Chinese historians have confirmed the identity of the Chinese refugee whom John Rabe helped escort (护送) out of Nanjing, Jiangsu province, in 1938 as Huang Guanghan, a former squadron leader in China’s early air force. The identification resolves a decades-old question surrounding the name “Kwang Han-Hwang” recorded in The Diaries of John Rabe.
Researchers announced the conclusion after cross-checking military records, family memoirs (回忆录), and wartime publications.
Huang, who had shot down several Japanese aircraft during the Battle of Shanghai, was severely injured in November 1937 and later hid in Nanjing with assistance from George Fitch, who worked at the Safety Zone. He later moved to Rabe’s place.
Rabe sheltered him before disguising him as a household servant and escorting him out of the city on Feb 23, 1938, to Hong Kong.
For years, “Kwang Han-Hwang” was mistranslated due to confusion over the name’s proper Chinese form. The breakthrough came when historian Zhang Yuanqing found a 1937 photograph in a collection documenting (记载) the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-1945), identifying a pilot as “Hwang Kwang-han”, which matched the diary’s spelling with only the name order reversed (颠倒的).
Huang’s elder brother wrote in his book that after the fall of Nanjing, Huang Guanghan “entered the Nanjing Safety Zone for refugees” and later “proceeded to Hong Kong for medical treatment”. This aligns (吻合,一致) with relevant details recorded in The Diaries of John Rabe.
Huang Shijun, Huang Guanghan’s son, told Yangtze Evening News his father had told him of the story. His elder sister also recalled that “our father sent a birthday card to John Rabe every year”.
Zhang Sheng, president of the Research Association for the History of the Nanjing Massacre (大屠杀) by Japanese Invaders, said that the confirmation of Huang Guanghan’s identity highlights Rabe’s extraordinary courage and humanitarian spirit, demonstrates the fearless protection provided by international friends to Chinese military personnel and civilians during the Nanjing Massacre, and supplements valuable details of the history of the Chinese air force’s resistance against Japanese aggression.
4. What was the key breakthrough in confirming Kwang Han-Hwang as Huang Guanghan?
A. A 1937 record of Huang’s birthday cards to Rabe.
B. A photo with a name matching the diary’s (except order).
C. Military records related to Huang Guanghan.
D. Fitch’s memoirs of a pilot in the Safety Zone.
5. What can we infer from the passage about Huang Guanghan and John Rabe?
A. They kept a long grateful relationship.
B. Rabe was Huang’s military comrade.
C. Huang became Rabe’s servant after the war.
D. Rabe helped Huang for military purposes.
6. What does the confirmation of Huang’s identity reflect?
A. Rabe’s support for China’s military resistance.
B. The great value of family memoirs in history research.
C. International humanitarian aid during the Nanjing Massacre.
D. The accuracy of all records in The Diaries of John Rabe.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Rabe’s contributions to saving refugees. B. Identifying Huang as the refugee in Rabe’s diary.
C. Huang’s heroic deeds as a pilot. D. The historical value of Rabe’s diaries.

