Diana Nyad, born in 1949, is one of the world’s greatest long-distance swimmers. She started as a speed swimmer, winning races in high school and dreaming of the Olympics. However, Nyad fell ill with heart disease before she could compete in the 1968 Olympic Games and had to spend three months in bed. By the time Nyad was better, she was unable to swim as fast as she had previously.
Nyad then turned from speed swimming to distance swimming. Her first race was 10 miles in the cold waters of Lake Ontario. Even though she came in tenth place, she was the first woman ever to complete the course. In 1974, Nyad set a record while swimming a 22-mile race in the Bay of Naples, Italy. That same year she tried to swim back and forth across Lake Ontario, a total of 64 miles. Nyad made it across the lake, but on the return trip, she lost consciousness and had to be pulled from the water. In 1975, she swam around Manhattan Island, a distance of 28 miles, in a record of 7 hours and 57 minutes. Three years later she swam 102 miles from the Bahamas to Florida.
In 2010, at the age of 61, Nyad announced she would swim from Cuba to Florida. In order to train, Nyad spent as many as 14 hours a day swimming in the ocean. The swim from Cuba to Florida would last at least 60 hours and cover 103 miles. Unfortunately, bad weather forced Nyad to wait until the next year. In 2011, Nyad attempted the swim but was blown off course after being in the water for 29 hours. Nyad attempted the swim again a few months later, but she had to stop because of too many jellyfish stings (海蜇蜇伤).
Despite (尽管) these setbacks, Nyad continues to persevere and plans to eventually make the Cuba-to-Florida swim. She has made a vow (誓言) to never stop swimming and wants other older Americans to understand that it is never too late to make one’s dreams come true.
25. What do we know about Nyad?

We all need to eat, and when we go to buy food at the supermarket, we’re offered many choice. But we often buy food that’s been produced in huge amounts and that’s traveled many miles before it ends up on our plate. So for some, growing their own food is a better choice – and it tastes good too!
From growing vegetables in little pots on your balcony to taking care of a small plot of land, there are many ways to produce home-grown food. It can be backbreaking work digging, weeding and watering the soil, but the result is fresh, home-grown fruits and vegetables, helping us keep a ‘five-a-day’ diet.
The recent Covid-19 pandemic lock-down means demand for homegrown food has seen a comeback in the UK. Miriam Dobson from the University of Sheffield, told the BBC that some people have been spending a lot of their time on their plots, growing plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables – which, at times, have been challenging to buy in supermarkets. She says “Coronavirus has reminded people of the weakness within our global food system. In such a difficult time, interest in self-support rises.”
But for those with limited space, a solution to grow your own vegetables lies closer to home – using pots. Sheila Brand lives in a third-floor flat in Rotterdam. She has managed to grow tomatoes and eggplants and is already harvesting raspberries. She told the BBC watching the plants grow “is very exciting: 'Oh it's got a new leaf!' ”
As well as the benefits of saving money and enjoying tasty food, growing your own from a balcony or window ledge not only improves your well-being and immediate environment, you can actually grow a lot of vegetables. So, maybe it’s time for us all to get planting and develop our green fingers!
28. A “five-a-day” diet (Para. 2) probably refers to a diet that include__________ every day.
A. Five meals B. Enough fruits and vegetables
C. Five kinds of rice D. Plenty of water
29. According to Para 3, home-grown food is getting popular again in the UK recently because _____.
A. It’s more interesting, cheap and delicious.
B. our global food system is doing harm to us.
C. It saves the time and money on transportation.
D. it can be hard to buy fresh food during the pandemic.
30. According to the writer, where can you grow your own food if you live in a small flat?
A. In a pot. B. On a plate. C. In a garden. D. On the roof.
31. What does the writer imply in the last sentence?
A. Growing your own food can do good to your health.
B. Growing your own food can make your fingers green.
C. Growing your own food can improve your gardening skills.
D. Growing your own food can bring your family more happiness.
D
If you want to take good care of your eyes and vision (视力), I encourage you to adopt the habit of blinking (眨眼) softly as often as possible. Frequent and gentle blinking is important to keep healthy eyes and good vision because it helps to keep your eyes coated with three beneficial layers (层) of tears.
The first layer of tears lies right up against the whites of your eyes, and provides an even coat of protein-rich moisture (水分) for the second layer to stick to. The middle watery layer helps to wash away foreign dust. It also provides your eyes with minerals, a variety of proteins, and moisture (水汽). The third outer layer of tears is somewhat oily. It serves to prevent the middle watery layer from drying quickly, and smooths your eyes.
If your eyes are not regularly coated with the three layers of tears described above, they will be short of moisture and cleaning, and they will be unnecessarily tired.
One of the reasons why many of us don’t blink as often as we should is that we don’t see frequent blinking in mainstream media. Actors and new presenters are typically trained to blink as infrequently as possible, so when we take in most forms of media, our minds learn that it isn’t normal to blink frequently.
To fully support your eyes and vision, it’s best to blink softly every two to four seconds, which means about fifteen to thirty blinks per minute. By making an effort to softly blink at this rate, over time, your body will turn your efforts into a habit. If you’re thinking that such frequent blinking will make reading a book or viewing a movie uncomfortable, give it a try and you’ll see right away that it doesn’t take away from these experiences at all.
32. What does the author suggest in the text?
A. Closing and opening our eyes frequently and gently.
B. Taking good care of our eyes by doing eye exercises.
C. Maintaining healthy eyes to prevent nearsightedness.
D. Crying as often as possible to gain three layers of tears.
33. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The classification of tears.
B. The causes of three layers of tear.
C. The importance of the first layer of tears.
D. The main functions of three layers of tears.
34. How does the author think of blinking frequently when reading?
A. Annoying. B. Disagreeable.
C. Harmless. D. Incredible.
35 What is the best title for the text?
A. Keep Eyes Coated with as Many Layers of Tears as Possible.
B. Try Frequent Blinking for Healthier Eyes and Better Vision.
C. Actors and News Presenters Set Us a Bad Example in Lifestyle.
D. Blinking Lowers the Experiences When Reading or Seeing a Film.

