For Sam, his smartphone was his lifeline, his fun, and his way to avoid socializing. His father often said, “Sam, look up! The real world is happening right in front of you!” But Sam just stayed silent, eyes glued to the ____13____.
Then an accident happened. One rainy afternoon, rushing for the bus, he lost his balance. His phone flew from his hand and ____14____ screen-down on the ground. The screen was a spiderweb of cracks and completely dead. Sam felt disconnected and lost.
The first evening was terrible. He picked up a book but couldn’t ____15____. He thought about his phone every two minutes. The next day at school was worse. At lunch while his friends laughed over a popular video, he just sat there, unable to join in. He had no choice but to…listen.
And an amazing thing happened. He ____16____ heard the conversations. He heard his friend Mark saying he was scared of failing the math test. Sam realized he felt the exact same way and, for the first time, said, “Yeah, me too. Maybe we can study together?” He heard Sarah talking softly about her sick dog, and he offered a real, heartfelt “I’m so sorry,” instead of just sending a sad emoji () later.
On the bus ride home, with no screen to hide behind, he looked out of the window. He noticed an elderly man, Mr. Jenkins from his street, having trouble with two heavy bags in the rain. Without thinking, Sam got off at the next stop and came back to ____17____ him. Mr. Jenkins felt very thankful and invited him in for a cup of hot chocolate. His apartment was full of model airplanes and old maps. For an hour, Sam was attracted by stories of Mr. Jenkins’ youth as a navigator (领航员). It was better than any movie.
As the week went on Sam started doodling (涂鸦) in an old notebook, something he hadn’t done for years. He showed his drawings to his dad, who, surprised and excited, dug out his own designs of buildings from college. They spent a whole evening ____18____ their art, talking and laughing more than they had in years.
When his repaired phone finally arrived, Sam held it with ____19____ feelings. He turned it on. Many messages flooded in, but the urgency (紧迫性) was gone. The Perfect Age
The assignment (任务) was up on the blackboard for my ninth-grade students: “What is the perfect age, and why would you like to be that age?” I hoped this writing assignment would help them think about their life goals. I could tell by their expressions that maybe this would work.
They had half an hour to do the assignment. After that, I collected their papers. I was excited to see their ideas.
Hilda asked me how old I was. When I told her I was twenty-three, she wrote she wanted to be the same age. She said she would like to be a ninth-grade teacher and have fun with her students like I always seemed to do. I was glad it looked like fun to her!
Several boys wanted to be football players, play for well-known clubs and compete around the world. The ages they thought were perfect differed, but the results were the same. They saw sports as their career (职业) to live a meaningful life and make money. Jorge said he would use the money to buy his mom a new house with a bedroom for each member of the family. That would be eight bedrooms!
But I always remember Victoria’s story. She was a shy, bright and thoughtful child. She never said much, but you could see her thinking deeply. She thought for ten minutes, then picked up her pencil and wrote something that has stayed with me my whole life. In the assignment, she became the teacher, and I was the student learning from a wise 14-year-old.
Victoria wrote that every age was the perfect age. She wrote that life was designed that way so we could experience each chapter(篇章)of it. She said it was wonderful how we got to experience our first day of school in kindergarten (幼儿园), making friends throughout our school experience, graduating from university, hopefully getting married, having children, and perhaps living long enough to have grandchildren or even great-grandchildren.
As a 67-year-old woman now, when I wish I were younger, I would remember Victoria’s wisdom. Amazingly, as a 14-year-old, Victoria saw that every part of life was important.
24. Why did the writer give the writing assignment?
A. To help students think about their life goals.
B. To encourage students to build a successful career.
C. To teach students how to lead a perfect life in the future.
D. To ask students to record their wonderful time at school.
25. According to Jorge’s writing, what did he want to do with his money?
A. Buy a house for his mom.
B. Start his own football club.
C. Travel around the world with his family.
D. Improve how he would train for football.
26. What does the writer learn from Victoria’s writing?
A. The meaning of life is to find our own perfect age.
B. The beauty of life is found through all its different stages.
C. Life is the most wonderful when we achieve the goals we set.
D. Life is perfect when we are old enough to understand its design.
C
We often help others out of care or kindness. But is helping always nice? In my research, I discovered that sometimes the help children provide to peers (同伴) can be harmful.
