A. Rewarding. B. Dangerous. C. Challenging.
C 19. A 20. A
W: Well, now let me tell you what I’ve been doing in recent years. In 2015, I retired from my post as a designer for a furniture company. And since then, I’ve been working as a volunteer. In 2017, I joined Green Woodpecker — an organization that promotes environmental protection. At the beginning, I mostly worked in public squares near the west railway station, helping the traffic police and giving directions to passengers. Then my work focus changed. When our city adopted the new tobacco control rules in June, 2018, I began a new task: persuading people not to smoke in public places. In addition to the railway station, I have been going to places where there are many restaurants and bars. We work in groups of three, and try to stop people from smoking. Fortunately, most smokers are supportive and put out their cigarettes when we ask them to, but that was not the case in the early days — some smokers could become quite violent. I like being a volunteer. The work is exciting and makes me feel young. It has now become part of my life.

In April 2022, Uday Bhatia, a student from Delhi, India, visited Bichpuri as a volunteer for a 2-day programme. During his stay, he found that the biggest problem the local children faced was repeated power cuts, which made it difficult for them to study. That left a deep impact on Uday.
Uday came back to Delhi and took immediate action to approach the problem. He soon understood that residents of villages like Bichpuri couldn’t afford electrical devices. He wanted to find and develop a solution to rural India’s power shortage. After 24 attempts, the 18-year-old built the solution — Uday Electric — a bulb that can offer a power backup (备用) of almost 10 hours in case of a power cut.
Explaining how the bulb works, Uday states that the technology used is very simple. “When the bulb is connected to a power source, energy gets stored in the battery. When the power supply is cut off, the bulb uses the energy stored in the battery to give out light,” he explains.
At first, he established a bulb with a four-hour backup. But he wanted to provide a backup of 8-10 hours. Thanks to his love of computer science, he developed a way to change the bulb’s brightness, increasing the backup time without increasing the size of the battery. The bulb now comes with settings 1o change the brightness.
Uday sold each bulb at only 250 rupees (3 dollars) and has so far sold over 7,000 units in many remote villages. But what Uday did went beyond business; he donated 950 units to houses in the poorest areas through a non-governmental organisation, bringing joy to those living without electricity. “When I saw the joy on people’s faces when their houses were lit up, I felt on top of the world. No feeling could come close to it,” says Uday.
Uday won the Diana Award 2023, which honours “remarkable young people selflessly creating positive social change”. He wishes to bring bulb to as many houses as he can in the coming years.
24. What inspired Uday to invent Uday Electric?
A. An experiment he did at school. B. A volunteering experience.
C. His interest in computer science. D. The power cuts he faced every day.
25. What do we know about Uday Electric?
A It is small and solar-powered. B. It just can’t adjust the brightness.
C. It can work without batteries. D. It is affordable and effective.
26. Which of the following words can best describe Uday?
A. Honest and confident. B. Humorous and generous.
C. Determined and warm-hearted. D. Outgoing and independent.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Teen’s bright idea lights rural India B. A solution to end India’s power shortage
C. A young Indian changemaker giving back D. The inspiring journey of a teenage Indian’s success
B 25. D 26. C 27. A

