Enter Jean Trevino, whose story of decided caring and heartfelt sharing sets an example of just how important and meaningful the voluntary work of our gardener can be. For those who don’t yet know Jean, she is the Chair of the Vegetable Garden. She and her team devote themselves to planting and maintaining some of the most productive and beautiful herbs and vegetables. In fact, the abundant amount of produce led Jean to search for a shop where those who otherwise might not have access to fresh vegetables could enjoy their healthful benefits. Jean’s deliveries to Trini Market began in November 2017. Since that time, almost 1,900 pounds of produce, with an estimated retail value $2,800, has been donated to the food bank. And, the variety of produce has been wide! Between January and March of this year, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, turnips, greens, citrus and herbs have all been in the mix. In addition to the bounties from the gardener’s vegetable beds, individual gardeners have made contributions from their personal gardens, as well. There is a touching story behind Jean’s behavior, one that speaks to her mindfulness of the needs of others and her heartfelt determination to be of service. Many years ago, she lived in a war zone in Africa where she witnessed starvation and poverty. Jean describes how one could sit at an outdoor restaurant and see hungry eyes peering through the bushes in the distance. “I couldn’t eat,” Jean says. “I would ask to have my meal packaged and I carefully passed it to those in need. I saw what it was to be so in want, and to this day I can’t bear to see food go to waste.” 1. Why does Jean Trevino run the Vegetable Garden? A. To make a living by gardening. B. To provide free vegetables for the needy. C. To share gardening experience with others. D. To raise public awareness of homelessness. 2. What is the main idea of paragraph 3? A. Jean’s donations to the food bank. B. Great demand in Trini Market. C. Various vegetables in Jean’s garden. D. Great success of Jean’s garden. 3. Where did Jean Trevino’s mindfulness of the needs of others come from? A. Her experience of running a restaurant. B. Her experience of starvation and poverty. C. Her witness to much food going to waste. D. Her witness to others’ sufferings in Africa. 4 Which of the following best describes Jean Trevino? A. Rich and modest. B. Optimistic and friendly. C. Caring and generous D. Determined and hard-working. Researchers led by Josie Hughes in the CREATE Lab in EPFL’s School of Engineering wanted to develop a robot that could go across diverse environments as skillfully as animals by changing form on the fly. With GOAT (Good Over All Terrains) they have achieved just that—and created a new model for robotic movement and control in the process. “While most robots compute the shortest path from A to B, GOAT considers the travel pattern as well as the path to be taken,” Hughes explains. “For example, instead of going around an obstacle like a stream, GOAT can swim straight through. If its path is hilly, it can passively roll downhill like a ball to save both time and energy, and then actively drive as a rover (漫游者) when rolling is no longer beneficial.” To design their robot, the CREATE team took inspiration from across the animal kingdom, including spiders and kangaroos. The team’s bioinspired approach led to a design that is highly compliant (顺应的), meaning it adapts in response to interaction with its environment, rather than remaining unchangeable. This allows GOAT to actively alter its shape to change its passive properties, which range from more flexible in its ‘rover’ model to stronger as a ball. CREATE Lab PhD student Max Polzin explains that compliance also allows GOAT to navigate with minimal sensing equipment. With only a satellite navigation system and a device for measuring the robot’s own direction, GOAT carries no cameras onboard. “It doesn’t need complex sensing. It can use the environment, even with very limited knowledge of it, to find the best path,” Polzin says. Future research includes improved algorithms (算法) to help with GOAT’s design. Looking ahead, the researchers see many potential applications for their device, from environmental monitoring to disaster response. 