New Space Missions in 2024
ESA’s Hera mission
The European Space Agency (ESA) plans to launch its Hera spacecraft in October on a mission to return to an asteroid (小行星) system visited by NASA’s DART spacecraft in 2022. Hera is designed to collect data on the targeted system, called Didymos. The spacecraft is expected to closely examine the physical properties of Didymos and measure detailed effects of DART’s crash.
Europa Clipper
NASA hopes to launch its Europa Clipper mission in October. This orbiter is designed to carry out close examinations of Jupiter’s moon Europa. Specifically, the mission will look for signs that the icy moon might hold the right conditions to support life. NASA says the orbiter will fly in orbit around Jupiter and perform repeated close flybys of the icy moon.
Boeing’s Starliner test flight
NASA and Boeing have said they plan to launch the first crewed test flight of the company’s Starliner spacecraft. NASA says it is targeting May 2024 to have Starliner ready for flight. The launch date is to be set later.
The spacecraft completed its first unscrewed flight test to the International Space Station (ISS) last May. But Boeing has experienced several technical difficulties with Starliner during the mission and has worked with NASA to fix the problems as it prepares for the planned crewed flight.
SpaceX Starship test
SpaceX, another NASA’s partner, has been successfully using its rockets and spacecraft to transport astronauts and materials to the ISS since 2020. But the company will be seeking a successful test flight in 2024 for its super-heavy Starship spacecraft.
SpaceX experienced two failed Starship tests in 2023 — one in April and the other in November — which resulted in explosions. The April explosion caused major damage to the launch structure in the state of Texas. SpaceX has said it has been examining the issues related to the explosions and plans to carry out another test of Starship as soon as possible. But it will have to wait until the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) completes its investigation of the launch site damage and approves a new test.
1. Which of the following plans to collect data about Didymos?
A. NASA. B. FAA. C. SpaceX. D. ESA.
2. When is Europa Clipper scheduled to launch?
A. In April. B. In May. C. In October. D. In November.
3. What do we know about SpaceX Starship?

The National Heritage Responders is a volunteer network of around 100 experts in cultural heritage conservation from around Puerto Rico. They assist individuals and institutions in figuring out how to save important objects and buildings after disasters. Their crisis hotline has been busier than ever in recent years because of more frequent and severe weather brought on by climate change. In 2023, there have been around 70 calls so far, up from fewer than 10 in 2008, when the hotline first appeared.
Ann Frellsen, the Atlanta-based book and paper conservator, is a longtime heritage responder volunteer with more than three decades of experience in helping out cultural institutions after disasters. She was among those sent to Puerto Rico over several visits starting a couple of months after two hurricanes hit it in 2017.
After providing initial support via the phone, Frellsen and her team came in to help La Casa del Libro and other local institutions in crisis with equipment, supplies and advice. In fact, much of the advice the hotline provides is via phone or video-chat; volunteers are sent out into the field in certain cases, on an as-needed basis.
“There were no stoplights and signs on the highways because they’d all been blown away,” Frellsen said. She added that figuring out how to reach the more than 20 institutions that needed assistance in Puerto Rico was challenging—not to mention the on-the-job hazards.
When Frellsen isn’t heading into disaster zones to help save artifacts (文物) from fires, hurricanes and floods, she trains others in the heritage conservation field to do the same. Some of the participants may eventually take the test to become National Heritage Responders. But at this moment, they are deep in a hands-on training exercise, based on an imaginary situation cooked up by Frellsen and her co-trainers.
4. What can we say about Puerto Rico?
A. It calls on people to keep in contact. B. Natural disasters are increasing there.
C. It works hard to build highways. D. The weather is really nice there.
5. What can be learned about the National Heritage Responders?
A. It teaches individuals how to protect themselves.
B. New volunteers can join it with no tests required.
C. Victims all over the world can contact it by hotline.
D. It sends experts to the disaster areas when necessary.
6. What does the underlined word “hazards” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Dangers. B. Skills. C. Trainings. D. Rights.
7. What are Frellsen and her team busy doing at present?
A. Taking various tests. B. Entering a new disaster area.
C. Conducting a practical exercise. D. Restoring priceless artifacts.
B 5. D 6. A 7. C

We know that spending lots of time sitting down isn’t good for us, but just how much exercise is needed to match the negative health effects of sitting down all day? Research suggests about 30—40 minutes per day of building up a sweat should do it.
