As Chinese New Year is around the corner, some foreign readers share their tips on how to spend the festival here in China.
Avoid traveling during the holidays.
It is the golden rule that I have followed for years, especially during Spring Festival as the traffic is heavy. Also, the weather here is much colder than that of my hometown Sydney, Australia.
Enjoy the dinner on New Year’s Eve with Chinese families.
The Chinese food is delicious. But it’s not the reason I always spend Spring Festival with a Chinese family. In fact, I like that mainly because I can learn more about Chinese culture. The Chinese people are friendly and I really thank them for their ccompany (陪伴) when my family are thousands of miles away from me.
Watch the Spring Festival Gala (春晚).
Many people in Singapore understand Chinese, but I don’t. However, the show is never boring. I am quite fascinated by it. The CCTV Spring Festival Gala is one of the most amazing TV shows from an artistic point of view.
Set off fireworks.
I really love to watch them because they remind me of happy time when my father set off fireworks for me on Thanksgiving Day. Although the big bangs often make me scared and I’ve never set off fireworks myself, they really make me feel so excited and happy! I’ve never seen so many fireworks in my life!

Mother’s Day
There are a number of special days of the year that are celebrated in different countries. The origins (起源) of most of these days are unknown. They were certainly not created by individual people. However, other days especially those celebrated in Western countries—often owe (归功于) their origins to a particular person. One of the most popular is Mother’s Day.
Mothers have always been highly regarded in all cultures. The ancient Romans had a festival known as Hilaria, during which children took presents to the temple of the “Mother of the Gods”. The Christian Church adopted (采用) this idea and called it Mothering Sunday. However, this custom was gradually forgotten, and almost disappeared by the end of the 19th century.
Born in 1864 in Virginia, USA, Anna Jarvis was a schoolteacher and believed that children should show gratitude (感激) to their mothers for all their love and care. Encouraged by a friend, she wrote to thousands of important people and asked them to support her idea—a special day of the year for thanking mothers.
In 1910, the Governor of West Virginia introduced Mother’s Day in that state. The date chosen was May 10—the second Sunday in May, which is still observed in America today. This date was chosen because May 10 was the date on which in 1908 Anna Jarvis’s mother died. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made May 10 the official date for Mother’s Day all over the United States.
Soon after that, there was a Mother’s Day International Association and the custom began to be adopted in many countries of the world.
24.Hilaria was a festival in ________.
A.West Virginia B.the United States C.ancient Rome
25.Why was May 10 the date for Mother’s Day?
A.Because the Governor of West Virginia introduced the day.
B.Because it was the second Sunday in May.
C.Because Anna Jarvis’s mother died on May 10, 1908.
26.The underlined word “observed” in Paragraph 4 most probably means ________.
A.followed B.watched C.ruled

根据“The date chosen was May 10—the second Sunday in May, Which is still observed in America today.” 故选A。

Do you often compare yourself with other people? Are you happy when you compare yourself with your friend? Comparisons can help to make decisions but they can also pull you into a comparison (陷阱).
Whether it’s the number of goals you’ve scored at football or how many books you’ve read, to compare yourself with someone else. Scientists say it helps humans learn from each other, live happily together and achieve more. Although comparing can be good for you, it’s not always helpful and you can find yourself stuck in a comparison trap. This is when you always compare yourself with others and base (基于) your feelings on how well they seem to be doing.
Becky is a child therapist (someone who helps children understand their feelings). She tells The Week Junior that comparisons can make us feel good and bad about ourselves. “Comparing up” means seeing someone doing better than you and using that to push yourself and try harder. However, she says, “Sometimes it can make you feel rubbish about yourself and knock your confidence.” “Comparing down” is when you see someone who seems like they’re not doing as well as you. “This might make you feel you’re doing well,” says Becky, “but it can also stop you wanting to improve.”
If your feelings depend on what other people are doing, spend time with friends who make you confident, but not compare yourself with them,” suggests Becky. Find some people that make you laugh or show you lovely places. Finally, pay attention to your own success and how you can improve. “The best person you can compete with is yourself,” says Becky.
28.How does the writer start to introduce the topic in Paragraph 1?
A.By telling stories B.By asking questions C.By giving examples
29.What does the underlined word “rubbish” mean?
A.excited B.proud C.terrible
30.According to Becky, what might happen when you “compare down”?
A.You will feel more confident and happy about yourself.
B.It makes you feel good but also stops you from getting better.
C.Comparing down is the best way to push yourself to try harder.
31.What’s the main purpose of the text?
A.To encourage readers to push themselves hard.
B.To help readers build up their self confidence
C.To advise readers to make healthy comparisons
【答案】28.B 29.C 30.B 31.C

