Spot and Stripe are the first tiger cubs that have ever been born here. Globally, a third of Sumatran cubs in zoos don't make it to adulthood, so I decided to give them round-the-clock care at home. I've got two children—the younger one, Kynan, was extremely happy about the tigers arriving - but all of us really looked forward to being part of their lives and watching them grow. I wasn't worried about bringing them into my home with my wife and kids. These were cubs. They weighed about 2.5 kg and were so small that there was absolutely no risk. As they grew more mobile, we let them move freely around the house during the day, but when we were asleep we had to contain them in a large room, otherwise they'd get up to mischief. We'd come down in the morning to find they'd turned the room upside down, and left it looking like a zoo. Things quickly got very intense due to the huge amount of energy required to look after them. There were some tough times and I just felt extremely tired. I was grateful that my family was there to help. We had to have a bit of a production line going, making up “tiger milk”, washing baby bottles, and cleaning the floors. When Spot and Stripe were four months old, they were learning how to open doors and jump fences, and we knew it really was time for them to go. It was hard for us to finally part with them. For the first few days, Kynan was always a bit disappointed that the cubs weren't there. I'm not sad about it. I'm hands-on with them every day at the zoo, and I do look back very fondly on the time that we had them. 4. Why did the author bring the tiger cubs home? A. To ensure their survival. B. To observe their differences. C. To teach them life skills. D. To let them play with his kids. 5. What do the underlined words “get up to mischief” mean in paragraph 3? A. Behave badly. B. Lose their way. C. Sleep soundly. D. Miss their mom. 6. What did the author think of raising the tiger cubs at home? A. Boring. B. Tiring. C. Costly. D. Risky. 7. Why did the author decide to send Spot and Stripe back to the zoo? A. They frightened the children. B. They became difficult to contain. C. They annoyed the neighbours. D. They started fighting each other. A 5. A 6. B 7. 根据第一段中“Globally, a third of Sumatran cubs in zoos don't make it to adulthood, so I decided to give them round-the-clock care at home. (在全球范围内,动物园里三分之一的苏门答腊老虎幼崽活不到成年,所以我决定在家里全天候照顾它们)”可知,作者把老虎幼崽带回家是为了确保他们的存活。故选A。 根据画线词上文“As they grew more mobile, we let them move freely around the house during the day, but when we were asleep we had to contain them in a large room, otherwise they'd ”(随着它们的活动越来越多,我们白天让它们在房子里自由活动,但当我们睡觉时,我们必须把它们关在一个大房间里,否则它们会)以及后文“We'd come down in the morning to find they'd turned the room upside down, and left it looking like a zoo.”(我们早上下楼时发现他们把房间弄得乱七八糟,让它看起来像个动物园。) 故选A。 根据倒数第三段中“Things quickly got very intense due to the huge amount of energy required to look after them. There were some tough times and I just felt extremely tired.(由于需要大量的精力来照顾它们,事情很快变得非常紧张。有一段艰难的日子,我只是觉得非常累)”可推知,作者在家里饲养小老虎需要大量精力照顾它,这让作者感觉非常疲惫,因此作者认为在家里养小老虎是累人的。故选B。 【7题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“When Spot and Stripe were four months old, they were learning how to open doors and jump fences, and we knew it really was time for them to go.(当Spot和Stripe四个月大的时候,他们正在学习如何开门和跳栅栏,我们知道是时候让他们离开了)”可知,作者决定把Spot 和Stripe送回动物园是因为他们变得难以控制。故选B。 C Researchers at the University of Waterloo are developing new technology that would free people with diabetes (糖尿病) from painful finger sticks to monitor their blood sugar. A team led by engineering professor George Shaker has combined radar and artificial intelligence(AI)to detect changes in glucose (葡萄糖) levels without the need to draw blood several times a day. The system under development uses the radar device to send high-frequency radio waves into liquids containing various levels of glucose and receive radio waves that are reflected back to it. Information on the reflected waves is then changed into digital data for analysis by machine-learning AI, developed by the researchers. The software is capable of detecting glucose changes based on more than 500 wave features or characteristics including how long it takes for them to return to the device. Initial tests with volunteers at the Research Institute for Aging in Waterloo achieved results that were 85 percent as accurate as traditional, invasive (穿刺式的) blood analysis. “The result was actually amazing,” says Shaker. “We have shown it is possible to use radar to look into blood to detect changes.” Next steps include enhancing the system to precisely quantify glucose levels and obtain results through the skin, which makes the process more challenging. The research team is also working with German hardware company Infineon to make the radar device smaller so that it is both low-cost and low-power. The data analyzed by AI is now sent wirelessly to computers, but the final aim is self-contained technology similar to the smartwatches that monitor heart rate. “I’m hoping we’ll see a wearable device on the market within the next five years,” Shaker says. “There are challenges, but the research has been going at a really good rate.” 8. What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about? A. The radar-reflected wave analysis process. B. The technical principle underlying the system. C. The machine-learning-powered glucose detection. D. The high-frequency wave transmission technique. 