根据第一段“In April 2022, Uday Bhatia, a student from Delhi, India, visited Bichpuri as a volunteer for a 2-day programme. During his stay, he found that the biggest problem the local children faced was repeated power cuts, which made it difficult for them to study.(2022年4月,来自印度德里的学生乌代·巴蒂亚作为志愿者访问了比奇普里,参加了一个为期两天的项目。在他逗留期间,他发现当地孩子面临的最大问题是反复停电,这使他们难以学习)”;第二段中“Uday came back to Delhi and took immediate action to address the problem.(乌代回到德里,立即采取行动解决这个问题)”和“After 24 attempts, the 18-year-old built the solution — Uday Electric — a bulb that can offer a power backup (备用) of almost 10 hours in case of a power cut.(经过24次尝试,这位18岁的年轻人终于找到了解决方案——Uday Electric——这种灯泡可以在停电的情况下提供近10小时的备用电力)”可知,是Uday的一次志愿者经历启发了他发明Uday Electric。
根据第五段“Uday sold each bulb at only 250 rupees (3 dollars) and has so far sold over 7,000 units in many remote villages.(乌代每个灯泡的售价仅为250卢比(合3美元),到目前为止,在许多偏远村庄已经售出了7000多只)”可知,Uday Electric的销量可观,说明乌代发明的灯泡是有效的,且价格便宜。
根据第二段“After 24 attempts, the 18-year-old built the solution — Uday Electric — a bulb that can offer a power backup (备用) of almost 10 hours in case of a power cut.(经过24次尝试,这位18岁的年轻人终于找到了解决方案——Uday Electric——这种灯泡可以在停电的情况下提供近10小时的备用电力)”以及倒数第二段“But what Uday did went beyond business; he donated 950 units to houses in the poorest areas through a non-governmental organisation, bringing joy to those living without electricity. “When I saw the joy on people’s faces when their houses were lit up, I felt on top of the world. No feeling could come close to it,” says Uday.(但乌代所做的不仅仅是生意;他通过一个非政府组织向最贫困地区的家庭捐赠了950套住房,给那些没有电的人带来了快乐。“当我看到人们的房子被点亮时脸上的喜悦时,我感到高兴极了。没有任何感觉可以接近它,”乌代说)”可知,Uday坚定且热心。故选C项。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其结合第二段中“He soon understood that residents of villages like Bichpuri couldn’t afford electrical devices. He wanted to find and develop a solution to rural India’s power shortage. After 24 attempts, the 18-year-old built the solution — Uday Electric — a bulb that can offer a power backup (备用) of almost 10 hours in case of a power cut.(他很快就明白,像比奇普里这样的村庄的居民买不起电器。 故选A项。
C
Research has shown that physical appearance has a big impact on a person’s mental health, social interactions and opportunities in life. Attractive people often benefit from social biases (偏见), while those seen as less attractive may face challenges like lower confidence, social exclusion and fewer opportunities.
A study done in 2022 showed how society’s views on appearance influence interactions. Participants were shown photos of people with different looks and asked to rate their intelligence, likability and trustworthiness. The results were clear: people considered more attractive received higher ratings in all categories. Furthermore, attractive people were more likely to be described as confident and capable, while less attractive individuals were often marginalized or associated with negative stereotypes This bias was especially noticeable in group settings, where attractive people were more likely to be included and listened to during discussions.
The emotional impact of this bias is also significant. Attractive people often have higher self-respect because they get more praises and positive feedback. However, this advantage comes with pressure, as attractive individuals may feel stressed about maintaining their appearance, leading to anxiety as they age. On the other hand, less attractive people often struggle with feelings of low self-worth, which contribute to depression and anxiety.
The workplace is also affected by these biases. Research shows that attractive people are more likely to be hired, promoted and earn higher salaries. Employers often naturally link attractiveness to ability, confidence and leadership qualities. This creates a disadvantage for people who don’t meet traditional beauty standards, forcing them to work harder to gain recognition.
To address these biases, researchers emphasize the importance of promoting inclusivity and challenging conventional social concepts. By encouraging self-acceptance and appreciating different kinds of beauty, society can create a fairer environment that values individuals for their character and abilities, not just their appearance.
28 What does the underlined word “marginalized” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Blamed. B. Disvauled. C. Included. D. Abused.
29. What impacts can appearance bias have on people?
A. Employers value looks over abilities.
B. Attractive people have better mental health.
C. Less attractive people are less likely to succeed.
D. Both attractive and less attractive face emotional challenges.
30. How can society create a fairer environment?
A. By overlooking outer beauty.
B By meeting social expectations.
C. By advocating enjoying diverse beauty.
D. By applying universal beauty standards.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To call for a fairer and more inclusive society.
