第二节(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans.
Though I wanted to share my ideas with him fully,I failed
to do so for fear that I would hold him back.I just kept
nodding when he asked me whether it's OK to do this way
or that way.I thought it was impossible to persuade him
into accepting my views,so I didn't want to waste our time
to discuss.I started to wait to leave immediately we arrived
at the place, and so did he.I just hoped that the presenta-
tion day could come earlier.
Paragraph 2:
One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a
serious disease.I felt so sorry to hear that and I thought I
should visit him in any case.He was a little surprised to see
me when I stepped into his ward with some flowers and
fruits.I offered to do the rest work of our project and he invi-
ted me to share my ideas to perfect it.We began to work as a
fine team and finally finished our project on time. Our hard
work paid off and Dr.Henderson was very satisfied with our
wonderful findings. From this project,we also learned the
significance of teammates.Just as the saying goes, one per-
son can go far,but a group of people can travel farther.

Frederick Phiri is the junk-art king of
Zambia:at just 22,he started to earn an
international reputation for being able to make
complex and elegant sculptures from scrap
(废弃的)metal found in his community.
Phiri's father died when he was starting
primary school.Then his mother abandoned
him and he had to stay with his grandfather.
His grandfather paid for his schooling through
primary school but when he entered secondary
school,he had to get various jobs to pay for
his fees.Yet even in school,he was always
drawing and making things in class.
After graduating,he did what he could to
support himself by making animal sculptures
from wires and sold them to tourists. His work
was so popular that it caught the eye of Karen

nonprofit organization dedicated to education

Beattie's mind:"I handed him a bunch of
scrap metal and said,'Make something with
this.'And he did.It was wonderful."
Today,Phiri continues his art,using
pieces of junk people bring him-keys,broken
bike chains, old metal plugs and whatever
scrap metal is lying around. He then turns the
junk into abstract animals-elephants,cranes,
giraffes,chameleons-and sells them at
Project Luangwa headquarters.The community
has recognized his talents.
"My dream is to earn enough to study art
at the Evelyn Hone College in Lusaka and be
able to make a living from it,"Phiri said,

The idea of changing the world seems
very crazy, but there are a number of small
everyday things we can do to make the world
better.Community centers,parks,libraries,
homeless shelters, hospitals and schools are all
places where students can make a difference
through service.
Alisia Orosco,10,wanted to show her
love and care to the sick kids at University
Children's Hospital in Texas, where her brother
had been a patient. She earned money by
doing part-time jobs and used it to buy
different toys for the children in hospital. Now
she visits three hospitals every year with bags
of toys."I hope to help as many kids as I
can,”Alisia says.“It makes me happy to
make them smile..”

Teens in New Jersey decided to offer
their help at a local soup kitchen where people
with no homes can get free food. But there
wasn't one.They created a one-day soup
kitchen and were able to feed 60 needy people
and allow them to take the rest home.Their
efforts got more people to understand the great
need of the poor in their community.Because
of their efforts and success,a permanent soup
kitchen was created with the $10,000 National
award they received from Newman's Own.
High school students in Las Vegas helped

18-year-old Sadiya was born in Deora,a
small village in eastern India, but moved to
the city of Mumbai when she was 3.In 2020,
when the pandemic broke out,her father's
business was forced to close temporarily and
the family returned to her ancestral village to
wait out the pandemic.
However,it greatly shocked her when she
found that attending school was uncommon in
Deora, where almost half of the villagers
couldn't read.Unable to afford textbooks,
many families often withdrew their children
from schools. They didn't wish to educate
their children, many of whom had to work in
the fields with parents though some had the
desire to read.
Sadiya, the college girl with a strong
sense of social responsibility, has been trying
to seize opportunities to open doors for others.
Fluent in Hindi,Urdu and English, she often
speaks at inter-college events on the right to
education and enjoys a high reputation among
college students.
Used to taking on challenges,Sadiya was

determined to do something for the children.
One day last July,Sadiya sat down with her
family elders and proposed the idea of setting
up a library. Many shook their heads in
disagreement-this wasn't how a young girl
should spend her time.
After many discussions,Sadiya finally
convinced them and gained access to her
relative's guesthouse,mending it with $67 that
she'd won in public-speaking awards.She took
the help of her uncle,Akbar, and cousin,
Nawaz, and got to work.Walls were repainted,
the bamboo roof was repaired and lights and
bookshelves were fixed, and the room was
filled with chairs and a long table.Vivid
charts stuck on the walls-一from anatomy(解
剖)to transportation,.lightened the space.
Looking at the newly-decorated“library'”,
Sadiya couldn't hold back her excitement
while imagining the children reading books
here by light.
All was ready except books. So what
Sadiya was desperate to do next was fill the
shelves with books. She drew on all her
savings and purchased many books suitable for
children online.
