There was magic in the secret garden that spring and summer. At first, everything turned green. Then the green changed to colours—blue, purple and red. There were flowers everywhere.
Dickon and Maryˈs seeds grew. And the roses—the roses! From small buds they grew into large flowers and filled the air with their perfume.
Colin saw it all. He watched the changes as they happened. Dickon pushed his wheelchair to the garden every morning and he spent the day there. Sometimes Colin sat on the grass watching the insects. One day, he watched a mole(鼹鼠)digging a hole. He learnt a lot of things about the ways of these insects and animals. And Dickon taught him about the animals in the wood.
One morning, the children were in the secret garden as usual. When Ben Weatherstaff arrived, Colin said, “Good morning, Ben Weatherstaff. I want you and Dickon and Mary to listen to me because Iˈm going to tell you something very important.”
“Yes, sir!” answered Ben Weatherstaff.
“Iˈm going to do a scientific experiment(科学实验),” he said. “When I grow up, Iˈm going to make scientific discoveries about magic and Iˈm going to start with this experiment. Do you understand?”
“Yes, sir!” said Ben Weatherstaff, but he didnˈt really understand.
“I believe that there is magic in everything,” continued Colin. “Dickon knows some magic. He charms animals and people. Mary also knows a bit of magic because she was born in India. Thereˈs magic in the garden too. Iˈm going to try and put some in me because I want to be well and strong. Iˈm going to say—Magic is in me! And you must all say it too. That is my experiment. Are you going to help, Ben Weatherstaff?”
“Yes, sir!” answered Ben Weatherstaff.
They sat down in a circle. The crow, the fox, the squirrels and the lamb were very curious.
“Now, letˈs begin,” Colin said, and they all started chanting(吟唱).
“Magic is in me. Magic is in me. Magic is in all of us.”
Then Colin stood up and walked round the garden. He went in front with Dickon on one side and Mary on the other. Ben Weatherstaff walked behind.
Colin walked a bit then rested. Then he walked again and rested again. At first, he held Dickonˈs arm, then he walked a few steps alone.
“I can walk! The magic worked!” he cried.
“What is the doctor going to say?” asked Mary.
“Nothing,” Colin answered. “Because we arenˈt going to tell him. No one must know that I can walk and run. Itˈs a surprise for my father when he comes back to Misselthwaite.”
“Heˈs going to think itˈs a dream,” said Mary.

In the next few days, Mary spent almost all her time in the garden. The fresh air from the moor made her hungry, and she was becoming stronger and healthier. One day she noticed the robin (知更鸟)again. He was on top of a wall, singing to her. “Good morning! Isn’t this fun? Come this way!” he seemed to say, as he hopped along the wall. Mary began to laugh as she danced along beside him. “I know the secret garden is on the other side of this wall!” she thought excitedly. “And the robin lives there! But where's the door?”
That evening she asked Martha to stay and talk to her beside the fire after supper. They could hear the wind blowing round the old house, but the room was warm and comfortable. Mary only had one idea in her head.
“Tell me about the garden,” she said.
“Well, all right then, Miss, but we aren't supposed to talk about it, you know. It was Mrs Craven's favourite garden, and she and Mr Craven used to take care of it themselves. They spent hours there, reading and talking. They were very happy. They used the branch of an old tree as a seat. But one day when she was sitting on the branch, it broke, and she fell. She was very badly hurt and the next day she died. That's why he hates the garden so much, and won't let anyone go in there.”
“How sad!” said Mary. “Poor Mr Craven!” It was the second time that she had ever felt sorry for anyone.
Just then, as she was listening to the wind outside, she heard another noise in the house. “Can you hear a child crying?” she asked Martha.
Martha looked confused. “Er, no,” she replied. “No, I think... it must be the wind.”
But at that moment, their door blew open and they heard the crying very clearly.
“I told you!” cried Mary.
At once Martha shut the door. “It was the wind,” she said. But she did not speak in her usual natural way, and Mary did not believe her.
