At the age of 16, Lasse Stolley from Germany went out for a change after graduation from junior high school. Little did he know that this change would take him farther than 500,000 kilometers — all on trains.
Inspired by a movie he had watched online, Stolley bought a Bahncard 100, a ticket that allows unlimited (无限制的) travel on all Deutsche Bahn trains in Germany for a year. But Stolley didn’t just travel on those trains. He made his home on trains, living there full-time. During the day, he took trips and at night, he slept across the seats on high-speed trains.
“I can decide every day where I want to go, whether to the Alps, to a big city or to the sea,” Stolley said.
Each morning, Stolley would check the train connections for the day, and decide what journeys he would take based on the weather and his mood (心情). He might stop off at a swimming pool for a shower, or enjoy the views with a hike between train rides.
While he didn’t pay rent, Stolley said that he had spent around $10,000 a year on living expenses, including his $6,400 train pass and entry cost to things like swimming pools. But since Stolley was a “Platinum” Deutsche Bahn customer, he could eat from Deutsche Bahn for free.
To cover his extra cost, he made a buck on the move by working as a programmer from his laptop In 2023 alone, Stolley spent over 3,700 hours on trains. He also took trains across Europe with an Interrail pass, and travelled as far as Ankara in Turkey. All of his adventures were recorded on his online blog, named “Life on the Train”.
4. What drove Stolley’s interest in travelling by train?
A. A lesson. B. A book. C. A ticket. D. A film.
5. Why was Stolley’s journey special?
A. He lived on trains. B. He never got off the same train.
C. His train journey lasted over a year. D. He didn’t spend any money.
6. What do the underlined words “a buck” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. A choice. B. Paper. C. A difference. D. Money.

Researchers from the University of York found that children’s views changed when they were encouraged to write about the marine (海洋的) plastic litter surrounding Latin American countries.
The story-writing activity took place during COVID-19. A total of 89 children took part in the study. They were asked to think about what kind of litter would be found in the ocean. The children were given a list of items and asked to create a story around them, keeping in mind the plastic pollution problem.
Over half of the stories showed the children had some awareness of the harmful effects plastic has on marine life — what would happen if animals ate plastic, got stuck in plastic, or were poisoned by things in plastic. Many of the stories described very terrible results, including injuries, death, environmental impacts as well as how plastics affect the beauty of beaches.
Creating stories around litter had an impact on the children as well. The stories showed clear examples that human behavior is the cause of plastic pollution and the importance of individual action. For example, about 77 percent of the stories talked about solutions to plastic littering.
“A key part of our project was to examine the children’s responses to questionnaires (调查表) they completed before and after writing these stories. We found that their knowledge on the topic increased and they became more proactive, as they reported doing more pro-environmental acts afterwards. Children focused more on preventing the problem from worsening than on ways to clean up existing litter,” explains Kayleigh Wyles, a scientist from the University of Plymouth.
This story-writing activity shows that by viewing plastic items as artifacts (人工制品), each with its own story, we can draw children’s attention to the objects’ use and their disposal (处理). “This project has helped show how we can get that message across to children and hopefully then make a difference,” says John Schofield a professor at York University.
8. What were the children asked to do in the activity?
A. Collect plastic rubbish in the ocean.
B. Do some research on marine pollution.
C. Make up a story about marine plastic waste.
D. Observe the plastic items given to them.
9. What did the activity make the researchers realize?
A. Plastic had already had a bad impact on children.
B. Great attention should be drawn to plastic’s effects.
C. Children were aware of the impact of plastic on human health.
D. Children knew something about plastic’s threat to marine life.
10. What does the underlined word “proactive” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Competitive. B. Involved. C. Practical. D. Promising.
11. What do John Schofield’s words about the activity suggest?
A. Such an activity is quite meaningful.
B. Plastic items draw the children’s attention.
C. Children can be easily inspired by the activity.
D. Plastic waste should be turned into creative artifacts.
C 9. D 10. B 11. A

