Early in the year, we rescued a shy, hurt dog named benny. Benny was more than just another rescued animal. He became a symbol of hope and the power of love for us. As we brought him back to health, we all realized there was something special about this dog. It's hard to put into words that feeling of connection with an animal. All of us put in extra care for benny as he trusted us more. He became more playful and smarter, would wire his tail. He took training well, too. Eventually, when he saw a Young couple come to find a dog. Any wage is tail like never before. The couple loved him at first sight and adopted him on their first visit. Every so often, they would contact and send photos of him. I know as a volunteer, I am helping not just animals, but people. This experience has given me lessons on sympathy and teamwork. K IT gives me great joy to know that I really do make a difference. Volunteering here isn't just about the animals. It's about bringing us together on two legs or four. We're all stronger together. M: I see you have a variety of plants. What would you recommend for a beginner?
W: Herbs would be a good choice. They’re very useful, grow fast and are hard to kill. They also attract good insects and can help improve the soil.
M: Good, what new plants are you thinking about for next season?
W: I’ll add some bushes, strawberries and some nuts. These short plants will add shade and in a few years produce a tasty, nutritious crop. And after a couple of years of failure, I will try growing cabbage again.
M: What would you say to someone thinking of creating their own food forest?
W: Observe the area, which means understanding your soil and conditions. Start small and go slow. Use space both underground for roots and above for leaves. Understand each plant’s needs and functions.
M: Inspiring. We look forward to learning more about your growing journey.

M: Today, as I reflect on my first year of volunteering at the local animal shelter, I want to share a story that touched my heart. Early in the year, we rescued a shy, hurt dog named Benny. Benny was more than just another rescued animal. He became a symbol of hope and the power of love for us. As we brought him back to health, we all realize there was something special about this dog. It’s hard to put into words that feeling of connection with an animal. All of us put in extra care for Benny. As he trusted us more, he became more playful and smarter and would wag his tail. He took training well too. Eventually when he saw a young couple come to find a dog. Then he wagged his tail like never before. The couple loved him at first sight and adopted him on their first visit. Every so often they would contact and send photos of him. I know as a volunteer, I am helping not just animals but people. This experience has given me lessons on sympathy and teamwork. It gives me great joy to know that I really do make a difference. Volunteering here isn’t just about the animals, it’s about bringing us together on two legs or four, we’re all stronger together. I encourage all of you to consider joining the team in some way.

