Australian coastal towns boast diverse landscapes, from golden beaches to rough cliffs. Each carries a unique charm shaped by local history and natural surroundings, offering far more than just seaside views.
Byron Bay, New South Wales
Byron Bay is famous as Australia’s easternmost point. Early risers gather at Cape Byron Lighthouse to watch the first sunrise in the country. The town’s main beach is perfect for surfing, even for beginners. Along Jonson Street, you’ll find cozy cafes serving fresh avocado pear toast and local coffee. Don’t miss the weekly Byron Bay Community Market, where craftsmen sell delicate handmade jewelry and souvenirs.
Port Douglas, Queensland
Located between the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, Port Douglas is a nature lover’s paradise. The Four Mile Beach, with its soft white sand and calm waters, is ideal for swimming. Every Saturday morning, the Port Douglas Market showcases tropical fruits like mangoes. Many visitors take day trips from here to explore the colorful coral reefs by diving.
Lorne, Victoria
Lorne sits along the iconic Great Ocean Road. The town is noted for its scenic coastal drives and the annual Lorne Pier to Pub swim — Australia’s largest open-water swimming event. Erskine Falls, a 30-meter waterfall surrounded by ferns (蕨类植物), is a short drive from the town center. In the evening, seafood restaurants along the foreshore serve fresh oysters and grilled shellfish.
Busselton, Western Australia
Busselton’s claim to fame is its 1.8-kilometer-long dock — the longest wooden dock in the Southern Hemisphere. Visitors can walk along the dock or take a small train to its end, where an underwater observatory lets you see colorful fish and coral reefs without getting wet. The Pacific Northwest’s misty woods weren’t just Rosemary’s backyard — they were her first classroom. Now, as Response’s new Community Education Coordinator, she’s taking that “Education through experience” spirit everywhere, turning lessons into stories kids will never forget.
Her favorite wilderness adventure unfolded on a spring morning with a group of fourth graders. Their mission was simple: find three “forest friends” and write a short story about each one. At first, the kids hung back, dragging their feet slowly as if they’d rather stay inside playing video games — until eight-year-old Leo suddenly dashed toward a bush, yelling, “Look! A squirrel with an acorn (橡树果) bigger than his head!” Rosemary dropped to her knees. “Let’s give him a name,” she said. They settled on “Mr. Nutkin,” and Leo scribbled(潦草地写) in his journal: “Mr. Nutkin is in a hurry. Maybe he’s hiding snacks for winter so he doesn’t get hungry.” Soon, everyone spread across the woods. When it was time to leave, Leo even stuffed a pinecone (松果) in his pocket, declaring it “for Mr. Nutkin’s house so he stays warm.”
Weeks later an envelope showed up on Rosemary’s desk, with Leo’s messy handwriting on the front. Inside was a drawing: a squirrel in a tiny pinecone house, next to a stick figure labeled “Me,” and a note: “Mr. Nutkin moved into his new home I put it in my backyard. Can we go back to the woods soon?”
That’s the magic of Rosemary’s teaching: it doesn’t end when the class does. Whether she’s in a church, a farm, or a forest, she turns lessons into connections — ones that stick long after the pinecones are collected and the journals are closed. Now, at Response, she still keeps that pinecone from the woods in her bag. It’s a reminder: the best education isn’t about facts on a page but about making kids feel like the world is their storybook — and they’re the ones getting to write the fun parts.
4. Why did Rosemary regard the woods as her first classroom?
A. She once taught her students there.
B. She learned by exploring nature there.
C. She experienced her first adventure there.
D. She did research on wildlife biology there.
5. What do the underlined words “hung back” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Struggled up nervously. B. Moved forward quickly.
C. Stayed behind hesitantly. D. Looked around curiously.
6. What is the purpose of Paragraph 3?
A. To describe Leo’s artistic talent.
B. To prove the lesson’s lasting impact.
C. To indicate Leo’s keeping his promise.
D. To share a continued story with readers.
7. How does Rosemary teach the kids?
A. By engaging them in real experiences.
B. By showing them secrets about nature.
C. By organizing them to play games outdoors.
D. By instructing them to write adventure journals.
C
Like the ever-shifting colors of the sky and sea, emotions move in waves: they gather gradually, reach the peak, and eventually fade, only to be succeeded by new ones. Studies indicate that when fully experienced, an emotion lasts at most ninety seconds. Yet so often, we find ourselves ensnared (掉入陷阱) in emotions that last far beyond — why?
The answer lies in how we feed emotions with our thoughts and stories. When we get stuck in overthinking why we feel a certain way, whether it’s justified, or why we shouldn’t feel it, we create a cycle that breathes new life into the emotion. Attempting to avoid or block emotions doesn’t make them disappear; instead, they get trapped inside us, which can even cause physical pain or tension.
