One day in 1903, when Benedictus was working in his lab, something unexpected happened! He dropped a glass to the ground 6 . To his surprise, the glass cracked (破裂), but it didn’t break into pieces. Out of 7 , he checked it carefully.
After many experiments, Benedictus discovered something important: if he put a thin film (薄膜) of plastic 8 two pieces of glass, the glass would become very strong! This discovery helped him invent safety glass.
Today, people use safety glass 9 —in cars, buildings and more. His 10 has helped reduce (减少) the risk of people getting hurt by broken glass.

①A new kind of transport will be with us in the next few years—flying taxis. Many of us grew up watching sci-fi movies with flying taxis. They are now becoming a science fact.
②The Japanese airline ANA teamed up with a US tech start-up called Joby Aviation. The two companies are now working together to build the flying taxis. They also need to work out what traffic rules the taxis will need to follow, and what kind of training flying taxi pilots will need. The five-seat, all-electric taxis will be able to take off and land freely. They will fly about 300 kilometres an hour,
③Joby’s CEO said the taxis would be good for the environment. He told reporters, “Joby helps people save time while cutting down their carbon footprint (碳排放量). Japan offers us a good chance to do that, with 92% of the population living in cities, and Tokyo being one of the top 20 busiest cities in the world.” The president of ANA was also excited about the project. He said, “ANA has 70 years of experience. It is able to offer people a chance to travel quickly from an international airport to the centre of a city.” The two companies successfully tested a flying taxi for the first time in 2020.
④So, the flying taxis are closer to our life. People’s dream of taking a flying taxi will come true.

There are a lot of reasons to go out in nature to look around. It makes us feel happy and helps us know about plants and animals.
For most scientists, however, nature gives out something more—the ideas to improve people’s life. They study bees to work out how small robots might “talk” to report the weather. They look at geckos’ (壁虎的) feet to find how to make tape. They study fruit flies to help doctors save people’s lives.
“There are so many fun ways that animals develop to solve problems, and some of them are ones we never think of,” says Lisa Manning, a professor of the bioinspired (生物启发的) center. Zhenyu Gan is a robot engineer in the center. He makes robots with four legs or more, instead of robots with wheels.
To find out how legged robots could stand or walk, Gan looks to animals such as horses and mice. “The first thing we have to understand is how they move.” Gan says.
“Usually, robots with two legs like people are clumsy. Just think about how a baby learns to stand and walk. But my robots have four legs or more, just like horses, making the robots walk or run easily and fast.” says Gan.
Gan’s robots have lots of uses. They can explore the moon. Hospitals use doglike robots to work with doctors. Police use legged robots to search fallen buildings for missing people.
1.According to the passage, when going out in nature, a group of scientists may ________.
A.build houses to protect animals B.enjoy the beautiful view around
C.play games with animals D.study how birds can fly to invent planes
2.Gan may invent the following robots except ________.
A.B.C.D.
3.What is the purpose of writing this passage?
A.To introduce changes of bioinspired ideas. B.To tell us it’s hard to study animals.
C.To show us how animal ways help in our lives. D.To find out different reasons to look at nature.

Nowadays, people like our parents are busy 1 (work). Housework, such as washing clothes or taking out the rubbish, worries most of them. 2 (solve) this problem, scientists at Stanford University in the US invented 3 robot called Mobile ALOHA.And it became 4 (popular) of all the robots online.
In the videos posted, we can see the robot preparing meals by itself, from washing the vegetables 5 cutting carrots with a knife. It’s also good at watering plants, folding clothes and sweeping the floor.
It seems that Mobile ALOHA can do 6 (good) in all things. 7 , another video posted by researchers may disappoint some people. Mobile ALOHA has problems doing some other 8 (chore). It can’t finish all the tasks on its own. Instead, it learns from humans before doing each kind of housework. 9 the situation changes, it may cause problems without a human “teaching” it. For example, robots may break 10 (dish) when cooking.
In short, housework robots are far from perfect. They still have a long way to go.

Bi Sheng was born in the Song Dynasty. He lived in a small village which lies in Huanggang today. He invented the movable type printing around 1041-1048 AD.He was the world’s first 1 (invent) of the printing. It is about 400 years 2 (early) than the printing in Germany. But how 3 (do) it work in the past?
First of all, the clay was made into movable types. Then words were engraved (雕刻) carefully onto the types. 4 that, the words were chosen and put in right order in a box according to the text. Next, the workers brushed ink onto the movable types. Finally, the types could be used 5 printing. They could be used again and again for different 6 (book).
The movable type printing plays 7 important role in Chinese culture. With the help of it, Chinese culture spread around the world more 8 (quick). At the same time, the movable type printing was widely used in the world in the 9 (fifteen) century. As a result, more and more culture communication among countries took place.
The movable type printing, the compass (指南针), gunpowder and paper-making are called four great inventions of China. 10 (them) make China own an important and even top position (位置) in the history of human civilization.

Not many years ago, there was a world without smartphones. Let’s get into a time machine and make a quick trip back to that pre-smartphone age.
The first stop is communication. Back then, communication was a more difficult process (过程). People wrote letters with a pen and paper. 1 . There was also something nervous about dialing a number on a physical keypad (小键盘) and waiting for the other person to pick up. Those were the days before emails. Feelings were simply expressed through words alone.
Next, let’s talk about navigation (导航). Before Baidu Maps, people used physical (实体的) maps to find their way. 2 And if you unfortunately ended up getting lost, you’d have to ask a stranger for directions.
3 There was no WeChat or Douyin. People read books, watched TV indoors or just spent time outdoors. In the pre-smartphone age, people also had a different relationship with time. 4 . We had to set our alarm clocks every night before going to bed. And we used physical calendars to mark important dates and events.
5 . It was a simple time of patience and being present in the moment. And who knows? Maybe one day, we’ll be looking back on the days before AI came into everyday life.
A.Entertainment (娱乐) was very different, too.
B.We checked the time with watches and clocks.
C.I still remember the excitement of opening a handwritten letter
D.There was a pleasure in finding your way on a large map.
E.In conclusion, life before smartphones was different but not worse.
F.We had to remember phone numbers instead of saving them in a phone.

With the development of science and technology, our life is becoming more and more convenient (方便的). It seems that everything has greatly 1 (improve). But there is one thing unlike them. It’s the blind (盲的) walking stick. People invented it over 100 years ago and it has been used by many blind people for a long time.
However, it kept unchanged until an engineer named Kursat decided 2 (make) a change. Kursat is blind. He 3 (deep) understands the difficulties and challenges (挑战) that the blind face. He put some technical knowledge into his 4 (invent) and invented a smart stick. He hoped his invention would help the blind.
The smart stick uses built-in speakers and different sensors (传感器) 5 (warn) about possible dangers. It helps blind people know about the environment around them 6 using modern technology. It makes their travel much 7 (easy) than before. The stick is priced at around $500. It is less than half the price of most smartphones. Most people can afford it.
In the future, this invention is going to make a big difference to more blind people. “It will not only change my life, 8 also the lives of other people,” Kursat said. “These days, we are talking about flying cars, but the blind have been using just simple sticks. 9 a blind person, when I am at the subway station, I don’t know which is my exit. I don’t know which bus is coming or which stores are around me. But now, the smart stick can provide 10 lot of information for the blind, ” he said, “I believe the life of the blind will be much more convenient and safer.”
