For many,denim is a type of cloth,but for London-based artist Ian Berry,it's a
creative medium. For the last two decades,Berry has used the navy blue cloth to create
various portraits(),and even photorealistic descriptions of California. And his latest
creation continues to reveal the unexpected and innovative ways denim can be used.Titled
Secret Garden and currently on display at the Garden Museum in London, this work
reimagines a peaceful setting with a fish pond, flowers, and plants-all made from
recycled denim jeans.
The Secret Garden show was first exhibited at the Children's Museum of the Arts in
New York in 2017 and has since been displayed in various site-specific locations and
galleries worldwide.Originally designed for a young audience,Berry aimed to inspire
children to reflect on our interaction with nature.
"The idea came from thinking many kids don't have their own gardens and thinking
of community gardens located away in between buildings and trying to inspire them to
seek them out,"Berry says."It also gave the opportunity to talk about sustainability as
well as helping young minds think about where things come from."The artist even
showed the kids a cotton plant to explain where jeans come from."It was amazing to see
so many confused at the idea,"he recalls."It enabled educators to talk about how the
show turned plants to pants, then back to plants again.
While the most recent Secret Garden show isn't specifically designed for children,it
still arises a childlike sense of wonder.Visitors can walk through the denim garden path
and find plants hanging above them.Various plants and flowers are described in shades of
indigo(靛蓝i物),including roses,alocasias,begonias,and cacti.There's even a
peaceful pond at the heart of the garden, featuring denim Koi fish, and a central water
feature.Every area of the garden showcases such an impressive level of detail that it's easy
to forget the entire show is handmade from denim.
4.What did Ian Berry use denim for?
A.Fabric for making clothes.
B.Covers for various portraits.
C.Bags for flowers and plants.
D.Materials for his works of art.

Roads with variable speed limits, also known as smart motorways, are common in
countries including the US,UK and Germany.Normally,rule-based systems monitor the
number of vehicles on one of these roads and adjust speeds accordingly. One such road is a
27-kilometre section of the I-24 freeway near Nashville,Tennessee, which was experi-
encing a problem that disturbs many busy roads:When there are too many vehicles,
phantom traffic jams(虚假交通堵塞)appear when drivers slow vehicles and risk crashes
as fast-moving vehicles come up behind.
To address this,Daniel Work at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and his
teammates trained an AI on historical traffic data to monitor cameras and make decisions
on speed limits, using it in the I-24 control room in February.Initially, the AI was tested
with the existing software-not having control over limits, but telling operators what it
would have decided-and faced teething problems."They look at it and for the first 5
minutes everybody's like thumbs()up,and then they start going to thumbs midway
and then it's thumbs down.So hey,it failed in the first 10 minutes, says Work.
After some adaptations, the team launched a new system in March that has been able
to operate unaided ever since. The AI works 98 per cent of the time, and will occasionally
call for a change in speed limit that is less than 10 miles per hour,in line with federal law.
"I think that we're just scratching()the surface of a whole new way to operate
freeways, says Work."It's just absolutely transformational how these systems operate.
Anything that we can do to reduce the number of crashes that happen on that roadway,is
worth doing. It is in desperate need of attention, and that's what drove the whole project
from the first place:heavy jams.Sitting by and doing nothing is not good for anybody.
8.What's the problem of the 27-kilometre section of the I-24 freeway?
A.Variable speed limits.
B.Potential traffic crashes.
C.Too many vehicles.
D.Vehicles'moving too fast.
9.How was the performance of the AI on historical traffic data?
A.Inefficient.
B.Effective.

