The Buon Don Elephant Festival is normally held every two years. Many tourists travel to Vietnam to attend. The elephants do all kinds of activities. They play soccer, swim and parade (游行) through town. There is a huge food buffet for the elephants. The highlight of the festival is the elephant race on the final two days.
The festival drew hundreds of cheering viewers. Animal rights activists (活动家) showed up, too. The activists say the elephants shouldn't be forced to work long hours under the hot sun. They should not be beaten with sticks during the race.
"That is one of the highest levels of animal cruelty," said Dionne Slagter. She works with Animals Asia, a group that wants to protect the elephants and other animals. The Buon Don Elephant Festival is normally held every two years. Many tourists travel to Vietnam to attend. The elephants do all kinds of activities.
