Every evening after school, the old library of West Middle School closes at 6 p. m. But last month, a strange thing happened. Mrs. Gray, the librarian, found a pile of open books on the second floor every morning. The books were always about ancient mysteries— like Stonehenge and the pyramids.
Mrs. Gray checked the library’s security cameras, but the camera on the second floor had stopped working. She asked Leo, a ninth-grader who loved solving puzzles, to help her find out the truth. Leo noticed that the window near the bookshelf was slightly open each morning, and there were small footprints on the windowsill (窗台) .
One evening, Leo hid in the library after closing time. At 8 p. m. , he heard soft footsteps. A thin figure (身影) walked to the bookshelf and started reading. It was Lily, a new student who was too shy to borrow books during the day. She loved ancient mysteries but was afraid of talking to others.
Leo didn’t tell anyone about Lily. Instead, he left a note: “I love mysteries too. Let’s share books sometime!” The next morning, the books were neatly put back, and there was a smiley face on the note.

In recent years, many middle schools in China have set up “music corners” to help students relax because of heavy study pressure. These small, comfortable spaces— usually in quiet hallways or near classroom doors— are carefully arranged: walls are decorated with music posters drawn by students, small desk lamps give off warm light, and shelves hold simple instruments like ordinary guitars, colorful ukeleles and small harmonicas. Some schools even add soft cushions (垫子) on the floor, which makes it easier for students to sit and enjoy music.
The music corners open during morning break, lunch break and after school. Students don’t need to be good at music; they can just pick up an instrument and play a simple piece of music, sing with friends, or even just listen to others play. Last month, No. 5 Middle School in Guangzhou did a survey with 300 students: over 80% of them said the music corner helped them feel less stressed from schoolwork and exams. “I used to feel nervous before math tests,” said 15-year-old Li Jia. “Now I play the ukelele for 10 minutes after class, and I feel much calmer.” Another student, Wang Ming, said he made two friends who love playing the guitar at the music corner.
Some students even write their own short songs about school life— like songs about PE class or art class— and share them at the music corner. This not only makes them more creative but also helps them show their feelings better. “Music brings us closer,” said music teacher Mr. Zhang. “It’s not about being good at singing or playing— it’s about enjoying the moment together and finding happiness in small things.”
31. Why do schools set up music corners?
A To teach students to be music experts.
B. To hold music competitions.
C. To help students relax.
32. When can students use the music corners?
A. During class time.
B. During break time and after school.
C. On weekends.
33. What can we find out from the survey in No. 5 Middle School?
A. Most students like the music corner.
B. Few students have stress from schoolwork.
C. All students are good at playing instruments.
34. What do some students do at the music corner besides playing and singing?
A. Do their homework. B. Write their own songs. C. Sell musical instruments.
35. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. Music Experts in Middle Schools
B. How to Play the Ukelele
C. School Music Corners—A Happy Place

A. To teach students to be music experts.
B. To hold music competitions.
C. To help students relax.
32. When can students use the music corners?
A. During class time.
B. During break time and after school.
C. On weekends.
33. What can we find out from the survey in No. 5 Middle School?
A. Most students like the music corner.
B. Few students have stress from schoolwork.
C. All students are good at playing instruments.
34. What do some students do at the music corner besides playing and singing?
A. Do their homework. B. Write their own songs. C. Sell musical instruments.
35. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. Music Experts in Middle Schools

C. School Music Corners—A Happy Place