Astronomers have uncovered the feeding schedule of a supermassive black hole,
revealing that it consumes material about every three and a half years. This discovery
provides critical insights into the behaviour of these universal forces, deepening scientists'
understanding of the powerful formations that shape the universe.
A team of astronomers used three space telescopes to make these observations,
including Nasa's Chandra X-ray Observatory, with findings published in The Astrophysical
Journal Letters on Wednesday. The subject of this study was a supermassive black hole located
at the centre of a galaxy()about 860 million light-years from Earth.
With a mass of about 50 million times that of the Sun,this black hole was observed
engaging in an interaction with a star too close to its immense gravitational pull.
Astronomers first noticed the black hole's activity when the galaxy it resides in
experienced a significant increase in brightness in 2018.They identified this as a tidal
disruption()event,which occurs when a star is torn apart by the intense
gravitational forces of a black hole.
As the star was pulled apart, its material heated up,producing X-ray and ultraviolet
(紫外线的)light that was observed by the telescopes..This eventually faded, suggesting
that the black hole had consumed the matter. However, astronomers were surprised
when, about two years later, the X-ray and UV light from the galaxy flashed again. This
unexpected phenomenon suggested that the star had been only partially consumed during
its first encounter, with more material being taken away as it neared the black hole again.
"Initially,we thought this was a garden-variety case of a black hole totally pulling a
star apart,"said Thomas Wevers from the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.
"But instead, the star appears to be living to die another day."
12.What's the significance of the discovery of the feeding schedule of a black hole?
A.It led to scientists'discovery of a supermassive black hole.
B.It made the formation of the black hole known to scientists.
C.It changed scientists'views about the influence by black holes.
D.It broadened scientists'knowledge of the power of the universe.
13.What does the underlined word "immense"in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Unsteady.
B.Occasional.
C.Huge.
D.Unusual.

14.What does the author imply in Paragraph 4?
A.The black holes had fitful forces.
B.The star partly survived black holes.
C.The star had the ability of rebirth.
D.The star shone before being pulled apart.
15.What do Thomas Wevers'words in the last paragraph indicate?
A.The new discovery confirmed scientists'previous theory.
B.All the discovery needed further information to be proven.
C.All stars in the universe will be consumed by the black holes.
D.Scientists had a new recognition of the black holes and stars.

Effective cross-cultural communication goes beyond the mere exchange of words. It
involves a deep understanding of cultural adaptability.16 In this global dance of
diplomacy(),the mastery of certain strategies can significantly enhance the efficiency, and
effectiveness of communication.
At the heart of effective cross-cultural communication lies cultural awareness, the
foundation upon which all other strategies are built.17 It involves a deep understanding and
respect for these differences, recognizing how they influence behaviors, and
communication styles. This awareness is crucial in removing potential misunderstandings
and enhancing an environment of respect.
In cross-cultural communication, active listening goes beyond the basic act of hearing
words spoken by another person. It involves fully engaging with the speaker, understanding
their message in context.Active listening is fundamental in building trust, respect, and
understanding across cultural divides.18 It's a demonstration of respect and a
powerful tool in overcoming the complexities of cross-cultural communication.
In the rich aspect of global interactions, where diverse languages and cultures co-exist,the
value of clarity and simplicity in communication cannot be overstated.19 By
prioritizing clear and straightforward communication,we can significantly reduce the risk
of misunderstandings and ensure that our messages are understood as intended.
20 Understanding and correctly interpreting these silent signals can be as
significant as the spoken word.Non-verbal communication includes body language, facial
expressions, and so on.All of them can vary dramatically from one culture to another.
Cultural norms()determine what is considered appropriate or offensive in non-verbal
communication, making it a field ripe for misunderstandings.
A.Listening positively is more than a skill.
B.Language acts as both a bridge and a barrier.

A young boy desired to be an artist. He studied in the local school as his mother
knew the significance of education in life. But she was against his dream of becoming an
artist. However,as each day passed, his dream became more passionate.
Due to the circumstances, even buying some new colours would be a luxury. With
time flying by,this wish grew into a desire.Nevertheless,he didn't know how to
convince his mother as his mother was his whole world after his father died.Considering
the hard work his mother did to survive,he didn't want his mother to worry.
A few days later,he was determined to be an artist. The young boy had a drawing
file and some colours in a poor state though they could be used for colouring purpose. He
wandered in those hills to gather inspiration as from the very beginning nature had been
his guide. Then he stopped at a beautiful spot and sat at those green grass at the bottom.
After a few seconds,he fell asleep and in his dream he was creating a master piece of art
that shook down the whole world. After some time,he woke up and went back. The
following day,he read about a competition that was being held in the town.He got the
perfect opportunity to realize his desire but he was in a dilemma().For the competition,
he needed paints and some brushes but he didn't have enough money for the same.He
didn't have the courage to ask his mother for money. In the evening when his mother
returned from work,he saw that his mother had a few bundles of notes and that money
would be enough for him to buy those materials.
The next morning he begged his mother for the money to buy painting materials. At
first his mother refused, but the boy insisted, and promised to go to his mother's work-
