THE PALISADES FIRE in Los Angeles burned Charlotte Tragos’s home to the ground. “It was a pretty special and unique house” says Tragos, who fled with her family when the fire broke out. “The streets were packed with people running, driving on the wrong side of the road,” she says, adding that everyone knew they were running for their lives.
A few days after the fire started, a friend shared a video with her of a Los Angeles artist offering to create, for free, watercolor paintings of people’s homes before they were scorched (烧焦). Tragos reached out to the artist, Jordan Heber, asking if she could do Tragos’s childhood home. Heber accepted and completed a painting of Tragos’s home in just three days. Tragos says she will forever be grateful to Heber. “It means the world,” she says. “We’re in a position where we have nothing, and anything like that, especially pieces that mark what the house meant to us — it is really uplifting.”
“I moved around a lot when I was younger, and so the meaning of home is significant to me,” Heber says. After the wildfires started, Heber thought about ways she could contribute. A friend sent her an Instagram post by another local artist offering to draw people’s homes at no charge, and Heber was inspired. Shortly after she posted her offer on social media, requests started coming in.
Heber has created more than 25 paintings, including one for Jeremy Wineberg, whose home in Pacific Palisades was destroyed. “It was a place you never wanted to leave,” says Wineberg, adding that the house had been in his family for nearly 30 years. “We told her our story, and she so kindly and lovingly made such a beautiful memory that looks exactly as if it was a photograph,” says Wineberg. Heber is glad people find her paintings meaningful, saying, “Hopefully it inspires others to pitch in with their own gifts.”
4. How did Tragos feel about Heber’s painting of her childhood home?
A. She viewed it mainly as a beautiful piece of artwork.
B. She felt it failed to capture the true memory of her home.
C. She found it emotionally comforting during a difficult time.
D. She considered it a practical replacement for her lost belongings.
5. Why did Jordan Heber offer to paint for wildfire victims?
A. She needed to improve her painting skills. B. She was responding to numerous requests.
C. She was inspired by an artist’s act of kindness. D. She valued the meaning of home since childhood.
6. Which of the following can best describe Jordan Heber?
A. Conservative and selfless. B. Innovative and compassionate.
C. Humble and adventurous. D. Enterprising and devoted.
7. What can be inferred from Jordan Heber’s words in the last paragraph?
A. She wants to teach wildfire victims how to paint.
B. She hopes to encourage more people to help others.
C. She regrets not being able to help more wildfire victims.
D. She plans to stop painting and focus on her full-time job.

