Should Students Be Encouraged to Learn Sinology?
At this week's class meeting,we talked about whether students should
be encouraged to learn sinology. Here are the results.
Some students think learning sinology can develop their ability to learn
languages.Besides,it's their duty to pass on the traditional Chinese culture. However,
other students think they won't have sinology exams so they don't have to learn it at
all. What's more, they have no time to learn it because of their busy study.
In my opinion,we students should be encouraged to learn sinology.By reading some
ancient stories and poems,we can learn a lot from them. Also,we should feel
proud of our rich culture and it should be carried forward.2025-2026学年度第一学期皖东南四校

When my parents moved to a new city,I felt like my world fell apart.
Everything that had once felt familiar was gone:my friends,my routines,
even the streets I used to walk on.I didn't know anyone, and the thought of
starting over terrified me.On the first day at my new school,I sat at the
back of the classroom, hoping no one would notice me.The noise of
students chatting made me feel even smaller, like a stranger who didn't
belong.
But then,during English class,something unexpected happened.The
teacher asked us to introduce ourselves by sharing a short story. My heart
raced and my voice shook as I spoke about how my grandmother taught me
to recite (English poems under the stars in our backyard.I
remembered the smell of jasmine in the summer air and the way my
grandmother's voice carried a quiet strength.To my surprise,the class
listened in silence, and when I finished,a soft round of applause (
came from several students. For the first time that day,I felt seen.
After class,a girl named Lily came up to me."I love poetry, too,"she
said with a warm smile. We talked about our favorite writers and the
comfort that words can bring. She invited me to join the school's English
club. The following weeks were filled with new experiences:reading aloud
with confidence, preparing small plays that made us laugh, even writing
our own poems and sharing them. For the first time since moving,I felt that
English was not just a subject, but a bridge that connected me to others and
gave me courage.
By the end of the term I was no longer the quiet student in the back
row.Standing on stage, reciting a poem with my new friends,I realized that
starting over didn't mean losing myself-it meant discovering a new side
of me,one that was braver, stronger, and ready to belong.

In order to help discover spoilage (and reduce food waste for
supermarkets and consumers, researchers have developed new low-cost,
smart phone-linked,eco-friendly spoilage sensors for meat and fish
packaging.
One in three UK consumers throw away food just because it reaches
the use-by date,but 60%(4.2 million tons)of the f12.5 billion-worth of
food we throw away each year is safe to eat.
The researchers, whose findings were published in ACS Sensors, say

the sensors could also finally replace the use-by date, which is now widely
used to tell if food is fresh and eatable.
The sensors cost two US cents each to make.Known as "paper-based
electrical gas sensors(PEGS)",they sense spoilage gases like ammonia(a
poisonous gas with a strong unpleasant smell)in meat and fish products.
The information provided by the electronic nose is received by a smart
phone, and then you can know whether the food is fresh and safe to eat.
Lead author Dr.Firat Guder,of Imperial's Department of
Bioengineering,said,"Although they're designed to keep us safe,use-by
dates can lead to eatable food being thrown away. They don't always reflect
its actual freshness. In fact, people often get sick from food-borne diseases
due to poor storage, even when an item is within its use-by date.
"These sensors are cheap enough so we hope to see supermarkets using
them within three years. Our goal is to use PEGS in food packaging to
reduce unnecessary food waste."
The authors hope that PEGS could have applications()beyond
food processing,like sensing chemicals in agriculture,air quality,and
detecting disease markers in breath.
28.What is the function of PEGS according to the text?
A.To improve the service of stores.
B.To help supermarkets store foods.
C.To improve the taste of food products
D.To help people test food freshness.

A.It acts as an electronic nose.
B.It reads the information collected by PEGS.
C.It discovers the spoilage gases from foods.
D.It helps print the gas sensors onto paper.
30.What does Dr.Firat Guder say about use-by dates?
A.They are not completely reliable.
B.They can help reduce food waste.
C.They are not accepted by consumers.
D.They are based on scientific research.
31.What does the author mainly talk about in the text?
A.The process of researching spoilage sensors.
B.A new technology in packaging to reduce food waste.
C.Use-by dates'influence on supermarkets and consumers.
D.Various applications of the electronic nose in food storage.

Every morning when the alarm goes off, many people face a hard
choice:to snooze (or not to snooze? If you happen to be an iPhone
user, you may have wondered why the snooze button gives you exactly
nine minutes. This number is not a casual choice as it is tied to historical
design and human sleep science.
The nine-minute snooze period is not unique to the iPhone. In the mid-
2 Oth century, when mechanical(机械的)alarm clocks were the main type
on the market,a leading producer introduced a snooze alarm. However, the
standard gears of mechanical clocks made it difficult to set a double-digit
snooze period.Engineers eventually settled on nine minutes, the largest
possible single--digit(个位数的),to avoid the need to redesign the clock's
mechanism.Apple might have taken the nine-minute snooze to honor this
九年级英语第4页共6页
early invention.
From a physiological point of view,a nine-minute period is practical.
Our bodies start to fall into the second stage of a sleep cycle about 10
minutes after falling asleep. Therefore,a snooze period of nine minutes
allows for less sudden awakening as it helps avoid a deeper stage of sleep.
This timing can also reduce sleepiness and make it slightly easier to wake
up when the alarm rings again.
The debate over whether snoozing is helpful or harmful continues
among sleep experts. Some research suggests that snoozing provides
enough time for the body and brain to change gradually from sleep to
wakefulness. On the other hand, other studies argue that while hitting the
snooze button might give you a brief feeling of extra rest,it fragments your
sleep and makes you more tired than if you wake up with the first alarm.
Continuous, undisturbed sleep is generally better for mental abilities and
overall health. Finally, understanding your own sleep patterns can help you
make the decision between whether to keep hitting the snooze button or
embrace the cruel reality of the first alarm.
32.Why was a nine-minute snooze time chosen for mechanical alarm
clocks initially?
A.To show respect for the early design.
B.To follow the trend of other clock producers.
C.To match the principles of human sleep science.
D.To avoid the change of the clock's inner structure
33.What does the underlined word"fragment"in the last paragraph mean?
A.worsen
B.break
C.shorten
D delay
34.What does the author suggest at the end of the passage?
A.Keep hitting the snooze button to get extra rest.
B.Make a choice by considering your own sleep habits.
C.Ignore the snoozing effect and follow your sleep patterns.
D.Consider both positive and negative effects of snoozing before deciding.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Nine Minutes of Extra Rest or Nine Minutes of Regret?
B.Is the Nine-Minute snooze Beneficial to Our Sleep Routine?
C.Why is the Snooze Button an Important Feature of Alarm Clocks?
D.How Does the Snooze Button Work to Influence Our Sleep Quality?
