①For centuries, Chinese people have used folding fans to cool themselves and have regarded them as a symbol of culture and wisdom. Among them, the Rongchang folding fan, which is from Chongqing’s Rongchang District, is one of the most famous. In 2008, it was listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

⑥As dynasties rose and fell, the Rongchang folding fan continually reinvented its cultural role. From being a tool to a cultural symbol, it shows that true craftsmanship not only serves practical needs, but also carries cultural meaning.
⑦In ancient China, many of Rongchang folding fans were hand-painted with traditional Chinese calligraphy (书法) or paintings, turning each one into a piece of art. Poets wrote poems on them, and performers used them in traditional dances and operas.
⑧Though fewer people need hand-held fans nowadays, Rongchang folding fans are popular among collectors and are often given as cultural gifts. “Yes, Mother.”
“Meg, look after your sisters. If you need help, ask Hannah or Mr Laurence. Jo, be patient and cheerful, and write to me often. Beth and Amy, help with the housework and be obedient (顺从的).”

She got into the carriage and opened the window.
“Goodbye, my dears!” she called as it drove away. The girls waved their hands cheerfully until the carriage turned the corner. Then, with sad faces and heavy hearts, they went back inside.

Have you ever experienced the feeling of falling as you start to fall asleep? Sometimes you may come to realize this feeling. If so, don’t worry. Many people have felt the same thing. In fact, these muscle twitches (肌肉抽搐) in the arms, legs or other parts of the body are called hypnic jerks (睡眠抽动). And they are very common. Up to 70 percent of people experience them sometimes, Huffington Post reported. But what causes it?
There are some theories. Some scientists believe that the feeling of falling comes from the body relaxing itself, especially if the person is anxious or unable to get comfortable. As you are about to sleep, your muscles become relaxed. But your brain stays awake. It misunderstands the relaxing of your muscles as a sign that you're falling. Then the brain jerks the body awake as if it’s trying to protect you.
Other scientists believe that different phases of sleep might cause the hypnic jerks. When we sleep, we experience two phases: non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM). During REM, our heart rate, breathing and nervous system can act irregularly (不规律地). If the body experiences flashes of REM while entering sleep, these irregularities could cause twitches.
If you don’t want to experience hypnic jerks, scientists have some suggestions. When you become deeply relaxed, you can learn how to reconnect slowly by moving your fingers and toes a little bit. Then start to move your head and open your eyes, while being aware of yourself as you get out of the relaxed state.
But experts agree that hypnic jerks, though sometimes scary, are harmless. If it wakes you up, simply roll over and go back to sleep. But keep in mind: a caffeinated (含咖啡因的) drink, exciting evening activities or stress may make hypnic jerks happen more often.
1. What does the third paragraph mainly tells us?

A. At least 70 percent of people experience hypnic jerks.
B. Experts agree that Hypnic jerks are scary and harmful.
C. Our heart rate acts irregularly during REM.

3. Which of the following cannot make hypnic jerks happen more often?
A. Drinking coffee. B. Playing basketball for a long time.
C. Reading a book quietly. D. Having too much pressure.
4. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
5. What is the best title for the passage?

British scientist Jane Goodall, known for her great studies of chimpanzees (黑猩猩), died on Oct1, 2025 a the age of 91.
Jane Goodall was born on April 3, 1934, in London, England. When she was a little girl, she loved animals very much. Once, she even stayed in a hen house for hours just to watch how a hen laid an egg. Her parents were happy to see her love for nature and gave her a toy chimpanzee named Jubilee. This toy made Jane dream of working with animals one day.
When Jane grew up, she went to Africa to study chimpanzees. At first, the chimpanzees were scared of her. They ran away when they saw her. But Jane didn’t give up. She sat quietly in the forest every day, watching them from far away. Slowly, the chimpanzees came close to her. She even gave them names like David and Goliath.
Jane found many amazing things about chimpanzees. She saw that they used sticks to get insects to eat. Before that, people thought only humans could use tools. She also saw that chimpanzees loved their families. Mothers took good care of their babies, and chimpanzees played together like children.
Later, Jane wanted to tell the world about chimpanzees. She wrote books and gave talks. She wanted people to know that chimpanzees are smart and need our help. Many forests where chimpanzees lived were cut down. Jane started groups to protect these forests and chimpanzees.
Even when Jane was over 90 years old, she still worked hard for animals. She traveled around the world, telling kids to love nature. She said, “Every individual (个体) matters. Every individual has a role to play.” Jane Goodall’s love for animals teaches us to care for our planet.
