M: Hello, Sophia. What were you doing when the heavy rainstorm hit yesterday?
W: Hi, George. I was watching TV at home. What about you?
M: I was waiting for the bus at that time. I just finished reading a novel at the library.

M: That’s right. And it’s really important to have a family plan. Everyone needs to know where to meet up. This will help if we can’t find each other.
W: Good point! We should also learn the safest way to leave our home quickly. Many people don’t think about that until it’s too late.
M: You’re right. All these ideas are helpful.
第五节
25-30
What are tsunamis? They are huge and powerful rises and falls of sea water. As the sea water reaches the beach, they become even bigger and stronger.
Tsunamis are one of the strongest powers in nature. So what makes this serious disaster? Earthquakes are the main cause of tsunamis. When an earthquake happens in the ocean, part of the ocean floor moves suddenly. As a result, the sea water moves quickly and powerfully. This is how tsunamis start!
Tsunamis are very dangerous natural disasters. Their huge power can cover whole islands in just minutes. They can make floods and break down small towns. Because they are so powerful and fast, tsunamis can do a lot of harm. We must take them seriously.

第五节
25-30
Now let’s make a short conclusion for today’s debate on snacking. The support side believes that snacking, if done in a right way, can actually make people feel better and healthier. If we make our own snacks instead of buying those with too much sugar and salt, snacks are good for health. For example, we can bring some yogurt and fruit. They can easily make you feel full. They are also healthier than chips and fries.
On the other hand, the other side argues that snacking easily leads to bad eating habits. Many people eat too many snacks and forget about balanced meals. They believe it’s better to have three meals on time, and no food in between. They also think eating snacks make people less focused on their work. It’s better to not have snacks at all.
To sum up, whether snacking is good or bad depends on if we can make wise control of the food.

A herd (群) of wild elephants in Yunnan travelled together over 500 kilometres. Their journey drew much attention. How do these strong animals with long trunks (鼻子) live together? Actually, they follow special rules that keep them happy and peaceful.
Different from many animal families, the matriarch, a female (雌性) elephant, usually leads the family. She is often the oldest and wisest elephant in the herd. She makes important decisions, such as where to find water and food, or when to move to a new place.
Elephant families are mainly made up of females and their young. When a baby elephant is born, all females share the responsibility of caring for it. This “babysitting (照看)” rule means babies always have someone to protect them.
Why are there usually no male (雄性) elephants in their herd? Actually, male elephants leave their family when they become teenagers. They will live alone or join herds of other male elephants.
These rules show the strong connections between elephants. They are truly special in the animal world.
50. Who usually leads the elephant family?
A. The strongest female.
B. The longest-trunked female.
C. The oldest and wisest female.
51. What’s the babysitting rule in elephant families?
A. All female elephants help care for babies.
B. Mother elephants care for their babies.
C. Young elephants care for themselves.
52. What may happen to male elephants after growing up?
A. They stay to protect babies.
B. They find food for the families.
C. They live alone or join other male herds.
53. What is the best title for the text?
A. Inside Elephant Families: Special Rules for Harmony
B. Female and Male Elephants: Different Jobs in Families
C. Animal Family Life: Elephant and Other Animal Families

Australia passed a new rule in 2024 to stop people under 16 from using most social media platforms (平台). The government made the rule to protect young people, and it would go into effect in one year. You probably know the basics of being safe online: Don’t share private details with people you don’t know; don’t meet someone you only know online. Besides these basic rules, you should also know about cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying never stops. If you experience it, don’t stay silent. First, tell your parents, teachers or other trusted adults what’s happening. If someone is unkind to you, or posts your private information, keep the records of the bullying, like screenshots (截图) of messages and posts. Then you can report it to the social media platforms (平台) or the police.
Remember, your online actions matter as much as the way others treat you. Good netizens treat everybody online with kindness and respect. If you’ve done something you shouldn’t have done, it’s never too late to say sorry and fix the problem, such as taking the post down.