Up to 40 minutes of“moderate(温和的)to vigorous(有力的)intensity physical activity” every day is about the right amount to balance out 10 hours of sitting still, the research says—although any amount of exercise or even just standing up helps to some extent.
That’s based on a study published in 2020 analyzing nine previous studies, involving a total of 44, 370 people in four different countries who were wearing some form of fitness tracker. The analysis found the risk of death among those with a more sedentary(久坐的)lifestyle went up as time spent engaging in moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity went down. In other words, putting in some reasonably intensive activities—cycling, brisk walking, gardening—can lower your risk of an earlier death.
While analyses like this one always require some detailed dot-joining across separate studies with different volunteers, timescales and conditions, the benefit of this particular piece of research is that it relied on relatively objective data from wearables—not data self-reported by the participants.
The research based on fitness trackers is broadly in line with the 2020 WHO guidelines, which recommend 150—300 mins of moderate intensity or 75—150 mins of vigorous intensity physical activity every week to balance out sedentary behaviour.
Walking up the stairs instead of taking the lift, playing with children and pets, taking part in yoga or dancing, doing household chores, walking, and cycling are all put forward as ways in which people can be more active—and if you can’t manage the 30—40 minutes right away, the researchers say, start off small.
8. How does the author start the text?
A. By telling stories. B. By listing numbers.
C By giving examples. D. By raising questions.
9. What did the research find?
A. The longer you sit still, the earlier you will die.
B. The more you exercise, the healthier you will be.
C. Productivity can be improved through physical activities.
D. Proper intensive activities help reduce the risk of earlier death.
10. Why is the research reliable?
A. It’s based on previous studies.
B. Its data is relatively objective.
C. It’s carried out in different countries.
D. Its data is from the participants’reports.
11. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To analyze the risk of sitting still.
B. To recommend a healthy lifestyle.
C. To inspire people to do more exercise.
D. To show benefits of physical activities.
D 9. D 10. B 11. C
推理判断题,根据第一段第一句“We know that spending lots of time sitting down isn’t good for us but just how much exercise is needed to match the negative health effects of sitting down all day?”(我们知道花很多时间坐着对我们没有好处,但我们知道需要多少运动才能应对整天坐着对健康的负面影响)可知,本文以设问的方式开篇。
根据第三段最后一句“In other words, putting in some reasonably intensive activities—cycling, brisk walking, gardening—can lower your risk of an earlier death.”(换句话说,进行一些强度合理的活动——骑自行车、快走、园艺——可以降低你过早死亡的风险。)
细节理解题,根据第四段中“the benefit of this particular piece of research is that it relied on relatively objective data from wearables—not data self-reported by the participants”(这项研究的好处是,它依赖于可穿戴设备的相对客观的数据,而不是参与者自我报告的数据)可知,这个调查可信是因为它的数据相对来说更客观。故选B项。
推理判断题,根据文章最后一段“Walking up the stairs instead of taking the lift, playing with children and pets, taking part in yoga or dancing, doing household chores, walking, and cycling are all put forward as ways in which people can be more active—and if you can’t manage the 30—40 minutes right away, the researchers say, start off small.”(研究人员表示,走楼梯而不是乘电梯、与儿童和宠物玩耍、参加瑜伽或舞蹈、做家务、散步和骑自行车都是人们更活跃的方式——如果你不能马上完成30-40分钟,那就从小处着手。)
D
According to the Solar Energy Industry Association, the number of solar panels installed(安装)has grown rapidly in the past decade, and it has to grow even faster to meet climate goals. But all of that growth will take up a lot of space, and though more and more people accept the concept of solar energy, few like large solar panels to be installed near them.
Solar developers want to put up panels as quickly and cheaply as possible, so they haven’t given much thought to what they put under them. Often, they’ll end up filling the area with small stones and using chemicals to control weeds. The result is that many communities, especially in farming regions, see solar farms as destroyers of the soil.
“Solar projects need to be good neighbors,” says Jordan Macknick, the head of the Innovative Site Preparation and Impact Reductions on the Environment(InSPIRE)project. “They need to be protectors of the land and contribute to the agricultural economy.” InSPIRE is investigating practical approaches to “low-impact” solar development, which focuses on establishing and operating solar farms in a way that is kinder to the land. One of the easiest low-impact solar strategies is providing habitat for pollinators(传粉昆虫).
Habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change have caused dramatic declines in pollinator populations over the past couple of decades, which has damaged the U.S. agricultural economy. Over 28 states have passed laws related to pollinator habitat protection and pesticide use. Conservation organizations put out pollinator-friendliness guidelines for home gardens, businesses, schools, cities—and now there are guidelines for solar farms.
Over the past few years, many solar farm developers have transformed the space under their solar panels into a shelter for various kinds of pollinators, resulting in soil improvement and carbon reduction. “These pollinator-friendly solar farms can have a valuable impact on everything that’s going on in the landscape,” says Macknick.
12. What do solar developers often ignore?
A. The decline in the demand for solar energy.
B. The negative impact of installing solar panels.
C. The rising labor cost of building solar farms.
D. The most recent advances in solar technology.
13. What does InSPIRE aim to do?
A. Improve the productivity of local farms.
B. Invent new methods for controlling weeds.
C. Make solar projects environmentally friendly.
D. Promote the use of solar energy in rural areas.
14. What is the purpose of the laws mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To conserve pollinators. B. To restrict solar development.
C. To diversify the economy. D. To ensure the supply of energy.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Pollinators: To Leave or to Stay B. Solar Energy: Hope for the Future
C. InSPIRE: A Leader in Agriculture D. Solar Farms: A New Development
B 13. C 14. A 15. D
根据第二段中的“Often, they’ll end up filling the area with small stones and using chemicals to control weeds. The result is that many communities, especially in farming regions, see solar farms as destroyers of the soil.(通常,他们最终会用小石头填满该地区,并使用化学物质来控制杂草。结果是,许多社区,特别是在农业地区,将太阳能农场视为土壤的破坏者。)”可知,太阳能开发者采用不环保的方式处理太阳能板安装后产生的问题,导致人们把太阳能农场看作是土壤的破坏者,由此可以推断,开发者在安装太阳能板后忽略了其带来的负面影响。故选B项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“InSPIRE is investigating practical approaches to “low-impact” solar development, which focuses on establishing and operating solar farms in a way that is kinder to the land.(InSPIRE正在研究“低影响”太阳能开发的实用方法,其重点是以对土地更友好的方式建立和运营太阳能农场。)”
根据第四段中的“Over 28 states have passed laws related to pollinator habitat protection and pesticide use.(超过28个州通过了与传粉媒介栖息地保护和农药使用有关的法律。)” 故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“Over the past few years, many solar farm developers have transformed the space under their solar panels into a shelter for various kinds of pollinators, resulting in soil improvement and carbon reduction.(在过去的几年里,许多太阳能农场开发商将太阳能电池板下的空间改造成各种传粉媒介的庇护所,从而改善了土壤并减少了碳排放。)”

How to Teach Time Management Skills to Teens
Teens usually have fairly structured schedules. Their school day and their after-school activities are planned out for them. As a result, many of them don’t learn how to manage their time wisely when they have some downtime. ____16____.
Advise your teen to write down his schedule. Your teen’s time may easily get taken up with video games or social media if he’s not careful. Teach him to schedule his day so he can set aside time for chores (琐事), homework, and other responsibilities. ____17____, so time doesn’t idly pass without feeling like he hasn’t done anything fun.
____18____. Whether it’s a planner that your teen writes everything in or an app that manages your teen’s schedule, help your teen find the tools that will work best for him. Talk about the importance of creating a schedule and using lists to manage his time wisely.
Help him to set goals. ____19____. Then, help him identify how much time he’ll need to work on that goal each day. Whether he wants to exercise for 30 minutes 3 times each week or he decides to apply for scholarships one Saturday afternoon each month, goal setting is a great way to help him manage his time.
Help your teen prioritize activities. It’s common for teens to have conflicts in their schedules. A basketball game, birthday party, and church activity may all coincide ___20___, based on his values and commitments.
Set limits on electronics. Your teen may waste countless hours on social media or playing video games if she’s not careful. Establish rules that help her create healthy habits with her cellphone and other digital devices.
