When I was six years old, my mom told me that I could find anyone's number in the phone book. I used to look through the phone book for hours trying to find Michael Jordan's phone number. When I couldn't find it, I just dialed seven numbers. When someone answered, I'd ask, “Is that Michael Jordan?” Obviously, I always had the wrong number.
A year later I started playing basketball at my local recreation center. It was very big. I never thought in my wildest dreams that a basketball court could be inside a building. The recreation center had a special smell in it, sort of like hot rubber. I guessed it was from the shoes hitting the floor so fast and hard. The atmosphere on the court was carefree. Our biggest excitement of the day was when we actually made a shot. We celebrated wins over ice cream at a fast food restaurant.
I got good at it, and my confidence grew. I played it all the time until the sixth grade. As soon as junior high school came, I stopped playing basketball and focused on school. When senior high school started, I tried out for the school team and made it. We worked hard. Every week we did 300 push-ups and 300 sit-ups on our own. Our coach encouraged the sit-ups to keep stomach power, because it gave us so much control when we were playing basketball. If we didn't want to do the sit-ups and push-ups, we could practice dribbling and shooting more.
It's just us, the ball, the court and the net. But don't take my word for it. See for yourself. After all, I'm just one kid playing the game.

A. That it was very near to his home.
B. That there was a basketball court inside the building.
C. That there was a special smell in it.

26. Why did the author's coach encourage them to do sit-ups?
A. it is the basic preparation to play basketball. B. it is more useful than dribbling and shooting.
C. it is the only way to make people stronger. D. it helps keep stomach power.
27. What's the author's purpose in writing this passage?

In Europe people hold the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right throughout the meal, a system that is generally agreed to be more efficient than the American zigzag method. Americans hold both the fork and the knife in their right hands throughout the meal, so they continually change their forks to the left hand when they have to cut their meat. It seems to be funny for the Europeans to see Americans busy changing their dinner sets, making a lot of noises.
A few explanations for this American style are as follows:
1. Americans are practical and efficient. Since most of us are right-handed, it is reasonable to keep our working tools at all times in the right hand that can use them most efficiently.
2. Americans, the master of the New World, are rebels. They use the zigzag method to break the rules in the Old World and in this way they are thumbing their nose at Mother England—Americans are a restless kind. They do not like to sit in one spot for very long when dining.
3. Forced to do so, they respond by “playing” with the silver. Whatever the reason for the practice, it is now certainly as American as apple pie. Europeans recognize this and are quick to attack it as evidence of American innocence of form. Arguments against the zigzag method rest not only on grounds of efficiency but also on those of tradition. In Old World Dining, the knife is held in the right hand continually because it can serve as an instant defense against the uninvited intruders. However, such alertness is out of place in the New World, as every American believes that this is the home of the brave. Americans juggle their silverware, perhaps, to show that they are not afraid and that one of them holding a fork is worth any number of them holding blades.
28. Americans use to hold their fork to pick up the salad.
A. the right hand B. the left hand C. both hands D. either of the two hands
29. Why do Americans use a different cutting method from that in the Old World?
A. To show their independence of Mother England.
B. To show their disrespect to Mother England.
C. To add a new tradition to those in Mother England.
D. To show off their creativeness to Mother England.
30. What does the underlined word “juggle” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A. hold B. pick up C. play with D. lay down
31. Which of the following statements is Not true?
A. European people usually hold the fork in the left hands.
B. The zigzag eating method is related to American characteristics.
C. The zigzag eating method has become an American feature.
D. European people will use the American method because of its efficiency.

