On January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as Open AI’s GPT-40, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of Open AI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips (芯片) for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.

DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right, a little higher than Open AI’s model. A simple version of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.

DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers all over the world started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments (实验) with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U. S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”

US tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, proving (证明) that smart ideas beat expensive tools.

As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.

China has a rich history. From ancient times, the Chinese have made amazing inventions and discoveries. And their ideas reached other countries and changed the world. Many of the things that we use today actually come from ancient China. These are some of China’s most important inventions:

Silk:The ancient Chinese were the first people to make silk. Silk thread (线) is made by silkworms (蚕). The Chinese collected the thread and used it to make a soft and light material. Wealthy people in Europe wanted silk to make their clothes, so a lot of people bought silk from the Chinese. The route (路线) from Europe to China was called the Silk Road.

The Compass: When the Chinese invented the compass, they used it to choose the best places to build their homes at first. They believed that their homes should face north, so they used the compass to find the right direction. Later, the compass was used for travelling on land and sea. The compass made some of history’s most famous journeys possible.

They find the test helpful. The MBTI test puts people into 16 kinds. People can know what kind of people they are by taking the test.