5. What key feature distinguishes GOAT? A. Rolling downhill like a ball. B. Calculating the shortest A-to-B path. C. Navigating obstacles such as streams. D. Efficient adaptation to varied terrains. 6. Where did GOAT’s designers find their solution? A. From previous robots. B. From other researches. C From other species. D. From edging information. 7. In which field will GOAT probably be applied? A. Education. B. Climate. C. Finance. D. Medicine. 8. What would be the best title for the passage? A The Future Applications of GOAT B. The Development of a New Robot: GOAT C. GOAT: A Robot for Diverse Environments D. How GOAT Saves Time and Energy in Travel Passage 3 完形填空 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Have you ever handed over money for something you at first refused to pay for? This is what I experienced with Alex. I always thought Alex and I were so different. I was the serious one, the star of the debate team who always came prepared. Alex, on the other hand, was known for his unconcerned manner and his constant sketching (画素描). We shared a biology class but never spoke. To be honest, I thought we had nothing in common, and I was fine with that. So, you can imagine my disappointment when our teacher paired us for a project on butterflies. I preferred to work alone due to the tight deadline for the project presentation. For the first week, we barely spoke. I buried myself in research, while Alex just sat there, drawing in his notebook. One afternoon, I couldn’t help taking a look at his drawings. I found they weren’t just simple sketches; they were detailed, full of emotion, and surprisingly beautiful. “Why do you spend so much time drawing?” I asked. He looked up, surprised that I had spoken to him. “It helps me think,” he replied softly. “Sometimes words aren’t enough to express what I feel.” His words stuck with me. The next day, I saw him sitting alone in the library, looking really upset. “Is everything okay?” I asked. He sighed, “I’m struggling with the written part of the project. I’m just not good with words.” I realized I had judged him without ever trying to know him. “Maybe I can help with the writing,” I offered. “And you could help me see things in a different way — like through your art.” And that’s what we did. B 2. A 3. D 4. 根据第一段中的“What a privilege it is when the harvest of our gardening labors can be extended to those in need of a helping hand. Enter Jean Trevino, whose story of decided caring and heartfelt sharing sets an example(当我们园艺劳作的收获能够惠及那些需要帮助的人时,这是多么荣幸的一件事。珍·特雷维诺就是这样的人,她那份坚定付出、真诚分享的事迹堪称典范)以及第二段中的“the abundant amount of produce led Jean to search for a shop where those who otherwise might not have access to fresh vegetables could enjoy their healthful benefits(丰收的蔬菜让珍开始寻找渠道,好让那些原本吃不到新鲜蔬菜的人也能享受到这份健康馈赠)”可知,珍经营菜园是为了给有需要的人提供免费蔬菜。故选B项。 【2题详解】主旨大意题。根据第三段中的“Jean’s deliveries to Trini Market began in November 2017. Since that time, almost 1,900 pounds of produce, with an estimated retail value $2,800, has been donated to the food bank. And, the variety of produce has been wide!(珍于2017年11月开始向特里尼市场运送蔬菜。从那以后,她已经向食品赈济处捐赠了近1900磅的农产品,估计零售价值达2800美元,而且捐赠的农产品种类十分丰富)”可知,该段主要讲述珍向食品赈济处捐赠蔬菜的具体情况。故选A项。 3题详解】细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Many years ago, she lived in a war zone in Africa where she witnessed starvation and poverty. Jean describes how one could sit at an outdoor restaurant and see hungry eyes peering through the bushes in the distance(多年前,她曾在非洲的一个战区生活,在那里她目睹了饥饿与贫困。珍回忆说,坐在户外餐厅里,能看到远处灌木丛中,一双双饥饿的眼睛在窥探)”可知,珍对他人需求的关注源于她在非洲目睹人们遭受苦难的经历。故选D项。 【4题详解】推理判断题。根据第一段中的 “whose story of decided caring and heartfelt sharing sets an example of just how important and meaningful the voluntary work of our gardener can be(她那份坚定付出、真诚分享的事迹,堪称园丁志愿工作重要意义的典范)”,以及第四段中的 “I saw what it was to be so in want, and to this day I can’t bear to see food go to waste(我见识过极度匮乏的滋味,直到今天也不忍心看着食物被浪费)”,能看出珍关注他人需求,心怀善意。根据第三段中的 “Since that time, almost 1,900 pounds of produce, with an estimated retail value $2,800, has been donated to the food bank(从那以后,她已经向食品赈济处捐赠了近 1900 磅的农产品,估计零售价值达 2800 美元)”和“In addition to the bounties from the gardener’s vegetable beds, individual gardeners have made contributions from their personal gardens, as well(除了菜园里的丰收成果,她还带动其他园丁捐赠自家种的蔬菜)”,能看出珍慷慨捐赠大量蔬菜,还带动他人参与善举。故选C项。 