Do you get nervous thinking about geometry, equations (方程式) or a coming math test? If your answer is “yes”, you are far from alone. Math anxiety has become a common psychological condition among students around the world. Students in countries with higher levels of math anxiety tend to achieve lower math grades, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Feb. 15.
Math anxiety — a negative emotional reaction to the core subject — causes fear, physical suffering and behavior problems among young pupils, according to a University of Cambridge study. In ordinary life, many people experience some degree of discomfort when meeting with a math problem, ranging from mild tension to strong fear.
Some people also experience physical symptoms such as sweaty palms or a racing heart. They may then try to avoid every situation involving numbers, meaning they are held back from pursuing careers related to this subject, such as science, technology or engineering, according to The Guardian.
Comfort comes from the fact that those with math anxiety aren’t destined (注定的) to be bad at math. “If a child has math anxiety, don’t assume that they’re not good at math. They may have had a really bad experience with math and there are ways to improve math achievement,” Daniel Ansari, the senior author of the study, told The London Free Press. “Students with math anxiety are not cognitively (认知地) disadvantaged.”
Also, there are ways to manage your stress related to math. If you’re feeling stressed before a math exam, it may help to spend a few minutes exploring those feelings before the exam begins. “It’s about making sure you’re interpreting your feelings correctly,” Sian Beilock, a cognitive scientist in the US told the BBC. “Just because you have a fast heartbeat and sweaty palms, that does not necessarily mean you will fail.”
A little math anxiety could be taken as a positive challenge to overcome. Just like many people get stage fright before delivering a speech, this nervous energy can help to motivate, according to Ian Lyons, a psychologist at Georgetown University in the US.
12. Why does the author begin the passage with a question?
A. To expect answers from the readers. B. To introduce the topic “math anxiety”.
C. To identify problems with math learning. D. To emphasize the difficulty of a math test.
13. What does the author focus on in Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. Analyzing causes. B. Proving examples.
C. Explaining influences. D. Drawing comparisons.
14. What message do Daniel Ansari’s words convey in Paragraph 4?
A. Math anxiety is what leads to students’ failure.
B. Math anxiety is what nearly everyone will face.
C. Math anxiety doesn’t necessarily mean poor math.
D. Math anxiety doesn’t necessarily allow improvement space.
15. How should you deal with the stress related to math according to the article?
A. Learn to understand your feelings. B. Turn to cognitive experts for help.
C. Take all nervous energy as a challenge. D. Practice more before taking math exams.
B 13. C 14. C 15. A

