A bookstore named for James Baldwin is counting down to his 100th birthday.
Baldwin Co.opened only three years ago,but the bookstore was packed on a
summer afternoon in 2024.The Black-owned shop has featured a great countdown to what
would have been the 100th birthday of James Baldwin, who, the bookstore's website
says,is "a literary giant whose works on race, identity, and social justice still have a
strong effect and make people think today".
Baldwin Co.was born in the Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans. It's the
brainchild of DI Johnson, who grew up in the city among a family of passionate readers.
"We never had much of anything else, but we always had books in home,"he recalled.
"And my dad was a huge supporter of us reading Black literature."During his childhood,
he liked reading James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time.
Johnson always visited independent bookstores when travelling. In Paris,Johnson
sought out the Shakespeare and Company, where literature lovers sometimes stand in line
to get in.While waiting,Johnson dreamed, for the first time,of opening someplace similar.
"If I was ever to open up a store,I'd call it Baldwin and Company,he recalled."I'd
want them to stand in line just like they're standing here, but at a bookstore that shows
respect for a great Black writer."Soon after that,Johnson moved back to New Orleans to
care for an aging parent. Finally, his bookstore was created there. His bookstore sells
more books by Baldwin than any other, anywhere."They're our No.1 seller,he said.
Baldwin fans visit from all over the world, but Johnson said his primary goal for
Baldwin &Co.is to serve as a community center."We held book festivals where we give

Texas will soon be the site of the world's first 3D-printed hotel,El Cosmico, which
has just begun construction in the desert north of Marfa.
Photos of the site show a massive 46.5-foot-wide and 15.5-foot-tall 3D printer laying
upon layer of sand-colored material onto the foundations, creating sand-colored walls.
This machine called the Vulcan was created by Texas-based 3D printing and robotics
company ICON.The project is done jointly by Liz Lambert who is El Cosmico's owner,
ICON and architects at Bjarke Ingels Group.Lambert tries to enlarge the existing El
Cosmico hotel, adding 43 new units and 18 residential homes on a new 40-acre property.
“I've never been able to build like this,”Lambert says..“It's a crazy way to build.”
Mockup(模型)images of the hotel's inside show cream curvilinear(曲线的)walls and
rounded wooden surfaces full of colors that reflect the surrounding desert. The hotel units
will cost between 200 and $450 per night. The structures'walls are made of concrete
called lavacrete,a kind of low-carbon material created by ICON.In addition to the hotel,
El Cosmico will include several 3D-printed homes, which are currently priced for upwards
of $2.29 million.
ICON was only founded in 2018,and its technology has since been used to build
3D-printed homes in Texas and Mexico. The company is also constructing 100 homes in
Georgetown,Texas, where residents have commented on the strength of their walls.
Beyond printing houses and hotels, the company has looked to new areas.A few years
ago,ICON released Mars Dune Alpha,a 3D-printed environment that simulates()
conditions on the Red Planet's surface.In 2022,NASA awarded ICON a $57 million
contract to support Project Olympus, which is exploring ways to build 3D-printed
structures on the moon using locally available materials. This 3D-printing technology has
the potential to help address America's affordable housing crisis.

Researchers have found an important link between paternal()engagement and
their child's successful development, both mentally and physically.
However,in Japan, where this study took place,a historical gender-based division of
labor has limited fathers'participation in childcare-related activities, impacting the
development of children.Traditionally,Japanese fathers, especially those in their 20s to
40s,have been expected to prioritize work commitments over family responsibilities.
This has resulted in limited paternal engagement in childcare. The increasing number
of mothers entering full-time employment further exacerbates the issue, leaving a gap in
familial support for childcare. With the central government advocating for paternal
involvement in response to low fertility()rates,Japanese fathers are now urged to
become co-caregivers,shifting away from their traditional role as primary breadwinners.
While recent trends have found a rise in paternal childcare involvement, the true
impact of this active participation on a child's developmental outcomes has remained largely
unexplored. This groundbreaking study led by Dr.Tsuguhiko Kato set out to uncover the
critical aspect of modern parenting."In developed countries, the time fathers spend on
childcare has increased steadily in recent decades. However, studies on the relationship
between paternal care and child outcomes remain scarce. That's what we examined in this
study,"explains Dr.Kato.The research team assessed developmental milestones in
28,050 Japanese children. These children received paternal childcare at six months of age
and were evaluated for various developmental markers at three years old."In Japan, more
and more mothers are working. So Japan is witnessing a big change happening in its
parenting culture.Fathers are increasingly getting involved in childcare-related parental
activities,"Dr.Kato says.

of developmental delay across various aspects, such as problem-solving and personal-
social skills.

A.A cultural phenomenon.
B.The labor shortage in Japan.

Edward and Thomas have been friends since childhood. They have always been
inseparable, sharing joys and sorrows. However, one day,an unexpected storm hit their
friendship.
The incident began when they were assigned a school project. They initially sat down
to plan with great enthusiasm.Edward had a meticulous (approach. He had spent
hours researching and had come up with a detailed plan that involved multiple steps and
in-depth analysis. He believed that a project of this nature required a high level of accuracy
to achieve an excellent grade.
On the other hand,Thomas had a more practical mindset. He was involved in various
other after-class activities and was worried about the limited time.He proposed a simpler
solution that would cut down on the research and analysis time significantly.
As they started discussing in the library, the tone began to change.Edward said,
"Thomas, this project is crucial for our grades. We can't just take shortcuts. My plan
ensures that we cover all the necessary aspects.Thomas argued,"But Edward,we don't
have the luxury of time.Your plan will make us spend countless hours, and we might not
even finish on time..”
The argument became heated very rapidly.Edward's face became red with anger as
he said,"You don't understand.This isn't about just finishing;it's about doing it right.
Thomas shouted back,"And you don't get it.What's the point of a great project if we
can't submit it on time?"Their voices grew louder, attracting the attention of some
classmates in the library.Edward stormed out of the library, leaving Thomas so upset.
Over the next few days, they avoided seeing each other. The atmosphere between
them was thick with tension. But as time passed,Edward's anger went down, and he
started to reflect on the situation. He realized that he had been too strict with Thomas and
that their friendship was worth more than this argument.
