I’m Dr. David Picken and I have one of the coolest jobs on and off the earth. I’m a flight surgeon, or an astronaut doctor, at NASA Johnson Space Center, in Houston, Texas.
Growing up, I wanted to be a doctor. I also wanted to be a pilot. At a career fair in college, I saw a poster which was a person climbing into an airplane. The poster said that this person’s job was to be a flight surgeon. I thought, “Cool! I can be a doctor and I get to fly!”
After graduating from a medical school, I did six months of extra training to learn about all the ways that flying can affect the human body. Different forces act differently on the body in the air than on the ground. They can affect the concentration (浓度) of oxygen you are breathing. This can affect how well your mind works. All of these things can change a pilot’s ability to safely fly the aircraft.
This is where the flight surgeon comes in. We take care of them when they get sick or injured. A flight surgeon’s job is to keep a pilot doing his or her job: flying.
As a flight surgeon, I also get a chance to fly. I get a firsthand understanding of all those effects on the body, and that makes me better take care of my patients. And it’s fun to fly! That brings me to my new job, as a flight surgeon at NASA (美国宇航局), where I take care of astronauts. In space, there are other effects on the body, such as zero gravity. This firstly affects your balance system, so it’s common for astronauts to feel a little seasick in their first couple of days. While astronauts are in space, we watch and talk to them from Mission Control (任务控制中心) to help take care of their health. After they return to the earth, we look after them and guide their reconditioning. We also work with the engineers who design spaceships. We’re part of a big team that gets astronauts to space and home safely.
It’s a pretty cool job to help get someone ready to fly to space, take care of them while they’re out there, and see them when they come home.

A.He can fly to space with the astronauts in the spaceship.
B.He can change the concentration of oxygen the pilots breathe in.
C.He can take care of the pilots’ and astronauts’ health.
D.He can drive the spaceship when the astronauts feel seasick.
3.The writer thinks his work is ______.
A.easy but boring B.hard and dangerous
C.important and helpful D.tiring but interesting

Red is a national color in China. It has deeply influenced Chinese culture and traditions. People use it a lot, from celebrations and festivals to everyday life.
The use of red dates back to ancient times. There is a statue (雕像) of the Yellow Emperor in Beijing. And from it, we can see the Emperor wears a red robe (长袍). During the Han Dynasty, red showed how important someone was. And people often used it when they got married or in other celebrations. In the Tang Dynasty, red became a popular color for clothing.
In Chinese culture, red is a special color. It means a lot of good things and feelings. It’s a color of joy and good luck. People use it to bring happiness and drive bad things away. It’s common to see it at weddings (婚礼), on birthdays, and during the Chinese New Year. It’s a color of wealth and health. People often wear or carry something red. It’s also a color of power and energy.
Today, red is still important in Chinese culture and society. The National Flag of the People’s Republic of China is red, with five yellow stars on the top left. And now red is a hot color in fashion. More and more people choose to wear traditional wedding dresses at weddings. Some Chinese expressions with red are still used today. For example, the phrase “Mianhong erchi” describes someone who is so angry that his face turns red. We can learn that red is not only for joy and celebration, but also connected to strong feelings.

1.词句猜测题。根据“There is a statue (雕像) of the Yellow Emperor in Beijing. And from it, we can see the Emperor wears a red robe (长袍).”可知,前文提及了北京的黄帝雕像,后文“it”指代的就是这个雕像,即从雕像中能看到黄帝穿着红色长袍。故选C。
2.细节理解题。根据“In Chinese culture, red is a special color. It means a lot of good things and feelings. It’s a color of joy and good luck... It’s a color of wealth and health... It’s also a color of power and energy.”可知,红色象征着快乐与好运、财富与健康、权力与活力,文中未提及“尊重与和平”。故选D。
3.主旨大意题。根据“Today, red is still important in Chinese culture and society.”是该段的主旨句,后文围绕国旗的红色、时尚领域的红色以及含红色的中文表达等内容,都是在阐述红色在现代中国的重要性。故选B。

