A father saw his 11-year-old son crying. He asked him, “What’s the matter, Son?” The young boy replied, “My rich classmates called me ‘the son of a gardener’. They said that my father lives on the money he earns from watering and feeding plants.”
The father stopped for a moment and then said, “Let’s carry out an experiment.” He held his son’s hand and walked him to the garden. Then he took out two flower seeds and said, “We will plant a flower separately. I’ll care for one and water it with clean water while you’ll care for the other and water yours with dirty water. We shall see the results in a few weeks.”
As the boy joined his father in planting the flowers, it took them some days to finally germinate (使发芽) the flower seeds. “Look at the two flowers. What can you see?” the father said. The boy said, “My flower looks better and healthier than yours. How is that possible when your water is cleaner?” The father smiled, “That’s because the dirty water doesn’t stop a plant from growing but rather serves as organic fertilizer (有机肥料) to help it grow. You see, there are some people who put you down in life and mock (嘲笑) your dreams. Always remember that there’s nothing wrong with you. Don’t let the unkind words upset you. Instead, let them encourage you to be a better person, so you will be like the plant and will grow well even in the dirt.”

When the air is polluted, we wear masks (口罩) to protect ourselves. What about bees and butterflies? They can’t wear masks.
A recent study led by Dr. Ryall may give us the answer. His study finds that air pollution is bad for pollinators (传粉者) like bees, butterflies and other insects. They can’t smell flowers because of the pollution.
Pollinators are important. They spread pollen (花粉) among the plants with flowers. This helps the flower produce seeds (种子) and fruit. Without pollinators, farms cannot make food.
To do their study, Dr. Ryall’s team built some new areas. They sent some bad gas there. In these areas, they found that only 30% of the pollinators flew in. Once they were there, they didn’t hang (徘徊) around.
“The results were much more severe than we thought,” said Dr. Ryall. “The pollution was so serious that it would be bad for the growth of flowers.”
Scientists explained that bad gas can break down the smells of flowers. This makes it hard for pollinators to find their food. Shannon, a scientist in India, pointed out that if we do nothing to solve the problem of air pollution, pollinators will become fewer and fewer.
36. Which of the following are pollinators?

As we all know, there is a great shortage of water in lots of areas in Africa. However, there is a magical tree which can help to solve the water problem. It is called the “sacred (神圣的) tree of Africa”—baobab tree (猴面包树).
A baobab tree is huge like an upside-down carrot. It can grow so large that it needs more than 40 people holding hands to circle it. In fact, most baobab trees are not very tall, only about ten meters.
A baobab tree is valuable. If everyone in Africa had a 10-meter-tall baobab tree, it would solve more than 50% of their food problem. In hot Africa, water is the most needed. When the rainy season comes, the baobab tree starts to hold water in its body. The baobab tree is said to be the most water-holding tree. It can hold thousands of kilograms of water in its body. Local people usually cut a hole in the tree with a knife and get clean water from it. The baobab tree leaves are a bit like spinach (菠菜) leaves. True to its Chinese name, the fruit of the baobab tree tastes like bread. But it’s not like bread with cream. It tastes dry. Local people seldom get stomach problems because of eating it.
Baobab trees are not only useful for humans, but for animals in nature! Their fruits can be good food for monkeys, lizards and other African animals. Their leaves can also be eaten to get enough water.
41. What does a baobab tree look like?
A A carrot. B. A piece of bread. C. A spinach leaf. D. A monkey.
42. What may happen if everyone in Africa had a 10-meter-tall Baobab tree?
A. They won’t go hungry any more.
B. It could solve over half of the food problem.
C. They could get enough carrots from the trees to eat.
D. It would solve the problem of water shortage completely.
43. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. How serious the problems are in Africa. B. How useful the baobab trees are.
C. How to get water from the baobab tree. D. What the fruit of baobab trees tastes like.
44. What is the structure (结构) of the passage? (P=Paragraph)

First, we should recycle litter instead of throwing rubbish here and there. Second, walking or riding a bike is better than taking a taxi. Also, we ought to plant more trees and never cut them down. Besides, we should save water by turning off the tap after washing hands. We shouldn’t waste paper. Let’s take action now to make our school greener!