Contrary to the popular view that emotions are a weakness, they are, in truth, an essential part of being human. We generally experience five core emotions: joy, sadness, fear, anger, and desire. Not naturally good or bad, they each serve as an essential instrument of our personal growth with their specific wisdom. For instance, joy connects us to appreciation, fear alerts us to the unknown, and anger signals a boundary being crossed.
To break free from unhelpful emotional cycles, we can apply the “fact vs. story” framework. By focusing on facts instead of stories, we can tap into our true feelings. Using simple emotional language — like “I’m sad,” “I’m happy,” or “I’m scared” — helps us relate to our basic emotions, which brings us out of a state of stress and into the present moment. Grounded in what is real, we focus on what can be influenced and cease wasting energy on things that exhaust us.
Feeling emotions fully without resistance liberates energy, clears the mind and supports sound decision-making. When emotions surface, ride the wave — experience them fully in our body, listen to their wisdom, and let them flow through. This is how emotions become a source of creativity and strength, guiding us to lead our lives with clarity and purpose.
8. Why do we feel emotions much longer than ninety seconds?
A We are too nervous to handle them wisely.
B. They are bound to be long-lasting naturally.
C. They involve our thoughts and stories deeply.
D. We need sufficient time to release them fully.
9. What does the author think of emotions?
A. They are sources of inner conflict.
B. They are signs of human weakness.
C. They are tools for self-improvement.
D. They are symbols of specific wisdom.
10. How should we get rid of unhelpful emotional circles?
A. By recognizing our true feelings partly.
B. By expressing our emotions objectively.
C. By analyzing our emotional language simply.
D. By joining basic emotions to stories logically.
11. Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A. Overthinking traps us inside true feelings.
B. Negative cycles arise from feeling emotions.
C. Deep analysis unlocks the door to emotional control.
D. Accepting emotions fully brings clarity and strength.
D
Recent research is challenging a long-standing belief: the idea that people are strictly “left-brained” or “right-brained” is far less fixed than we once assumed. This shift invites us to rethink how we understand brain function and personality.
Conventional wisdom has long split people into two distinct “brain types.” Those labeled “right-brained” are said to be creative and likely to describe the world in subjective terms. In contrast, “left-brained” individuals are thought to be analytical, focused on details and guided by logic. Despite all its popularity, this two-sided view of the brain may be incorrect.
To be clear, some brain functions are more concentrated on one side. We’ve learned this in part from studying stroke (中风) patients: when a specific brain region is damaged, certain abilities disappear. Damage to the front of the brain can reduce motivation and weaken creativity, while harm to the back may cause partial or complete blindness. These examples confirm that location matters for specific brain functions — but not for personality qualities.
When it comes to individual qualities like creativity or logical thinking, there’s little or no evidence tying them to one brain hemisphere (半球). Even advanced scans of mathematicians’ and artists’ brains reveal no consistent structural differences. A 2023 University of Utah study added weight to this: researchers analyzed brain scans of over 1,000 young people, dividing the brain into 7,000 regions to check for “sidedness” linked to personality. The study concluded the left-brained or right-brained idea is more a figure of speech than an accurate anatomical (解剖学) description. Researchers still study “brain laterality” (which sides dominate functions like language or facial recognition), but not personality.
If you’ve always seen yourself as a “numbers person” or a “creative type,” this research doesn’t change that — those strengths are still valid. But it does correct a common misconception: your personalities aren’t tied to one side of your brain. We still have much to learn about what shapes personality, but one-sided brain dominance almost certainly isn’t the key.
12. Which occupation probably suits “right-brained” people, based on conventional opinions?
A. Hairdresser. B. Librarian. C. Mathematician. D. Typist.
13. Why does the author mention stroke patients?
A. To prove one side of the brain operates specially.
B. To show different brain regions vary in functions.
C. To demonstrate brain damage changes personality.
D. To argue the two-sided view of the brain is wrong.
14. What is the author’s attitude to the 2023 study?
A. Favorable. B. Skeptical. C. Objective. D. Dissatisfied.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To clarify a widespread belief.
B. To introduce a groundbreaking study.
C. To confirm a long-standing assumption.
D. To correct a widely held misconception.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Social anxiety is more than just occasional shyness — it is a persistent and intense fear of being judged or criticized in social situations. ___16___ While it is normal to feel nervous before a speech, social anxiety can make daily activities — such as speaking in class, or attending gatherings — extremely upsetting.
Researchers are learning that anxiety disorders run in families, and that they have a biological basis. Anxiety disorders typically develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life experiences. Although social anxiety is highly treatable, only about one-third of those affected seek help. ___17___
There are practical ways to cope with social anxiety. One effective approach is to face fears gradually. Start with less challenging social tasks — such as greeting a classmate — and slowly progress to more difficult ones, like giving a short presentation. ___18___ They can shift attention away from yourself and keep the conversation flowing smoothly.