9. What do Shaker’s words in paragraph 5 suggest? A. The radar system’s practicality is proven B. The radar technology’s limitations are noticed. C. The volunteers’ test performance was highlighted. D. The traditional blood analysis’s accuracy is emphasized. 10. What does the follow-up study focus on? A. Developing smartwatches for AI analysis. B. Exploring low-cost AI and radar technology. C. Improving skin-based glucose quantification. D. Sending analyzed data to computers wirelessly. 11. What is Shaker’s attitude toward the research? A. Unclear. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Approving. 【答案】8 B 9. A 10. C 11. 根据第三段的“The system under development uses the radar device to send high-frequency radio waves into liquids containing various levels of glucose and receive radio waves that are reflected back to it. Juliet bid Romeo adieu (再见) for the evening with the words, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.” Sweet sorrow is an oxymoron. But this seeming contradiction is true in the context of relationships. Relationships are based on feelings, emotions, and passion. Deep friendships and loving relationships are measured by the level of emotional attachment. Emotions intensify over time. People spend time with the people they like. The more one person likes another person, the closer the relationship becomes. Each person in the relationship receives an emotional benefit from knowing the other person. Saying goodbye means separating from the people who make up a significant part of your emotional identity. Separation, even a temporary absence, from the people you have a deep emotional connection with can cause sorrow because you will no longer be able to enjoy their company. The sweet side of saying goodbye is the emotional fulfillment of being in a close relationship. The time spent together is emotionally rewarding, especially if that person is seen as a soulmate. Humans are social beings. We seek the love and comfort of other people. Loneliness devastates the human condition and leads to sadness. Sad people will do anything they can to find fulfilling relationships. Likewise, happy people will do anything they can to maintain or enhance relationships. Herein lies the essential point of the emotional problem. The more intense relationships become, the more devastating the emotional loss that is felt upon separation. The exhilaration of relationships cannot be truly measured without experiencing the overwhelming loss of a deep emotional connection. Enjoy the company of the person you are with as long as you can; knowing the pain you will feel at the end of the relationship is the true measure of the relationship. If it doesn’t hurt to say goodbye, perhaps it wasn’t worth saying hello. 12. Which of the word group can create the same effect as “sweet sorrow”? A. icy cold B. clicking sound C. deafening silence D. endless speech 13. What can we learn from paragraph 3? A. Saying goodbye is unavoidable in our daily life. B. The companion of close friends can lessen sorrow. C. A person’s identity is connected with relationship. D. Separation is the sorrowful part of saying goodbye. 14. What gives a person emotional satisfaction in social life? A. Making more communication with others. B. Building deep emotional connections with others. C. Comforting friends with love and intense feelings. D. Being a thoughtful person by standing in others’ shoes. 15. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Sweet sorrow is very common in close relationships. B. The pain of separation is the measure of relationships. C. Human beings are eager to get emotional fulfillment. D. Happiness is meaningless without sadness to compare it. 【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇议论文,通过莎翁戏剧著名台词“Parting is such sweet sorrow”引出对人际关系的讨论,阐述分离的痛苦是衡量感情的尺度。 