The Internet has provided us with easy ways to get information but it also causes worries. Some experts argue that the Internet will lead to forgetfulness, because people won’t practise their memory.
Is the Internet really doing harm to our memories — or will these experts be wrong? After all, the brain’s attention system and love for new experiences were already there long before the digital age, and our ability to remember is nearly endless. According to Michael Merzenich, a brain researcher, the brain keeps changing throughout our lives, depending on how we use it.
But our brains don’t work well when we’re not focused. When we repeatedly check text messages and social media during work, we weaken our ability to form both short-term and long-term memories. Flooding information also influences our memory. The strong compulsion to keep taking in information means we often check social media when we should rest our brains for memory work. Another problem is the effortless way of getting information online. Trying to actively recall information is good memory training, but today we use online search tools instead.
However, Betsy Sparrow, a psychologist (心理学家) from Columbia University, suggests that the Internet may change only what we remember, not our memory ability. It helps to store endless information and this will change our learning focus from remembering facts to understanding ideas.
“There may be costs from greater dependence on the Internet, but generally the advantages are more important,” says psychologist Benjamin Storm. “Memory is changing, but is it changing for the better? At this point, we don’t know.”
26. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. Our brains stop changing once we become adults.
B. The Internet may not be as harmful to memory as experts fear.
C. Human memory is running out because of digital technology.
D. People should stay away from the digital world.
27. What does the word “compulsion” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Wish. B. Ability C. Chance D. Rule.
28. How does Benjamin Storm like the effects of the Internet on memory?
A. Positive but still unsure. B. Negative but still hopeful.
C. Encouraged and confident. D. Worried and sad.
29. What can we learn from the passage?
A. New experiences improve the brain’s attention system.
B. Checking social media can give the brain proper breaks.
C. The Internet may produce a change of focus in learning.
D. We should never use online search tools.
30. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To argue for a belief. B. To present different views.
C. To examine causes and effects. D. To ask people to protect memory.

The two-day weekend provides me with more time for my all-round development. I can take up new hobbies, like gardening, yoga or painting. Also, I can take part in volunteer work or community service. These activities help open my eyes, improve my communication skills and grow my sense of responsibility.
My parents are busy working on weekends. For two days, there’s no one watching over me. I may lose myself in playing computer games or watching TV rather than focusing on my studies. If I relax over the weekend while other classmates continue studying, I am afraid I will fall behind.

A Better Me
Since I entered Grade Nine, I have changed a lot. First, I have less free time after school. What’s more, I used to finish homework in a hurry. But now I spend more time on my study and take every task seriously.
My English teacher is the person who inspires me most. She is patient and friendly. When I was afraid to speak in front of the class, she encouraged me to have a try. With her support, I became more confident little by little.
To be a better me, I will keep finding better learning ways, like using flashcards to remember English words. Besides, I will bravely ask my teachers and classmates for help when (ever) I meet difficulties. I believe I can make greater progress through my efforts.
