind the screen there, he was actually pretty quiet. And I could tell from speaking with him afterwards that he’d really been closely observing it. After. that, I regularly chatted with him about medical cases,” Sophia said.
Henry said that the experience was one that would stick with him for good. “Seeing that as an 11-year-old was also just pretty wild,” he said. “It was really cool to see that my mom was the one who pieced the whole team together. Since then; I have always admired my mom’s professional skills and referred to her as my role model.”
Henry is aiming to dig into medical research next year. “Our paths have crossed at this point, and there is still a lot more to go,” Henry said. At the same time, Sophia added, “What can be better? I taught this kid how to ride a bicycle many years ago. Now, to get to teach him how to operate on a human heart is pretty mind-blowing.”
4. How was the surgery cooperation between Sophia and Henry?
A. Simple. B. Successful. C. Advanced. D. Insignificant.
5. What message can we get from the third paragraph?
A. Henry’s interest in medicine started at an early age.
B. Henry was alarmed when seeing his mom operating.
C. Sophia failed to maintain a close relationship with Henry.
D. Sophia’s tight schedule stopped her from tending Henry.
6. What do Henry’s words in Paragraph 4 imply?
A. He found his mom’s work challenging. B. His learning experience was enjoyable.
C. He is as professional as his mom in medicine. D. His mom mattered a lot in his career choice.
7. In which section of a website may we read the text?
A. Science and society. B. Medicine and health.
C. Family and education. D. Culture and lifestyle.

One of the most important impacts of AI is in the field of education, where tools like ChatGPT have already begun to change how students learn and teachers teach. But as AI develops, a new player is entering the scene: DeepSeek.
DeepSeek is not just another AI tool — it’s an intelligent platform designed to address the unique needs of the education field. One of the biggest challenges in education is meeting the diverse learning needs of students. DeepSeek can analyze individual learning patterns and adapt contents accordingly. For example, if a student struggles with math, DeepSeek can provide personalized exercises and explanations to help them master the concepts. This level of personalization goes beyond what ChatGPT currently offers, making DeepSeek a powerful tool for individualized instruction.
To understand how DeepSeek’s personalization works in practice, consider a real-world example from a high school in California, which uses DeepSeek to address the diverse learning needs of its students. By analyzing performance data, DeepSeek identifies that about 30% of students are struggling with physics. It then provides personalized exercises and video lessons to help these students catch up. Within a few months, the school sees a 20% improvement in physics test scores.
Rather than viewing DeepSeek and ChatGPT as competitors, it’s more reasonable to see them as complementary (互补的) tools. ChatGPT can handle general tasks like answering questions or producing contents, while DeepSeek focuses on specialized educational applications. Together, they can create an all-round AI-powered learning ecosystem.
As we look to the future, one thing is clear: AI tools like DeepSeek and ChatGPT are not just improving education — they’re reshaping it. Whether you’re a student, teacher, or institution, now is the time to embrace these technologies and unlock their full potential (潜能).
8. What is the advantage of DeepSeek over ChatGPT in education?
A. It seeks deeper into resources. B. It provides entertainment content.
C. It meets students’ individual needs. D. It is more popular in American schools.
9. How is paragraph 3 developed?
A. By listing people’s opinions. B. By giving an example.
C. By defining some concepts. D. By making an explanation.
10. What may be the author’s attitude towards DeepSeek and ChatGPT?
A. DeepSeek suits students better. B. They are future competitors.
C. ChatGPT fails to handle tasks. D. They can make up for each other.
11. What does the underlined word “embrace” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Accept. B. Control C. Teach. D. Improve.
D
For over two thousand years, scientists and philosophers have been puzzled by a simple question: how can plants, without eyes, grow toward light? While animals use eyes to detect the direction of light, plants seem to have no such organ. So how do they do it?
Early Greek thinkers believed plants could sense and react to their environment — almost like animals. But Aristotle later argued that plants were passive, unable to perceive or respond to the world around them. His view influenced Western thought for centuries.
However, a team of European researchers has now uncovered the secret. They focused on Arabidopsis, a small weed commonly used in plant genetics. Using advanced imaging techniques such as confocal microscopy, the scientists measured how light passes through the plant’s stem. Their results, published in a recent study, showed that the air channels between the plant’s cells scatter the light, bending it significantly as it travels through the tissue. Once researcher noted, “It’s like the plant has thousands of tiny lenses.” This scattering creates subtle differences in light intensity across the stem, allowing the plant to pinpoint the light’s direction accurately.
In other words, the plant doesn’t need eyes. Instead, it uses its entire body to sense light. This clever mechanism lets seedlings “see” where the light is coming from and adjust their growth toward it.
The findings not only solve an ancient mystery but also challenge Aristotle’s idea that plants are passive. It turns out that plants have evolved a sophisticated way to perceive their environment — without the need for complex organs like eyes. They are far more active and adaptive than we once thought.
This research opens new questions for plant biologists. How are these air channels formed? How exactly do plants process the light information? Understanding these mechanisms could help us learn more about how plants interact with the world — and perhaps even inspire new technologies in light sensing and robotics.
12. How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph?
A. By making a comparison. B. By presenting a puzzle.
C. By stating a phenomenon. D. By quoting a philosopher.
13. What is the key finding of the European researchers’ study?
A. Plant cells contain special proteins that respond to light.
B. Arabidopsis has a unique genetic structure for light sensing.
C. Light intensity varies significantly in different plant tissues.
D. Plants use air channels as tiny lenses to detect light direction.
14. What is the significance of the research findings?
A. They explain the formation of air channels. B. They reveal plants’ passive growth pattern.
C. They challenge traditional views of plants. D. They confirm Aristotle’s theory about plants.
15. What might be the future impact of this research?
A. Faster plant growth. B. Better light sensors.
C. Stronger leaf formation. D. More robot production.

