Most food documentaries in China are about popular restaurants in big cities: However, director Wang Shengzhi chooses a different way—he turns his lens to people’s kitchens in small villages.
Directed by Wang, food documentary Taste of Home was broadcast on Fujian’s South East TV on April 7. Each episode introduces two dishes from local families in two villages. People can follow the food preparation and cooking while learning the stories of the families and the food. At the end of each episode, the locals answer one question, usually about local languages or customs. Wang says that the purpose of this part is to take the viewers on a trip back to their hometown.
Most of the dishes that appear in the documentary use ingredients from the cooks’ own fields or yards. Wang knows that living in the city, people know little about where the food comes from. “In this documentary I want to show all ingredients have their sources, whether they’re the pigs raised by those in the show, or the vegetables grown in their fields,” he says.
Unlike filming restaurant owners or famous cooks who are easier to find, Wang and his team had to work hard to find interviewees for their documentary. ▲ They always said, “I’m not a good cook; why would you like to film me?” Usually, it would take around two days for the family to get comfortable with the film group and start acting naturally in front of the camera. “We must put more effort into our work in order to film the documentary well,” a photographer says.
“The documentary shows a feeling of family,” Wang says. “The theme of it is not about heroes but common people.”

Growing up, we’ve heard a lot of views of how sex (性别) influences interests and jobs. For example, boys do math better than girls, while girls are better at learning languages. We usually think this is because of differences in how boys’ and girls’ brains work. But is it true?
According to past studies, some parts of our brains can be different in size. Scientists used to think these differences might affect how well men and women think and do things. They found this by scanning people’s brains. However, in most of the studies, researchers only scanned less than 100 people. As said in a 2022 study, for such research to be believable, you would need to scan the brains of thousands of people at least.
In 2023, the UK Biobank, a big database (数据库) used for research, scanned the brains of 40,000 people in the UK, providing new finding. It showed differences between men and women in the size of certain brain parts. About one-third of these parts were found to be larger in men, while another third were larger in women.
Also, our brains might change in structure (结构) and size according to our life experiences. For example, a man’s brain area use for math might be larger than a woman’s, simply because he works in a job requiring math skills. So, any brain differences between men and women could be a result, not a cause, of different roles in life and society, noted New Scientist.

People always underestimated (低估) others’ needs for feedback (反馈) and don’t provide it, even when it can improve another person’s performance, according to the research published by the American Psychological Association (APA).
Before, there was other research suggesting that people wouldn’t like to give feedback because they’re afraid that it will hurt the other person’s feelings, or doing so may harm their relationships. The APA research found out there might be another reason why people refuse to give feedback: They don’t fully realize that their suggestions can help improve others’ performances, so they often underestimate others’ needs for such feedback.
To test their thought, the APA researchers did a series of experiments with 1,984 volunteers. In one experiment, volunteers were shown 10 possible awkward (令人难堪的) situations at work, where they could give or receive useful feedback. In another experiment, volunteers were asked to think of a situation where they had the chance to give or receive useful feedback. In the final experiment, volunteers worked in pairs—one practises a speech for a competition and the other listens and provides feedback.
During these three experiments, those who should give feedback always underestimated receivers’ needs for it. The more important the feedback was, the more often volunteers underestimated the other’s needs for feedback and the less likely they wanted to offer it. The gap (差距) was smaller in more daily situations, such as when the other person had food on their faces.
The researchers were surprised to find that simply asking “If you were this person, would you want feedback?” helped volunteers understand the value of feedback to the other person and helped close the giver-receiver gap.
“Feedback is a key to personal growth and improvement.” said Francesca Gino, the leader of the research. “The next time you hear someone mispronounce a word, or see a dirty mark on their shirt, point it out to them—they probably want feedback more than you think.”
( )12.According to other research before, people don’t give feedback because ________.

The conservators(文物修复员)at the Smithsonian American Art Museum are called "art doctors". They use scientific tools to repair the museum's artworks and often wear white lab(实验室)coats. However, unlike other doctors, their patients never shout "ouch".
"We X-ray art to see how it's made and do preventative (预防性的)protection," said Amber Kerr, the head of conservation.
In the spirit of sharing, the museum invites visitors to watch the conservators repair artworks from their glass-walled labs on the third floor.
On a recent afternoon, Leah Bright, an object conservator, was caring for two art pieces at her workstation. A piece of a large sculpture was under a microscope (显微镜). When she found anything that was broken, she needed to fix it. She pointed out holes in a small part of the aluminum foil(铝箔) that covered the artwork. "Here is the damage(损坏). We will record it and try to stop it,"she said.
The other item was a stone sculpture of Venus with two broken legs. The museum workers noticed the sculpture shaking back-and--forth at the joints(关节)."It was not safe,"
Bright said. To stop the swing, the conservators used a special filler.
1. Why are the conservators at the museum called "art doctors"?
___________________________________________________________________________________
2. What quality do you think the conservators at the museum should have?

3. Would you like to be a conservator? Why or why not?
