The Internet has become an important part of our daily life. Many people use it for work, study and entertainment. But do you know how the Internet was invented?
The Internet was first developed in the 1960s by the US Department of Defense. At that time, it was called ARPANET. It was designed to connect computers at different universities and research centers. The goal was to share information and keep communication possible even if part of the network was destroyed.
In the 1970s, scientists developed a way to send data between different networks. This was called TCP/IP. It became the standard for how data is sent over the Internet.
In the 1990s, the World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee. This made it easier for people to use the Internet. They could use browsers to view web pages with pictures and text.

How AI is changing our lives
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a faraway idea from movies or books. Today, it’s around us every day, quietly changing how we live, study and work—just like the new technologies we learned about in our science class.
Let’s start with daily life. Have you ever asked a smart speaker to play your favorite song? Or used an app that recommends delicious snacks based on what you’ve ordered before? That’s AI at work! Even the navigation app your parents use to drive you to school uses AI. It checks real-time traffic and finds the fastest way, so you never have to worry about being late for class.
In school, AI is becoming a helpful study partner. Many of our textbooks now have AI learning tools. For example, if you’re struggling with English listening, the AI tool can pick out your weak points and give you special practice. Some schools also have AI teaching assistants. They can answer your questions about math formulas or history facts even after class, just like a friend who’s good at all subjects.
AI is also doing great things in hospitals. Doctors use AI to look at X-ray and CT pictures. AI can find small problems that are hard for humans to see, helping sick people get better faster. Some AI systems can even tell people if they might get certain diseases early, so they can take care of their health before it’s too late.
Of course, AI isn’t perfect. Some people worry that AI might take over some jobs in the future. But our textbook says that new technologies always bring new jobs too. If we learn new skills, we can work with AI instead of worrying about it.
All in all, AI is making our world a better place. As long as we use it in the right way, it will keep helping us grow and learn— just like the useful tools we use in our daily study.

For the past decades, shopping habits have changed dramatically with technology. While traditional stores (like markets and supermarkets) and online shops both sell products, they offer very different experiences for different needs. Comparing and Contrasting:
Both provide daily things like food, clothes, and electronic devices.
Prices are shown clearly.
High-quality products are available in both places, but it is essential to check customer reviews when shopping online to avoid unsatisfactory purchases.
Feature
Traditional Shopping
Online Shopping
Atmosphere
It provides a tangible experience—you can touch, smell, and try on products personally before making a purchase decision.
It offers a virtual experience—you can browse products comfortably at home, but you cannot physically touch or smell the items.
Convenience
You have to visit the store in person and abide by its opening hours, which may be inconvenient for busy people.
It enables you to shop at anytime and from any location, as online stores operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Payment
Multiple payment methods are accepted at the checkout, including cash, bank cards, and mobile payment apps.
You mainly rely on digital payments, such as credit cards, e-wallets, and installment payment services.
Delivery
You can take your purchased items home immediately after payment, with no need to wait for delivery.
You have to wait for the goods to be delivered, and the delivery time usually ranges from a few hours to several days.
Customer Service
You can communicate face-to-face with shop assistants to get professional help and practical advice.
You can seek assistance through chatbots, emails, or phone calls, but there is no face-to-face interaction.
Mrs. Lin, a 65-year-old woman, says: “I prefer traditional markets because I enjoy chatting with sellers and seeing products with my own eyes. Online shopping lacks the personal touch that I value.”
Tom, a 16-year-old student, holds a different opinion: “I am fond of online shopping! It saves me a lot of time, and I can easily compare prices across different platforms. Besides, the delivery service sends the goods directly to my door.”