Ever wondered how social media platforms decide how to fill our feeds? They use algorithms (算法), of course, but how do these algorithms work? In 2021, Frances Haugen, a Facebook product manager secretly took ten thousand pages of documents and internal messages out of Facebook headquarters. She leaked these to a handful of media outlets. A lot of stories soon ran, largely focusing on the most alarming, attention-grabbing secrets.
It turns out that Facebook engineers have assigned a point value to each type of engagement users can perform on a post (liking, commenting, resharing, etc.). Facebook’s algorithm calculates a personalized score for each post to determine its place in the feed. This score is got by multiplying the probability you’ll perform each engagement — likes, loves, etc. — by its pre-assigned point value, then summing these products. Posts are then ranked from highest to lowest score, creating your tailored feed. Then the magic formula is: Score=Vlike×Plike+Vlove×Plove+Vangry×Pangry+Vcomment×Pcomment+Vshare×Pshare.
The idea is that the algorithm wants to surface the posts you’re most likely to engage with. Have you ever seen a TikTok video with overlaid text saying something like “You won’t believe what happens,” or “You’ve gotta watch till the end?” Some people post videos where literally nothing happens, but they trick you into watching multiple times, thereby winning even more expected seconds. Comments and seconds watched, no matter what quality and kind, tell TikTok’s algorithm one thing: “Give me more videos like this.”
Social media algorithms bring the things we engage with closer and closer. Once we start clicking the social media, we’re going to be served up a lot more of it. It’s a cruel cycle that can quickly turn our feeds into endless streams of digital trash. Knowing how and why this cycle happens is the first step to stop it. Just remember: the tech companies choose the Vs in the social media formula, but the Ps are shaped by your actions online.
8. What does the underlined part in paragraph 1 indicate?
A. The social media were affected. B. The leak went viral immediately.
C. The manager hated Facebook a lot. D. The secret was an eye-catching event.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Why Facebook designed a formula. B. How Facebook determines our feeds.
C. How the formula was created carefully. D. Why users have to be cautious about posts.
10. What does the author intend to tell us with the TikTok example?
A. Algorithms are smart to track everything.
B. Even unintentional watch can tell about our likes.
C. Some people will do everything to attract attention.
D. TikTok has more powerful algorithms than Facebook.
11. What does the author advise us to do?
A. Focus on the positive videos only. B. Engage less with the content we hate.
C. Comment more on what we appreciate. D. Mind our responses to what is fed to us.
D
Are you happy? What does occur to me is that there is more to life than simply the pursuit of happiness.
Imagine that scientists have invented a machine that can be hooked (钩) up to your brain so that it can give you every pleasurable experience you could ever want. These scientists have designed it so that you can’t distinguish between those pleasurable feelings you have yourself and those that come from the machine, making you blessedly unaware you are actually floating in a tank, with electrodes (电极) in your brain.
So, offered the chance to be hooked up to the machine for the rest of your life, would you choose the machine or real life? The vast majority of people would choose real life, despite some discomfort, sorrow, and upset. This thought-experiment aimed to show that there is something other than pure pleasure that gives our lives meaning. As humans, we need contrast in our emotions - the dark to make the light much brighter for us.
Was Michelangelo happy when he was painting the Sistine Chapel? No one really knows, but he was probably quite frustrated and angry at times as well as bored, lonely and tired. He might have neck pain for most of it from looking up to paint for hours. But he didn’t do it to feel happy. It gave him a strong sense of purpose, meaning and accomplishment. Surely this is what is at the heart of what drives us.
What’s also interesting is that it’s hard to say whether we really are happy or not. A psychiatry professor said that happiness is often experienced in retrospect — we look back on a time of our lives, an event or a moment and recall it with happiness. When we say we were happy in a relationship, for example, what we often mean is that recalling that relationship gives us happiness now.
12. What is the function of the machine mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. Creating desired pleasure. B. Boosting your brain power.
C. Detecting the surroundings. D. Helping you identify feelings.
13. Why does the author mention Michelangelo and his creation?
A. To prove the impact of creativity.
B. To recognize his contribution to art.
C. To inspire other artists to work harder.
D. To show the importance of emotional contrast.
14. What does the underlined word “retrospect” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. A review. B. A procedure. C. A condition. D. A scene.
15. What does the author intend to convey in the passage?
A. Life highlights hope. B. Life goes beyond happiness.
C. Life calls for rapid action. D. Life reflects your thoughts.

Every time we went to Lehman’s store, I would rush straight to the same shelf. There it was: a brown little guy with a large nose that fit perfectly over my shoulder. I hugged the brown stuffed aardvark (土豚) doll tightly and whispered, “Hi, Artie.”
Last week, my mother finally noticed. “Why do you always disappear?” she asked at checkout. “Next time, your brother is going with you.”
Oh, no! My brother, Rich, was going to accompany me into the store. He would watch me and report everything to our mother.
Anyway, I wasn’t going to give up seeing my precious Artie. So, when Rich and I walked into the store together, I advised him to get the daily groceries, since he was older. He agreed but said I shouldn’t go off to look at the cosmetics (化妆品), as I wasn’t allowed to wear them yet.
He needn’t have worried about that; I was already heading toward Artie. There it was, awaiting me. I grabbed it and hugged it tightly. Just then, I heard my brother: “What in the world are you doing?”
“This is Artie,” I said. “I hug it every single time I come here. Don’t tell Mom. I know we can’t afford it, and I hope it doesn’t get sold, because I just love this little guy.”
The look on Rich’s face was unreadable, but I knew deep down that he wasn’t going to make fun of me. In fact, a few times when he accompanied me to the store, he said, “Go on and hug your ugly animal, if it’s still there, and I’ll get the groceries.”
One day before Thanksgiving Day, Rich was working with Dad somewhere, so Mom took me to Lehman’s but waited outside. “You go in by yourself,” she said. “My legs are tired today. Just don’t take forever, okay?”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

