Passage 1
[2025保定期中]What makes you work hard? Having your own dreams is
useful. Good sleep also helps. But the fact is, having a plant on your desk can
be good for your work as well.
Mike Robinson, an engineer from Canada, has his own small company.
One day, his wife told him to pick out some plants and put them on his
workers’ desks.
Robinson didn’t trust the idea at first. What could plants do? He thought
they might just catch workers’ eyes. But he decided to try out the idea.

First, Robinson bought 20 plants for his workers. He asked his workers to
make a small note with their own names on it. Then, each worker put the note
on the plant he or she chose and took it back to his or her own desk.
To his surprise, Robinson found that his workers were working much
harder and getting along much better than before.
It could be because his workers made “friendship” with their plants. They
took good care of their plants, and then, took good care of their work. Plants
can help to have a relaxing feeling as well.
What about you? Are there any plants in your classroom? If not, you
might ask your teacher about this. Put some plants in your classroom.#2

新素材 自然灾害的应对措施 [2025石家庄期中]There are some things in
nature that we cannot stop from happening. A flood comes when there is too
much water on the land. Sometimes, it is after a big storm when too much
rain falls on the land. The fast flood water can hurt us and destroy our homes.
We cannot stop a flood from coming, but we can try to stop the water from
coming into our homes. We can try to stop the water by making a wall. We can
use sandbags to make the wall.

An earthquake comes when the land moves. The land goes up and down
and even cracks (断裂).We can get hurt by things that fall down in an
earthquake. We cannot stop an earthquake from coming, but we can try to
make our homes strong so that they do not fall down in an earthquake.
A tornado (龙卷风) is the fast air that goes around and around over the
land. A tornado can pick up anything. It can break anything that is on the way.
A hurricane is a big storm with fast strong winds and heavy rains. It begins on
the sea and can come onto the land. Its fast winds can hurt us and destroy our
homes. We cannot stop a tornado or a hurricane from coming, but we can get
out of its way.

Passage 3
[2025石家庄期末]When it comes to endangered species, most of you may
think of pandas. But did you know that bees are disappearing too? In 2016, the

Just in case they do, Japanese scientists have created a mini drone
(迷你无人机) to pollinate (授粉) plants, just like bees.
The drone has a piece of horse hair with gel (凝胶) on it. The gel lets
the drone go from flower to flower, picking up and dropping off pollen grains
(花粉粒).
The drone still needs to be improved. It cannot make honey or work without
human help. The cost is also high—$100 (about 700 yuan) per drone.
However, it’s still a meaningful exercise, because pollination is important
for humans. Without pollinators, fruit and vegetable production will drop
worldwide by 23 per cent, says The Lancet, a UK magazine.

Bees are one of the most important pollinators, but their numbers are
dropping quickly. Bee numbers in the US have dropped by 30 per cent in the
past five years according to Global Research, a Canadian research organisation.
The situation is similar in other countries.
Although scientists are still trying to find the cause, there are several
possible reasons. First of all, more farmers are using pesticide (杀虫剂).At
the same time, global warming (全球变暖) has changed the bees’ living
environment.
In the future, scientists will use GPS and AI to improve the drones.#1.4
【Passage 3·语篇导读】本文介绍了蜜蜂数量锐减的现状、可能原因、授粉的重要