Twice a week, Adam Knox jumps into a four-wheel-drive pickup and climbs to a forest high in the mountains of Hawaii. “You feel like you’re in one of those adventure-type movies,” Knox says. “This is where the native birds live.” These birds are honeycreepers. They’re in danger of going extinct because of avian (鸟类的) malaria, a disease spread to birds by mosquitoes. To save them, the American Bird Conservancy has launched an innovative conservation project. As a drone pilot and project member, Adam Knox goes into the forest with a key mission: to release more mosquitoes as part of a scientific intervention.
Instead of chemicals, “this technique uses mosquitoes to fight mosquitoes,” says scientist Christa Seidl, of Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project. When the mosquito project began, in 2023, helicopters were the best available means. “It’s been a long road to get here, with a lot of trial and testing,” Knox says. “But at this point, we have a system that can fly in these difficult environments.” Plus, drones are quieter, cost less, and allow more flexibility with timing.
Honeycreepers live in Hawaii, and nowhere else. There used to be more than 50 species. “Now there are only 17,” says Chris Farmer, ABC’s Hawaii program director. Unlike honeycreepers, mosquitoes are not native to Hawaii. As temperatures have warmed, mosquitoes have moved higher to honeycreeper habitat. A single mosquito bite can kill a honeycreeper.
The mosquitoes Knox drops into the forest are males, so they don’t bite or transmit disease. They’ve been raised in a lab and bred to carry a natural bacteria that prevents them from reproducing with wild females. When these mosquitoes mate with wild ones, the eggs that are produced won’t hatch. “This lowers the mosquito population over time,” Seidl says, especially since most females mate only once. It also gives honeycreepers time to bounce back.
Conservationists aren’t sure how long it will take. Until then, Knox will continue doing drone drops. And Seidl will continue tracking mosquito numbers and honeycreeper health. “Everyone is so committed and works so hard because we understand that it is our responsibility to save these birds,” Farmer says. “And we can do that. We have the technology.”
8. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To emphasize the risks involved in Knox’s work.
B. To introduce the honeycreeper conservation project.
C. To describe the natural habitat of the honeycreepers.
D. To state the main threat to the honeycreepers’ survival.
9. What do we know about the project from paragraph 2?
A. Its primary objective. B. Its scientific principle.
C. Its operational approach. D. Its developmental challenges.
10. What does the underlined phrase “bounce back” probably mean?
A. Survive. B. Migrate. C. Withdraw. D. Restore.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Studying bird diseases. B. Using drones in forests.
C. Saving birds with mosquitoes. D. Tracking wildlife numbers.
D
There are many things that are opposed by Robert F. Kennedy junior, America’s health secretary, and his supporters. One that really upsets them is seed oils. In their telling, the oils are “toxic”. Now some American fast-food chains have swapped the oils for other fats. Is the stuff as bad as they make out?
Seed oils are extracted from corn, soyabean, sunflower and other seeds. Critics worry most about two things. The first is that harmful chemicals used in oil processing may end up in the finished product. The second is the oils’ content of omega-6 fatty acids. This type of fat, opponents claim, causes cancer, heart attacks and obesity. On both counts, the scientific evidence says otherwise.
A chief concern for seed-oil opponents is that linoleic acid (亚油酸) , the main omega-6 fat in seed oils, can turn into inflammatory (炎症的) compounds in the body. Yet it is also broken down into some anti-inflammatory compounds. That makes it hard to work out whether it is pro- or anti-inflammatory overall. In trials, increasing participants’ consumption of linoleic acid had no effect on inflammatory markers in their bodies. There are also clear benefits: seed oils are high in healthy polyunsaturated (多不饱和的) fats, meaning that choosing them over saturated fats like butter lowers cholesterol levels, which cuts the risk of heart attacks.
Long-term observational studies reach equally reassuring conclusions. A recent one found that those following diets high in vegetable oils lived longer, healthier lives than those whose diets were low in vegetable oils. An earlier study, published by the World Health Organisation, found that higher intake of omega-6 fats was linked with lower death rates.
In short, seed oils are unlikely to cause harm — in fact, they are probably good for you, especially if they are consumed in moderation and supplemented by other, healthy fats. Overconsumption is usually the consequence of a generally unhealthy diet, full of fried or ultra-processed foods. spoon for spoon, seed oils are much healthier than some of the alternatives championed by their critics.
12. Why do critics oppose seed oils?
A. They are extracted mainly from seeds of plants.
B. They are no longer a key ingredient in fast-food.
C. They are a leading contributor to several diseases.
D. Their extraction procedure poses a threat to health.
13. Which of the following might the author agree with?
A. Omega-6 fatty acids are unhealthy. B. Butter helps reduce cholesterol levels.
C. The effect of linoleic acid is confirmed. D. Seed oils contribute to a longer lifespan.
14. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Alternative fats advocated by critics are harmful.
B. Seed oils are harmless when consumed in moderation.
C. Seed oils can serve as a supplement for fats like butter.
D. The nutritional benefits of seed oils have been undervalued.
15. What is the suitable title of the passage?
A. Dismiss the Doubts: What Is in Seed Oils?
B. Put the Fears to Rest: The Truth About Seed Oils
C. Weigh the Options: Seed Oils or Traditional Fats?
D. Mind the Threat: The Hidden Danger in Your Kitchen