根据第一段问题之后“If your answer is “yes”, you are far from alone. Math anxiety has become a common psychological condition among students around the world. (如果你的回答是“是”,那么你绝非个例。数学焦虑已成为全球学生中普遍存在的一种心理状况。)”及下文对数学焦虑现象的特征和产生的影响的具体描述可推知,作者用一个问题开头是为了引出文章的主题“数学焦虑”。故选B。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中“Math anxiety — a negative emotional reaction to the core subject — causes fear, physical suffering and behavior problems among young pupils, according to a University of Cambridge study. (剑桥大学的一项研究指出,数学焦虑(即对核心学科产生的负面情绪反应)会导致青少年学生产生恐惧、身体不适以及行为问题。)”和第三段“Some people also experience physical symptoms such as sweaty palms or a racing heart. They may then try to avoid every situation involving numbers, meaning they are held back from pursuing careers related to this subject, such as science, technology or engineering, according to The Guardian. (还有一些人会出现一些身体上的症状,比如手掌出汗或者心跳加速。据《卫报》报道,他们可能会尽量避开任何涉及数字的情况,这意味着他们无法从事与这一学科相关的职业,比如科学、技术或工程领域的工作。)”可知,第二、三段主要说明了数学焦虑所产生的负面影响。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中““If a child has math anxiety, don’t assume that they’re not good at math. They may have had a really bad experience with math and there are ways to improve math achievement,” Daniel Ansari, the senior author of the study, told The London Free Press. “Students with math anxiety are not cognitively (认知地) disadvantaged.” (该研究的高级作者丹尼尔·安萨里在接受《伦敦自由报》采访时表示:“如果孩子有数学焦虑,不要认为他们数学不好。他们可能只是有过非常糟糕的数学体验,而且有办法提高数学成绩。有数学焦虑的学生在认知能力上并不处于劣势。”)”可知,Daniel的话表明数学焦虑并不一定意味着数学能力差。故选C。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“If you’re feeling stressed before a math exam, it may help to spend a few minutes exploring those feelings before the exam begins. “It’s about making sure you’re interpreting your feelings correctly,” Sian Beilock, a cognitive scientist in the US told the BBC. “Just because you have a fast heartbeat and sweaty palms, that does not necessarily mean you will fail.” (如果你在数学考试前感到紧张,在考试开始前花几分钟时间梳理一下这些情绪或许会有所帮助。美国认知科学家西恩·贝洛克在接受英国广播公司采访时表示:“关键在于确保你正确解读了自己的情绪。仅仅因为心跳加速、手心出汗,并不一定意味着你就会考砸。”)”可知,学会理解自己的情绪有助于你应对数学焦虑。故选A。
There’s a Chinese saying that goes: “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit (继承) a fortune. ____16____”
For thousands of years, the greatest thinkers have suggested the same thing: Happiness is found in helping others. Scientific research provides data to support the idea that helping others may be the secret to living a happier and healthier life. Giving can feel great. ____17____ Plus, the more you give, the more you stand to gain purpose, meaning, and happiness. Follow these tips:
Find your passion. It’s not how much you give. It’s how much love you put into giving. You might care about one cause more than others, and that’s okay. Support the cause that feels right for you.
Give your time. The gift of time is often more valuable to the receiver, and more satisfying to the giver, than the gift of money. ____18____ We can give some of this time to help others — whether a few hours each day, or a few days each year.
Give to groups with clear goals. Michael Norton, a professor at Harvard Business School, in Massachusetts, says that “giving to a cause that specifies what they’re going to do with your money or service leads to more happiness.”
____19____ “Selfless giving...easily becomes overwhelming,” psychologist Adam Grant says. He advises giving to others, but keeping your personal and emotional needs in mind. You matter too!
Be active in activities. ___20___. Think about your daily schedule — even a few hours each week can make a difference. For example, if you value a clean environment, giving a few hours each month to local clean-up efforts (like community trash-pickup events) can help a lot.
A. Don’t forget about yourself.
B. Love the cause you choose.
C. Set aside time to serve your community.
D. The key is to find the approach that works for you.
E. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.
F. And as we learn early, it’s better to give than to receive.
G. We don’t all have the same amount of money, but we all have time.
E 17. F 18. G 19. A 20. C
由上文“If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. (如果你想快乐一小时,打个盹。如果你想快乐一天,去钓鱼。如果你想快乐一年,继承一笔财富)”可知,这是一个排比结构,按照时间维度(一小时、一天、一年)递进。本空需要延续这个结构,给出能获得“一生”快乐的方式。E选项“If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody. (如果你想快乐一生,就去帮助别人)”能完美承接上文,完成从短暂快乐到终身幸福的逻辑递进,并直接点明文章“助人即幸福”的核心主旨。故选E。
【17题详解】
由上文“Giving can feel great. (给予能让人感觉很好)”以及下文“Plus, the more you give, the more you stand to gain purpose, meaning, and happiness. (而且,你给予的越多,你就有望获得更多的目标、意义和幸福)”可知,本空需要进一步阐述“给予”带来的积极感受,起到承上启下的作用。F选项“And as we learn early, it’s better to give than to receive. (正如我们很早就学到的,给予比接受更好)”能承接上文“给予能让人感觉很好”的观点,并用一句广为人知的谚语“it’s better to give than to receive”加以强化,与下文的“给予越多收获越多”紧密衔接。故选F。
【18题详解】
由上文“The gift of time is often more valuable to the receiver, and more satisfying to the giver, than the gift of money. (对于接受者来说,时间的礼物往往比金钱的礼物更有价值,给予者也更满意)”可知,本段核心是论述“付出时间”的价值。本空需要解释为什么时间是我们可以付出的宝贵资源。G选项“We don’t all have the same amount of money, but we all have time. (我们拥有的金钱数量不尽相同,但我们所有人都拥有时间)”通过对比金钱,强调了“时间”是每个人都拥有的、可以平等付出的资源,从而为下文“We can give some of this time to help others(我们可以拿出一些时间去帮助别人)”的倡议提供了逻辑基础。故选G。
【19题详解】
由下文“‘Selfless giving...easily becomes overwhelming,’ psychologist Adam Grant says. He advises giving to others, but keeping your personal and emotional needs in mind. You matter too! (‘无私的给予……很容易变得让人难以承受,’心理学家Adam Grant说。他建议给予他人,但要记住你自己的个人和情感需求。你也很重要!)”可知,本段的核心建议是:在帮助他人时,要注意平衡,不能忽略自我。A选项“Don’t forget about yourself. (不要忘记你自己)”能准确地概括本段主旨,作为段首主题句,与下文的专家引语和详细解释吻合。故选A。
由上文“Be active in activities. (积极参与活动)”以及下文“Think about your daily schedule — even a few hours each week can make a difference. (想想你的日常安排——即使每周几小时也会有所不同。)”可知,本空要说的是对“积极参与”这一宽泛概念的具体化阐述,C选项“Set aside time to serve your community.(留出时间为你的社区服务)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“serve your community”将“activities”的范围具体化为社区服务,且该选项中的“Set aside time(留出时间)”与下文的“Think about your daily schedule(想想你的日常安排)”,“a few hours each week(每周几个小时)”以及“a few hours each month(每月几个小时)”相呼应。