There is no doubt (疑问) that the world will be a very different place in 2045. So what’s going to happen then? It’s pretty likely that robots and AI technology will change a lot of industries (行业). Also, self-driving and flying cars will come into our daily life, bringing us much convenience (便利).
However, scientists have even bigger ideas. In a video series called Forward to the Future, three researchers predicted what they imagined would be reality in 2045.
Dr. Justin Sanchez believes we’ll be at a point where we can control things simply by using our mind. “Imagine a world where you could just use your thoughts to control your environment,” Dr. Justin said. According to him, we have made some progress already.
The future has more than just that. Many other exciting things could change the buildings and other objects around us, says Stefanie Tompkins. “We’ll be able to build things that are very strong but also lightweight (轻量型的). We don’t even know the materials (材料) around us,” she predicted.
Pam Melroy believes we’re going to find that we have a very different relationship with the machines around us, “I think we’ll begin to see a time when we’re able to control a machine just by pressing a button (按钮) or only saying some simple words, “she said. For example, right now, to land a plane safely, a pilot has to go through many steps in the right order. But in 2045, in Pam’s words, a pilot may just need to say the words “prepare for landing”. Then the computer knows the steps it needs to take. Or perhaps, with AI, a pilot won’t even be necessary.
1.Where are these researchers’ predictions from?
A.From a picture book. B.From a video series. C.From a radio report. D.From a science magazine.
2.Which of the following would be possible according to Justin?
A.Seeing robots in every industry. B.Letting computers control all machines.
C.Using thoughts to control the environment. D.Getting to work by self-driving or flying car.
3.In Stefanie’s imagination, future buildings will be _______.
A.safer B.larger C.reusable D.amazing
4.Why does the writer give an example in the last paragraph?
A.To explain Pam’s idea. B.To describe an achievement.
C.To show the importance of AI. D.To interest readers in future life.
5.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To encourage us to look into the future. B.To share some predictions about the future.
C.To introduce some famous experts in science. D.To show the importance of developing technology.

3.推理判断题。根据文章第4段“‘We’ll be able to build things that are very strong but also lightweight (轻量型的). We don’t even know the materials (材料) around us,’ she predicted.”可知,她预测:“我们将能够建造出非常坚固但又轻便的东西,我们甚至还不了解身边的一些材料。”因此可推知,这样的建筑是令人惊叹的。故选D。
4.篇章结构题。根据文章第5段“Pam Melroy believes we’re going to find that we have a very different relationship with the machines around us... For example, right now, to land a plane safely, a pilot has to go through many steps in the right order.” 故选A。

Today there are already robots working in factories. Some can help to build cars, and they do simple jobs over and over again. Fewer people will do such jobs in the future because they are boring, but robots will never get bored.
Scientists are now trying to make robots look like humans and do the same things as we do. Some robots in Japan can walk and dance. They are fun to watch. However, some scientists believe that although we can make robots move like people, it will be difficult to make them really think like a human. For example, scientist James White thinks that robots will never be able to wake up and know where they are. But many scientists disagree with Mr White. They think that robots will even be able to talk like humans in 25 to 50 years.
Some scientists believe that there will be more robots in the future. However, they agree it may take hundreds of years. These new robots will have many different shapes. Some will look like humans, and others might look like animals. In India, for example, scientists made robots that look like snakes. If buildings fall down with people inside, these snake robots can help look for people under the buildings. This was not possible 20 years ago, but computers and rockets (火箭) also seemed impossible 100 years ago. We never know what will happen in the future.
根据短文内容选择最佳答案。

