Evans Wadongo was from a village of Africa. He had to do homework by the light of a kerosene lamp (煤油灯). Evans’ eyes hurt and this made studying difficult. It was common in his village. Many children left school for this reason, so they remained poor for the rest of their lives.
Although studying was difficult, Evans was an excellent student and went to a university. He continued to worry about the kerosene lamp. By this time, he realized it was not just bad for school children but for the whole family. First, it can cause illnesses such as coughs. Also, the light can hurt people’s eyes. Besides, it can lead to fires. Lastly, kerosene is expensive, so families have less money for food. It was difficult to come up with a different kind of lamp that was cheap and good for the environment. Yet, Evans did not give up.
One day, he had an idea. He could use a small solar (太阳能的) light. Sunlight is free and solar power is good for the environment. Evans built his first solar lamp, and it worked. He began to build more lamps and sent them to local families. An organization heard about this and provided money for him to build more solar lamps.
Each lamp only cost $20. However, this was a lot of money to many villagers, who only made around $4 a week, so Evans made sure he kept the cost down. First, Evans used recycled materials. Next, volunteers built the lamps. Finally, people from many countries gave away money to his team, so the lamps were usually free.
Thousands of people had safe light. Julia, a mother of three, said, “Thanks to Evans, my children have light to read, and I have my own light to cook.” The solar lamps made a big difference.

During their busy lives, people do not pay much attention to the expiry dates (有效期) on the food in their fridges. As a result, a lot of food is forgotten about and wasted. However, according to a recent research, being aware of (意识到) what you throw away can help you waste less.
The researchers measured (计量) food waste from 154 families across the UK. Half of these families in the research were asked to list the fruits and vegetables they had bought and their expiry dates. The families stuck the list on the fridge door and received a text message every day telling them to check it. The other half did not have to make a list and did not receive text messages. Over a six-week period, all the families were asked to measure their food waste at the end of each week.
The researchers were surprised to find that making lists and getting texts made little difference to how much food was wasted. However each family in the research wasted less food—about 0.1 kilo a week.
The researchers carried on the research for six months, and found that all the families continued to waste less food. This shows that just measuring food waste encourages people to pay closer attention to it and throw less away.
43. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to (指的是)?
A. The research. B. The list. C. The door. D. The message.
44. What is introduced in paragraph 3 about the six-week research?

45. Which of the following is the best title (标题) for the text?
A. Measure Food Waste to Stop It B. Pay Attention to What You Buy
C. Check the Food Before Storing It D. Give Thought to Your Busy Life

This is interesting to me because I’ve noticed the change in Chinese products (产品) over time in Pakistan.
It’s true that during the 1990s, Chinese products were thought of as something of low quality (质量). They were bought by the poor and not expected to last long. I remember they were cheap toys, etc.
Last month, I was in the market to buy some sheep. While talking with the sheep keeper, I noticed something like a radio around his neck. I asked him what it was. He showed it to me and I was surprised to see that it was a cool music player. There was also a cell casing (电池外壳) on the back. I asked him where he got this and why. His reply was:
“I get bored when I take my sheep out to the mountains for feeding. So I got this from the local shop that sells Chinese products. I can keep it charged (充电) using the sun only and have a few cheap cells to keep it going when needed. I can listen to the radio, some songs on the player. This helps me pass the time when I have to feed my sheep.”
But why this player? Why not some others?
“It’s made in China and cheap enough for me to afford. Another reason is that I couldn’t find anything else that met my needs like this one.”
It’s clear that “made in China” really doesn’t mean what it used to.
46. The sheep keeper used the music player to ________.
A. practice singing B. get more business
C. help his sheep eat more D. kill time in the mountains
47. Where did the sheep keeper get the music player?
A. From the writer. B. From a local shop.
C. From a Chinese friend. D. From a Chinese market.
48. In the sheep keeper’s opinion, the music player ________.
A. was popular with the local people B. could be better
C. looked like a radio D. was cheap and useful
49. The writer writes the passage mainly to ________.
A. tell a story of a Pakistani farmer B. introduce Chinese products in Pakistan
C. explain the great change in Chinese products D. show the friendship between China and Pakistan

During the Jin Dynasty (265-420), here was a child named Che Yin. He was intelligent and loved reading. He grew up in a poor family and couldn’t afford lamp oil to study at night.
One night, he saw fireflies (萤火虫) outside his house and came up with an idea. He caught some fireflies in a cloth bag and hung the bag up as a lamp. It was said that he spent all of his summer nights reading like this.
Another child named Sun Kang who lived during the same period (时期) also loved reading. One night during winter, Sun used up all of his lamp oil and couldn’t study at night. When he suddenly woke up at midnight, he saw the snow reflecting the moonlight outside his house. His first thought was “Oh, I can use the reflected light to read!” He took out his books and read, even though he was freezing cold.
Both of the two kids later became successful government officials. People were touched by their hardworking spirit and their stories inspired the Chinese idiom “nangyingyingxue (囊萤映雪)”, or “to read by the light of bagged fireflies or the reflected light of snow”.
In the past, people had a harder time studying than we do now. They had to copy books by hand because books were valuable back then. For poor families, paper and writing brushes were too expensive to afford. Students even had to travel over mountains and rivers in order to find a good teacher. However, these difficult situations did not stop young minds from pursuing (追求) knowledge.

However, each family in the research wasted less food—about 0.1 kilo a week.
The researchers carried on the research for six months, and found that all the families continued to waste less food. This shows that just measuring food waste encourages people to pay closer attention to it and throw less away.

A. The research. B. The list. C. The door. D. The message.