Drought (干旱) is a long time of very dry weather without enough rain. It happens when normal weather patterns (模式) change, and this influences how water moves around. Changes in atmospheric circulation (大气循环) can stop storm tracks (路径) – the ways storms usually follow, for months or even years. This can greatly reduce the amount (量) of rain an area usually gets.
Weather events in the ocean can also have an effect on drought. El Niño is a weather event that happens in the Pacific Ocean near South America. During El Niño, ocean water gets warmer, and this can change where storms go. As a result, places like Indonesia and Australia may experience drought. La Niña is the opposite of El Niño. During La Niña, ocean water gets cooler, and some parts of North and South America can become drier. Both El Niño and La Niña usually last about one year.
There is still much discussion about drought. Some scientists believe, as the Earth gets warmer, some places will get more rain while others will get less. But other scientists think it will bring more rain everywhere and reduce drought risks.
54. What do storm tracks influence when they stop?
A. Atmospheric circulation.
B. The amount of rain.
C. The use of water.
55. What do we know about El Niño and La Niña?
A. They happen in the same year.
B. They can make some areas drier.
C. They make the surface water warmer.
56. What do scientists argue about in the last paragraph?
A. The ways to check drought levels.
B. The plans to solve Earth warming.
C. The effect of Earth warming on drought.
57. What does the passage mainly discuss about drought?

B. Its changes.
C. Its influence.

Scientists say hurricanes (飓风) in the Atlantic and typhoons (台风) in the Pacific are becoming stronger because of climate change.
In Japan, a research project called TyphoonShot is trying to find ways to stop or weaken (削弱) typhoons by 2050.
The idea isn’t new. In 1947, the USA tried a test called Project Cirrus. It tried to use the way of cloud seeding (人工增雨) to weaken a hurricane. Sadly, the hurricane then changed its way and did great harm in Georgia. Actually, scientists couldn’t prove whether (是否) cloud seeding was the real causes of the change.
TyphoonShot scientists think typhoons form when the sea water is warm, so they try to pump (用泵抽运) cold water from deep in the ocean. They believe changing the temperature (温度) of water can reduce a typhoon’s power.
However, other scientists have doubts about TyphoonShot. One scientist at MIT worried a hurricane or typhoon may change its way and go to other places. Others point out typhoons and hurricanes play a big part in nature. Trying to stop these storms could bring new problems in the future.

Learning to say no is sometimes just as good as saying yes. We should care for others, but we must also take care of ourselves first.
In the past, I was the kind of person who always said yes to everything. I said yes to things I liked, and also to things I didn’t enjoy. This was my way to please (讨好) others. I just wanted to make people happy and thought this would show I was fine with everything.
However, when I faced health problems and lost my job, I felt I was too busy and tired. Then, I realised I was trying too hard to please others, I forgot about taking care of myself.
Now, I think more before I say yes. It’s not about not making others happy; it’s about making sure I’m OK too. I’m teaching my kids that it’s fine to say no sometimes. Respecting your feelings is important for staying healthy.
50. Which is author’s people-pleasing technique?
A. Saying ok to things we feel fine.
B. Saying no to things we want to do.
C. Saying yes to things we don’t like.
51. What has changed the writer’s idea about saying yes?
A. A friend of the writer’s.
B. A word from the writer’s kids.
C. A health and job problem.
52. What is the structure of the text? (P=paragraph)
A B C
53. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Always saying yes can get you friends.
B. Saying no sometimes helps ourselves.
C. Spend more time with family.

Carla Dirlikov Canales, an opera singer from the USA, visited China in May 2023. During her visit, she finally met Zheng Xiaoying, a Chinese musician (音乐家) who she always wanted to meet.
The 94-year-old Zheng is a famous Chinese conductor (指挥家). Carla respected her not just as a conductor but an educator, too. Canales shared that she could understand Zheng well, even when they were singing together in different languages. That made her learn the word “zhiyin”, a Chinese word that means “someone who truly understands you.” As Canales put it, Zheng is her “zhiyin”.
Zheng thanked Canales for her interest in connecting with Chinese artists. Canales gave Zheng a letter to express thanks for Zheng’s dedication (奉献) to cultural exchange. In return, Zheng gave Canales a Chinese version (版本) of the classic opera Carmen and some Chinese opera recordings.
This trip showed how music and art can bring people and cultures closer together. Canales believes that Americans can learn a lot from Chinese. She hopes more people will try to understand each other’s dreams.