A. She competed in the 1968 Olympics.
B. Her illness changed the course of her life
C. Her first long-distance race was 22 miles.
D. She was the first to swim across Lake Ontario.
26. What does the underlined word “setbacks” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. advantages B. records
C. improvements D. difficulties

A. The classification of tears.
B. The causes of three layers of tear.
C. The importance of the first layer of tears.

34. How does the author think of blinking frequently when reading?
A. Annoying. B. Disagreeable.
C. Harmless. D. Incredible.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Keep Eyes Coated with as Many Layers of Tears as Possible.
B. Try Frequent Blinking for Healthier Eyes and Better Vision.

Learning to set goals plays an important role as your child starts to gain independence. However, setting goals doesn’t come naturally to your child, so helping him to learn the process should probably be one of your goals.
Explain the word “goal”. Your child may know what a goal is when it comes to soccer, but he may not understand what it means in everyday life. ___36___
Listen to your child. Ideally, you want your child to be able to decide for himself what his goals are. ____37____ Let him talk about what he thinks he does well and what he thinks he needs to improve. If he’s stuck, you can provide some examples of your own personal goals.
Help keep goals achievable. Don’t throw cold water on your child. ____38____ For example, if your child wants to be a champion swimmer, but can’t swim an entire lap of the pool yet, you can suggest he start by making that his first goal.
___39___ Help your child write down his goals in an easytofollow form. Being able to see and check off the steps on the way to his goal is key in keeping him motivated. A really simple way is to have your child draw a ladder on a piece of paper, writing his goal at the top and each step to that goal on the rungs (梯级). ___40___
A. Change goals every so often.
B. Make a visual goal reminder.
C. Don’t always tell him what you think.

【39题详解】
空缺的是本段的主题句,根据空后“Help your child write down his goals in an easytofollow form.”(帮助你的孩子以简单能懂的方式写下他的目标)所以这里选B(制作一个能看见的目标提示。)为本段的小标题。故选B项。
【40题详解】
空前“A really simple way is to have your child draw a ladder on a piece of paper, writing his goal at the top and each step to that goal on the rungs (梯级).”(一个很简单的方法就是在纸上画一个梯子,在顶部写下他的目标,在横木上写下通向目标的每一步)可知选项承接上文说明这么作的作用是什么。故D(他在向顶部爬梯时他在接近目标。)切题。故选D项。