B. To explain how appearance impacts individual life.
C. To address the psychological effects of appearance.
D. To argue that only attractive people can succeed in life.
B 29. D 30. C 31. A
根据第二段“people considered more attractive received higher ratings in all categories. Furthermore, attractive people were more likely to be described as confident and capable, while less attractive individuals were often … or associated with negative stereotypes
根据第三段“The emotional impact of this bias is also significant. Attractive people often have higher self-respect because they get more praises and positive feedback. However, this advantage comes with pressure, as attractive individuals may feel stressed about maintaining their appearance, leading to anxiety as they age. On the other hand, less attractive people often struggle with feelings of low self-worth, which contribute to depression and anxiety.(这种偏见的情感影响也很显著。有魅力的人通常自尊心更强,因为他们会得到更多的赞扬和积极的反馈。然而,这种优势也伴随着压力,因为有魅力的人可能会因为要保持自己的外表而感到压力,随着年龄的增长,这会导致焦虑。另一方面,不太有魅力的人常常与低自尊感作斗争,这会导致抑郁和焦虑。)”可知,有魅力和不太有魅力的人都面临情感挑战。故选D项。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“To address these biases, researchers emphasize the importance of promoting inclusivity and challenging conventional social concepts. By encouraging self-acceptance and appreciating different kinds of beauty, society can create a fairer environment that values individuals for their character and abilities, not just their appearance.(为了解决这些偏见,研究人员强调了促进包容性和挑战传统社会观念的重要性。
故选A项。
D
The Center for Digital Thriving (繁荣) , a new research and innovation center, was opened at Harvard Graduate School of Education. Its work seeks to change understanding of how young people and everyone else can thrive in a technology-filled world. The Center was founded by researchers Carrie James and Emily Weinstein, who have worked for more than a decade to explore the emerging (新兴的) digital landscape that young people are facing today and to answer questions about what it’s like for teens to grow up with social media.
“We can’t get around the simple truth that technology greatly shapes teens’ experiences today,” says Emily. “Technology is hugely important to students’ lives, learning, relationships and development. It matters for their well-being (幸福) and sense of self.”
Emily and Carrie explored these issues most recently in their book Behind Their Screens, which documents just how much adults have been missing in their understanding of how teens interact with the screens that surround them. “The main feature of our research has been slowing down and really listening to teens as they talk about growing up with today’s technologies,” says Carrie. “Putting teens’ voices and stories at the center has been transformative.”
The book shows adults are worried about teens and their screen time, noting that parents need to get rid of the “us-versus-them” mindset. Instead, learning how to take an “us-and-them” approach helps build connection and healthy tech habits. Emily advises against strict rules about social media use or blaming the current adolescent mental health problems entirely on social media or devices. Families, she explains, would be better off if parents discussed their child’s social media use in more positive ways. Be more of a coach, she says, and less of a judge.
In their previous research, Emily and Carrie found that text messages that were marked “read” without replies from the receiver were a common anxiety source for teens. Young people today need better access to the resources that can help them navigate the ups and downs of adolescence in the digital age. The Center is not only providing those resources but putting them where young people are, creating opportunities for all young people to thrive as technology continues to develop.
32. What message does paragraph 2 convey?
A. Technology helps improve students’ learning.
B. Technology affects teens’ growth to a great degree.
C. Teens should balance their online and offline time.
D. Adults should pay more attention to teens’ happiness.
33. What is special about Emily and Carrie’s research?
A. It focuses on the younger generation’s thoughts.
B. It observes the development of a number of teens.
C. It shows technology’s impact on teens’ mental health.
D. It stresses adults’ role in teens’ technology experiences.
34. What does Emily suggest adults do?
A Set a tight time limit on teens’ phone use.
B. Exercise parental authority all the time.
C. Guide teens’ online activities positively.
D. Encourage teens to stay away from their smartphones.
35. Why does the author mention the issue in the last paragraph?
A. To show mental problems during adolescence.
B. To encourage researchers to study teens’ mental health.
C. To present the necessity to provide help for teens.
D. To prove the resources shared by the Center are helpful.
B 33. A 34. C 35. C