Not everyone sees colors the same way. Research finds clear differences between boys and girls in how they see colors. A study from the University of California tested 500 adults (250 men and 250 women). They looked at how well people recognize colors, tell similar colors apart, and name different colors.
How People See Colors
Boys/Men
Girls/Women
Telling similar colors apart
65% correct
82% correct
Number of colors named correctly
Average 12
Average 18
Noticing soft colors
Less good
Better
Scientists think two things cause these differences. First, it’s about biology. The X chromosome (a part of our genes) affects color vision. Girls have two X chromosomes, but boys have one. This means girls may have more cells in their eyes that find colors. Second, social factors matter too—girls are often encouraged to notice and talk about colors when they are young.
These differences change daily life. For example, girls may be better at jobs like picking room colors or fashion. Boys often care more about shapes and movement, so they may be good at jobs like fixing cars, repairing bikes or building model planes.
1.What percentage of girls/women can tell similar colors apart correctly?
A.65%. B.82%. C.12%. D.18%.
2.Why do girls have better color perception (感知) according to the passage?
A.They have more chromosomes. B.They focus more on shape and movement.
C.They have fewer color-detecting cells. D.They get more encouragement to notice colors.
3.What kind of job may boys be good at based on the passage?
A.Choosing clothes. B.Designing rooms.
C.Building model planes. D.Picking paint colors.
根据第三段“Scientists think two things cause these differences...Second, social factors matter too—girls are often encouraged to notice and talk about colors when they are young.”
根据最后一段“Boys often care more about shapes and movement, so they may be good at jobs like fixing cars, repairing bikes or building model planes.”可知,男孩可能擅长修理汽车、修理自行车或制作模型飞机等需要关注形状和运动的工作。C项“Building model planes建造模型飞机”符合。故选C。
The way younger people think about spending money and their lifestyle is changing. A new idea called “reverse consumption” has appeared. This means people are no longer buying expensive things like brand-name bags or clothes. Instead, they care more about getting good value for their money.
Reverse consumption encourages people not to waste. Unlike traditional buying habits, it refuses to keep buying new products and pays more attention to the quality of products. This idea has become popular with younger people and has influenced their buying decisions. This change in spending habits shows that young people care about different things in life now.
Many young people are starting to realize that having lots of material goods doesn’t bring true happiness. They are more interested in personal growth, spiritual (精神的) wealth, and the building of social relationships. Because of this, they pay more attention to their inner needs. Besides focusing on growing as a person, they also start to care about how their actions affect the environment.
This new way of thinking helps young people notice bigger problems like pollution and climate change. They know that wasteful spending can harm the environment, causing plenty of unnecessary waste and pollution, so they are trying to reduce their influence on the environment. It is changing what people do and making the world different.
In addition, the idea of reverse consumption is also bringing changes in society. Companies are being pushed to take social and environmental responsibility (责任) more seriously, and to think more about social interests when designing and making things.
1.According to the article, what is “reverse consumption” in Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.Buying bags or clothes at lower prices.
B.Giving up spending money completely.
C.Saving money to buy more cheap things later.
D.Getting good value for money and avoiding waste.
2.From Paragraph 3 we can infer (推断) that young people today ________.
A.believe true happiness comes from inside growth
B.no longer care about their personal looks
C. only notice material goods around them
D.think owning more bags brings social respect
3.How does reverse consumption change companies?
A.It helps companies to give up social interests.
B.It makes companies produce more brand-name products.
C.It encourages companies to make products that increase waste.
D.It pushes companies to think of social and environmental responsibility.
4.What is the main purpose of this passage?
A.To explain reverse consumption and its influence.
B.To ask readers not to buy more brand-name products.
C.To tell readers that young people should stop spending money.
D.To tell people to only buy products that are good for the environment
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.D 4.A

