Try to think about this: you sit down and begin to eat a tomato. Suddenly, the tomato starts to scream (尖叫)! This would never really happen. But a new study shows that plants make sounds when their stems (茎) are cut off.
Scientists in Israel did the study. They used ultrasonic microphones (超声传声器) to record the sounds of tomato plants in boxes. They listened to three groups of plants.
The first two groups made sounds 30 to 50 times every hour. The third group only made the sound once every hour. “When tomatoes are not stressed at all, they are very quiet.” Lilach Hadany from the study team told CNN.
Scientists believed that animals and insects may listen to the sounds. For example, the sound can tell them that the plant is stressed and not good for laying eggs on. When an animal wants to eat plants, it can also use sounds to choose which one to eat.
The scientists also listened to other crops such as wheat (小麦) and corn. They also made more sounds when stressed. Scientists said the study would help farmers in the future. They can better take care of the crops by “hearing” how plants feel.
6. The writer makes readers interested by making them think of something amazing.
7. Tomatoes may make fewer sounds when we cut off their stems.
8. The first two groups made sounds once every hour.

Each year, millions of tourists from all over the world go to see the Alps. The Alps can be a really popular place for skiers (滑雪者) because of the snow.
Antoine Guisan and Sabine Rumpf are experts who study the Alps. They have recently found that plants and grass on the Alps are not only spreading but also getting thicker and greener. 1 At the same time, the Alps are losing the snow.
The reason is that our planet is getting warmer. When people burn fuels (燃料), CO₂ goes into the air and keeps heat on the planet. So the earth’s average (平均的) temperature has been rising. It has risen about 1℃ since 1880.
That might not seem like a very big problem, but actually even small changes can make huge differences. The Alps in Switzerland have seen some of these changes. 2 About 1,200 new lakes have been formed there since 1850. The water of these lakes has come from melting glaciers (正在融化的冰川).
Now, the Alps are growing greener. This brings some other problems. One is that new plants and animals show up. They could put the current (现在的) ones at risk. Another problem is that green can lead to faster warming. That’s because green doesn’t reflect sunlight as well as the white of snow does. 3 This can cause snow, ice and glaciers on the mountains to melt much faster.
“This is a very important discovery,” Guisan said. After all, the more we know, the easier it will be for us to help.
11. According to experts, which is a problem that the Alps are facing?
A. More and more fuels are burnt there.
B. More and more tourists are going there.
C. The plants there are getting thicker and greener.
12. What does the writer think of the 1℃ rise in the Earth’s average temperature?
A. It has a big influence. B. It is a small problem. C. It didn’t take long.
13. What does the underlined word “ones” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A. Mountains. B. Lakes and glaciers. C. Plants and animals.
14. Which blank can the sentence “So the greener the mountains are, the more heat they keep.” be put in?
A 1 B. 2 C. 3
15. What will probably be discussed in the following paragraph?
A. When the best time to visit the Alps is.
B. What experts will do to help the warming planet.
C. How the white of snow reflects sunlight.

Seeing changes in China
It was a warm spring day in 2021. Chen Beier, a reporter and TV presenter (主持人) from Hong Kong, China, was on her way to a small village called Atule’ er. The small village sits at the top of an 800-meter-high cliff (悬崖). People can only get up to it by climbing a 2,556-step steel ladder (钢梯). It is very dangerous.
So, was Chen looking for adventure there? The answer is no. The famous presenter was, instead, making a documentary.
In February 2021, China reached an important goal. It got rid of poverty (摆脱贫困). Many people couldn’t believe this. After all, China has a large number of poor villages. In order to show the truth to people, Chen set out to make No Poverty Land.
The trip turned out to be hard, for example, when Chen was halfway up the ladder to Atule’ er, she felt so tired that she could hardly go any further. She was also afraid of the height. The villagers advised her to stop the climb, but the woman continued her climb.
This steel ladder, in fact, is only six years old. Before it was built, the villagers had to face even bigger danger and use a rattan (藤条) ladder. The government has also built houses for the villagers at the foot of the mountain. Through No Poverty Land, people can easily see how life in poor areas of China has been improved.
China has changed a lot, but some people just find it hard to believe. Now, Chen has shown us what we can do about that: Don’t just tell people about the great changes; show them when you can.