B 5. A 6. C 7. B

根据第五段中的“The breakthrough came when historian Zhang Yuanqing found a 1937 photograph in a collection documenting (记载) the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-1945), identifying a pilot as “Hwang Kwang-han”, which matched the diary’s spelling with only the name order reversed (颠倒的).(突破性进展出现在历史学家张元庆在一组记录抗日战争(1931-1945)的影像资料中发现了一张1937年的照片,照片中一名飞行员被标注为“Hwang Kwang-han”,与日记中的拼写完全一致,只是姓名顺序相反)”可知,确认身份的关键突破是一张姓名与日记记录(仅顺序不同)匹配的照片。
根据第七段中的“His elder sister also recalled that “our father sent a birthday card to John Rabe every year”.(他的姐姐还回忆说:“我们的父亲每年都会给约翰·拉贝寄生日贺卡”)”可推知,黄光汉与拉贝保持着长期的感恩关系。故选A项。
根据最后一段“Zhang Sheng, president of the Research Association for the History of the Nanjing Massacre (大屠杀) by Japanese Invaders, said that the confirmation of Huang Guanghan’s identity highlights Rabe’s extraordinary courage and humanitarian spirit, demonstrates the fearless protection provided by international friends to Chinese military personnel and civilians during the Nanjing Massacre, and supplements valuable details of the history of the Chinese air force’s resistance against Japanese aggression.(“侵华日军南京大屠杀历史研究会”会长张生表示,黄光汉身份的确认,彰显了拉贝非凡的勇气和人道主义精神,展示了国际友人在南京大屠杀中对中国军人和平民的无畏保护,为中国空军抗日历史增添了宝贵的细节)”可推知,身份确认的核心意义之一是印证了南京大屠杀期间国际友人的人道主义援助。故选C项。

D 9. B 10. B 11. D
根据划线词上文“In 2021, Frances Haugen, a Facebook product manager secretly took ten thousand pages of documents and internal messages out of Facebook headquarters. She leaked these to a handful of media outlets.(2021年,Facebook的产品经理弗朗西斯·哈根秘密从公司总部获取了一万页的文件和内部消息。她将这些内容泄露给了几家媒体机构)”以及后文“largely focusing on the most alarming, attention-grabbing secrets.(主要聚焦于那些最令人震惊、最引人注目的秘密)”可知,秘密泄露,成为了一个引人注目的事件。第一段中划线部分所表达的意思是这个秘密是一个引人注目的事件。故选D。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“It turns out that Facebook engineers have assigned a point value to each type of engagement users can perform on a post (liking, commenting, resharing, etc.). Then the magic formula is: Score=Vlike×Plike+Vlove×Plove+Vangry×Pangry+Vcomment×Pcomment+Vshare×Pshare.(事实证明,Facebook的工程师已经为用户在帖子上可以进行的每种互动行为(点赞、评论、转发等)赋予了相应的分值。
根据倒数第二段“Some people post videos where literally nothing happens, but they trick you into watching multiple times, thereby winning even more expected seconds. Comments and seconds watched, no matter what quality and kind, tell TikTok’s algorithm one thing: “Give me more videos like this.”(有些人在网上发布的视频内容其实毫无情节可言,但他们却设法让你反复观看,这样一来就能获得更多的预期观看时间。无论是评论还是观看秒数,无论其质量如何、内容为何,都向TikTok的算法传达了一个信息:“给我更多像这样的视频。”)”可知,作者通过TikTok这个例子想要告诉我们无意识的观看行为也能反映出我们的喜好。故选B。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Knowing how and why this cycle happens is the first step to stop it. Just remember: the tech companies choose the Vs in the social media formula, but the Ps are shaped by your actions online.(了解这个循环是如何发生以及为何会发生是阻止它的第一步。只需记住:科技公司决定了社交媒体公式中的“V”项,但“P”项则由你的在线行为所塑造)”可知,作者建议我们要留意自己对所接收信息的反应。故选D。

A 13. D 14. A 15. B
根据第二段中“Imagine that scientists have invented a machine that can be hooked (钩) up to your brain so that it can give you every pleasurable experience you could ever want. These scientists have designed it so that you can’t distinguish between those pleasurable feelings you have yourself and those that come from the machine, making you blessedly unaware you are actually floating in a tank, with electrodes (电极) in your brain. (想象一下,科学家发明了一种机器,可以连接到你的大脑,这样它就可以给你任何你想要的愉快体验。这些科学家已经设计好了,这样你就无法区分你自己的愉悦感觉和那些来自机器的愉悦感觉,让你没有意识到你实际上是漂浮在一个装有电极的水箱里。)”可知,本段提到的机器的功能是创造想要的快乐。故选A项。
根据第三段“This thought-experiment aimed to show that there is something other than pure pleasure that gives our lives meaning. As humans, we need contrast in our emotions - the dark to make the light much brighter for us. (这个思想实验旨在表明,除了纯粹的快乐之外,还有其他东西赋予我们生活的意义。作为人类,我们需要情感上的对比——黑暗让光明对我们更亮。)”和第四段中“Was Michelangelo happy when he was painting the Sistine Chapel? No one really knows, but he was probably quite frustrated and angry at times as well as bored, lonely and tired. He might have neck pain for most of it from looking up to paint for hours. But he didn’t do it to feel happy. It gave him a strong sense of purpose, meaning and accomplishment. Surely this is what is at the heart of what drives us.
根据划线词句前文“A psychiatry professor said that happiness is often experienced in (一位精神病学教授说,幸福往往是在……中体验到的)”和后句“we look back on a time of our lives, an event or a moment and recall it with happiness (我们回顾生活中的一段时间、一件事或一个时刻,并带着幸福回忆起来。)” 故选A项。
根据第一段中“Are you happy? What does occur to me is that there is more to life than simply the pursuit of happiness. (你幸福吗?我真正想到的是,生活不仅仅是追求幸福。)”可知,作者想在文章中表达的是生活不仅仅是幸福。故选B项。

