Are you different because you are the first, second, or third child in your family — or maybe the last of nine? A study found that first-borns have an average IQ that is three points higher than people who fall into a different place in the birth order, perhaps because first-borns often help younger brothers and sisters, which improves their own skills. In 2007, an international organization of CEOs found that 43% of CEOs are first-borns, 33% are middle children, and 23% are last-borns. First-borns are more likely to be doctors and astronauts and get higher pay. If first-borns are more successful, last-borns are generally more agreeable. They are also more likely to be funny, possibly to get attention from all the bigger people at the dinner table. Mark Twain and Stephen Colbert were both the youngest in large families, and Jim Carrey was the youngest of four. According to a 2007 Time magazine article, “The Power of Birth Order”, last-borns are more likely to be artists and successful businessmen. Then there are the middle children: we have not ignored them! Many middle children are short of one-on-one time with their parents. They often feel short-changed(受亏待): the oldest gets more rights, and the youngest is spoiled. Though they may be ignored, middle children are more likely to grow into easygoing adults. Many factors make us who we are, but if the research is correct, birth order may be one of the most important factors. 29. Who is most likely to be a CEO? A. A first-born. B. A second-born. C. A third-born. D. A last-born. 30. What does the underlined word agreeable in the 3rd paragraph mean? A. 同意的 B. 令人愉快的 C. 宠溺的 D. 被亏待的 31. What can we learn about Jim Carrey? A. He was likely to be given low pay. B. He was a middle child. C. He was a first-born. D. He was likely to be funny. 32. What is the best title for the passage? A. The Advantages of Being a First-Born Child B. Famous People and Their Family Birth Order C. Birth Order and Personality: What the Research Says D. Why Middle Children Feel Ignored at Home C The night was stormy and the rest of the family were already in their bedrooms. Catherine crossed the hall and listened to the strong wind and heavy rain outside the ancient abbey. She was frightened when the wind shut a door. She felt even more frightened as she imagined all the awful situations. Catherine was happy to be at her friends’ house. “I’m perfectly safe in this house. Eleanor’s room is near mine so I mustn’t be afraid.” she thought. She opened her bedroom door, saw a cheerful fire and was glad to be inside her room and not in the storm. Then she noticed the curtains were moving. As she walked to the windows to make sure there wasn’t a ghost(幽灵)behind them. Of course it was only the wind! She noticed an old box near the window. Now, Catherine, don’t start imagining what’s in that! Silly girl! She started to get ready for bed but she noticed a tall, black cupboard in the corner of the room. That can’t be the black cupboard Henry told me in his ghost story! Catherine picked up her candle and slowly walked towards the cupboard. It’s black and old, just like the cupboard Henry told me! Catherine saw the key was in the door and couldn’t help opening it to see what was inside. She could not sleep until she knew what was in that cupboard, but she was very afraid as she tried to open it. Very afraid but not discouraged, at last, the turned, but she still couldn’t open the door. She stopped, listened to the sounds outside and she felt awful. There are surely terrible things in that cupboard and she can’t sleep until she knows what they are! ____________ (Adapted from Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen) 33. A. Catherine will overcome her fear and manage to open the cupboard, discovering the contents. B. Catherine will decide the cupboard is too terrifying and will try to ignore it, eventually falling asleep despite her unease. D. Catherine will find a way to lock the cupboard or get rid of the key, choosing to forget about its mysterious contents. D Professional writing isn’t easy. As a blogger, journalist or reporter, you have to meet several challenges. You have to keep up with the latest developments and at the same time write timely, interesting and unique content. The same goes for scientists, researchers and analysts and other professionals. With floods of information being published on the web every day, things aren’t getting easier. Fortunately, Artificial Intelligence has a few ways to help with professional writing, among which is smart proofreading. Software sellers have always tried to help writers by adding proofreading features to their tools. But those efforts can slightly anger someone with more-than-average writing skills. However, that is changing as AI is getting better at understanding the context and purpose of the written text. One example is Microsoft Word’s New Editor Feature, a tool that uses AI to provide more than simple proofreading. Editor can understand slight differences in your article much better than other tools do. It flags not only grammatical errors and style mistakes, but also the use of unnecessary complex words and overused terms. For instance, it knows when you’re using the word “really” to emphasize a point or to raise a question. It also gives reasons for its decisions and provides smart suggestions when it considers something as incorrect. For example, if it marks a sentence as passive, it will provide a reworded version in active voice. Editor has been well received by professional writers, though it’s still far from perfect. However, AI-powered writing assistance is fast becoming a competitive market. Grammarly, a grammar checker, uses AI to help with all writing tasks on the web. Atomic Reach is another player, which uses machine learning to provide feedback on the readability of written context. 37. Why is smart proofreading developed? A. To help find target information. B. To help improve users’ writing. C. To inform writers of the latest news. D. To overcome the challenges AI meets. 38. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. Dissatisfaction caused by proofreading. B. The writers’ efforts in collecting information. C. One’s writing level. D. The sellers’ hard work. 39. What is the characteristic of Microsoft Word’s New Editor Feature? A. It is a perfect proofreading tool. B. It removes unnecessary expressions. C. It offers information and asks questions. D. It marks mistakes and gives suggestions. 40. How does the writer develop the last paragraph? A. By doing researches. B. By making comparison. C. By listing examples. D. By explaining cause and effect. 第二节 阅读填空(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分) My favorite Chinese Book is To Live.
