Her story, made into a TV series named She and Her Girls (《山花烂漫时》), has been well- received since it came out on Sept. 10.
The series is successful because it feels real. Instead of showing Zhang’s life to be one full of pain, it focuses on her strength to deal with problems. In the poor villages of Huaping county, people believe it’s pointless for girls to receive an education. Because of this, many girls are forced to drop out of school at a young age. To help them come back to school, Zhang and other teachers make many home visits. They never give up, even when villagers are unsupportive.
From raising money to enrolling (招收) students, Zhang meets problems every step of the way. However, she is always ready for whatever life throws at her. Showing Zhang’s ability to face challenges head-on, the series tells her story in an inspiring way that wins people’s hearts.

The sea floor is hard to reach but now Australian scientists have come up with a new way to study it: they put cameras on sea lions. The videos have given scientists new information about the sea lions, and also about the sea floor.
Australian sea lions are endangered. Their numbers have dropped by over 60% in the last 40 years. Scientists wanted to learn more about how sea lions hunt for food in different areas of the sea floor. However, it is difficult. Underwater robots are expensive. They often move slowly, and they can’t go everywhere. So scientists had the idea of putting cameras on sea lions. The sea lions could cover large areas quickly, and swim deeply to places humans can’t reach.
The scientists used eight healthy females from two different groups of sea lions. They chose females because they would soon return to land to feed their babies. That meant the scientists could easily get the cameras back.
Over the days, the eight sea lions traveled 560 kilometers underwater, reaching as deep as 110 meters below the surface. In all, the animals collected 89 hours of videos. With these, the scientists learned that different sea lions like different kinds of food. The videos also showed that mother sea lions teach their babies how to hunt.
The videos recorded the places that had never been seen before. The scientists were able to see six different types of sea floor environments. The videos gave them a good idea of the plants and animals living in each of those environments.
Thanks to the sea lions, the scientists now better know the kinds of areas used by these endangered animals, and where these areas can be found. As one of the scientists said, “They’re giving us a window into their secret world.”

19. What did scientists learn from the videos?
A. Different sea lions fight for food. B. Different sea lions like the same food.
C. Sea floor environments are polluted. D. Sea lions learn to hunt from their mothers.
20. Why did scientists choose the female sea lions?
A. They were healthier than the males. B. They swam very slowly underwater.
C. They would soon be back on land. D. They only moved on the sea floor.

On December 27, 2024, the Kinetica-1 (力箭一号) rocket launch didn’t go as planned. It took off at 09:03:31 in the Dongfeng Commercial Aerospace Innovation Test Zone (东风商业航天创新试验区). At first, the first and second stages were okay. But just 3 seconds after the third-stage engine started, the rocket lost its balance. And then, the safety system on the rocket made it self-destruct (自毁).
However, people reacted in a really nice way. Many netizens (网民) encouraged the team. Some even compared it to Elon Musk’s Starship (星舰). The Starship had lots of problems during its tests. But Musk and his team didn’t give up. They saw each problem as a chance to do better. They carefully looked at what went wrong, like if there was a technical problem or something wrong with the design. Then they fixed the spaceship and changed their plans to keep moving forward.
We can learn from this too. When we don’t do well on a test or have trouble with a subject, we can’t be sad or blame (责备) anyone. We should think about what we did wrong. Maybe we didn’t study the right way or we missed some important parts. Once we know that, we can make a better study plan. We can focus on the parts we’re not good at and try to find better ways to learn.
Remember, failure is not the end. It’s a chance to learn and grow. We should be brave and keep trying. Just like the Kinetica-1 team will come back stronger, we can also succeed if we don’t give up.
22. What happened to the Kinetica-1 rocket 3 seconds after the third-stage engine started?
A. It exploded immediately.
B. It lost its balance.
C. It reached the orbit successfully.
D. The safety system on the engine made it self-destruct.
23. Why did many netizens compare the Kinetica-1 to Starship?
A. Because they both had successful launches.
B. Because they were developed by the same team.
C. Because they both had problems during tests, but the teams didn’t give up.
D. Because they had the same design.
24. What can we learn from the story of Kinetica-1 according to the text?
A. We should be brave to face failure and learn from it.
B. Only by comparing with others can we succeed.
C. Failure is acceptable, but we should try to avoid it at all costs.
D. If a rocket fails to launch, the team should give up the project.
25. What should we do when we don’t do well in a test according to the text?
A. Ignore the result and do nothing.
B. Blame others for our failure.
C. Copy others’ study methods.
D. Think about what went wrong and make a better plan.

Have you heard of any volunteer programs like planting trees, cleaning up the community, or looking after the old people? But do you know what volunteer travel is? It is a new and popular volunteer activity among young people.

By doing voluntary work while traveling, travelers may make a real and positive influence on the world. The services volunteers provide can reduce the costs for the communities they serve. Another advantage of volunteer travel is that it helps people ③________ live in cities experience the life in the countryside.
Over the days the eight sea lions traveled 560 kilometers underwater, reaching as deep as 110 meters below the surface.

C. To work out the sea lion population. D. To record the life of different fishes.
19. What did scientists learn from the videos?
A. Different sea lions fight for food. B. Different sea lions like the same food.
C. Sea floor environments are polluted. D. Sea lions learn to hunt from their mothers.

A. They were healthier than the males. B. They swam very slowly underwater.

A Ignore the result and do nothing.
B. Blame others for our failure.
C. Copy others’ study methods.
D. Think about what went wrong and make a better plan.

【答案】
Hello, everyone! It’s important to live a low-carbon life and enjoy a happy life. In my daily life, I keep a balanced diet with more fresh vegetables and less meat and sleep early to stay energetic for my study. To improve myself, I keep reading books every day. Moreover, I always keep a sunny attitude and face difficulties with a smile.
To live a low-carbon life, we’d better take green transport like walking or riding bikes instead of driving cars. It’s necessary to save electricity and water by turning off lights when leaving rooms and taps in time. Also, we should sort rubbish carefully and refuse disposable chopsticks and plastic bags.
In a word, protecting the environment is everyone’s duty. Small actions make a big difference. Let’s take action now to build a beautiful home!
