In the August of 761 AD, a cold autumn wind blew down a cottage with heavy rain, causing a poet who experienced a hard life to write the following verse, “Could I get mansions covering ten thousand miles, I'd house all scholars poor and make them beam with smiles. In wind and rain these mansions would stand like mountains high.”
The verse is from the poem My Cottage Unroofed by Autumn Gales by Poet Sage Du Fu. The cottage in the poem can still be visited today in Chengdu as a museum to commemorate(纪念) this great poet. China's Great Wall is an iconic cultural landmark that has stood for millennia. But the 13,000-mile-long structure is also at risk of disappearing because of natural erosion(侵蚀).
Now, scientists have discovered that some parts of the wall are better protected from the elements than others.
Moss, lichen and cyanobacteria have created a layer of“biocrusts” on some sections of the wall, according to a study published in the journal Science Advances. In addition to strengthening the wall, the biocrusts shield it from wind and water. The“living cover” also insulates (隔离) the wall from temperature changes, the researchers report.
* Some sections of the Great Wall were built using rammed earth (夯土), a process that involves compacting natural materials like gravel and soil to create sturdy structures. Those materials also provided an ideal habitat for organisms to grow—— and over time, they created a protective biocrust layer atop the rammed earth.
Scientists in China wanted to better understand the wall's biocrusts, so they took samples from a roughly300-mile-long section. When they analyzed the samples, they found that 67 percent of the area they studied was covered in biocrusts. They also ran a series of experiments to compare the bare and biocrust-covered samples. The biocrust-covered sections were found to be less porous(多孔的), and they held up better in tests measuring their strength and stability. Some biocrust samples were three times stronger than the bare rammed earth samples.
The new research could help inform conservation strategies for the Great Wall and other heritage structures created from rammed earth. Some conservationists have speculated that biocrusts may cause historic structures to deteriorate more quickly, but this study suggests otherwise. Instead, biocrusts helpfully combine the protective functions of several conventional measures into one nature-based, cost-effective, eco-friendly and long-lasting strategy.
1. How do biocrusts influence the Great Wall according to the study?
A. They make its surface softer and damper.
B. They improve its water-holding capacity.
C. They balance the temperature of its surface.
D. They provide an ideal habitat for small creatures.
2. How did the scientists reach findings?
A. By explaining causes. B. By giving a definition.
C. By collecting relevant data. D. By making a comparison.
3. What does the author want to stress in the last paragraph?
A. The significance of the research. B. The future focus of the research.
C. The probable challenge of the research. D. The existing background of the research.
4 Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Great Wall Faces Natural Erosion
B. The Great Wall: An Iconic Cultural Landmark
C. Biocrusts: A Living Cover of the Great Wall
D. Biocrusts Protect the Great Wall from Erosion

The cottage in the poem can still be visited today in Chengdu as a museum to commemorate this great poet.
根据第二段画线词所在句中的 the transitional time 以及 from the… to the decline可推知,pinnacle的词义与 decline相反。
根据第四段中的 a foreign section which holds books with his poems in different languages可知,外国游客在杜甫草堂有机会看到被翻译成他们自己语言的杜甫诗作。

Some sections of the Great Wall were built using rammed earth, a process that involves compacting natural materials like gravel and soil to create sturdy structures.
