【原文】W: Sweetest Day is always the third Saturday in October. This holiday is much more important in some regions than in others. Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo are the biggest Sweetest Days cities, but this holiday is gaining in popularity. Every year throughout the country, Sweetest Day is celebrated to make someone happy. It is an occasion which offers an opportunity to remember not only the sick aged and orphan but also friends and relatives. Over sixty years ago, a Cleveland man believing that the city’s orphans and patients too often felt forgotten, formed in the mind an idea of showing them that they were not. He did this by the distribution of small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors, he distributed them on a Saturday in October. In the years that followed, other residents began to participate in the event, which came to be called Sweetest Day. In time the day became an occasion for acknowledging others with a kind act or a small remembrance. Soon, the idea began spreading to other cities all over the country.

What did people do for fun before smartphones and computers were invented? After conducting research, I learned that Cantonese opera (粤剧) was the top form of entertainment in China for centuries. With singing and spoken lines delivered in the Cantonese dialect, Cantonese opera is one of several operatic types born in Guangdong province.
To learn more about the art form, I spoke with Lui Hung-kwong, program director of the Cantonese Opera Academy of Hong Kong. He’s also a well-known performer. Here is something from our conversation.
From the 19th century through the early 20th century, opera troupes (剧团) would perform along the Pearl River Delta in southern China. They lived on boats that were painted red and transported them to various temple festivals during the performance season. A troupe typically stayed in a city for a few days, performing different plays each day. By the 1930s, the major performing places for Cantonese opera had moved to big cities, and more convenient forms of transportation began to be used. As a result, the red boats began to disappear.
In each opera production, the story is told through the “four basic skills” of singing, acting, delivery of spoken lines and martial arts. These are improved by stage makeup, costumes, props and the beats on gongs and drums. The performance is a mix of literature, drama, ballad singing, dance and martial arts.
Cantonese opera is supposed to mirror real life. Older generations read the old stories, and listened to them on the radio. It was like pop culture to them. But our lives today differ greatly from the stories told in the opera. So Cantonese opera begins to tell some themes that will interest kids today. For example, a fairy fails an exam and is forced to come to the earth, where she must learn from human children.
24. Why does the author raise a question in the first paragraph?
A. To make people think.
B. To attract readers’ attention.
C. To lead into the topic of the text.
D. To do research on people’s entertainment.
25. What is the whole text based on?
A. The research done by the author.
B. The author’s interview with an expert.
C. The author’s personal life experiences.
D. The author’s rich knowledge of the opera.
26. What do we know about Cantonese opera from Paragraph 3?
A Its development. B. Its character.
C. Its importance. D. Its popularity.
27. What is Cantonese opera trying to do currently?
A. Improve its quality. B. Mix with pop culture.
C. Attract new generations. D. Reflect old people’s life.

【解析】

One of my most treasured memories of childhood was watching those magical fireflies (萤火虫) light up a field at night. I remember how comforting it was to have the night lightened by countless fireflies announcing their place in the world.
In my adult years, however, I’ve noticed far fewer of these insects. A lot of my friends and families have made the same observation. This is why I was so happy to see a good number of fireflies in our small lawn (草坪) the other night.
My 9-year-old daughter, a girl to not one — but two biologists — is following in her parents’ footsteps already. She is crazy about all wild things. Needless to say, she was pleased with the chance to put off bedtime and to explore a new natural wonder with Mama when I called: “Honey! Come out and see all the fireflies!”
Without wearing shoes, she rushed into the summer night to look at one of the most magical shows of nature — a field of fireflies! It was a moment I would never forget.
So, what’s changed? Why are so many of us seeing fewer fireflies? It mainly has to do with habitat loss caused by increased development and our American obsession (痴迷) with large lawns and “tidy” views.
In our case, we are seeing more fireflies because we’ve recently let parts of our lawn “go”. A neighbor asked us the other day, “Do you guys mow (割草)?!” In some places we do; in others we only mow once a year. We now have a lovely little lawn under our apple trees that is delivering big rewards. We enjoy the free-growing wildflowers by day and the tall plants support more fireflies for us to enjoy at night.
28. What can we learn about the author when she was a child?
A. She had no lights at home at night.
B. She was greatly impressed by fireflies.
C. She noticed fireflies disappearing gradually.
D. She showed great interest in studying insects.
29. Why is the author’s daughter crazy about wild things?
A. She is studying biology.
B. She likes playing outdoors at night.
C. She lives in the city most of the time.
D. She has been influenced by her parents.
30. Why is the author seeing more fireflies in her lawn?
A. Her wild lawn attracted them.
B. Her lawn was in good condition.
C. She built houses for fireflies in her lawn.
D. She grew many apple trees in her garden.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Create a happy childhood for your kids.
B. Teach children to care for the environment.
C. Bring the magic of fireflies back home again.
D. Improve the environment through our efforts.
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. A 31. C
根据第一段“One of my most treasured memories of childhood was watching those magical fireflies (萤火虫) light up a field at night. I remember how comforting it was to have the night lightened by countless fireflies announcing their place in the world.(我最珍贵的童年记忆之一就是看着那些神奇的萤火虫在夜晚照亮田野。我记得,无数的萤火虫在夜空中宣告着它们在世界上的位置,那是多么令人欣慰)”可知,我们能了解到作者小时候,萤火虫给她留下了深刻的印象。故选B项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“My 9-year-old daughter, a girl to not one — but two biologists — is following in her parents’ footsteps already. She is crazy about all wild things.(我9岁的女儿,不是一个,而是两个生物学家的女儿,已经在追随她父母的脚步了。她对一切野生事物都很着迷)”可知,作者的女儿受到父母的影响,所以对野生动物如此着迷。故选D项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“In our case, we are seeing more fireflies because we’ve recently let parts of our lawn “go”. (在我们的情况下,我们看到更多的萤火虫是因为我们最近让草坪的某些部分“放任自流”)”可知,作者不再修剪草坪,而是让它变成野生的草地一样,从而吸引更多的萤火虫。故选A项。
【31题详解】

