Matt Holland, a sailing instructor in Guernsey, has taken on an enhanced version of the 30 Bays in 30 Days challenge, by completing the event within 24 hours. He took on the feat (英勇事迹) which has broken his fund-raising target for Les Bourgs Hospice, a hospital for people who are dying.
Matt Holland’s mum, Sam Holland, was cared for by the team at Les Bourgs Hospice before her death earlier this year. “I want to do something to give back to the Les Bourgs Hospice. It holds a place close to my heart because of the role they held in caring for my mum during her final months, battling with Motor Neurone Disease (MND),” he said. “They greatly improved her quality of life and without them, we would not have had the time as a family we so very needed.”
Matt Holland said he was in disbelief that he had completed the challenge, reaching more than 30 miles during his run. “When I start at the bathing pools, it is hard to imagine what the challenge will be like. As I get onto that first run, I feel okay, and I think I could do this for the next eight, nine, or ten hours,” he remembered.
He said it was amazing to experience the sense of community during the challenge which included people showing up at different bays to join him, even his mum’s old friends. “One of the first things my mind turned to on that first run was what my mum would say and I decided she’d be going, ‘you’re absolutely crazy,’” he added.
Matt Holland ended his challenge at Fermain, a special place for his family. He finished the journey just before 21:00 BST on Monday which was a bit slower than he would have liked. Tired but proud, he would take some time to rest before deciding on his next adventure.

C It played an important role in improving Matt’s mother’s last days.
D. It regularly organizes fund-raising challenges with community support.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Matt Holland?
A. Honest. B. Humorous. C. Self-centered. D. Strong-minded.

Today’s journalists face modern challenges. Online media platforms are springing up. And the lowly newspaper — and its reporters — are fighting money, tech, and distrust issues. Journalism students and teachers must emphasize new skills to keep their profession alive.
A trustworthy press helps inform people and monitor all levels of government. That is essential to a nation. Yet this useful establishment is growing increasingly unpopular. According to the University of North Carolina (UNC), newsroom jobs across the country are fewer than half what they were 10 years ago. And on many college campuses, the news about the news is dismal too.
Take the Syracuse, New York, student-run newspaper The Daily Orange: It isn’t daily anymore. The paper prints just three times each week. Next year, The Diamondback of the University of Maryland will be online only. Half the newspapers that still exist on paper say they don’t print as many copies. And UNC’s The Daily Tar Heel has cut staff pay and rented cheaper offices to make its budget.
Considering the problems in journalism, it’s surprising that the enrollment (注册人数) in college journalism programs is up. The Daily Orange managing editor Catherine Leffert calls the layoffs and cutbacks disheartening. “But what keeps me wanting to be a journalist is seeing the effect that The Daily Orange has,” he says.
But journalism educators wonder, “Are we preparing young people for a dying industry?” Years ago, journalism graduates took low-level reporter jobs at newspapers or television stations. That still happens. But today’s jobs more often involve digital editing, social media production, and video streaming. Some universities are taking action. The University of Florida offers a sports media program. Several schools highlight statistics-driven data journalism.
The news isn’t all bad. Journalism professor Kathleen Culver says, “When I look at 18-and 20-year-olds in journalism and see what they want to do, I’m optimistic.” Maddy Arrowood is the student editor of The Daily Tar Heel. She says her experience makes her more interested in a journalism career, not less. Her optimism “comes from knowing that people still need news. They still need information.”
8. What does the underlined word “dismal” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Depressing. B. Funny. C. Inspiring. D. Useless.
9. How do some universities respond to today’s journalism?
A. They decide to cut down on student enrollment.
B. They provide students with specialized programs.
C. They introduce students to low-level reporter jobs.
D. They advise students to run their own newspapers.
10. Why is Maddy Arrowood mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To indicate the popularity of The Daily Tar Heel.
B. To confirm people’s eagerness for the latest news.
C. To show people’s negative attitudes to journalism.
D. To prove the bright future of a career in journalism.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. What does journalism mean to you? B. Are journalists still influential today?
C. Does journalism have a future? D. What is a journalist’s job now?
D
Under the large thick areas of ice in Antarctica, there are hundreds of hidden lakes that play an important role in shaping Antarctica’s cold environment. These lakes affect how glaciers (冰川) move, which in turn can affect global sea levels.
Scientists have recently discovered 85 new subglacial (冰川下的) lakes using some information from the European Space Agency’s CryoSat satellite, which has been observing the area for over ten years. This discovery increases the total number of known active subglacial lakes in Antarctica to 231.
The study, published in Nature Communications, is important because these lakes drain (排水) and refill repeatedly, which makes it difficult to observe what happens deep under the ice.
Sally Wilson, a researcher from the University of Leeds, explained that the challenge is that these lakes are under hundreds of meters of ice. “It is hard to observe the process of filling and draining, as it can take months or years. Before this study, only 36 complete cycles of filling and draining had been observed. Now, we have observed 12 more complete fill-drain events, bringing the total to 48,” she said.
Satellites have been important in this discovery. CryoSat has been observing the thickness of polar ice and measuring changes in ice sheet heights over Greenland and Antarctica for over ten years. By checking the information from CryoSat, scientists could discern changes in the ice surface caused by the filling and draining of these subglacial lakes.
Understanding these changes brings new hope for studying sea level rise. Now, models used to study sea level rise do not include the effects of subglacial lakes. This new research will help improve these models by offering more information on how water moves under Antarctica’s ice. “By mapping where and when these lakes are active, we can have a better understanding of future sea level rise in advance,” said Sally.
12. What does the author point out in the first paragraph?
A. Antarctica’s thick ice areas are becoming smaller. B. Global warming puts subglacial lakes in danger.
C. Subglacial lakes affect Antarctica’s environment. D. Rising sea levels strike the developing countries.
13. What does the author want to do in paragraph 4?
A. Come up with new ideas about subglacial lakes.
B. Describe the possible problems subglacial lakes bring.
C. Raise a reasonable doubt about the appearance of subglacial lakes.
D. Present a further explanation for the trouble of observing subglacial lakes.
14. What can we infer from the passage about the models studying sea level rise?
A. They have been widely used to predict global climate change.
B. They will be more accurate with the new research on subglacial lakes.
C. They already include all the factors that influence sea level rise.
D. They were developed by researchers from the University of Leeds.
15. What does Sally want to stress in the last paragraph?
A. The role of Antarctica’s ice. B. The development of sea levels.
C The disadvantages of these models. D. The value of the study’s findings.
Like it or love it, social media is a major part of life. Teens spend more than half of their waking hours online. They use some of that time to post pictures and create profiles on social media accounts. ____16____
Clicking on a thumbs-up or a heart icon is an easy way to stay in touch. ____17____ Some social media sites use those likes to determine how many people eventually see a post. One with many likes is more likely to be seen-and to get even more likes.
What’s more, viewing posts with a lot of likes activates the reward system in our brain. ____18____ For example, posts related to alcohol may encourage teens to drink. That means that what you like online has the power to influence not just what others like, but even what they do.
____19____ And not always in a good way. For example, in one 2011 study, teens doing a driving task in a lab took more risks when their friends were around. Researchers also looked at the teens’ brains during this task. They saw activity in a part of the brain that’s involved in rewards, which suggests the teens were changing their behavior to try to get social approval.
Joining social media can give people a sense of being in the know. But posts may exaggerate (夸大) how well our friends and others are feeling, making them appear much happier than we are. ____20____
A. It can also lower the viewer’s self-control.
B. A popular post doesn’t necessarily mean it is a quality post.
C. It’s no surprise: Feedback from peers affects how teens behave.
D. Their brains respond to those likes by turning on the reward center.
E. And that can, inappropriately, make us feel less successful than them.
F But those “likes” can have power that goes beyond a simple connection.
G. Most of what they do is read and respond to posts by friends and family.

