Hoop Rolling at Wellesley College This allwomen’s college tradition was originally held on May Day, but it’s now held in April. The purpose is to allow students to essentially leave all their worries behind and just participate in some fun games outdoors. B To stay healthy and fit, Chinese students do group exercises every day at school. Most of you probably do the same set of exercises. But some school exercises have grown popular online because of their local and innovative (创新的) designs. Let’s check one of them out! Singing in Sichuan dialects (方言) with energetic movements and unique maskchanging is not just a Sichuan Opera performance. It’s the daily exercise for students of Mianyang Foreign Languages Experimental School in Sichuan Province. “Sichuan Opera is a local opera, and it is now facing a gap in inheritance (遗产继承). Therefore, we worked with the Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center of Mianyang to create a simple and easytolearn Sichuan Opera exercise,” said Shen Junhua, who is in charge of organising the school’s exercise between classes. According to Shen, this new type of exercise has been practiced since 2017 and has been popular among students. When students enter the school, they will spend several weeks practicing it. At present, almost all of the students and teachers have mastered it. “In fact, we had hardly heard of Sichuan Opera before teachers taught us how to do the Sichuan Opera exercise,” said Li Yangwen, 14, an eighth grade student who also joined the school's Sichuan Opera club out of interest. “It’s very different from normal exercises. After practicing it, we found it very beautiful and became interested in it. Now, almost all of the students look forward to our daily exercise time and feel excited to do it.” “By combining opera with the daily exercise, the daily class activity allows students to understand Sichuan Opera's culture,” Shen said. After years of continuous efforts to spread the seeds of traditional culture, the younger people will finally catch on. 24.Why does the school create this new kind of exercise? A.To teach students new skills. B.To enrich the school activities. C.To set up a Sichuan Opera club. D.To inherit the traditional culture. 25.What can be inferred about the Sichuan Opera exercise from Li Yangwen’s words? A. It makes students love the daily exercise. B.Perform. C. Grow. D.Revise. 27.What is the text mainly about? A.An exercise combined with culture. B.A new type of opera. C.The development of opera. D.The influence of Sichuan Opera. C A typical child plays many roles, such as friend, neighbor, son or daughter. Simply reminding children of that fact can lead to better problemsolving and more flexible (灵活的) thinking, according to a new research from Duke University. “This is some of the first research on reminding kids about their many roles,” said lead author Sarah Gaither, a professor at Duke. “Such reminders improve their problemsolving skills and how flexibly they see their social worlds.” In one experiment, Gaither and her workmates looked at 196 children, aged 6 and 7. All were native English speakers. The first group of children was reminded of their various identities, such as son, daughter, reader or helper. A second group of children was reminded of their many physical features. The rest of the children were reminded of other children’s many roles, not their own. All the children solved many tasks. The first group of children showed stronger problemsolving and creative thinking skills. For example, when shown pictures of a bear looking at a honeyfilled beehive (蜂巢) high up in a tree, these children had more creative ideas for how the bear might get the honey, such as turning over a bowl as a stool (凳子). The second group of children also showed more flexible thinking about social groupings. When asked to group different photos of faces, they suggested many ways to do so. For example, they identified smiling faces vs unsmiling ones, and old vs young faces. The other children mainly grouped people’s faces by race and gender. “We often only think about ourselves in connection with one important group at a time,” said Christopher Marlowe, a schoolmaster in Durham, North Carolina. “When we remind kids that they have various identities, they think more and remember that there are many other groups. They are more openminded.” 28.Who is Sarah Gaither? A.A reader. B.A professor. C.A reporter. D.A schoolmaster. 29.What can we learn from the experiment? A.The research was intended for people of all ages. B.The first group was reminded of various identities. C.Children in the second group are the most creative. D.All tasks were solved by the other children. 30.Why are photos of a bear talked about in Paragraph 4? A.To remind children of childhood. B.To make children more creative. C.To show the result of the research. D.To inform children of wildlife protection. 31.What’s Christopher’s attitude to the new research? A.Critical. B.Unclear. C.Positive. D.Doubtful. D Many companies are betting big that electronic book readers will be one of the main ways people read long-form text in the future. However, such products will succeed only if the reading experience is much better than that of reading printed books. Various types of tablets ought to do better than desktop computers because they offer higher-resolution screens and a more comfortable reading posture. But are tablets as good as printed books? To find out, we conducted a readability study of people reading fiction on the two famous tablets: Apple's iPad (first-generation) and Amazon's Kindle 2. We ran a within-subjects study, testing each user on all 4 reading conditions — printed book, PC, iPad, and Kindle. On each device, we asked each user to read a short story by Ernest Hemingway. We picked Hemingway because his work is pleasant to read, and yet not so complicated that it would be above the heads of users. On average, the stories took 17 minutes and 20 seconds to read. This is obviously less time than people might spend reading a novel or a college textbook, but it's much longer than Web browsing. The iPad measured at 6.2% lower reading speed than the printed book, whereas the Kindle measured at 10.7% slower than print. However, the difference between the two devices was not statistically significant. Thus, we can say that tablets still haven't beaten the printed book. After using each device, we asked users to rate their satisfaction on a 1-7 scale, with 7 being the best score.iPad, Kindle, and the printed book all scored fairly high at 5.8, 5.7, and 5.6, respectively. The PC, however, scored 3.6. Users felt that reading the printed book was more relaxing than using electronic devices. And they felt uncomfortable with the PC because it reminded them of work. 32.Why do people prefer tablets to desktop computers when reading? A.Tablets are easier to carry. B.Computers take up much space. C.Tablets offer better experience. D.Computers offer fewer resources. 33.What does the underlined phrase “above the heads” in Paragraph 4 mean? A.Easy to forget. B.Inspiring enough. C.Interesting enough. D.Hard to understand. 34.What conclusion can we draw from the last two paragraphs? A.The Kindle offers faster reading speed than the iPad. B.The Kindle offers better reading experience than the PC. C.The PC offers faster reading speed than the printed book. D.The PC offers better reading experience than the printed book. 35.Which would be the best title for the passage? Teachers are another group of adults in your life who can look out for you and guide you. So it is important to develop a good relationship with your teachers. 36 Do you dislike the subject? Or do you like the subject but just can’t warm up to the teacher? If you don’t like the subject being taught, it can affect your relationship with the teacher. Some students say it helps them to think of the classes as stepping stones toward a bigger goal, like going on to college. 37 You may hate math, but learning how to work out averages and percentages can help you in everything from sports to leaving a tip. 38 When it comes to working with teachers, personality can come into play just as it can in any relationship. People naturally just get along better with some people than with others. 39 Learning to work with people you don't connect with easily is a good skill to have in life, no matter what your goals are. 40 Just as teachers need to be fair and treat everyone equally, students have responsibilities, too. You don't have to like your teacher or agree with what he or she says, but it is necessary to be polite. A.It’s easy to deal with the problem. B.What if the teacher is unfair to you? C.What if you just don't like the teacher? D.It's impossible to like everyone all the time. E.If you're having problems with a teacher, try to figure out why. F.Other students say they try to find the practical value of the classes.