【16题详解】
上文“According to a 2024 attention study by King’s College London, 49% of the UK public are experiencing ‘popcorn (爆米花) brain’, a mental state featuring divided attention and wandering thoughts. (根据伦敦国王学院2024年的一项注意力研究,49%的英国公众正经历“爆米花大脑”,这种精神状态的特点是注意力分散、思绪飘忽。)”定义了“爆米花大脑”并说明其高发率,下文“In response to the findings, psychologist Tina Chummun gives her top tips. (针对这些发现,心理学家蒂娜·丘蒙给出了她的顶级建议。)”引出解决建议。F项“他们感觉自己的注意力不太集中,深度思考也更少见了。”承接上文,“they”指代前文“49% of the UK public”,“注意力不太集中”“深度思考少见”是对“注意力分散、思绪飘忽”的进一步阐释,让读者更清晰理解“爆米花大脑”的表现,衔接自然。故选F。
【17题详解】
上文“Adopt the mind map method. To manage a distracted (分心的) mind, write down everything, like appointments, worries and to-dos, without organizing it initially. Once everything is on paper, group these into life areas like work or emotional wellbeing. (采用思维导图法。为了管理分心的大脑,先把所有事情都写下来,比如约会、担忧和待办事项,一开始不用整理。一旦所有事情都写在纸上,就把它们归类到工作、情感健康等生活领域。)”详细介绍了思维导图法的前两个步骤——记录和归类,下文“This creates order and gives your brain permission to concentrate. (这能建立秩序,让你的大脑可以集中注意力。)”说明该方法的效果。E项“然后问问自己:现在什么重要,什么可以等一等?”作为思维导图法的第三步,承接前文的“记录和归类”流程,通过设问筛选优先级,进而实现下文“建立秩序、集中注意力”的效果,逻辑连贯。故选E。
【18题详解】
上文“Every time you feel your thoughts wandering, give yourself three seconds — breathe in, name what you’re feeling, and redirect your focus. (每次你感觉思绪飘忽时,给自己三秒钟——吸气,说出你的感受,然后重新集中注意力。)”介绍了思绪回归训练的具体操作,下文“By doing so, you may turn down the heat when your brain is working overtime.”
上文“Minimizing tech is also the key to getting back on track in your daily life. A full digital withdrawal is unrealistic. 【答案】Dear Alex,
I’m glad to share my views on whether AI is a helpful study partner or a source of distraction. In my opinion, AI is a valuable study companion when used properly.
Last semester, I struggled with English writing. Grammar mistakes and poor logical flow always frustrated me. Then I started using an AI tool. It not only pointed out my grammatical errors but also suggested more precise expressions and coherent structures.
However, AI can be distracting if we rely on it blindly. But as long as we treat AI as a helper rather than a replacement, it can greatly boost our study efficiency.
Hope my experience helps with your debate!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
I rushed straight to Artie’s shelf, but it was gone.

On Thanksgiving Day, as we were allowed to open one present, Rich walked up.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I rushed straight to Artie’s shelf, but it was gone. My heart dropped and panic surged through me. I searched up and down each aisle, my hopes fading with every empty spot. A kind clerk who noticed my distress said gently, “That aardvark doll was sold yesterday.” Tears blurred my vision. How could Artie be gone? Heartbroken, I stumbled out of the store, forcing a smile to Mom who was waiting for me outside. “Is everything alright?” Mom asked. “Nothing much,” I mumbled, hiding my trembling lip.
On Thanksgiving Day, as we were allowed to open one present, Rich walked up. He held out a small, clumsily wrapped box. “It’s for you,” he whispered. With surprise and curiosity, I carefully unwrapped it, and there lay Artie! I gasped, speechless with emotion. Rich grinned, “I bought him with all my savings. Now he’s yours forever.” Overwhelmed with joy, I hugged him tightly, with tears streaming down my cheeks. It wasn’t just a stuffed aardvark doll, but a gift of pure love from my family. It was the best Thanksgiving gift forever.