2.推理判断题。根据“Many young people are starting to realize that having lots of material goods doesn’t bring true happiness...they also start to care about how their actions affect the environment.”可知,年轻人意识到大量物质财富不能带来真正的幸福,他们更关注个人成长、精神财富和人际关系的建立,更重视内在需求。由此可以推断,年轻人认为真正的幸福来源于内在的成长。故选A。
3.细节理解题。根据“Companies are being pushed to take social and environmental responsibility more seriously, and to think more about social interests when designing and making things”可知,反向消费促使企业更加重视社会责任和环保责任。故选D。
4.主旨大意题。全文先解释了反向消费的定义,接着讲述它如何影响年轻人的消费观念和环保意识,最后说明它对企业发展的推动作用。因此,文章的主要目的是阐释反向消费的内涵及其带来的影响。故选A。
A recent study by Arber Tasimi, a graduate student at Yale University and Liane Young, a professor at Boston College, found that kids who do good and think back on it are driven to do more and more good. As Tasimi says, “These findings show that something as simple as asking children to reflect (反思) on their past good deeds (行为) has positive effects on children’s behavior.”
To carry out the study, the researchers recruited (招募) 225 children aged six to eight. They gave each child five stickers and divided them into different groups: Some children recalled a time they were nice to someone (the nice group); others recalled a time they were mean (刻薄的) to someone or when someone was nice to them. As a comparison, another group of kids was asked about a time they watched a movie.
The researchers then showed the children an image of a fictitious (假想的) character, Gary, who had no stickers. Children were asked whether they wanted to give Gary any of their five stickers, and those in the nice group gave the most stickers. In other words, these children behaved more generously (慷慨地) compared to their peers in the other groups.
“Recalling one’s own positive behaviors—rather than recalling positive behaviors more generally—increases generosity in children,” the researchers conclude.
As the researchers note, after adults have performed a number of good deeds—thus accruing (积累) “moral credit”-they cut back on their generosity. Would children behave meanly after they recalled some examples of their goodness?
To explore this possibility, the researchers asked another group of children to remember three different times when they were nice to someone. They found that these children behaved just as generously as those who had recalled a single example of their past goodness; children, it seems, don’t give out good deeds in a calculating (计算) way.
If parents want to raise kind children, this study suggests, they can reinforce (强化) good behavior by praising their children’s past kindnesses and offering gentle reminders when they’re deciding whether to share.
In the future, Tasimi hopes to find out other factors that lead children to do greater good. He is especially interested in examining the role of peer influence on children’s generosity. He says kids are probably more likely to copy a classmate’s fashion choices than Dad’s. In other words, children could be positive role models for each other.
1.The researchers divided the children into different groups to find out _____.
A.why they are mean to Gary. B.who can recall their past kindnesses.
C.how to get the most stickers. D.what can increase children’s generosity.
2.According to the writer, who is probably the most generous?
A.The boy who has got help from his neighbors.
B.The boy who has ever seen his parents’ past goodness.
C.The boy whose parents often ask him to be nice to others.
D.The boy whose parents often tell stories about his kind acts in the past.
3.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Recalling others’ positive behaviors rather than their own can improve generosity.
B.Recalling children’s own kindness can help them do greater good.
C.Children behave meanly after recalling many examples of their goodness.
D.Parents’ behavior has a greater influence on children than their peers’.

2.推理判断题。根据“If parents want to raise kind children...they can reinforce (强化) good behavior by praising their children’s past kindnesses and offering gentle reminders when they’re deciding whether to share.”
根据“Recalling one’s own positive behaviors...increases generosity”及“kids who do good and think back on it are driven to do more good”可知,回忆自己的善举能帮助孩子做更多好事。故选B。
Do you know some famous table tennis players? Who is Ni Xialian? At the age of 61, Ni Xialian, the oldest table tennis player, never felt out of place in Paris.
Ni Xialian was the former Chinese world champion player, but now she represents Luxembourg. She gave out her full strength against her much younger opponent from her home country—23-year-old Sun Yingsha—on July 31, 2024.
After finishing her sixth Olympic appearance, Ni emotionally gave thanks by bowing to the audience and said at the after-match interview that her dream of playing again at the Olympics and competing with the world’s top player had come true.
Before facing Sun at the opposite side of the table, “Aunt Ni” was invited to serve as a training partner to China’s mixed doubles champions Sun Yingsha and Wang Chuqin before their face-off with a DPRK pair in the final game, because of the similarity of her technique to that of the DPRK’s female player.
Throughout Sun and Ni’s match, the CCTV commentators (解说员) kept referring to Ni as “Master Ni” instead of using her full name to show respect for her contribution to China’s table tennis and also for her efforts in promoting the sport in Europe and around the world.
“I truly enjoy the shared slogan of the Paris Olympics and Paralympics ‘Games wide open’. To me, it means ‘wide open’ not only for any competitor who embodies (体现) the Olympic spirit but also for any performance or choice made by an Olympian,” Ni said.
Not representing China though, Ni is still winning her home country’s heart and, I believe, will always be cherished by China and the sport because the Olympics and its fans are increasingly inclusive.

