I was on the way to California to follow my dream. When I reached downtown El Paso, I met a bum on the street corner. He stopped me and asked me if I was running away from home. I told him, “Not exactly, sir,” because my father had given me a ride to the train station and said, “It is important to follow your dream, son.” After talking for a few minutes, the friendly bum told me to follow him. He took me to a public library. The bum first took me to a table and asked me to sit down and wait for a moment. A few moments later, he returned with some old books and sat beside me. Then he said, “There are two things that I want to teach you, young man, and they are these: Number one is to never judge a book by its cover, for a cover can cheat you.” He continued. “You think I’m a bum, don’t you, young man?” I said, “Well, uh, yes, sir.” “Well. young man. I’ve got a little surprise for you. I am one of the richest men in the world. But I realized there were certain things I had not yet experienced in life. So for the past year, I have been going from city to city living as a bum. So, you see, don’t ever judge a book by its cover.” “Number two is to learn how to read, my boy. There is only one thing that people can’t take away from you, and that is your wisdom.” At that moment, he showed me the old books. The bum then took me back to the street where we first met. He asked me never to forget what he taught me when we left each other. 1. The word “bum” in the second paragraph means a person who is ____ . It’s in a lot of things we use every day, from clothes to pens, and bottles to toys. But there’s a problem. Most plastic is not biodegradable (可生物降解的), and a lot of it ends up in the sea. How big is the problem? There are billions of bits of plastic in the world’s sea! Every ocean and every beach has plastic, from large objects to small pieces called microplastics. Tons of plastic go into the sea every year. Increasing like this, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the sea! How does plastic harm sea animals? Fish, sea turtles, and birds think plastic is food, and they eat it. The plastic stays in their stomachs. Dead seabirds are found with stomachs full of plastic. Whales, dolphins, and seals are caught by plastic bags or fishing nets. It’s said that millions of ocean animals die each year because of plastic rubbish in the sea around the world. What can we do? Many people and organizations around the world are taking action. In some countries, plastic bags aren’t allowed to use. Scientists are developing new biodegradable plastic. Many communities are trying to use less plastic and recycle more. Kids are playing their part, such as working to make their schools “zero plastic”. Plastic pollution is becoming more and more serious, so it’s necessary for us to produce, buy and use fewer plastic products. Above all, one person can’t solve it alone, but together we will make a difference. 1. What will happen to the world’s oceans by 2050 according to the passage? A. Tons of plastic will enter the ocean. B. There will be more plastic than fish. C. There will be billions of bits of plastic. D. Every ocean and beach will have plastic. 2. Many fish, sea turtles, and birds die because ____ according to the passage. Every year, millions of birds fly thousands of kilometers between their home areas and winter places. For example, Arctic terns (北极燕鸥) travel from the Arctic to Antarctica and back — a round trip of about 71,000 kilometers! But why do birds take such long and dangerous journeys? The main reasons are food and weather. In cold seasons, food becomes difficult to find, and birds move to warmer places where they can find enough insects or plants to survive. Scientists have studied how birds travel for a long time. In the 1800s, a German scientist named Johannes Thienemann used small metal rings to record where birds go. Today, scientists use GPS to watch birds and learn about their movements. They found that birds use different ways to find their directions, like looking at the sun and stars, feeling the Earth’s magnetic field (磁场), and remembering mountains, rivers, and coastlines to help them know their ways. Migration is arduous. Birds face many dangers, such as storms, enemies, and tall buildings. To prepare for the trip, they eat more food to store energy as fat. Some birds fly non-stop for days. During the journey, birds fly in groups to save energy by following the leader. Bird migration is important to ecosystems. Birds control insect numbers and spread plant seeds. For example, some birds help flowers grow by carrying flower powder (花粉). However, climate change and home loss are making migration harder. Scientists warn that some birds may change their ways or even disappear if we don’t protect their rest areas. By building bird-friendly cities and reducing light pollution, humans can help these amazing travelers. 1. What are the main reasons for bird migration? A. To save food and energy during trips. B. To see rivers and coastlines. C. To find food and better weather. D. To hide from enemies and storms. 2. How does the writer tell how birds find directions in Paragraph 2? A. By comparing different bird species. B. By describing tools birds use to find directions. C. By listing numbers in a scientist’s experiment. D. By discussing the influence of climate change. 3. What does the underlined word “arduous” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Boring. B. Exciting. C. Hopeless. D. Difficult. 4. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Protecting birds’ rest areas can help them survive migration. B. Human activities have reduced migration challenges. C. Climate change brings a good influence to bird migration. D. Protecting the environment makes migration travels longer. 5. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this text? A. To discuss the history of scientific tools. B. To encourage people to feed birds in cities. C. To explain a natural event and its importance. D. To describe how to build bird-friendly gardens. 根据文章第1段“But why do birds take such long and dangerous journeys? The main reasons are food and weather. In cold seasons, food becomes difficult to find, and birds move to warmer places where they can find enough insects or plants to survive.(但是为什么鸟类要进行如此漫长而危险的旅程呢? 