As night fell,I knew I should go to bed.Instead,I opened my laptop to revisit a
research problem. If I could just make a little headway before bed,I was sure I would
sleep better and awake ready to resolve all other tasks-lectures to polish, emails to send.
But my work was fruitless, and by the time I gave up,I had only 3 hours to sleep.
I had been stuck in the same pattern since graduating school, working whenever
possible and filling the rest of my time with reflection about work.Things were getting
worse in my new role-a new assistant professor, though.I knew the potential cost of
continuing this way,but I didn't know how to change.
I started to think about a lesson I had learned.Back then,I ate constantly and
became very fat.Change seemed out of reach until I happened to go a few nights without
eating anything.I was surprised at how good this made me feel physically and mentally.
It seemed like a sustainable habit,so I decided to make it a part of my routine.
I was 3 years into after-dinner fasting()at that time.It occurred to me that
there might be a similarity between my current pattern of ceaseless work and my earlier
pattern of ceaseless eating,so I decided to establish a scheduled reset for work as well.
Every Saturday night through Monday morning,I would shut off all email notifications
(通知)to my phone and keep my laptop shut..
Almost instantly,my Saturday night habit of disabling email notifications became a
weekly highlight. On Mondays,I found myself returning to the office with a sense of
refreshment. The quality of my work improved during the day, giving me freedom to
decide whether I wanted to continue with anything in the evening.
My fasting experiences have taught me that rest is far more important than I ever
thought. My body and mind need rest from food and work in much the same way as they
need sleep.
4.How did the author most probably feel as a new assistant professor?
A.Inspired.
B.Valued.
C.Bored.
D.Occupied.
5.Why was fasting mentioned in the passage?
A.To show dieting is important.
B.To prove the author's strong will.
C.To introduce an unforgettable experience.
D.To explain how a solution was thought up.

In a new study, conducted by Ohio State University, researchers set out to explain
why children often gather more information than they need to complete a task, exploring
new ways to solve it even when they know the best solution and have done many
times before.
"Children can't seem to stop themselves from gathering more information than they
need to complete a task, even when they know exactly what they need,"Vladimir
Sloutsky,co-author of the study and professor of psychology at The Ohio State
University said.
Sloutsky thought this might be because children's brains aren't mature enough to
understand the task or pay proper attention,or because they lack the control to focus.
But,to his surprise,he found that the most likely reason for this "over-exploring"is that
working memory is not fully developed in children. Therefore, while adults can easily
remember the best way to complete a task, children are forced to question their often
correct memories and re-explore tasks they've done before.
Simply, children don't hold information they need to complete a task in their memory
for very long,the study suggests.
Speaking about one of the tasks children were asked to complete in the study, where
they were asked to identify an animal by uncovering parts of a hidden picture of them,
Sloutsky explained that even though it became obvious after a few tries that the tail was
the easiest and quickest part to uncover in order to identify the animal, the kids "just kept
uncovering more body parts before they made their choice.
"The children learned that one body part will tell them what the creature is,but they
may be concerned that they don't remember correctly.Their working memory is still
under development,"Sloutsky said."They want to resolve this uncertainty by continuing
to sample,by looking at other body parts to see if they line up with what they think.
The children in the study were aged between four and six, with more research set to
uncover exactly when children's working memory improves and gives them the confidence
to "act more like adults do"when it comes to completing tasks.
8.What likely explains kids'over-exploring a completed task?
A.Their short-term attention.
B.Their hunger for more knowledge.
C.Their underdeveloped memory.
D.Their inability to understand the task.
9.What were children asked to do in the experiment?
A.Identify the tail of an animal.
B.Confirm a creature by its body parts.
C.Uncover the picture on a creature.
D.Choose the picture of a hidden animal.