B.Because she lost to Sun Yingsha in the singles match.
C.Because her technique is similar to the DPRK’s female player’s.
D.Because she is from China and she could try her best to give a hand.

The Art of Mime
What do you think of when you see a man with a white painted face, wearing white gloves and a black hat? In the West, this scene might come to mind when they think of mime. Mime is the art of acting without using speech. The word can also refer to a person who performs this art. This type of art has grown and changed over the centuries. What began as a simple form of communication is now a form of theater.
Mime is one of the earliest forms of self-expression. As languages were developing, humans still used their bodies to speak. Mime first became an art form in ancient Greece. Silent actors performed everyday scenes using gestures (动作). These plays often taught a lesson about values. When the Romans got control of Greece, they took the art of mime back to Italy. There they made it their own. Even after the fall of the Roman Empire, mime remained.
In the mid-1500s mime became a form of street performance in Italy. Mime performers wore masks and acted out comedies. Because masks hid their faces, they could make fun of any part of a situation in society. Everyone enjoyed the performance—young and old, rich and poor.
Mime also traveled around Europe. Because their art had no words, there was no language problem. Mime became especially popular in France. French performers created famous mime characters which have shaped today’s mime.
Do you want to try mime? To communicate only through body language; no talking allowed. Watch people’s facial expressions and gestures closely and practice copying them. Create a story to act out—this will be more interesting to your audience. No props (道具)? No worries! You can create anything you need out of thin air. The most important thing is to believe your illusion (假象). If you believe it’s real, your audience will, too

Most runners choose their routes (路线) based on distance or surface. Some pick smooth roads for steady speed, while others choose hills for a challenging workout. But for Lenny Maughan, running is more than fitness — it is also a way to make art.
Maughan, who calls himself a “human Etch A Sketch”, creates GPS drawings by running through the streets of San Francisco. He got the idea from apps that runners use to record their routes. “When I was a kid, I was known for drawing funny pictures of people. I had a real talent for it,” he said. “I forgot about it until a little over 10 years ago.”
Maughan begins by carefully mapping his design on a paper map of San Francisco. To find the route that works, he often needs to map out several different routes. His goal is to create clear images (画像). Once the route is planned, Maughan runs his “masterpiece”, using a GPS app called Strava to track (追踪) his movement. However, Strava only shows the full image after the run is complete. That means Maughan has to follow his planned route very carefully. One wrong turn can badly influence the artwork. “You can’t see the drawing while you run,” Maughan explained. “So when you finish and finally see it come together, it’s a wonderful feeling.”
Over the past ten years, the San Francisco runner has created more than 50 images, from a simple heart to a lively pig. In February 2025, he spent 10 hours running 40 miles to create a snake in honor of the Lunar New Year. But his most famous creation is a line painting of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, completed in 2019. That image covered almost 29 miles and involved a lot of climbing.
“I like to say my legs are my paintbrush and San Francisco is my canvas,” said Maughan. “I love running and I love art. This is a nice way to combine (结合) them both.”

Do you know what Oscar is? When did it start? Maybe you can find the background of the awards in the following passage.
The awards started in 1929. Their full title is “The Academy (学院) of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards”. The Academy is a group of people who have worked in the film industry for many years. They decide who will receive the awards. The awards are often referred to as the “Oscar”. This is a nickname given to the awards by a lady called Margaret Herrick. She was once the director of the Academy and she once said that the little gold statue reminded her of her uncle Oscar!
The Oscar is always an exciting event. Each year, at least one unusual thing happens. When the Italian actor and director Roberto Benigni won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, he danced on stage! When Gwyneth Paltrow, the star of Shakespeare in Love won the Oscar for Best Actress, she could not make her acceptance speech because she was crying so much with happiness!
In 1987, Roberto Benigni won the award for Best Director for a film about the last emperor of China. Since then, Chinese film and actors have started to make an impact at the award. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was a huge success and it won the award for Best Foreign Language film in 2001. It also won several technical awards for its amazing “flying” people. We expect to see more awards for Chinese film in the near future.
It’s time for the Oscar again. Once more, the stars will dress up in their finest and go to Kodak Theater. There, they will find out who has won the awards for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Director. Millions of people watch the awards every year to find out who the winners are. Some people watch it to see the stars crying and laughing as they receive their awards.

