A bookstore named for James Baldwin is counting down to his 100th birthday.
Baldwin Co.opened only three years ago,but the bookstore was packed on a
summer afternoon in 2024.The Black-owned shop has featured a great countdown to what
would have been the 100th birthday of James Baldwin, who, the bookstore's website
says,is "a literary giant whose works on race, identity, and social justice still have a
strong effect and make people think today".
Baldwin Co.was born in the Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans. It's the
brainchild of DJ Johnson, who grew up in the city among a family of passionate readers.
"We never had much of anything else, but we always had books in home,"he recalled.
"And my dad was a huge supporter of us reading Black literature."During his childhood,
he liked reading James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time.
Johnson always visited independent bookstores when travelling. In Paris,Johnson
sought out the Shakespeare and Company, where literature lovers sometimes stand in line
to get in.While waiting,Johnson dreamed, for the first time,of opening someplace similar.

After 112 years,Chinook salmon()are swimming freely in the Klamath Basin in
Oregon. On October 16,2024,biologists with the Oregon Department of Fish and
Wildlife(ODFW)spotted the fish above the former site of the J.C.Boyle Dam in the
Upper Klamath River.
"We saw a large fish the day before rise to surface in the Klamath River, but we only
saw a dorsal fin(背鳍),”says Mark Hereford, leader of ODFW's Klamath Fisheries
Reintroduction Project."I thought, was that a salmon,or maybe another kind of large
fish?"But when the team returned on October 16 and 17,they were able to confirm the
fall-run Chinook-making them the first to spot the species in the region since 1912.
The return of the salmon comes less than two months after the end of the dam
removals in California and Oregon,an effort that took decades of advocacy by the locals
who have deep ties to the Chinook salmon. The J.C.Boyle Dam was one of four built
between the early 1900s and 1962,all of which had blocked the salmon's journey between
the Klamath Basin and the Pacific Ocean. Each of those dams was recently deconstructed
in the largest dam removal project in the United States history, which has restored the
river to its natural,free-flowing state.Ron Reed,a local traditional fisherman, participated in
the campaign for dam removal, advocating that the river's restoration would help salmon
recover. He isn't surprised the fish have returned so quickly to their ancestral waters.

真题密卷·备扌
In one sad case, tens of thousands of Chinook salmon died off in the span of days in
2002,as the water quality in the dammed Klamath River got worse due to the lack of
flow. This incident directly led to decades of advocacy from the locals and conservation
groups.In November 2022,the government approved the $500 million project.By
January,2024,the four dams had been deconstructed. For the first time in more than a
century, the river flowed freely by the end of August.
8.What's Hereford's initial attitude to his spotting a salmon in the Klamath River?
A.Unfavorable.B.Tolerant.

A.The dams blocked their migration.
B.They couldn't adjust to the environment.
C.They were overfished by local fishermen.
D.They competed violently with other big fish.
10.What caused the dam removal campaign?
A.The inconvenience brought by the dams.
B.The mass salmon deaths in the Klamath River.
C.The salmon's quick return from the Pacific Ocean.
D.The government's call for a conservation project.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text?

Researchers from Sandia National Laboratories are developing a backup navigation
(system(BNS)for aircraft by using something we rarely think about:The invisible
web of radio signals that constantly surrounds us.Their experimental technology could
serve as a safety net when GPS-the system we've come to rely on for everything from
landing planes to finding the nearest coffee shop-becomes unreliable.
"We're not trying to replace GPS,explains Jennifer Sanderson, the lead researcher
at Sandia,in a media release."We're just trying to assist it in situations where it's degraded or
risky and situations that can put pilots and passengers at risk.
While GPS has become the gold standard for navigation,it's not fault-free.Pilots
flying near conflict zones increasingly find their GPS systems unreliable.Even closer to
home, illegal "jammers"-devices that flood GPS frequencies with meaningless signals-
can be purchased online despite being against the law.Perhaps more worrying is a
technique called "spoofing",where false GPS signals trick receivers into showing
incorrect locations. If this sounds far-fetched,consider this:the same technology is
already being used by players trying to cheat at Pokemon Go."There're actual apps you
can download that allow you to spoof your location,"says Jennifer. While harmless in a
mobile game, this technology could have serious consequences if used against aircraft.

英语试题(四)第4页(共8页)
The research team's approach is ingenious in its simplicity:instead of relying alone
on GPS satellites, why not use the other countless radio signals already floating through
our skies?Cellphone towers and non-GPS communications satellites constantly send radio
frequency waves that could be used to navigate the plane. To test this idea, the team sent
their experimental equipment skyward via weather balloon, reaching heights of up to
80,000 feet. That's roughly three times higher than commercial aircraft typically fly.
Their equipment,housed in an ordinary-looking Styrofoam cooler,included
specialized antennas (designed to detect and measure various radio signals.By
analyzing how these radio waves become compressed()or stretched as they travel,
the researchers can potentially calculate a plane's position and speed. Will the experiment
support the idea?
12.What does BNS rely on?
A.The GPS.
B.The web.
C.The radio signals.
D.The aircraft technology.
13.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The illegal purchases online.
B.The dangers of false signals.
C.The power of GPS technology.
D.The necessity of developing BNS.
14.What does the underlined word "ingenious"in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Efficient.
B.Temporary.
C.Creative.
D.Conventional.
15.What might the author continue talking about?
A.The relevant test results.
B.Aircraft navigation safety.
C.Other uses of radio signals.
D.Spoofing prevention methods.

Edward and Thomas have been friends since childhood. They have always been
inseparable, sharing joys and sorrows. However, one day,an unexpected storm hit their
friendship.
The incident began when they were assigned a school project. They initially sat down
to plan with great enthusiasm.Edward had a meticulous()approach.He had spent
hours researching and had come up with a detailed plan that involved multiple steps and
in-depth analysis. He believed that a project of this nature required a high level of accuracy
to achieve an excellent grade.
On the other hand,Thomas had a more practical mindset. He was involved in various
other after-class activities and was worried about the limited time.He proposed a simpler
solution that would cut down on the research and analysis time significantly.
As they started discussing in the library, the tone began to change.Edward said,
"Thomas, this project is crucial for our grades. We can't just take shortcuts. My plan
ensures that we cover all the necessary aspects."Thomas argued,"But Edward,we don't
have the luxury of time.Your plan will make us spend countless hours, and we might not
even finish on time.”
The argument became heated very rapidly.Edward's face became red with anger as
he said,"You don't understand.This isn't about just finishing;it's about doing it right."
Thomas shouted back,"And you don't get it.What's the point of a great project if we
can't submit it on time?"Their voices grew louder, attracting the attention of some
classmates in the library.Edward stormed out of the library, leaving Thomas so upset.
Over the next few days, they avoided seeing each other. The atmosphere between
them was thick with tension. But as time passed,Edward's anger went down, and he
started to reflect on the situation. He realized that he had been too strict with Thomas and
that their friendship was worth more than this argument.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day after school,Edward found Thomas sitting alone in the school garden.