Recently researchers used a video game to understand how dynamical perceptual-
motor primitives (DPMPs)can be used in mimicking()human decision making.
A DPMP is a mathematical model that can help us understand how we adjust our
movements in response to what is happening around us.DPMPs have been used to help
us understand how we make navigational (decisions and how we move when
carrying out different tasks. This becomes particularly important in complex
environments containing other people and a combination of fixed and moving objects, such
as you might find on a sports field.
Previously,it was assumed that our brains were making detailed maps of our
surroundings, then planning how to move. But more research shows instead of making a
plan,we move naturally without planning.
To prove this, researchers developed a new video herding (game and the
participants were asked to work on two tasks, moving either a single virtual cow or a
group of cows into a pen.The researchers tracked the order in which the players drove the
cows, and fed the information into their DPMP to see whether the model could mimic the
behaviour of the human players.
Lead author,Ayman bin Kamruddin says the team's DPMP model was able to
accurately mimic how the players moved and also predict their choices.
Herding games are frequently used in studies like this because they mimic real-life
situations where people need to control other agents. In the past they were based on the
aerial view of the target animals, raising the question of whether this full view of the field
of play was affecting the findings. To solve this, the team developed a game that would
limit the participants'field of vision.
"While previous research has shown DPMPs can be used to predict crowd behaviour
or follow a moving target, ours is the first study to look at whether the model can explain
how a human guides a virtual character or robot,"Ayman bin Kamruddin says."Our
findings also suggest DPMPs could be used in search and rescue missions in daily life and
train firefighters in virtual reality.
12.What is the function of Paragraph 2?
A.To illustrate a related concept.
B.To explain the necessity of navigation.
C.To provide social background information.
D.To point out the effect of DPMPs on our decision.

How High School Juniors Can Prepare for College in Advance
Preparing for college can be a difficult task, but starting early can make it smoother
and less stressful. Here are some effective ways high school juniors can get a head start
on their college journey.
16 Academics are the cornerstone of college preparation.High school juniors
should put their grades first and take challenging courses that will strengthen their college
applications.
Make preparations for exams.17 Juniors should start studying well in advance,
using resources such as prep books, online courses, and practice tests. Many students
find it beneficial to take these exams in the spring of their junior year, allowing time for
retakes if necessary.
Develop extra-curricular (involvement.18 So Juniors should not only
pay attention to their grades but also engage in extra-curricular activities. They should
focus on a few key activities that they are passionate about, whether it's sports, clubs,or
part-time jobs.Leadership roles and commitment in these activities are particularly
impressive to admissions committees.
Take care of mental and physical health.Preparing for college can be stressful,so
it's important for juniors to take care of their mental and physical health.19
Additionally, practicing stress-relief techniques can help manage anxiety.
Research colleges.Juniors should begin researching colleges to understand what each
institution offers and to identify which schools are fit for their goals and interests.Factors
to consider include location, size, academic programs, campus culture, and financial aid
options.20
By taking these steps, high school juniors can position themselves for success in the
college admissions process.Starting early not only reduce stress but also allows students

At night,I think about my mother and hope she's asleep. She lives alone in the little
town of Golden,Colorado,in a house high up on a hill.I'm out in L.A.,so there's not
much I can do-except worry.She won't move here,and I can't visit her as often as I'd
like. But I know she would turn to the police for help if necessary.
I called a little while ago.She said it had been snowing all day,and her nose was
running non-stop.I kept thinking of her, sick and alone in that empty house.I had this
little fantasy about how,if I lived there,I'd run out to get her some chicken noodle soup.
Then I came up with a great idea.
I remember there was a little Chinese restaurant in the town.So I dialed Information
and asked the operator to search the Golden listings for Chinese restaurants. But the
operator told me he needed an actual name.I kept that operator on the line, inventing
dozens of listings for him to check. It's incredible that the operator didn't disconnect me.
I finally hit on the right name:Golden Peach.
I went ahead and paid the extra charge for the operator to connect me,and I ordered
the soup, plus egg rolls and stir-fried vegetables. It was an entire Chinese banquet()
for one tiny lady. With the snow piling up,I figured she could use the leftovers, plus at
that point I guess I was sort of hungry myself.I charged the whole order to my credit
card, including a tip to the delivery guy. Then I just sat back, feeling pleased with
myself, and waited for my phone to ring.
I glanced at my watch.I worried Mom might have fallen asleep. But I didn't think
the delivery guy's arrival would scare this little old lady.I only thought about how
surprised my mom was going to be.I wished I could see the look on her face.
