WELCOME TO THE NATIONAL GALLERY
Located in central London at Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery houses over 1,000 Western European paintings dating from 1250 to 1900. Founded in 1824 at the British government’s formal request, it started with merely 38 paintings donated by one wealthy local businessman. Built for public appreciation rather than noble private collections, it expanded steadily over many centuries through gifts and purchases. It shows world-famous masterpieces from across Europe, with collections organized in four wings.
Wing | Level | Collections & Highlights |
Sainsbury Wing | Level 0 | Early Renaissance Paintings (1250 — 1500), featuring pioneering early Italian artists. |
West Wing | Level 1 | High Renaissance Paintings (1500 — 1600), including works by Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. |
North Wing | Level 1 | 17th century European Art by famous Dutch and Spanish painters. |
East Wing | Level — 1 | Education Centre. The Studio provides free hands-on artistic family activities with museum entry. |