In the early 1970s American women gave birth, on average, to 2.12 children each. By 2018 that number had fallen to 1.73. Jordan Nickerson and David Solomon, professors at MIT, think they have found an interesting factor which helps explain this change: America’s increasingly protective child car-seat laws.
Their study examines the effect that car-seat policies may have had on American birth rates. During the 1980s, only the children aged under three had to be secured in child-safety seats. But since then, the requirements have been slowly increased. Today, most places in America make children sit in safety seats until their eighth birthdays. That concern for youngsters’ safety has had the unexpected consequence of fewer three-child families.
In drawing this conclusion they have connected population data with changes in state laws on safety seats. They discovered that stricter laws had no noticeable effects on the rates of births of first and second children, but with a drop, on average, of 0.73 percentage point s in the number of women giving birth to a third while the first two were young enough to need safety seats.
The professors also made two other related observations. The reduction they saw was limited to families that did actually have access to a car. And space in the vehicle is the important factor. In pre-safety-seat days, putting three young children into the back of a family car was a perfectly practical advice. Most such cars, though, can comfortably accommodate only two safety seats. So, as the child car-seat laws change, a family must wait longer time for a third child to fit in the car. Sometimes, that wait will mean no third child is ever born.
Unless, of course, the family concerned buys a bigger car. But average families have the obvious reasons not to do so ——big cars cost more, and are more costly to run. Interestingly, Dr Nickerson and Dr Solomon found that the third-child deterrent(遏制作用) appears even stronger among wealthier families. As they observe, “large cars may reflect their real status and taste, which may make people unwilling to switch even when they can afford to.”
32. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Changes in American car-seat laws.
B. Ways to ensure children's safety in cars.
C. Influence of car-seat laws on American birthrate.
D. The connection between cars and American birthrate.
33 . What contributes to fewer three-child families according to Paragraph 4?
A. The quality of child safety seats. B. The family's economic status.
C. The space of the family car. D. The desire to have a third child.
34. What can we learn about big cars from the last paragraph?
A. They are affordable to most families. B. They are more fuel-efficient.
C. They are more popular among richer families. D. They are a symbol of wealth.
35. How did the two professors reach the conclusion of their study?
A. By doing experiments. B. By comparing data.
C. By making surveys. D. By holding interviews.

For the past 4,000 years of history since the Spring Festival began, the lifestyles of Chinese people have changed. 36 Here are two examples of how locals celebrate it.
Beijing: homes and events
In Beijing, people take the Spring Festival very seriously. Before it, people decorate their homes inside and out. They put door gods on their gates, put couplets on door frames and stick paper cut-outs on the windows. The paper cut-outs show many scenes involving animals and plants, such as plum blossoms and lions with balls. Red lanterns are hung in the rooms. 37
It is common for people in Beijing to go to the temple fairs during the Spring Festival. Temple fairs began when groups of vendors did business near temples and when many pilgrims(香客) came to worship the gods during traditional festivals. 38 At the fairs, you can find vendors selling food and handicrafts, performers doing dragon and lion dances and vendors organizing games to play.
Shaanxi: folk performances
In Shaanxi Province, yangge is the most popular folk performance during the Spring Festival. 39 It has its origins in planting rice and farming in the countryside in the north of China, hoping for a good harvest for the year.
Almost every village in northern Shaanxi Province has a yangge group. On the lunar New Year’s Day, after eating dumplings, the yangge group starts to pay New Year calls from house to house. The leading performer has to be good at singing traditional songs and making up new songs about different occasions. 40 The performance is simple and lively, showing the honest, happy personalities of the local people.
A. It is only performed on stage.
B. And they have now turned into a regular event.
C. It includes music, dance and handkerchief skills.
D. When he sings, the others repeat his last sentence.
E. The dance is always the biggest attraction to local people.
F. And New Year pictures and the character Fu are put on the walls.
G. But the importance of this traditional festival in our lives has not faded.

24. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The days of the author playing basketball at a recreation center.

C. The days before the author went to senior high school.
D. The author's happy childhood with his teammates.

A. That it was very near to his home.
B. That there was a basketball court inside the building.
C. That there was a special smell in it.
D. That there was a fast food restaurant in it.
26. Why did the author's coach encourage them to do sit-ups?
A. it is the basic preparation to play basketball. B. it is more useful than dribbling and shooting.
C. it is the only way to make people stronger. D. it helps keep stomach power.
27. What's the author's purpose in writing this passage?
A. To introduce some skills in playing basketball.
B. To tell us about his dream of becoming a basketball star.
C. To introduce his own experience of playing basketball.
D. To tell us how to balance playing basketball and studying.
C
D