Passage 2 【科技发展】 Researchers led by Josie Hughes in the CREATE Lab in EPFL’s School of Engineering wanted to develop a robot that could go across diverse environments as skillfully as animals by changing form on the fly. How GOAT Saves Time and Energy in Travel 【答案】5. D 6. C 7. B 8. C 【导语】本文是说明文。介绍了一种新型机器人GOAT能够适应各种环境。 【5题详解】细节理解题。根据第一段“Researchers led by Josie Hughes in the CREATE Lab in EPFL’s School of Engineering wanted to develop a robot that could go across diverse environments as skillfully as animals by changing form on the fly.(由乔西·休斯领导的EPFL工程学院CREATE实验室的研究人员想要开发一种机器人,它可以像动物一样熟练地通过在飞行中改变形态来穿越各种环境)”以及第二段““While most robots compute the shortest path from A to B, GOAT considers the travel pattern as well as the path to be taken,” Hughes explains. “For example, instead of going around an obstacle like a stream, GOAT can swim straight through. If its path is hilly, it can passively roll downhill like a ball to save both time and energy, and then actively drive as a rover (漫游者) when rolling is no longer beneficial.”(休斯解释说:“当大多数机器人计算从A点到B点的最短路径时,GOAT会考虑旅行模式和路径。例如,山羊可以直接游过去,而不是像溪流一样绕过障碍物。如果它的路径是丘陵,它可以像球一样被动地滚下山,以节省时间和精力,然后当滚动不再有益时,它可以作为漫游者主动行驶。”)”可知,GOAT最主要的特征就是能根据不同的环境改变它的形态。故选D项。 【6题详解】细节理解题。根据第三段“To design their robot, the CREATE team took inspiration from across the animal kingdom, including spiders and kangaroos. The team’s bioinspired approach led to a design that is highly compliant (顺应的), meaning it adapts in response to interaction with its environment, rather than remaining unchangeable.(为了设计他们的机器人,CREATE团队从动物王国汲取了灵感,包括蜘蛛和袋鼠。该团队的生物启发方法导致了高度顺应的设计,这意味着它可以适应与环境的相互作用,而不是保持不变)”可知,CREATE团队是由其他生物特别是动物而产生灵感。故选C项。 【7题详解】推理判断题。根据最后一段“Looking ahead, the researchers see many potential applications for their device, from environmental monitoring to disaster response.(展望未来,研究人员看到了他们的设备的许多潜在应用,从环境监测到灾难响应)”可知,此款机器人可以适用于环境监测或者灾难应对等领域,而气象领域会有极端灾害发生。故选B项。 【8题详解】主旨大意题。根据第一段“Researchers led by Josie Hughes in the CREATE Lab in EPFL’s School of Engineering wanted to develop a robot that could go across diverse environments as skillfully as animals by changing form on the fly. With GOAT (Good Over All Terrains) they have achieved just that—and created a new model for robotic movement and control in the process.(由乔西·休斯领导的EPFL工程学院CREATE实验室的研究人员想要开发一种机器人,它可以像动物一样熟练地通过在飞行中改变形态来穿越各种环境。有了GOAT (Good Over All terrain),他们就做到了这一点,并在这个过程中为机器人的运动和控制创造了一个新的模型)”可知,本文讲了一种新型机器人GOAT能够适应各种环境,所以C项“GOAT:适应不同环境的机器人”是本文最好的标题。故选C项。 Passage 3 完形填空 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Have you ever handed over money for something you at first refused to pay for? “And you could help me see things in a different way — like through your art.” 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 And that’s what we did. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The day of the project presentation finally arrived ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 And that’s what we did. I helped him organize his ideas and arguments into clear, logical sentences and paragraphs. In return, he shared his drawings with me. He sketched the life cycle of butterflies, not as a boring chart, but as a beautiful story of change. His drawings gave me new ways to see scientific facts, and my writing skills gave voice to his ideas. Slowly, the project became not just an assignment, but a bridge between two different worlds. We weren’t just partners; we became a team. The day of the project presentation finally arrived. As we stood before the class, I felt nervous but confident. I began explaining the life cycle of butterflies with precise data while Alex displayed his beautiful drawings on the screen — each told a story of growth, change, and freedom. The whole class was amazed as the butterflies came to life through Alex’s art. As a result, our project won first prize for its “perfect combination”, but what mattered more was the lesson we learned: differences can be strengths when shared. 词汇激活 行为类 ①梳理:organize/ sort out ②呈现:display/ present ③获奖:win a prize/ get an award 情绪类 ①惊讶的:amazed/ surprised/ astonished ②自信的:confident/ self-assured/ sure of oneself 【点睛】【高分句型1】The whole class was amazed as the butterflies came to life through Alex’s art. (运用了as引导的状语从句) 【高分句型2】As a result, our project won first prize for its “perfect combination”, but what mattered more was the lesson we learned: differences can be strengths when shared. (运用了what引导的主语从句、省略that/which的定语从句和状语从句的省略) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