I remember how comforting it was to have the night lightened by countless fireflies announcing their place in the world.(我最珍贵的童年记忆之一就是看着那些神奇的萤火虫在夜晚照亮田野。我记得,无数的萤火虫在夜空中宣告着它们在世界上的位置,那是多么令人欣慰)”以及第二段“In my adult years, however, I’ve noticed far fewer of these insects. A lot of my friends and families have made the same observation. This is why I was so happy to see a good number of fireflies in our small lawn (草坪) the other night.(然而,在我成年后,我注意到的这种昆虫要少得多。 所以C项“Bring the magic of fireflies back home again.(把萤火虫的魔力带回家)”是本文最好的标题。故选C项。

During work hours in Becker’s bread shop, the kitchen is especially quiet except the sound of the machine. The quiet environment is not the result of the strict rules, but because all the workers are deaf. They use sign language to communicate with each other from time to time.
Becker’s shop is in Changsha City, Hunan Province. It sells many kinds of German bread, cakes and coffee. It is very popular for the story of Becker who opened it.

In Changsha, together with other Chinese trainers, they helped children improve their hearing and language pronunciation. Every little progress each child experienced was a great encouragement to them, and they achieved their goal in life.
After ten years of working for this project, they found that the disabled adults couldn’t be independent because they had no professional skills. Then Becker and his wife set up a bread shop to teach these people how to make bread. With their help, all of them were able to live on their own.

As we become more efficient at recognizing and using patterns, we rely less on creativity to find new paths. We should force ourselves out of our comfort zones and open up new possibilities.

If you usually drive to work, take the subway for a few days. ___38___ Break your routine, experiment and try something new. New things are often creative, but the same old thing never is.

【答案】36. F 37. E 38. D 39. A 40. G
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是如何变得有创造力。
【36题详解】
依据上一句“Most of us think that creativity is a quality (品质) belonging only to artists, writers, or dancers, rather than ourselves.(我们大多数人认为创造力只是艺术家、作家或舞蹈家的一种品质,而不是我们自己的。)”可知,很多人认为创造力只属于艺术家、作家或舞蹈家,后面建议我们如何培养创造力,由此可推断出本句是讲每个人都有创造力,F选项“The truth is that we are all bom with the ability to be creative.(事实上,我们生来就有创造的能力。)”说明我们每个人都是有创造力的,承上启下,符合语境。故选F。
【37题详解】
空前“As said earlier, the human brain was designed to recognize patterns.(如前所述,人类的大脑是用来识别模式的)”说明大脑是用来识别模式的,因此空格处应该说我们可以创造模式,E选项“We continue to create patterns for almost everything we do.(我们继续为我们所做的几乎所有事情创造模式。)”说明了我们可以创造模式,其中的patterns和前面的patterns相一致,因此承接上文,符合语境,故选E。
【38题详解】
由本段小标题“Try different things(尝试不同的东西)”可知,本段主要讲述的是尝试做一些改变,D项“If you normally eat in the office, have lunch under a tree.(如果你通常在办公室吃午饭,那就在树下吃吧)”是一种改变,符合本段主旨,且与上文“If you usually drive to work, take the subway for a few days. (如果你通常开车去上班,那就坐几天地铁)”在句式上保持一致,构成并列。故选D。
【39题详解】
空处是本段的小标题,由空格下方的“Having a great idea is not enough, you must work to make it a reality. (有一个伟大的想法是不够的,你必须努力使它成为现实。)”和“If you can put them into practice, you are well on your way to improving your creativity in all areas of your life.(如果你能把它们付诸实践,你就能很好地在生活的各个方面提高你的创造力。)”可知,本段主要讲的是要行动起来,把一些好的想法变成现实,A选项“Take action(采取行动)”说明要采取行动,因此概括本段内容,可作为小标题,故选A。
【40题详解】
根据下文中的“The difference between a dreamer and a doer is action.(梦想家和实干家的区别在于行动)”可知,梦想家只是想一想,而实干家不但想还去做,G选项“We all have great ideas sometimes, but only a few people turn their ideas into realities.(我们都有伟大的想法,但只有少数人把他们的想法变成现实。)”说明了有的人只是想一想而已,只有少数人会去真正把自己想的事情做出来,引起下文,符合语境,故选G。