① A recent online post on Shenzhen’s public restrooms by a woman surnamed Wang, who returned to her hometown for the Spring Festival holiday, has gained a warm reply by netizens and got a discussion of what people miss the most about Shenzhen when they leave the city.
② Wang said on her WeChat on Feb. 8 that Shenzhen is a very convenient city, which is why she loves it.
③ “There is always toilet paper in the restrooms. But back in my hometown, you have to scan a QR code to pay for it, and unluckily, the app doesn’t work sometimes.”
④ On the social media platform, many travelers, including those visiting the city, shared fond memories of Shenzhen’s public restrooms.
⑤ “Shenzhen’s public restrooms are clean. They have clean air, hand soap, and hand dryers. Some are air-conditioned and even with showers. What is the most important is that they have toilet paper,” said netizens praising the restrooms.
⑥ The praise by netizens is the result of the so-called “toilet revolution (革命),” which started in 2017, requiring the city’s 4,500 public toilets to offer free toilet paper as per restroom management standards. To get all the restrooms taken part in the “revolution,” the government introduced monthly public restroom grades based on the health and environment of public restrooms across the city.
⑦ The restroom services also include a family restroom, which is meant for families or anyone who needs extra privacy or extra time due to a disability. According to the government, one third of the city’s public restrooms, has arranged a family restroom.
⑧ Meanwhile, LED screens located at the entrance to many new restrooms in shopping centers and at the airport show information about waiting times and the number of spare stalls, along with weather and air quality information. According to the government, the city will continue improving the service and intelligence of public restrooms.

①On my way back home, I was drawn by a familiar sweet aroma (香味) to an old man making sugar paintings on a little stool (凳子). I walked straight towards him without a second thought.
②Nothing is better than the sugar painting to me. Watching the process of making a sugar painting is a true feast (盛宴) for my eyes.
③The old man, with his great skills, created delicate sugar paintings with simple tools, including a small pot, a spoon, a table and some malt sugar (麦芽糖). The sweet smell flew into my nose slowly as the sugar was melted in the pot. After knowing what to paint, the old man scooped (挖,舀) a spoonful of sugar and put the spoon above the table. He moved the spoon a little, and then quickly moved his hands before malt sugar got hard. The golden liquid was scattered (分散) accordingly, thick or thin. It was shortly after the old man moved his hands up or down, fast or slowly that a wonderful painting appeared in front of me. Amazing!
④Can you imagine such a lively painting being finished in such a short time? Before malt sugar was completely cold, a thin stick was pressed on the sugar, making it easy to hold.
⑤I bought two sugar paintings—a monkey (for my son) and a heart (for me). Taking a bite, I was reminded of my childhood. In those days, I held Mom’s hand, squeezed through (挤过) crowds in the park, and watched the amazing sugar painting process. Mom always bought me a dragon one, the biggest and sweetest. Teamwork in nature
Honeybees: Honeybees live in hives where each bee has a different job. Worker bees collect nectar and pollen, protect the hive, and take care of baby bees. The queen bee lays eggs, and drones mate with the queen. When a worker bee finds food, it does a “waggle dance” to show other bees where the food is and how far it is. By working together, the hive gets enough food to live through winter.
Meerkats: Meerkats live in groups called mobs. When most meerkats go out to look for insects and small animals to eat, one or two stay behind as lookouts. If they see a predator—like a hawk, a snake, or a fox—they make a loud call—then all meerkats hide right away. They also share food and take turns looking after the young. This way, the whole group stays safe and full.
Orcas: Orcas (also called killer whales) hunt in groups called pods. When they go after food like fish or seals, they work together: some orcas chase the prey into a small group, and others attack one by one. For bigger prey like large whales, they may push the prey to the water surface so it can’t breathe. With teamwork, they can catch food that a single orca couldn’t get.
1.What does a honeybee’s “waggle dance” do?
A.Help the queen lay eggs. B.Tell other bees where food is.
C.Guard the hive from enemies. D.Care for baby bees.
2.Why do meerkats have lookouts while looking for food?
A.To find more food. B.To teach young meerkats to hunt.
C.To watch for dangerous animals. D.To take turns resting.
3.How are honeybees and orcas similar in teamwork?
A.Both have a queen to lead the group. B.Both use teamwork to get food.
C.Both live in mobs. D.Both have lookouts for predators.
4.The word “predator” in the meerkat paragraph most likely means ________
A.Animals that hunt other animals for food. B.Animals that are harmless to others.
C.Animals that live in groups. D.Animals that lay eggs.
5.Why can orcas catch big prey in pods?
A.Big prey is scared of groups. B.Big prey only lives in groups.
C.Pods can swim faster than single orca. D.A single orca isn’t strong enough.
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.B 4.A 5.D