Many of us get lost in social media. Worldwide, the average adult spends more than 2. 5 hours per day immersed in social apps. All that scrolling (滚屏) can cause harm: too much social media use is linked with loneliness, depressive symptoms and poor self-esteem. ____16____ Here are some strategies to help reset your relationship with social media.
____17____
When you start to feel overwhelmed by social media, return to a “tech intentions” document: a record of the ways you will and will not use the apps. For example, “I use social media to connect with others, to learn new things daily, to record my life, and to express myself creatively, ” or “I do not use social media as a replacement for IRL. ” Write your own version, and stick it to your desk or wherever you might be distracted to mindlessly scroll.
Set specific goals
Committing to using social media less is too general a resolution to be effective. Instead, set specific goals or boundaries. ____18____ Then, set up systems to make that possible: Put your phone in another room, or put it on “do not disturb”.
Go on an unfollowing spree (狂欢)
Is it serving you to keep getting updates about your friends, or from the reality stars? Maybe you’re no longer crazy about baby pandas and are now on to quokkas. ____19____ Unfollow the accounts that are no longer fulfilling a role, and instead seek out those that are inspiring, educational, or related to hobbies you’d like to cultivate.
Make a list of scrolling substitutes
If you weren’t scrolling through social media posts, what would you be doing? Make a list of activities you enjoy — and make sure they’re intellectually, emotionally, or physically feeding you. You might go for a walk, read a book, take up the guitar, or try out some crafting projects. ____20____
A. Craft a mission statement.
B. Record your personal preference.
C. So take the time to think about what’s working.
D. At times we’re not even aware of how we’re using it.
E. Maybe you get three 20-minute social media sessions per day.
F. You have finished the party and don’t need to keep seeing fancy dresses.
G. There’s no way to check Facebook if your fingers are busy weaving clothes.

Cindi’s mother, Queenie, just frowned, “You’ve been listening to too much pop music. This Beatlemania is putting you off your work. It stops now.” Cindi protested, “But I love the Beatles. You can’t ban them! I just…” One look at Queenie’s face, all pursed mouth and hard eyes, made Cindi close her mouth. There was no point in arguing.
Deep down, she was sad that Queenie didn’t understand. She had no wish for more lectures and avoided her mum as far as possible. With an ache in her heart, she became secretive. Cindi dreamed of being a singer. She had sung with Queenie at many family get-togethers, most notably at her grandad’s eightieth birthday. Right now, determined not to give up, Cindi gazed frustratedly at her wall of newspaper cuttings, posters and Beatles programmes. She decided to hide them in a broken carpet on the floor with a hole inside.
One day, as she neared the house, the smell of smoke distracted Cindi from her worries. She smiled. Her dad must be having one of his famous bonfires (篝火) . At sight of Cindi, Queenie came running through from the kitchen. “Come and look at this, Cindi. I’ve got a big surprise for you! You’ll love it.” She chanced a rare smile, accompanying Cindi up the stairs into her bedroom.
There, Cindi was shocked to find the previous carpet gone and replaced by a shocking pink one. She crashed down on the bed, yelling with hurt and anger, “how could you throw them all out? My cuttings, my Beatles autographs — they were all in the carpet.” “Cindi love, what are you talking about? I had no idea…” Queenie sounded genuinely puzzled. “Up the garden. Run. Quick. Your dad is burning it right now.” Cindi rushed out, only to find the carpet and all its secret contents reduced to smoking ashes.
Nobody but Janey, her best friend, was very supportive of her hopes and dreams. She knew of the tensions at home. She knew how the carpet burning had made things even worse. Janey could read her thoughts. “Listen, Cindi.” She nodded encouragingly as she grabbed Cindi’s shoulders. “Try to get on with your mum. Don’t overreact. She doesn’t mean it. And look at this!” Excitedly Janey fished an advertisement from her pocket. Singers wanted. Cindi’s heart skipped. “You’ve got a great voice. It’s called talent. You can sing like the stars. You have to believe in yourself.” Cindi needed to talk to her mum bravely.

THE PALISADES FIRE in Los Angeles burned Charlotte Tragos’s home to the ground. “It was a pretty special and unique house,” says Tragos, who fled with her family when the fire broke out.
D She plans to stop painting and focus on her full-time job.