___19___ But the truth is that those opinions of others have no reflection on your worth or talents. Social anxiety treatment includes learning to be flawed (有缺陷的), while at the same time rejecting the need for approval from external sources. Consistently overestimating how much and how badly others think of you only causes you to be more depressed.
Rather than criticizing yourself after each social interaction, reward yourself instead. ___20___ You deserve the praise, and you will be more motivated to do it again if there are some self-high-fives or frozen yogurts on the back end.
A. Positive self-talk is another helpful tool.
B. Social anxiety is tied to feelings of being judged.
C. Left unaddressed, it may lead to loneliness or depression.
D. To prepare some open-ended questions also makes sense.
E. Being a perfectionist is fine in rocket science, but not in real life.
F. Individuals with this condition often imagine things going wrong in interactions.
G. Whether you attended a party or started a conversation, acknowledge your effort.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Eva ran a business that plans small events — like weekend parties for staff and their families — where conversations always turned to children, since most of her clients were parents. While others proudly shared stories of piano honours, math medals, or leadership roles, Eva would just sit there quietly, thinking of her daughter Amy and her nickname (绰号) “Number 23”.
Every time the school released exam results, Amy always ended up in 23rd place in her class of 50 regardless of subject or term. Each time Eva heard that nickname, she was desperate with worry.
One day, Eva and Amy attended a lovely get-together. During lunch, someone playfully asked the children about their dream jobs. One by one, they gave bold, ambitious answers — CEOs, engineers, and even a Nobel Prize winner. The adults clapped, praising each child enthusiastically.
Amy didn’t volunteer an answer. Instead, she was happily helping out — serving drinks, passing around cookies. When asked, Amy smiled, “I want to be a kindergarten teacher. I love little kids. I love dancing, singing, and playing with them.” The room fell silent. Amy’s words hit Eva hard, leaving her choked up.
Eva had done everything to help Amy improve her grades — hiring professional tutors, buying piles of reference books, and even packing “brain foods”. Amy tried hard, too. She gave up drawing, paper crafts, and weekend lie-ins. She shifted from one evening class to another, working endlessly through question after question. Yet her ranking never changed, which weighed heavily on Eva.
A few weeks later, Eva and her friends went hiking with their families. At lunch, two kids — one a top English student, the other a math medalist — got into a full-blown quarrel over a single slice of dessert. No one could calm them down. Then Amy stepped in with a sweet smile. “Let’s flip a coin,” she suggested. And just like that, the problem was settled. Everyone stood in stunned silence.
On the way back, their bus got stuck in traffic, and the kids grew impatient. Some started complaining, others kicked the seats, and a few even cried.
Some parents tried to calm the kids down but failed.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Eva was proud to see Amy turn chaos into joy.

【答案】Possible Version 1
Dear Brian,
I’m writing to share the survey results of students’ preferred oral activities. 85% of those surveyed prefer movie dubbing while 81% choose role playing. Those interested in debates or speeches account for 46% and 37% respectively.
The results indicate a clear preference for interactive and enjoyable activities. Such tasks combine entertainment and learning and tend to cause less anxiety than debates or speeches. Moreover, they involve multiple roles, allowing more students to participate.
Since movie-dubbing and role-playing are popular, alternating them every few weeks could keep the club dynamic and engaging. Whichever you choose, we are eager to take part. Looking forward to receiving your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
Possible Version 2
Dear Brian
I’m writing to share the survey results of students’ preferred oral activities. As is shown in the chart, movie dubbing is the most popular (85%), followed closely by role playing (81%). Debates and speeches are favored by 46% and 37% of those surveyed respectively.
The strong interest in movie dubbing and role playing suggests that students enjoy fun, creative ways to practice English. Both activities can encourage interaction and confidence, which can boost participation.
I strongly recommend movie dubbing. Not only is it effective for improving our pronunciation but it also makes learning more enjoyable. I would appreciate it if you consider my suggestion. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】范文:
Some parents tried to calm the kids down but failed. It was when frustration reached its peak that Amy’s cheerful voice rose above the chaos. “Can we play a song-guessing game?” she asked gently. To the adults’ surprise, Amy’s idea was greeted with a chorus of agreement. As Amy sang familiar tunes, the kids eagerly shouted out their guesses, some even singing along. Laughter and applause filled the bus, easing the restlessness caused by the traffic jam. Seeing the situation settled, the adults exchanged relieved, admiring glances, amazed at how effortlessly Amy had transformed the mood.
Eva was proud to see Amy turn chaos into joy. In that moment, she finally realized that success wasn’t measured only by rankings or medals, but by kindness, empathy, and the quiet power to warm others. Amy might always be “Number 23” on the class list, but when it comes to gentle strength, she would always rank first. Eva’s long-held anxiety over rankings began to fade. From then on, whenever conversations at events turned to children’s achievements, Eva would smile and proudly share stories of Amy’s kindness and the joy she brought to everyone around her.