4.词句猜测题。根据“If they see a predator... they make a loud call—then all meerkats hide right away.”可知,猫鼬见到predator后会立即躲藏,说明这是一种会给它们带来危险的动物,即“捕食性动物”或“天敌”。故选A。
5.推理判断题。根据文中末句“With teamwork, they can catch food that a single orca couldn’t get.”可知,虎鲸团队能捕捉单只无法获得的猎物。由此可推断,根本原因是单只虎鲸力量不足,无法独立完成捕猎,因此需要合作。故选D。
Drones (无人机): Useful Helpers in Our Daily Lives
In recent years, drones have become more and more popular. These small flying machines, which can be controlled by remote devices, are no longer just toys for hobbyists. They are now playing important roles in many parts of our daily lives, making our work easier and life more convenient.
One of the most common uses of drones is in delivery services. Big companies like Amazon have tested drone delivery for a long time. Instead of sending delivery workers by bike or car, drones can carry small packages (such as books, snacks, and even medicine) to people’s homes quickly. This is especially helpful in areas with heavy traffic, as drones can fly over cars and reach the destination in less time.
Drones also bring great benefits to agriculture. Farmers use drones to check their crops. Equipped with special cameras, drones can fly over large fields and take clear pictures. Farmers can then look at these pictures to see if their crops are healthy, if they need more water, or if there are pests. This helps farmers save a lot of time and energy compared to walking around the fields by themselves.
Besides, drones are useful in search and rescue work. When someone gets lost in the mountains or a forest, rescuers can use drones to look for them. Drones can cover large areas quickly and send real-time videos back to rescuers. This makes it much easier for rescuers to find the lost person, especially in dangerous or hard-to-reach places.
However, using drones also has some rules. For example, drones cannot fly near airports (because they may disturb planes) and must not be used to take photos of other people’s houses without permission. Following these rules helps keep everyone safe and protects people’s privacy.
With their many useful functions, drones are sure to become even more important in our daily lives in the future.

6.What does the writer think of AI?
A.It is useless for students. B.It is perfect and has no problems.
C.It is helpful if used properly. D.It will take all jobs from humans.

D.The Role of Traditional Markets in the Digital Age
Ever feel lost with numbers? The right graph can help! It makes data clear. Let’s look at the four most common graph types:
Pie Chart
It’s good for showing a certain part of a whole and the proportion (比例) of each part. A pie chart enables you to plan your pocket money wisely: for snacks, books, and savings.
Line Graph
An excellent choice if you want to describe how something changes over time. It is also good for showing big differences. Many teachers prefer using a line graph to track students’ grades.
Colorful Bar Graph
A colorful bar graph can also show changes over time. However, it’s more direct to make comparisons between two or more things. That’s why we can use it to compare the popularity of different school clubs among your classmates.
Venn Diagram
A Venn Diagram features two overlapping circles. It’s perfect for sorting information. You can use a Venn Diagram to sort plants, for example. Plants with green leaves go on the left. Plants with flowers go on the right. Plants with both go in the middle where the circles overlap.

My name is Cathy Taylor. When I was a kid, my mom would let me help her make popcorn on cold winter nights. We would get out a pan (平底锅), some oil and butter, and wait for the first popcorn to jump with an exciting sound. Then, we would shake the pan over the stove (炉子) to keep the popcorn from burning—shake, shake, shake, and pop, pop, pop—until the pan was filled with delicious popcorn! Mom would pour it all into a big bowl and add some salt on top.
Later, we would all come to the living room. Dad would sit in his chair, while my mom, brothers, and I would relax on the sofa. There was always a lot of popcorn to share, and Mom even let me eat the half.
The funny thing is that I have already forgotten the shows we watched, but I still remember the smell of the popcorn, the warmth of the bowl, and the joy of being with my family. I felt so loved, safe and happy. We didn’t have a big house, expensive snacks or much money, but our love for each other was everything.