Apologies (道歉) are not easy, but they’re important for good relationships. A real apology shows people that you care about how they feel, and that you won’t make the same mistake again. 58
Answer for your actions.
Apologising doesn’t mean you’ve done everything wrong. For example, you could say, “I’m sorry I woke you! I thought you were usually awake at this time.” It’s good to admit (承认) what you did but also kindly explain if it wasn’t your fault. 59
Say you’re sorry.
Don’t make excuses(借口)or explain too much. 60 This way, your apology doesn’t lead to more arguments. It helps both sides calm down and understand each other better.
Respect their feelings.
61 To stop this from happening, it’s smart to really listen and show you understand how the other person is feeling. This helps rebuild trust and makes sure your apology is well-received.
62
Clearly state what you are apologising for and why it matters. This shows that you truly understand the impact of your actions.
1. Be true and clear.
1. This usually is an important first step.
1. Instead, just keep it simple and say, “I’m sorry.”

How to Say hello
To get along with someone from another country, you should start from learning how to say hello in their culture. In the UK, there are different ways for different situations.
In formal (正式) situations, a confident handshake is common. But don’t shake too hard or too weak. Remember to smile and look into your friend’s eyes. Two shakes are enough. Don’t hold their hands for too long.
Hugs and kisses are for informal situations. They are often for friends, family and young children. It’s best not to use them when you meet someone for the first time.
The traditional greeting (打招呼) line “How do you do?” is not popular now. People use “How are you doing?” or “How are you?” more often. However, don’t think that they are asking you for a long answer to those questions. It’s the same meaning as “Hello!” You can just say a “How are you?” back without answering the question.
Greeting phrases may sound differently from one place to another. In the north of the UK, you might hear “Now then?” or “Ey up?”. Don’t worry about the meaning. Just say “Hi!” or “How are you?” with a smile!

Good social skills are important for students. They are helpful when making friends. And they’re also useful for working together. Here are four key ways. First, talk nice words to break the ice with a stranger. Say hello, then add something like, “I like your coat.” Second, show interest by asking questions like hobbies. People enjoy talking about themselves. Third, talk about something general topics, like weather and food. Finally, being a good listener is a key part of good social skills! Hope these ways can help you build stronger relationships.

Will has been a great success. He easily gets students’ attention, and the kids love him. However, he may not take the place of real teachers. 第五节
25-30
Hello everyone! I’m Emma. I make short cooking videos on the internet. I started three years ago. Before that, I loved cooking at home. I watched many cooking shows online and thought, “I can share my easy recipes, too!” So I started making my cooking videos.
In the beginning, it was hard. Only a few people watched my videos. Sometimes I felt sad when no one left comments on my cooking. I posted new recipes every three weeks. But not many people watched, so I changed it to every two weeks. Now, I have many new ideas and post every week. And now I have over 5,000 followers! I’m happy I didn’t give up.
The best part is connecting with similar people. My advice for beginners is to be patient and share things you love. It takes time, but it’s really fun!

From: studentsunion@starschool.com

Dear students,
As digital technology becomes a part of our daily lives, it’s important for us to think about what we do in the digital world. Here are some simple tips on digital etiquette (礼仪) to help us be polite and responsible.
Good digital manners
1. Put your phone away in class: Don’t use your phone during lessons. Pay attention to your study.

Bad digital manners
1. Post inappropriate (不合适的) things: Be careful about what you post on social media. Sharing inappropriate things can cause problems.

Have you ever wondered how toys or tools are made these days? Actually, people now use 3D-printers to make some toys and tools! This technology started in the 1980s. Around 1999, scientists made the first lab-grown body part and successfully transplanted (移植) into a patient. This wouldn’t be possible without 3D printing. By the 2000s, home 3D printers started to appear.
So what is a 3D printer? It’s a special machine that builds objects layer (层) by layer. This is different from traditional ways of making things. In old ways, people cut away material.
Now you might be curious about how a 3D printer works? The first step is creating a digital model (模型). Then, a computer tool called a “slicer” cuts the model into many thin layers. At the same time, the “slicer” creates a set of instructions. Finally, the printer follows these instructions and builds the object layer by layer until it’s complete.
With 3D printing, you can create many things – tools, toys, and more. Just start with something simple and follow the instructions carefully. Soon you’ll create amazing objects yourself!
54. When did doctors first use 3D-printed body parts in patients?
A. In the 1980s.
B. Around 1999.
C. In the 2000s.
55. How is 3D printing different from traditional ways?
A. It builds up materials.
B. It cuts away materials.
C. It uses special materials.
56. What does a “slicer” do in 3D printing?
A. It guides the printer to work.
B. It builds the object step by step.
C. It divides the model into smaller things.
57. What is the main purpose of this text?
A. To explain 3D model design.
B. To introduce 3D printing technology.
C. To compare different kinds of 3D printers.