根据Just a Reminder部分的“Each camper will receive a camp shirt and a pair of shorts on the first day of the camp and is requested to wear them every day.(每位营员将在夏令营的第一天收到一件营服和一条短裤,并被要求每天穿着它们)”可知,夏令营要求统一着装。故选A。
根据Refund Policy部分的“Cancellations 14 to 5 days prior to the camp start will receive a refund of 50% of the cost.(若在夏令营开始前14天至5天取消,将退还50%的费用)”可知,在营地开始前14到5天取消,将获得费用的50%退款。
B
I was always the type of individual who hated being called on in class. It was not due to a lack of knowledge — I was, in fact, quite good at grasping the material. Rather, I disliked the spotlight being cast upon me. Moreover, I had few friends, and being overweight since childhood often made me the target of jokes.
I’ve found a way to change all that. It began when a teacher suggested that I try out for the basketball team. Initially, I didn’t take the idea seriously at all. Being chubby (圆胖的), I just knew that I’d only embarrass myself. But because the teacher — a favorite with me — kept insisting I “go for it”, I decided to give it a try.
When I first started attending the practice sessions, I really didn’t have a good handle on the game of basketball. To be honest, the rules of the game were a mystery to me. Luckily, I wasn’t the only one “new” to the game, so I resolved to do my best at each practice session. I was learning, and I was getting better even if it was little by little.
Then it became more fun and more motivating. I practiced and practiced. Pretty soon the competitive part of me was winning over my chubby-kid complex. I began to forget that I was chubby. I even discovered that my “size” wasn’t such a disadvantage at all; I could make a basket from right under the net and block at the same time!
Gaining self-confidence in playing inspired me to try out other things. I have gone from “hiding” myself to raising my hand. With my new and improved self-confidence come more praises, some from teachers, and some from teammates and classmates. But these days, they also come from the face in the mirror — which is the “person” whose comments I value most. Best of all, I’m learning to really believe in myself.
23. Why did the author dislike being asked in class?
A. He couldn’t figure out the answers. B. He felt uneasy about being noticed.
C. He found the teaching style unappealing. D. He was engaged in developing friendships.
24. How did the author feel on hearing the teacher’s suggestion?
A. Uninterested. B. Misguided. C. Appreciative. D. Confused.
25. How did playing basketball benefit the author?
A. He dropped quite a bit of weight. B. He learned how to cooperate.
C. He developed a funny personality. D. He became sure of himself.
B 25. A 26. D
根据第一段的“It was not due to a lack of knowledge — I was, in fact, quite good at grasping the material. Rather, I disliked the spotlight being cast upon me. (这不是因为缺乏知识——事实上,我非常擅长掌握材料。相反,我不喜欢聚光灯照在我身上。)”可推知,作者不喜欢在课堂上被提问不是因为知识不足,而是不喜欢被关注,也就是被注意到会让他感到不安。故选B。
【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的“Initially, I didn’t take the idea seriously at all. Being chubby (圆胖的), I just knew that I’d only embarrass myself. (起初,我根本没有把这个想法当回事。由于身材圆胖,我只知道我只会让自己出丑。)”可知,作者最初对老师的建议并不感兴趣。故选A。
根据最后一段“Gaining self-confidence in playing inspired me to try out other things. I have gone from ‘hiding’ myself to raising my hand. With my new and improved self-confidence come more praises... Best of all, I’m learning to really believe in myself.
Many think that language is what sets humans apart from other animals, and that for us to think, language is an essential precondition. Bertrand Russell, a British philosopher, even claimed that no intelligent thinking can take place without language. ___26___ It found that language and thought are two distinct entities (实体), working in separate parts of the brain. They are, in short, far more independent than we imagined.
The researchers explored the language-thought relationship through two research approaches. ___27___ They asked these people to solve math problems or perform social reasoning tests as long as the instructions were non-verbal. However, all the subjects could still complete complex tasks.
The researchers also used brain-imaging tools to study the brains of healthy volunteers as they performed non-verbal tasks, like solving puzzles and planning. It was found that the brain’s language regions were mostly inactive during such activities. ___28___
So, if language isn’t necessary for thinking, then why did humans develop it? Fedorenko, one of the study’s authors, has found the answer. ___29___ Most things we have learned about the world are through language. By being able to share complex information through language, humans have gained an evolutionary advantage in the world.
___30___ For example, the English sentence “he rang the doorbell” is usually phrased as “the doorbell rang” in Japanese. As a result, English speakers are more likely to focus on the person responsible for the action than Japanese speakers, according to Psychology Today.
A. In other words, we can think without words.
B. How does language influence our daily decisions?
C. Language serves mainly as a tool for communication.
D. However, a recent study in Nature suggests otherwise.
E. First, they studied patients suffering from language loss.
F. Human culture is the foundation on which all knowledge is built.
G. While language doesn’t generate thoughts, it can influence how we think.
D 27. E 28. A 29. C 30. G
上文“Many think that language is what sets humans apart from other animals, and that for us to think, language is an essential precondition. Bertrand Russell, a British philosopher, even claimed that no intelligent thinking can take place without language.(许多人认为语言是将人类与其他动物区分开来的东西,对于我们思考而言,语言是一个必不可少的先决条件。英国哲学家伯特兰・罗素甚至声称,没有语言就不可能进行明智的思考)”说明很多人认为语言是思维的必要条件;结合下文“It found that language and thought are two distinct entities (实体), working in separate parts of the brain. They are, in short, far more independent than we imagined.(研究发现,语言和思维是两个不同的实体,分别在大脑的不同部分工作。简而言之,他们比我们想象的要独立得多)”推知,空处和前文为转折关系,说明有不同观点。所以D项 “然而,《自然》杂志最近的一项研究却提出了不同的看法。”符合语境。故选D。
【27题详解】
上文“The researchers explored the language-thought relationship through two research approaches.(研究人员通过两种研究方法探索了语言与思维的关系)”说明研究人员有两种研究方法。
上文“The researchers also used brain-imaging tools to study the brains of healthy volunteers as they performed non-verbal tasks, like solving puzzles and planning. It was found that the brain’s language regions were mostly inactive during such activities.(研究人员还使用脑成像工具研究了健康志愿者在执行非语言任务(如解谜和规划)时的大脑。研究发现,在这些活动中,大脑的语言区域大多处于不活跃状态)”说明在非语言任务中大脑语言区域不活跃。空处是对上文的总结,说明这意味着什么。所以A项“换句话说,我们可以不用语言进行思考”符合语境。故选A。
上文“So, if language isn’t necessary for thinking, then why did humans develop it? Fedorenko, one of the study’s authors, has found the answer.(那么,如果语言对于思考来说不是必需的,那么人类为什么要发展语言呢?该研究的作者之一费多伦科找到了答案)”推知,空处应解释语言发展的原因。所以C项“语言主要是作为一种交流工具”符合语境。故选C。
【30题详解】
下文“For example, the English sentence “he rang the doorbell” is usually phrased as “the doorbell rang” in Japanese. As a result, English speakers are more likely to focus on the person responsible for the action than Japanese speakers, according to Psychology Today.(例如,英语句子 “he rang the doorbell(他按响了门铃)”在日语中通常表述为 “the doorbell rang(门铃响了)”。因此,据《今日心理学》报道,说英语的人比说日语的人更有可能关注对这一行为负责的人)”说明语言可以影响我们的思维方式。空处应先总述语言对思维有影响。所以G项 “虽然语言不会产生思想,但它可以影响我们的思维方式”符合语境。故选G。