【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. C

【导语】这是一篇说明文。本文介绍美国鸟类保护协会用投放特殊雄蚊的方式,减少致病蚊子数量,拯救夏威夷濒危蜜旋木雀的保护项目。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“To save them, the American Bird Conservancy has launched an innovative conservation project. As a drone pilot and project member, Adam Knox goes into the forest with a key mission: to release more mosquitoes as part of a scientific intervention. (为了拯救它们,美国鸟类保护协会启动了一个创新性的保护项目。作为无人机飞行员和项目成员,亚当・诺克斯带着一项关键任务进入森林:投放更多蚊子,作为一项科学干预措施的一部分。)”可知,第一段的作用是引出拯救蜜旋木雀的保护项目。故选B项。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段内容“Instead of chemicals, “this technique uses mosquitoes to fight mosquitoes,” says scientist Christa Seidl, of Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project. When the mosquito project began, in 2023, helicopters were the best available means. “It’s been a long road to get here, with a lot of trial and testing,” Knox says. “But at this point, we have a system that can fly in these difficult environments.” Plus, drones are quieter, cost less, and allow more flexibility with timing.(“这种技术并非使用化学药剂,而是以蚊治蚊。”
根据第四段中“The mosquitoes Knox drops into the forest are males, so they don’t bite or transmit disease. They’ve been raised in a lab and bred to carry a natural bacteria that prevents them from reproducing with wild females. When these mosquitoes mate with wild ones, the eggs that are produced won’t hatch.(诺克斯投放到森林里的蚊子是雄性的,所以它们不会叮咬或传播疾病。它们是在实验室里饲养的,并被培育成携带一种天然细菌,这种细菌可以防止它们与野生雌性繁殖。当这些蚊子与野生蚊子交配时,产生的蚊子卵不会孵化。)”以及“This lowers the mosquito population over time,(随着时间的推移,这会降低蚊子的数量)”可知,投放的雄蚊不会叮咬或传播疾病,而且与野生雌蚊交配后,雌蚊产下的卵无法孵化,蚊子数量会随之减少。结合画线短语所在句“It also gives honeycreepers time to bounce back. (这也给了蜜旋木雀bounce back的时间)”以及前文提到蚊子传播的疟疾导致蜜旋木雀濒临灭绝可推断,该短语意为“恢复”种群数量。Restore“恢复”与其意思最接近。故选D项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,特别是第一段“To save them, the American Bird Conservancy has launched an innovative conservation project. As a drone pilot and project member, Adam Knox goes into the forest with a key mission: to release more mosquitoes as part of a scientific intervention.

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
【答案】16. D 17. A 18. E 19. F 20. G

If I had the chance to send a gift to Chinese astronauts in space, I would choose a small bonsai tree. Though living plants are hard to maintain in space, a miniature version of our Earth’s nature could remind them of home and symbolize life’s resilience.
This gift represents not only our beautiful planet but also growth and peace. In the vast, silent universe, it would carry our shared hope that exploration always goes hand in hand with harmony and care for life.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Paragraph 2: “How would you feel about this?” Cindi pushed Singers Wanted advertisement towards her mum.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Watching her mother cooking, Cindi cleared her throat. Her hands were trembling slightly as she mustered up the courage to speak. “Mum,” she said softly, “I know we’ve had our differences lately, and I’m sorry for avoiding you. But the Beatles mean so much to me. They’re not just a band; they’re my inspiration. I dream of being a singer like them, and losing those things in the carpet really hurt.” Queenie turned around, a look of surprise and then understanding crossing her face. She put down the spatula and gave Cindi her full attention.
How would you feel about this?” Cindi pushed the “Singers Wanted” advertisement towards her mum. Queenie picked it up and read it carefully. Her eyes widened a little as she realized what it meant. “Cindi,” she said slowly, “I had no idea you felt this strongly. Maybe I’ve been too harsh. If this is what you really want, I’ll support you. We can work through this together.” A huge smile spread across Cindi’s face. She felt a wave of relief wash over her. Finally, her mum understood, and they could move forward as a team.