根据文章第2段“They found that birds use different ways to find their directions, like looking at the sun and stars, feeling the Earth’s magnetic field (磁场), and remembering mountains, rivers, and coastlines to help them know their ways. (他们发现,鸟类用不同的方式来寻找方向,比如看太阳和星星,感受地球的磁场,记住山脉、河流和海岸线,以帮助它们了解自己的方式。)”可知,作者通过描述鸟类使用的工具和方法来说明它们如何辨别方向。故选B。 3. 题干意思:第3段中带下划线的“arduous”一词是什么意思?根据文章第3段“Birds face many dangers, such as storms, enemies, and tall buildings. To prepare for the trip, they eat more food to store energy as fat. Some birds fly non-stop for days.(鸟类面临许多危险,如风暴、敌人和高楼大厦。 根据文章最后一段“Scientists warn that some birds may change their ways or even disappear if we don’t protect their rest areas. By building bird-friendly cities and reducing light pollution, humans can help these amazing travelers.(科学家警告说,如果我们不保护它们的休息区,一些鸟类可能会改变它们的生活方式,甚至消失。通过建设鸟类友好型城市和减少光污染,人类可以帮助这些了不起的旅行者。)”可知,保护鸟类的休息区有助于它们完成迁徙。故选A。 5. 根据第1段“Bird migration (迁徙) is one of nature’s most amazing events. Every year, millions of birds fly thousands of kilometers between their home areas and winter places.(鸟类迁徙是大自然中最令人惊叹的事件之一。每年,数以百万计的鸟类在它们的家园和冬季之间飞行数千公里。)”结合全文可知,本文主要介绍了鸟类迁徙的原因、方式、挑战及其生态意义。故推知作者的写作目的是解释这一自然现象及其重要性,故选C。 D This is a tale of a lonely old woman. She lived in the white North. There, the night is long in winter and the day is long in summer. The old woman lived alone in a small village. The villagers took good care of her, but she was still unhappy. She wanted a child of her own. One winter day, she walked out and saw a small white animal on the ice. It was a baby bear. The bear looked small and felt very cold. The old woman spoke softly to the bear, “Poor little thing. Come with me.” Then she carried him home. Inside her house, the old woman held the bear close until he was warm. She touched him gently and sang to him softly. He felt comfortable in her arms. From that day, when the old woman ate, she fed the little bear from her hand. When she slept, the bear slept beside her. They were a family now. The village children loved the bear too. They played together. Time passed quickly and the bear grew big and strong. One day, some villagers said to him, “Little Bear, go hunting with us. We’ll teach you how to hunt.” The bear followed them. Soon the bear became a better hunter than the villagers. When the weather was bad, everyone stayed indoors. Then the bear went out into the snow and brought home enough food for the whole village. The old woman felt proud of him. One day, some villagers said to the old woman, “The bear has grown big and strong enough. He is a good hunter now. You’d better let him go back to the wild.” In the following days, the old woman was quiet, thinking. She thought aloud, “The bear belongs to the wild. I should let him go.” Finally, she said to the bear, “It’s time for you to leave. Be safe. Be free.” She put her arms around his neck. Her tears ran into his fur. She was heartbroken. The bear walked slowly away from her and looked back again and again. Then he disappeared. When darkness fell, the old woman still stood there. Once more, she was alone. A long time passed. The winter came again. One day, the old woman stood at the same place for a long time. The wind blew snow around her face. Suddenly, the white bear appeared and ran to her. I should let him go.”(她自言自语道:‘熊属于野外。 根据第10段中划线句子“The bear walked slowly away from her and looked back again and again.(熊慢慢地离开她,一次又一次地回头看。)” 根据第4段“Inside her house, the old woman held the bear close until he was warm.(在她的屋子里,老妇人把小熊紧紧抱在怀里,直到它暖和起来。)” 根据第5段“The bear followed them. Soon the bear became a better hunter than the villagers.(熊跟着他们去了。 根据第8段“She thought aloud, “The bear belongs to the wild. I should let him go.”(她自言自语道:‘熊属于野外。 根据倒数第二段“Suddenly, the white bear appeared and ran to her.(突然,那只白熊出现了,向她跑来。)” 正确顺序为:b→c→d→a。 In China, each year there is about 150 million tons of city waste according to a report. They had better education, so they could read about the world outside of their own countries. They mostly couldn’t have the money for real travel, but they could dream about travel. Surely the fact that people wanted to see the world is one of the reasons why French writer Jules Verne’s great science fiction Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (海底两万里) (1870) was such a success. The story begins when a sea monster that looks like a whale sinks (击沉) an American boat. The “monster” is causing chaos and spreading fear among sailors and the public. Passengers are too afraid to cross the Atlantic. They want to kill this mysterious monster because it is endangering human life. The great powers meet in New York and decide to send a ship to deal with the monster. The crew (船员) include two sailors, Ned Land, Professor Aronnax and his servant, Conseil. The ship is the Abraham Lincoln under Captain Farragut, a very good sailor. After chasing at sea for three months, they are almost giving up. Captain Farragut is the only person who still believes in the monster and asks for another three days. It is almost dark at the end of the second day. Ned Land is standing on the deck and shouting, “There it is! There it is!” Everybody rushes to him because he is pointing to the monster. They chase the monster all day, travelling four hundred kilometers, but it does not tire. That night, the ship quietly floats closer and closer, until at last Ned Land can throw his harpoon. It hits the monster, but the ship sinks. All the crew are thrown into the sea As we follow their journey, we are left wondering what lies ahead. Will they kill the monster? What secrets will they uncover? The story is full of suspense and excitement, making it a perfect read for students in Grade Nine. 1. Never Judge a Book by Its Cover C. An important Lesson D. Wisdom is Important B Plastic is useful. A. they eat plenty of plastic B. they don’t have food to eat C. they are caught by fishermen D. they are caught by plastic bags 3. In Paragraph 5, the writer advises us to ____ . A. make the problem more serious B. solve the problem on our own C. buy more plastic products alone D. work together to solve the problem 4. In which part of the newspaper can we read the text? A. Travel. B. Science. C. History. D. Sport. 5. How is the text organized? (①= Paragraph 1, ②= Paragraph 2, …) A. ①/②③④⑤ B. ①/②③④/⑤ C. ①/②③/④/⑤ D. ①②③④/⑤W C Bird migration (迁徙) is one of nature’s most amazing events. D This is a tale of a lonely old woman.