Imagine that a classmate asks you for help on a word puzzle which you are good at. How will you help them? You could offer a hint (线索). This is called indirect help, which allows your classmate to learn to work out the answers on their own. Maybe next time they’ ll not need help because they now know how to solve it. But you could also help by simply giving your classmate the correct answer. This is called direct help. It makes the task easier for your classmate, but it also takes away their chance to learn. They’ll still need help when they do a similar task again.
In most cases, it is probably better to give indirect help because it helps others learn more in the long run. After all, indirect help teaches others to become better at something. It’s like an old saying: “Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
To test whether children give more indirect or direct help when they are helping their peers, my team did an experiment with children aged 7-9. In the experiment, they were told they were going to be quiz (测验) masters and help two peers take a quiz. They could either give indirect or direct help.
The experimenter also told the children how their peers did on another quiz—one peer answered many questions incorrectly and the other answered many correctly. We wanted the children to think one peer was good at the quiz and the other one was not. This way, we could test if children give different kinds of help when they think others are good at something or struggle (挣扎) with it. And they did. The results, as can be seen from the bar chart (柱状图), showed that ________.
So, if children help in this way, what will happen in the end? The difference in ability between struggling and non-struggling peers gets bigger. Also, getting more direct help might make peers feel worse about themselves, and other children might think they are less smart.
Then, what can we do? One solution is to teach children about the different kinds of help and make sure they help in ways that are not harmful. That is why I wrote this article—the next time you offer to help someone, I hope you remember to give them the right kind of help!
27. What might happen to peers who receive more direct help?
①They might become unsure of themselves.
②They might choose more difficult tasks to do.
③Fewer children might help them with future challenges.
④Classmates might start to think less positively about them.
A. ①③ B. ②③ C. ①④ D. ②④
28. The results of the experiment as can be seen from the bar chart, showed that ________.
A. when children help peers, the likelihood of giving direct help is greater
B. when children think peers don’t struggle, they’ll choose not to give direct help
C. when children help struggling peers, they’ll give less indirect help than direct help
D. when children think peers struggle, the possibility of giving direct help increases
29 What can we learn from the passage?
A. Children are expected to offer more help to their struggling peers.
B. Indirect help builds more lifelong skills in children than direct help,
C. The kind of help children give depends heavily on peers’ intelligence,
D. The experiment aims at teaching children to give indirect help to peers.
D
Have you ever followed the suggestions of a digital writing assistant (助手) to replace a word or restructure a sentence without knowing how, why or even whether it made your writing better? Before the age of digital tools, our parents and grandparents turned to dictionaries for the same assistance. They picked up a heavy book, looked up what words meant and how they were used, and then carefully chose the language to express their ideas.
In today’s world of spell-check, auto-correct and artificial intelligence (AI), each of which can help make those choices for us, why should we keep producing and using heavy physical dictionaries?
Dictionaries help us write with originality (原创性) and a point of view. AI assistants manufacture (批量生产) statements so writers don’t have to think them up, while dictionaries provide us with knowledge to use language ourselves in expressive ways. They place choice right in human hands, forcing us to discover how we want to explain ourselves and our ideas to the world.
Dictionaries aren’t just lists of words and meanings; they’ re also instructions for how best to use those words. For centuries, English dictionaries have shown the language of certain populations. At the same time, by systematizing the meanings, uses and connotations (内涵) of words, those same dictionaries have shaped language.
Today, the numerous kinds of digital writing assistants require us to reconsider the role of dictionaries. In 1946, George Orwell, a famous British writer and journalist, described good writing as “picking out words because of their meaning”, a practice that dictionaries catalyze while digital writing assistants hold back. The assistants build your sentences and even think your thoughts for you, so writers who are guided by an app have their choices made for them. But writers who use a dictionary make a choice.
It’s a fight between robotic consistency (一致性) and human creativity. Digital writing assistants say their users can rewrite full passages with a click and keep the writing style consistent, while dictionaries provide imperfect writers with a guide to English’s possibilities, so they will get the chance to think critically (批判地) about what and how to write.