根据第一段中“Do you often compare yourself with other people? Are you happy when you compare yourself your friend?”
根据第三段中“However, she says, ‘Sometimes it can make you feel rubbish about yourself and knock your confidence.’”
根据第三段中“‘Comparing down’ is when you see someone who seems like they’re not doing as well as you. ‘This might make you feel you’ re doing well,’ says Becky, ‘but it can also stop you wanting to improve.’”
“I don’t like my parents. They always tell me I should do this, and should not do that, which sometimes makes me angry,” said Zhang Hua, a middle school student in Guangzhou. Do you have the same problem? Perhaps your parents had the same problem when they were your age long ago. 32
One of the biggest things is when someone becomes a parent, he/she likes worrying about things. They worry about everything about you, from the time you were born. They do a lot for you, though something would make you angry, because they care about you and worry about you. 33 All these things are part of your life. They want you to grow up healthily and happily.
So how can you make things easier on yourself? It’s easier than you think. Just make sure your parents know what you’re doing. Get them to know your friends. Phone if you stay somewhere else so that your parents don’t call every hospital in the phone book looking for your body. Say sorry to them when you make mistakes. 34 Talk about your ideas with them. They may talk about theirs with you.
35 They are still practicing being parents and need help you can give them. Someday, when you become a parent, they may be able to help you how to get on with your children.
A.Take responsibility (责任) for what you have done.
B.Why do parents worry about their children so much?
C.Why does it seem that some parents are not so friendly in their children’s eyes?
D.Most of all, try to think about why your parents do this or do that.

33.根据“because they care about you and worry about you.”及“All these things are part of your life.”
34.根据“Say sorry to them when you make mistakes.” 故选A。
35.根据“They are still practicing being parents and need help you can give them.”

根据后文“It can help us grow up rapidly”,可知失败能帮助我们快速成长,是有帮助的,故选C。
made制造、犯(错误);disappeared消失;found找到。根据前文“the same mistake”,可知“make a mistake”是固定搭配,此处用被动语态“be made”,故选A。
根据后文“Some win, while some lose”,可知比赛中有人赢有人输,只有一个赢家,故选A。
根据前文“The more active”,可知此处是“the more... the more...”
In a word总之;In the way妨碍、挡道;In that case既然那样。根据后文“being a good loser will help us to be better in life”,可知此处是对全文的总结,故选A。

The Ministry of Education has expressed support 46 PE teachers becoming class teachers. Wang Dengfeng, one of the ministry’s officials, said, “All teachers can take class teacher positions, no matter 47 subject they teach.”
Shao Changfeng, headmaster of a middle school in Nanjing, said, “Most parents don’t care about students’ physical education because China’s education system is more exam-oriented (应试的). They think 48 harder you study, the higher scores you can get and the more successful you 49 (be) in the future. So they would like to see teachers from the so-called main subjects—Chinese, math and English become class teachers.”
However, five out of eight PE teachers at this middle school are class teachers. According to Shao, at first, many parents were against the action. They 50 (suppose) it would lower the students’ scores in exams. But soon they found that some PE teachers’ classes could achieve 51 (good) results than those taught by Chinese, math or English teachers.
In Shao’s opinion, more PE teachers should 52 (allow) to become class teachers. “PE teachers have more time 53 (manage) classes because they are not as busy as those who teach Chinese, math or English. They are often more energetic. What’s more, PE teachers are good at teaching students how to work with others and how to face failure, which are important 54 (skill) they can learn from doing sports,” said Shao 55 (serious).
46.for 47.what 48.the 49.will be 50.supposed 51.better 52.be allowed 53.to manage 54.skills 55.seriously
“express support for...” 故填for。
“no matter what”引导让步状语从句,意为“不管什么”,此处修饰“subject”,所以填“what”。故填what。
故填the。
根据“in the future”可知,句子用一般将来时,结构为“will+动词原形”,所以填“will be”。故填will be。
故填be allowed。
“have time to do sth.” 故填to manage。

Each family has its own set of rules that guide the behaviors and actions of its members. However, people hold different opinions on family rules. Here are some of their ideas.
Agree
Family rules help to create good order within my family. For example, I have made a set bedtime rule for my children. The purpose of doing this is to make sure that children get enough sleep, which is important for their development. Regular mealtimes also mean healthy eating habits and family communication.
—Fiona’s dad
Family rules can teach me to be responsible for myself. Whether I’m doing homework, cleaning my room, or taking care of my own things, I follow the rule “Finish your own tasks on time”. This is an important skill for my later life.
—Peter
Disagree
Too many rules can harm a child’s creativity. For example, if a child is always told what to wear or how to behave well, they may not be able to voice their own opinions.
—Binbin
Rules cause family troubles. I used to have trouble getting along with my son because I didn’t allow him to hang out with his friends on weekends. But now he is allowed to make his own decisions, which helps him to be more independent and brings us a better relationship.

21.Who is from Australia?
A.Caroline. B.Billy. C.Jack.
22.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Billy doesn’t like traveling during Spring Festival.
B.Angela feels excited and happy when she sets off fireworks.
C.Jack is good at Chinese and thinks the CCTV Spring Festival is amazing.

27.The passage is mainly about ________.
A.who brought up Mother’s Day
B.how Mother’s Day came about
C.how people celebrate Mother’s Day
C

E.They worry about your choice of friends, the food you eat, your work at school, how much sleep you get, etc.