I was always the type of individual who hated being called on in class. It was not due to a lack of knowledge
-I was,in fact, quite good at grasping the material.Rather,I disliked the spotlight being cast upon me.Moreover.
I had few friends, and being overweight since childhood often made me the target of jokes.
I've found a way to change all that.It began when a teacher suggested that I try out for the basketball team.
Initially,I didn't take the idea seriously at all.Being chubby ()I just knew that I'd only embarrass myself.
But because the teacher-a favorite with me-kept insisting I"go for it",I decided to give it a try.
When I first started attending the practice sessions,I really didn't have a good handle on the game of
basketball. To be honest, the rules of the game were a mystery to me.Luckily,I wasn't the only one"new"to the
game,so I resolved to do my best at each practice session.I was learning, and I was getting better even if it was
little by little.

Then it became more fun and more motivating.I practiced and practiced.Pretty soon the competitive part of
me was winning over my chubby-kid complex.I began to forget that I was chubby.I even discovered that my
"size"wasn't such a disadvantage at all;I could make a basket from right under the net and block at the same
time!
Gaining self-confidence in playing inspired me to try out other things.I have gone from"hiding"myself to
raising my hand. With my new and improved self-confidence come more praises, some from teachers, and some
from teammates and classmates. But these days, they also come from the face in the mirror-which is the
"person whose comments I value most.Best of all,I'm learning to really believe in myself.

Many think that language is what sets humans apart from other animals, and that for us to think, language is
an essential precondition.Bertrand Russell,a British philosopher, even claimed that no intelligent thinking can
take place without language.26 It found that language and thought are two distinct entities ()
working in separate parts of the brain. They are,in short, far more independent than we imagined
The researchers explored the language-thought relationship through two research approaches.27
They asked these people to solve math problems or perform social reasoning tests as long as the instructions were
non-verbal.However,all the subjects could still complete complex tasks
The researchers also used brain-imaging tools to study the brains of healthy volunteers as they performed
non-verbal tasks, like solving puzzles and planning. It was found that the brain's language regions were mostly
inactive during such activities.28
So,if language isn't necessary for thinking, then why did humans develop it?Fedorenko, one of the study's
authors, has found the answer.29 Most things we have leamed about the world are through language.By