Our ability to express ourselves is important— it helps us explain our culture and our being. Dictionaries aid us in achieving this: They record our ways of thinking through language.
As digital writing becomes more common in our lives, we need dictionaries more than ever, not to write quickly and correctly, but to build relationships with the words we use. Giving up on dictionaries would hurt our ability to express ourselves. Without a reason for self-expression and lifelong learning, we have to ask ourselves: Why write at all?
30. What can we learn about physical dictionaries?
A. They make choices for writers.
B. They inspire expressive wording.
C. They focus on explaining meanings.
D. They create more productive writers.
31. What does the word “catalyze” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. Shape. B. Follow. C. Encourage. D. Slow.
32. Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?
A. AI assistants have a negative influence on people’s writing consistency.
B. AI assistants improve people’s critical thinking skills through writing.
C. Dictionaries change people’s ways of thinking by recording language.
D. Dictionaries help keep people from losing their creativity in writing.
33. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A. Write Quickly or Express Correctly
B. Dictionaries Matter in the Digital Age
C. From Human Choice to Digital Voice
D. Dictionaries Work with Digital Assistants
第二部分
本部分共5题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。
四、阅读表达(第34-36题每题2分,第37题4分,共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
There’s a lot of fear around spending time alone. Alone time can make people really bored. Worse, some articles and studies warn us about the dangers of loneliness—one in 2017 says loneliness is as bad as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Another in 2023 presents the risks of chronic (长期的) loneliness, such as increased risks of disease.
However, not all alone time is the same. There’s chronic loneliness—and there’s solitude (独处). One is a serious problem. The other is a skill we must develop.
Chronic loneliness happens when there is unhappiness about the state of having few friends or a sense of social isolation (隔离). But we do so many activities alone that don’t come with the dangers of chronic loneliness—reading a book, doing an art project or cooking a meal. This kind of positive alone time is called solitude, which is a state of being free of the requirements of others. While chronic loneliness is bad for our health, solitude can be the opposite.
Yet we don’t know how to welcome it, and we often avoid it. We sometimes stay in bad relationships so as not to be alone.
This isn’t surprising. One of the main parts of chronic loneliness is social isolation. According to John Cacioppo, a professor at the University of Chicago, loneliness is a biological sign similar to hunger or thirst. When we are in a state of painful loneliness, it is our bodies that give us information to find social support or social ties.
However, being more in touch with our loneliness sensors helps us use the healthy kind of alone time. You wouldn’t be ashamed of needing water when thirsty, so why should you feel bad about feeling lonely? What’s more, we might have more control over how connected we feel with others than we think. According to a Yale’s study, if you can feel connected with loved ones even when you’re not around them, you can still feel socially connected.
I am a believer in finding your best solitude style. I encourage those who don’t like being alone to try it out once. You may find yourself looking for it again and again. Taking a hike in the woods alone allows you to look at nature more closely than hiking with a friend.
When you save a meaningful moment for just you, you get to be the only maker of your experiences.
34. When does chronic loneliness happen?
______________________________
35. According to the passage, what is solitude?

36. What is the benefit of being more in touch with our loneliness sensors?

37. Do you think it is necessary for you to make time for solitude? Why or why not? (Please give two reasons. )

A. ①③ B. ②③ C. ①④ D. ②④
28. The results of the experiment, as can be seen from the bar chart, showed that ________.
A. when children help peers, the likelihood of giving direct help is greater
B. when children think peers don’t struggle, they’ll choose not to give direct help
C. when children help struggling peers, they’ll give less indirect help than direct help
D. when children think peers struggle, the possibility of giving direct help increases
29. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Children are expected to offer more help to their struggling peers.
B. Indirect help builds more lifelong skills in children than direct help,
C. The kind of help children give depends heavily on peers’ intelligence,
D. The experiment aims at teaching children to give indirect help to peers.
【答案】27. C 28. D 29. B

根据“indirect help helps others learn more in the long run…‘Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime’”可知,间接帮助比直接帮助更能培养孩子的终身技能。故选B。