One night, Ryder saw his mother crying and learned she could no longer afford her last chemotherapy (化疗) treatment. He broke his piggy bank and offered her all his savings. Although it touched Annie’s heart, she told him it wasn’t enough. Ryder was so disappointed and hurried to the washroom to cry alone. It hurt him terribly to see his mother, who had long hair, and was now bald (秃头的) .
In an attempt to emotionally support her, Ryder brought an electric shaver and shaved his head. “Oh my God, Ryder!” Annie cried after seeing him. She was moved by what her son had done by sacrificing his hair. “Mom, I am with you in this. And you are not alone,” Ryder cried along, knowing little he would be laughed at by his best friends the next day.
A school fair had been organized on the playground, and many people, including parents, were gathering around the stalls (摊位). “Hey, look, someone in our class has lost all his hair!” Ryder’s friends laughed when he arrived.
“I got to carry on,” said Ryder, shyly covering his head in a hat. He was carrying two bags stuffed with some of his favorite toys, books, and recycled craft items he intended to sell at the fair.
As time passed, things were quickly getting sold in all the other stalls except Ryder’s. He did not find time to put up a fancy display or banner (横幅) to attract buyers. But he was determined to make a sale for his mother. So he took out a pen and a giant piece of paper and decided to create a sign that read: Help My Mom Fight Cancer.
“Please help me. I shaved my head to support my mother. But all are making fun of me without understanding me. And I have to sell these items and help her with some money. Please don’t let me down,” he shouted. The fair was about to end, and fortunately Ryder had managed to successfully sell most of his items.

【答案】One possible version
He was about to leave when his three friends surrounded him. “Not now, guys. I’m leaving. Quit it,” he begged. He thought they had come to laugh at him again, but to his shock, they took off their hats, and their heads were shaved clean. “WHAT? Why did you guys shave your heads?” Ryder was startled. “What’s going on?” As it turned out, the boys saw his sign about his mother, and they were moved by it. They felt guilty for picking fun at him.
“Ryder, please take this as well,” he heard a parent calling him. He turned around and saw a group of his friends’ parents approaching him. They contributed more money, and Ryder had approximately $11,000 with him in no time. He was so moved and thanked everyone for their heartwarming gesture. “Don’t thank us, Ryder. We should thank you for helping us realize our mistake. A person is not to be judged by appearance. Thanks for helping us understand that even a small act of kindness can make a huge difference in someone’s life.”

C The author’s personal life experiences.
D The author’s rich knowledge of the opera.
26. What do we know about Cantonese opera from Paragraph 3?
A. Its development. B. Its character.
C. Its importance. D. Its popularity.
27. What is Cantonese opera trying to do currently?
A. Improve its quality. B. Mix with pop culture.
C. Attract new generations. D. Reflect old people’s life.
C
D
During work hours in Becker’s bread shop, the kitchen is especially quiet except the sound of the machine. The quiet environment is not the result of the strict rules, but because all the workers are deaf. They use sign language to communicate with each other from time to time.
Becker’s shop is in Changsha City, Hunan Province. It sells many kinds of German bread, cakes and coffee. It is very popular for the story of Becker who opened it.
Over twenty years ago, Becker and his wife heard about a Chinese public project. It provided language training for the disabled children, but it was short of trainers in Changsha. So they came in 2002 with a common wish to do something meaningful in life.
Luckily, Becker and his wife have also got the support from the local government. More people join them and understand that disabled people can work as well as others when they have the same chances.
32. What makes Becker’s bread shop popular according to the passage?
A. Its owner’s story. B. Its quiet environment.
C. Its strict rules. D. Its good location.

How to Be Creative
Most of us think that creativity is a quality (品质) belonging only to artists, writers, or dancers, rather than ourselves. ___36___ The following tips are a great beginning for developing our creativity.
Get out of your comfort zone
We eagerly accept the familiar and fear the unknown. Break out of your usual patterns and welcome creativity into your life. As said earlier, the human brain was designed to recognize patterns. ___37___ In fact, our comfort zone is nothing more than a collection of patterns. As we become more efficient at recognizing and using patterns, we rely less on creativity to find new paths. We should force ourselves out of our comfort zones and open up new possibilities.
Try different things
If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got. We are creatures of habits and routines, and creativity hates routines (常规). If you usually drive to work, take the subway for a few days. ___38___ Break your routine, experiment and try something new. New things are often creative, but the same old thing never is.
___39___
Having a great idea is not enough, you must work to make it a reality. Have you ever seen a new product and realized that you thought of the same thing long ago? Yet someone else is making money with “your” idea. ___40___ The difference between a dreamer and a doer is action. Do whatever it takes to bring your ideas to life. If you can put them into practice, you are well on your way to improving your creativity in all areas of your life.
A. Take action
B. Seek several options
C. Think from the other person’s point of view.
D. If you normally eat in the office, have lunch under a tree.
E. We continue to create patterns for almost everything we do.
F. The truth is that we are all born with the ability to be creative.
G. We all have great ideas sometimes, but only a few people turn their ideas into realities.
