Known as kung fu in the West, Chinese martial arts come in many forms. From aunties in the park to Shaolin monks (和尚), everyone is, in fact, practicing kung fu.
Tai chi
Tai chi, or Taijiquan as it is more commonly known, is perhaps more connected with aunties in the park than with powerful martial artists. But tai chi is practiced for both its health benefits and as defense training. Tai chi features its slow movements. Meeting brute force (蛮劲) with brute force is sure to leave both sides injured. Meeting brute force with softness, however, allows the incoming force to exhaust itself so it can more easily be redirected.
Wing Chun
Like tai chi, Wing Chun is based on a philosophy of overcoming hardness by softness. Relaxation and calmness are central to Wing Chun’s fighting style. Wing Chun’s two most famous practitioners were Yip Man and his pupil, Bruce Lee.
Bajiquan
Bajiquan, meaning eight extreme fists, is much more forceful in style than tai chi or Wing Chun. It features explosive, short-range motions and is famous for its elbow and shoulder strikes. The first practitioner clearly identified in history was a man named Wu Zhong.
Sanda
Sanda, also known as Sanshou, is a mixture of traditional kung fu and modern combat practices. Sanda is believed to have originated from ancient Chinese Lei Tai fights. As part of the development of martial arts sports by the Chinese government, a standard curriculum (课程) for Sanda has been developed.

An apology(抱歉)was all I needed. I hung up the phone feeling relaxed, and I began to understand how it must feel to be a father. I forgave him for never being there. He worked so I could play. My father loved me enough to let me experience life's happiest moments without him.

Australia has passed a law that aims to prevent people younger than 16 from using social media. The law is meant to protect young people, but some people say it could create more problems than it solves. Under the new law, social media companies must take “reasonable steps” to prevent anyone under 16 from creating an account. If the companies do not follow the law, they could be fined up to US $32 million.
Many people in Australia seem to agree. Recent surveys show that 77% of people in Australia are in favor of the law. People are worried about how social media can hurt young people’s mental health. Many people have heard stories about young people who have been bullied (霸凌) online and later hurt themselves.
But not everyone agrees that the new law is a good idea. Some people believe the law will make it harder for young people to connect with others who can support them. Others worry that the social media ban (禁令) will push young people toward less safe parts of the Internet.
One of the biggest problems is how the social media companies will figure out how old their users are. The law says the companies must give people a way to prove their age without sending in a government ID, but it’s not clear how this might work. The demand that the companies collect even more information raises worries about the privacy of young people.
Other countries have also taken steps to limit social media use by young people. In France, people under 15 can not use social media without agreement from a parent. Countries like the UK and Norway are considering similar laws. Some US states have passed laws limiting social media for young people, though these laws have been challenged in court.
8. What does the underlined word “fined” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Added. B. Cheated. C. Punished. D. Lent.
9. What do Australians think of the new law?
A. They all agree to it. B. They are all against it.
C. They hold different opinions. D. They are very worried about it.
10. What is the biggest problem in carrying out the law for social media companies?
A. How to find out users’ ages. B. How to use users’ ID cards.
C. How to protect users’ privacy. D. How to collect users’ thoughts.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Many European countries are passing similar laws.
B. France also has no age limit for using social media.
C. A number of laws of the US have been challenged.
D. Teenagers’ use of social media has attracted global attention.
D
Spending time outdoors has long been linked (联系) to better health. Gardening goes beyond just beautifying outdoor spaces—it can have a deep effect on our physical and mental (身心上的) health.
Gardening involves physical activity that works all the main muscle (肌肉) groups, which is helpful for overall health. “Activities such as digging, planting, weeding and harvesting require movement and can help to improve strength,” said Clayton, CEO of an online lawn care company. “Performing these activities regularly can help burn calories, and keep a healthy weight.”
Beyond burning calories and building muscle, lots of studies have shown that gardening can improve the immune system (免疫系统). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people get at least 150 minutes of exercise each week, and gardening is listed as a suitable activity. Doing garden work for that time each week can reduce the risk of obesity, high blood pressure and heart disease. Additionally, spending time outdoors makes us get close to natural sunlight, which is important for vitamin D synth.
Gardening provides a chance for social connection, too. It can be a shared activity among family members, friends or neighbors, building relationships and a sense of belonging.
Gardening also offers cognitive (认知的) benefits. It excites the senses, improves focus and encourages problem-solving and creativity. It provides a chance to learn about plants, ecosystems and the environment, developing a deeper understanding and appreciation for nature.
12. What is Clayton’s attitude towards gardening?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear D. Uncaring.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about gardening?
A. It improves focus. B. It is a waste of time.
C. It can keep a body in shape. D. It helps to reduce the risk of diseases.
14. How does gardening affect social connection according to the text?
A. It contributes to creativity. B. It encourages problem-solving.
C It builds relationships between people. D. It improves people’s awareness of safety.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Start a Garden B. Choose a Garden or Not
C. What Plants Grow Best in a Garden D. Start Gardening and Get the Health Benefits

【答案】8. C 9. C 10. A 11.

Reasons Why Running Is the Easiest Exercise
Some people think that running is hard. I once thought that too. ____16____ Here’s why it is such an easy activity to start and stick to.
★It can be as easy or hard as you want.
Many people start running by going out and running as fast as they can for as long as they can. That is not so fun. ____17____ But easing into it is a different story. Start slowly and cover a short distance. Then gradually work your way up to it. In this way, running can be pain-free and actually wonderful.
★____18____
Classes at the gym are great but they always end up never working for me. With a busy life, I find it hard to take a class. On the other hand, with running, you just need to find the time whenever you can, here and there, and change it around.
★The gear (设备) is simple.
____19____ However, that’s really just about all you need. Expensive sport-specific clothes are available(可用的) but not required. If you fall in love with running, you may think you need some seasonal running clothes. Even so, that will be cheaper than bike gear.
★You can do it anywhere
You can run in the city. You can run in the country. You can run on a track, in a park, on the street or even on the beach. You can run at home. You can run when you travel. And in fact, running around new cities when you’re traveling is great fun. ____20____