【12题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段中“ Sweet sorrow is an oxymoron. I heard him say, “Yes, Miss Beisner,” and “I understand what you’re saying, Miss Beisner. I appreciate you sharing this information. We’ll see what we can do about the situation. Thank you for calling. Goodbye.” Miss Beisner was my first-grade teacher, and I loved her. I thought she felt the same about me, but now I was beginning to wonder. The tone of Dad’s voice, the redness in his cheeks, and his repeated clenching. And unclenching of fists made it pretty clear. This was not a warm and fuzzy good news-from-the-teacher call. As I was deciding whether I should lock myself in my bedroom for the rest of my life or run away from home, Dad hung up the phone. “Jacquie, come here and sit down. We need to talk.” Uh-oh. When Dad said, “We need to talk,” it meant he needed to talk, and I needed to listen. I shuffled (拖着脚走) over to the well-worn brown chair in the corner of the living room, plopped down, and waited to hear the nature of my crime. Dad told me that Miss Beisner thought I was bright but not working up to my ability. She said I had strong verbal skills but weak study habits. Translation: I never closed my mouth, and I seldom opened a book. Apparently, my failure to memorize the addition facts, or even attempt to, was more than she was willing to put up with. Hence, the telephone call. Dad ended our one-way conversation with a verbal outline for his plan of attack. Bubbles, our Toy Manchester Terrier, was going to teach me math. Silently, I thought, No way is any dumb dog going to teach me how to add, not even our beloved Bubbles. Out loud, I said, “How?” Dad summoned Bubbles from her bed near the stove and commanded her to sit. “Bubbles,” Dad said, “how much is five plus three?” Bubbles let out eight loud, crisp barks. I was incredulous (满腹狐疑的). I couldn’t understand how a dog could add, and I was more than a little embarrassed by the fact that the family dog was smarter than me. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: After that, I threw myself into math with newfound determination. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: One day, I asked Dad whether Bubbles really knew how to add. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文 After that, I threw myself into math with newfound determination. Instead of hanging out with my friends after school, I would perch at the kitchen table, textbooks splayed out before me, and practice addition and subtraction. I thought to myself, if Bubbles, a dog, could learn math, then surely, I could too. With each passing week, I could see the fruits of my labor. Occasionally, during our study sessions, Dad would call Bubbles over. She would bark out the correct answers to simple math problems — it was a unique, interactive way for me to assess my progress. I swelled with pride at my achievements, my parents were overjoyed, and Miss Beisner’s smile returned. One day, I asked Dad whether Bubbles really knew how to add. I couldn’t help but wonder if there was a trick or if it was all simply a coincidence. Dad, with a knowing smile, explained that Bubbles didn’t actually possess the ability to solve math problems. In reality, he had trained her to respond to certain cues. When he posed a math question, he would subtly tap his foot a certain number of times, prompting Bubbles to bark the corresponding number. Despite the initial disappointment, I realized that it was my own effort and perseverance that led to my improvement in math. My grades continued on an upward path. Bubbles couldn’t add, subtract, multiply or divide, but she sure could teach. 词汇激活 行为类 ①闲逛:hanging out/hanging around/hanging about ②评估:assess/evaluate ③具备,拥有:possess/have/ be equipped with 情绪类 ①欣喜若狂:overjoyed/rapturous/ecstatic ②失望:disappointment/despair 【点睛】[高分句型1]When he posed a math question, he would subtly tap his foot a certain number of times, prompting Bubbles to bark the corresponding number.(运用了when引导的时间状语从句以及非谓语动词中的现在分词作状语) [高分句型2]Despite the initial disappointment, I realized that it was my own effort and perseverance that led to my improvement in math. B I have worked as a keeper at the National Zoo, Paris for 11 years. C Researchers at the University of Waterloo are developing new technology that would free people with diabetes (糖尿病) from painful finger sticks to monitor their blood sugar. A icy cold B. clicking sound C. deafening silence D. endless speech 13. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 A recent study suggests that reading paper books does make you smarter. While all reading benefits the brain, particularly at a young age, physical books offer the most advantages.Students who read paper books scored approximately 2.5 years ahead of those who didn’t read, whereas digital readers scored just under a year ahead ____16____ A previous study has consistently shown that reading comprehension is better with paper books compared to digital reading. ____17____Even in areas where digital reading is more common, students who read paper books demonstrate a better understanding of the material. Translation: I never closed my mouth and I seldom opened a book. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