从句中主语为we,谓语部分为have to survive,宾语为mountains of homework and exams。 故填in。
故填is recorded。
Failing to turn in your homework on time为动名词短语作主语。故填to turn。
故填a。
故填that或which。
故填the。
前文“Even a 9th grader can sit in ____9____ same classroom as 12th graders.”

I was 16 and loved music a lot. I was dying to buy an album (专辑) from my favorite band. But my pocket money was only enough for daily needs. I had no extra money for the album, so I felt sad.
Luckily, there were many part-time jobs near my home. Many old people needed help. So I decided to find a part-time job to make money for the album.
I chose Mrs. Hudson, the oldest person I knew. She was over 80 and couldn’t take care of her garden. Her garden had flowers, grass, and some tomato plants. I knocked on her door, trying to be brave enough to ask for work. Good for me — she said she really needed help in the garden.
It was a very hot summer day. My first job was to pull out weeds. I got on my knees and pulled them one by one. The work was tiring and boring. Soon I felt very tired. But when I thought of the album, I got all my energy back and kept working.
“If only I had a portable electric fan (便捷式电风扇),” I said to myself, wiping sweat from my face. After working hard for hours, I got 10 dollars. It was less than I thought, but enough to buy the album.
With the 10 dollars, I couldn’t wait to go to the supermarket for my favorite album. I thought this would be a special moment — I could buy what I liked with my own hard work.
On my way to the supermarket, I was singing happily. Then I saw my mom working on the other side of the road. Actually, I’d never seen her work before; I just knew she was a saleswoman.

2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
My mother was handing out leaflets(传单)to passers-by.

I continued making my way to the supermarket.

My mother was handing out leaflets to passers-by. Under the burning sun, her T-shirt was damp with sweat. She would give a leaflet to everyone that passed by, with an eager smile on her face. Some people just walked right past her while some others would refuse by waving their hands. There were also some people who would accept the leaflet politely but throw it into a garbage can right away. Seeing that scene, I couldn’t help but feel bad. I never considered my mother’s work to be so hard.
I continued making my way to the supermarket. However, when I found the album I had been longing for, my mother’s sweaty face came to my mind and I hesitated. I gave up buying the album and bought a portable electric fan instead. Then I returned to the place where my mother worked. She was obviously surprised to see me standing in front of her. When I took out the fan, telling her that it was for her, she was moved to tears and then broke into a happy smile. It was when I saw a big smile on her face that I understood the true value of money.

D. Money.
7. Which word can best describe Stolley?
A. Honest. B. Adventurous. C. Easygoing. D. Warmhearted.

8 What were the children asked to do in the activity?
A. Collect plastic rubbish in the ocean.
B. Do some research on marine pollution.
C. Make up a story about marine plastic waste.
D. Observe the plastic items given to them.
9. What did the activity make the researchers realize?

Do you get nervous thinking about geometry, equations (方程式) or a coming math test? If your answer is “yes”, you are far from alone. Math anxiety has become a common psychological condition among students around the world. Students in countries with higher levels of math anxiety tend to achieve lower math grades, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Feb. 15.
Math anxiety — a negative emotional reaction to the core subject — causes fear physical suffering and behavior problems among young pupils, according to a University of Cambridge study.

注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
