Nature is kind of a loving mother, but also a butcher in cold blood. — Victor Hugo As a loving mother, nature nurtures all living things on Earth. It provides fresh air, clean water and fertile land for humans, animals and plants to thrive. The gentle breeze, the blooming flowers and the lush forests all show nature’s warm and caring side. However, nature can turn into a ruthless butcher in an instant. When an earthquake strikes, the ground shakes violently, and buildings collapse in seconds. Tsunamis triggered by underwater quakes can sweep away entire coastal villages. Hurricanes and typhoons bring destructive winds and heavy rains, leaving nothing but ruins in their path. Even droughts and wildfires can turn green lands into deserts and ashes, threatening the lives of countless creatures. We cannot change nature’s dual nature, but we can learn to respect and understand it. By mastering the knowledge of natural disasters and taking proper preventive measures, we can reduce the harm caused by nature’s cruel side and better enjoy the gifts from our loving mother nature. PART TWO Pre-reading 9 What would you do during an earthquake? What should you do during an earthquake? 1. If you’re indoors, hide under a sturdy table and protect your head with your arms; stay away from windows, glass and heavy furniture. 2. If you’re outdoors, move to an open area at once; keep away from tall buildings, power lines and billboards. 3. Never take the elevator—use the stairs to escape if needed. 4. If you’re in a car, pull over to a safe spot away from bridges or overpasses, and wait until the shaking stops. PART THREE While-reading 12 How is a news report usually organized?