I like running, and for me, success was winning every race I participated in. My classmates called me“Mr. Champion(冠军)”. One day, there was a sports meeting at my school. Well-prepared for the running competition, I took part in all the races: the 400m, 200m, and 100m. A large number of people gathered to watch. The crowd was eager to see the running races because they were the most exciting events. When the 400m race started, all the boys ran fast. Unsurprisingly, I finished first and received a big round of applause(掌声). Although it was tiring, I felt proud and was on top of the world.
In the 200m race, I ran at full speed and finished first once again. The crowd gave me thunderous applause. I jumped all over the place and even didn’t think it was necessary to shake hands with other racers.
Then came the 100m race. Discouraged by the previous races, most boys gave up except one: a boy named Matt, who looked a little clumsy(笨拙的) but was a determined racer. The judge came to Matt and explained the situation, asking if he would like to give up too. Wild with joy, I thought I would win the championship without effort. However, to everyone’s surprise, Matt decided to finish the race. I sniffed(嗤之以鼻), “It’s a waste of time. I’m sure he doesn’t even know where the finish line is.”
The race between the two of us began. On hearing the starting gun, both Matt and I ran toward the finish line. Soon I sped up and left Matt behind. Just 30 meters before reaching the finish line, I was expecting to receive applause for the third time when I suffered a leg spasm(抽筋).

A 9. B 10. D 11. C

C. The disadvantages of these models. D. The value of the study’s findings.
C 13. D 14. B 15. D

F. But those “likes” can have power that goes beyond a simple connection.
G. Most of what they do is read and respond to posts by friends and family.

故填However。
It is advisable to do sth.
故填are brought。
故填which。
故填what。
固定搭配be committed to doing sth.

Dear David,
I’m more than happy to share my thoughts on the “at least 2 hours of daily physical activity” initiative.
Personally, I fully support it. As senior high students, we’re often buried in textbooks, so regular exercise helps relieve our study pressure effectively. It also strengthens our bodies, making us more energetic in class. Additionally, team sports like basketball teach us cooperation.
My suggestion is to add more fun activities like frisbee or badminton. It would also be better to arrange fixed time to avoid conflicting with our lessons.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

I fell hard to the ground. I tried to stand up, but there was a sharp pain in my leg. My dream of winning for the third time was over. The crowd’s cheers changed into shocked gasps. I felt my face burn with shame and frustration. Just moments ago, I was about to win; now I was lying helpless on the track, unable to move. To my surprise, Matt didn’t rush past. Instead, he stopped beside me with concern. “Are you okay? Let me help you.” He said as he reached out his hand.
With his help, I slowly stood up. Leaning on his shoulder, I hopped painfully toward the finish line. My heart was filled with a mixture of gratitude and regret. The audience began to clap—not for a winner, but for two boys who supported each other and crossed the finish line together. That day, I realized that the heart of a true champion doesn’t lie in winning, but in kindness and sportsmanship.