A few years ago, the Christmas Eve was snowless, warm and sunny. It looked and felt much like a late fall day. Everything was brown. Even though there was no snow, somehow it still felt like Christmas.
In the mid-afternoon, my friend Theresa phoned me and said excitedly, “I got a bicycle!” “A bicycle for Christmas?” I asked. I was confused because she already had a bicycle — a ten-speed. But she explained her landlady had cleaned out a garage (车库) and offered her a child’s bicycle. We lived just a few blocks from each other, so I drove over to see it. It was a girl’s pink bike with a bell, a basket and a banana seat. It wasn’t new and was thick with dust, needing much time to get cleaned, but it was in quite good condition.
Theresa was a tall woman, and this was a child’s bicycle. There was no way she could ever ride it, but it still excited her. “I was just so happy to get a bicycle, like when I was a little kid,” she said cheerfully.
“But you can’t ride it,” I said and asked what she was going to do with it. “I’m not sure. Maybe, I’ll just give it to my brother’s daughter as a Christmas gift,” she answered. “But I know she already has a bike which is also in good condition,” I replied. “Yeah. But this one is more beautiful than hers. Besides, having another bike will surely make her proud and enable her to be admired by her little friends,” she laughed.
Suddenly, I thought of my co-worker, John, who was a single father raising three children: an older boy, another around twelve, and an eight-year-old daughter.
Life was very hard for the family. His eldest boy often looked after the younger kids while John was at work. it was quite difficult for John to buy food and get Christmas gifts for his kids.
I wished Theresa would send the bike to John’s daughter. But I feared Theresa wouldn’t agree and would feel offended.
Paragraph 1:
But still, gathering my courage, I told her my wish.

Paragraph 2:
John said thank you and happily accepted the gift.

【答案】参考范文:
But still, gathering my courage, I told her my wish. To my surprise, Theresa was moved by the family’s situation and immediately replied, “Great. It’s a much better idea.” Thinking highly of her decision, I began cleaning the bike. And unexpectedly, she cheerfully joined me. After our great efforts, the bike looked new and pretty. To make it work well, we pumped air into the tires and put some oil on the chain. I then sent the bike’s picture to John with the message, “Do you want this for your daughter? It’s free.”
John said thank you and happily accepted the gift. Later he came to take it, saying that he would surprise his daughter Sarah by sending it to her as a Christmas present. A few days later, John sent me a photo of his daughter smiling on the pink bicycle. He said thankfully that Sarah loved the bike and that it made their Christmas really special. Seeing the happiness it brought to John’s daughter, my friend Theresa and I also felt pleased. The experience reminded us of the true spirit of giving during the holiday season.