David, a policeman, came to a small wooden house about two miles up the mountain to get Cal Richards, an armed and dangerous killer. Through a broken window, he saw an old man watching him closely. When he stepped into the house, he found the old man was holding a gun in his hands.
“Government man, aren’t you?” said the old man.
“Yes,” David replied with a friendly smile. “You must be Pappy Richards.”
“Sure. I’m Cal’s pa. And you’re not going to get him.” The gun pointed at David.
David looked around the house and didn’t see any sign of Cal. “I’ve been sent to do it,” he said. “But I can see he isn’t here today. I guess I’ll have to come again.” Just then he caught sight of a violin hanging on the wall. “Who plays the violin?” he asked.
For a moment there was silence. In fact, Cal’s pa played the violin best in the area, but he did not answer, with his gun still pointing at David.
David crossed the room to the instrument and felt sweat on his forehead, but he took the violin from the wall as calmly as if he were a welcome visitor. He began to play the violin, one tune (曲子) after another. He was playing better than he had ever played in his life.
The old man stood there, attracted. The hatred in his eyes was giving way to a look of wonder. The gun was pointed towards the floor. He began to beat time, tapping one foot on the dirt floor. When the final notes of the tune died away, the old man placed the gun in a corner.
“Well, stranger,” the old man said, “you play the violin excellently. Maybe you’ll stay for dinner and play some more for me.”
After they had eaten, they sat in the spring sunshine outside the house. They talked about violin tunes. Not a word was said about Cal Richards.
About two hours later, David stood up and said, “Sorry! I must be getting back to the town.”
The old man sat, deep in thought. At last, he said, “I like the way you talk, and I like the way you play the violin. I guess you’re a good guy.” He paused as if it were hard to go on. Then, he said in a thick voice, “I... well, I’ll have a talk with Cal. I think he might give himself up tomorrow. You should be at the police station at noon.”
The next day, as the town clock struck twelve, an old man came up the street towards the police station. With him was a young fellow whose appearance told of many days in hiding.

1.Why does the writer want to be a flight surgeon?
A.He likes doing operations on the plane. B.He wants to help the plane work safely.
C.He likes training doctors on the plane. D.He likes flying and also wants to be a doctor.
2.What can the writer do as a flight surgeon?
A.He can fly to space with the astronauts in the spaceship.
B.He can change the concentration of oxygen the pilots breathe in.
C.He can take care of the pilots’ and astronauts’ health.
D.He can drive the spaceship when the astronauts feel seasick.
3.The writer thinks his work is ______.
A.easy but boring B.hard and dangerous
C.important and helpful D.tiring but interesting

Today, red is still important in Chinese culture and society. The National Flag of the People’s Republic of China is red, with five yellow stars on the top left. And now red is a hot color in fashion. More and more people choose to wear traditional wedding dresses at weddings. Some Chinese expressions with red are still used today. For example, the phrase “Mianhong erchi” describes someone who is so angry that his face turns red. We can learn that red is not only for joy and celebration, but also connected to strong feelings.

I was pleased at running away from Long John Silver though I knew he was still somewhere nearby on the island.
As I was trying to find a safer place to hide myself, I heard some men talking close by. It was Silver and Tom.
“I want you with me!” Silver shouted, “when we have the treasure, there’s gold for you too.” “No,” cried Tom, “I told you. I’m not a murderer. You’re guilty, all of you!” Sadly, these were the last words of Tom. It was a gunshot, Silver’s gun.

“No, and Flint is dead. But there are some of Flint’s hands aboard.”
“Not a man…with one…leg?” Ben asked in a tremulous voice, with his pale face and scared eyes.
“You mean Silver? He once worked as a cook on the ship.” I added. “Now, he is also on the island to find Flint’s treasure. He wants to kill us and take over the ship!”
“Aye, that was his name, Long John Silver. The devil (魔鬼) couldn’t hold a lit candle to him,” he said, “I was on Flint’s ship when he buried (埋) the treasure, he and six strong seamen. But, when he returned, he himself alone, and the six all died. How he made it, not a man except him could make out. It was a battle, a murder, and a sudden death—him against six.”