根据第二段““We can’t get around the simple truth that technology greatly shapes teens’ experiences today,” says Emily. “Technology is hugely important to students’ lives, learning, relationships and development. It matters for their well-being (幸福) and sense of self.”

根据上文“Your talents, your passions and your mission are like the small wires (线). (你的天赋、热情和使命就像细小的线)”以及下文“From there, you’ll narrow the field further by looking at the specifics of different career options you’re most suited for.
根据上文“You might know what those talents are already, but go ahead and make a list of every one that comes to mind. (你可能已经知道自己有哪些天赋,但还是要把能想到的都列出来)”以及下文“Don’t leave out any of them, even if you don’t think it qualifies as a career skill. (不要遗漏任何一项,即使你认为它算不上职业技能)”可知,上文建议列出自己的天赋,下文说注意不要遗漏,E选项“These are all hints that tell you what your strengths are. (这些都是能告诉你自身优势所在的线索)”中的“These”指代上文“list of every one (天赋清单)”,“hints that tell you what your strengths are”解释了罗列天赋的意义,即发现自身优势,与下文“不遗漏任何一项”的建议相呼应,强调每个天赋对职业选择的参考价值。故选E项。
【38题详解】
根据上文“If you’re going to find a meaningful career, passion isn’t just a pipe dream but a must. It means the work will fulfill you. (若想找到有意义的职业,热情并非白日梦,而是必需品。它意味着这份工作能让你获得满足感)”以及下文“To keep commitment (投入) over a long time, you also need a deeper purpose. This purpose defines your mission: the contribution you want to make and the results you try to see.
根据下文“Matters like how much money you want to make and where you want to live are important too. Think about these questions to narrow down your options: How much money do you need to make? Do you want flexibility in your job? What kind of benefits are important to you? What kind of environment do you excel in? (你想赚多少钱、想在哪里生活这类问题也很重要。思考这些问题来缩小选择范围:你需要赚多少钱?你希望工作有灵活性吗?哪种福利对你很重要?你在什么样的环境中能发挥优势?)”可知,下文列举了一些选择职业时要考虑的实际问题,B选项“Think about practical parts of a job. (考虑工作的实际方面)”概括了本段核心内容,“practical parts”对应下文“赚钱、居住地点、工作灵活性、福利、工作环境”等实际问题,可作为段落小标题统领全段,引出具体思考方向。故选B项。
【40题详解】
根据上文“If you’ve managed to get through everything above and have a clear answer for what you’re wired to do, congratulations! If you’re still unsure, that’s okay. (如果你已经完成了以上所有步骤,并且明确知道自己适合做什么,那恭喜你!如果你仍然不确定,也没关系)”以及下文“There’s only so much career shopping you can do before you have to just go for it.

The ancient oak tree in the school courtyard served as the traditional “memories bank”. On the final day of senior year, students gathered to bury time capsules - letters to their future selves. Mia stood among them, clutching her sealed envelope with a heavy heart. Unlike others filled with hopes and dreams, hers contained a painful confession (忏悔) she had carried for three long years.
Her mind flashed back to the science lab, where her curiosity had led to disaster. Reaching for the school’s antique microscope, she accidentally knocked it from the table. It broke into two parts. She quickly picked them up and put them together. At this moment, the door opened revealing Ben, a quiet classmate, with Mr. Davies behind him. Ben came to fetch the microscope for an experiment. Hardly had he touched the microscope when it split into two parts.
To Mia’s astonishment, Ben quietly claimed responsibility. “I was moving it and it slipped,” he murmured, accepting the teacher’s disappointment that should have been hers. Mia watched in guilty silence as he bore the blame she deserved.
Now, watching Ben place his own letter in the hole and offer her a sad smile, Mia held the envelope tightly in her hand. The breeze rustled the oak leaves like whispering voices. She looked from the freshly dug earth to Ben’s figure, wondering if burying her truth was truly how she wanted to end her high school story.
Just as the dirt was about to cover the capsules, Mia suddenly stepped forward.

After telling the truth, Mia felt a light tap on her shoulder.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Just as the dirt was about to cover the capsules, Mia suddenly stepped forward. She raised her hand to stop the others, her eyes fixed on Ben. With a shaky voice, she told the story of the science lab incident—how she’d knocked over the antique microscope, how Ben had silently taken the blame, and the guilt that had haunted her ever since. As she spoke, her gaze never left Ben’s, and tears glistened in her eyes. The courtyard grew quiet, with only the rustle of oak leaves accompanying her words.
After telling the truth, Mia felt a light tap on her shoulder. She turned to see Ben, his previous sadness replaced by a calm expression. “I’ve waited three years to hear you say that,” he said softly. Mia felt the weight in her chest lift instantly, a wave of relief washing over her. She smiled back at Ben, then bent down to place her envelope into the hole—no longer carrying regret, but the peace of finally telling the truth.

B. By meeting social expectations.

A. Set a tight time limit on teens’ phone use.