A. Model good time management habits
B. Give your teen time management tools
C. Practise managing your own time wisely
D. Encourage him to schedule free time as well
E. Talk to your teen about how to prioritize activities
F. Here are some steps you can take to teach your teen
G. Talk to your teen about the personal goals he wants to reach
F 17. D 18. B 19. G 20. E
前文“As a result, many of them don’t learn how to manage their time wisely when they have some downtime. (因此,他们中的许多人没有学会如何在休息时间明智地管理他们的时间)”指出很多孩子不会管理自己的时间,后文段落给出具体的教孩子管理时间的方法,因此F项“Here are some steps you can take to teach your teen (这里有一些教你孩子的步骤)”承接前文,引出后文的方法,符合语境。故选F。
【17题详解】
前文“Teach him to schedule his day so he can set aside time for chores (琐事), homework, and other responsibilities.
后文“Whether it’s a planner that your teen writes everything in or an app that manages your teen’s schedule, help your teen find the tools that will work best for him. Talk about the importance of creating a schedule and using lists to manage his time wisely. (无论是一个你的孩子写所有事情的计划表,还是一个管理你的孩子日程安排的应用程序,帮助你的孩子找到最适合他的工具。谈谈制定时间表和使用清单来明智地管理时间的重要性)”主要和安排时间的工具相关,因此B项“Give your teen time management tools (给你的孩子时间管理工具)”符合语境,契合后文内容,其中的tools在后文有同词复现。故选B。
【19题详解】
前文“Help him to set goals. (帮助他设定目标)”表明本段和设定目标相关,后文“Then, help him identify how much time he’ll need to work on that goal each day. (然后,帮助他确定他每天需要花多少时间来实现这个目标)”提到第二步是确定具体的时间,因此G项“Talk to your teen about the personal goals he wants to reach (和你的孩子谈谈他想达到的个人目标)”符合语境,建议先讨论目标,可作为第一步,承前启后,其中的goals在前后文有同词复现。故选G。
【20题详解】
前文“It’s common for teens to have conflicts in their schedules. A basketball game, birthday party, and church activity may all coincide (同时发生). (青少年在日程安排上有冲突是很常见的。篮球比赛、生日聚会和教堂活动可能同时进行)”指出青少年常会面临安排有冲突的情况,后文“based on his values and commitments (基于他的价值观和承诺)”提到价值观和承诺,因此E项“Talk to your teen about how to prioritize activities (和你的孩子谈谈如何优先安排活动)”符合语境,指出需谈谈优先安排活动的方法,承前启后,后文是对选项内容的补充。故选E。

One afternoon after school, Mary and her brother, Keith, were eating at a cafe near their home. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. That person was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she went to the restroom. Without realizing, she had left her handphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Mary saw the handphone on the table. She quickly told Keith, “Keith, the girl left behind her handphone.”
Keith looked at the handphone. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Keith had always wanted a handphone. But his parents had told him, “You don’t need one. You can always use the house phone.”
He stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, pausing on every word, “I want to take the handphone.”
Mary could not believe her ears. She merely stared at her brother. “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?”
Having made the decision, Keith quickly grabbed the handphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.
Once back home, Keith locked his house door with trembling hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. Oh, he liked it so much. Now he had his own handphone. Soon, he was polishing it happily.
But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the handphone. What will you tell Father about this? He will ask you how you got the handphone.”
Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.”
Mary said, “Now you are lying too.” Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest?
Then Mary saw a house phone number on the plastic cover of the handphone. “This is the girl’s phone number. Why don't we just call this number? We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her handphone.” She was trying to talk some sense into him.
注意:
That night, Keith turned over in bed from time to time.

Mary was very happy to hear that.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
That night, Keith turned over in bed from time to time. The shiny new handphone in his drawer felt like a heavy stone weighing on his conscience. Images of the girl’s anxious face kept flashing in his mind — what if she needed the phone for an emergency? What if she cried over losing it? Guilt twisted in his stomach, and he sat up abruptly, staring at the moonlight streaming through the window. Finally, he whispered to the darkness, “I have to give it back.”
Mary was very happy to hear that. She hugged Keith tightly and pointed to the phone number on the cover. “Let’s call her right now — she might still be awake worrying!” she urged. Half an hour later, the girl arrived at their doorstep, tears in her eyes. As she thanked them profusely, Keith placed the phone in her hands, his face warm but his heart lighter. Later, he found a small sticker in his bag from the girl: “Kindness shines brighter than any phone.” He smiled, realizing true happiness came not from possession, but from doing what was right.

C
We know that spending lots of time sitting down isn’t good for us but just how much exercise is needed to match the negative health effects of sitting down all day?
