例:问题 "When did the sports meeting start?" 原文 "The school sports meeting started at 8:00 a.m. last Friday." At 8:00 a.m. last Friday.
例:问题 "What made the boy happy?" 原文 "The boy felt happy because he got a gift from his father." Getting a gift from his father.
针对 "What's the main idea of the passage?"
- 疑问句的答案要符合句式要求(如why开头的问题,答案常用because引导);
- 数字、时间、地名的书写要和原文一致;
- 主谓一致、时态正确(原文用一般过去时,答案不能用一般现在时);
- 名词单复数、代词指代准确;

We moved to a beautiful two-storey (两层) old house. The house was built in 1905. It was repaired in 1997.
At first, really small things began to happen that didn’t make me believe that anything was wrong, but as time went on, things started becoming stranger and stranger. Early on, something was missing, and later would be found somewhere else. I just thought I had forgotten where I put it, or perhaps my daughter was playing around with things. Then later on I would hear strange sounds when nobody was at home but me...Yet it was an old house, and sometimes old houses did make small noises. So again, I didn’t really mind.
Then things that I couldn’t explain started happening. It was last November and I was at home alone cleaning the house. When I was sweeping the kitchen floor, I felt a very cold wind blow my hair. I thought the kitchen window must have been opened, but when I checked it, it was closed. The windows were new, and there was no way any cold air came in.
We all felt very strange and moved away from there in October, 2002. I was never really frightened (害怕的). It was just strange, like something or someone was trying to get my attention or something.
1.How many floors did the old house have?
2.When was the old house repaired?
3.What happened when the writer was at home alone according to Paragraph 2?

Hi, Tom,
Thanks for your message and I am glad that you wrote to me for ideas.
I remember when I was learning English, I felt uncomfortable about speaking. I could remember lots of words and knew grammar rules, but speaking was difficult. I now feel a lot more confident about speaking, so here are some ideas that I have taken from my own experience.
Don’t worry about making mistakes. Other people will still know your meaning and they probably won’t notice your mistakes.
Use every chance you get to speak. For example, it’s a good idea to use only English in class and not to speak to your classmates in your own language. At home, you should also try practicing new words and grammar learnt in class.
Think about extra speaking practice outside the classroom. You can join a conversation group, such as the chat groups in the study centre. They are free to join.
Practice speaking online. There are lots of websites where you can communicate with someone from all around the world.
I hope this helps you and please come to me if you have other problems.
Best wishes,
Eliza

This 12-year-old Girl Built a Robot to Find Plastics in the Ocean
Anna Du was walking along the beach when she noticed plastics there. She reached down to pick them up, and quickly realized there were many more tiny pieces than she could deal with. It seemed impossible to clean them all up.
Du, 12 years old at the time, tried to solve the problem like any good scientist—first, by doing a little research. That’s how she learned that 8 million tons of plastics end up in the oceans every year.
Then she got to work building something that could help solve the problem; a remote-operated vehicle(遥控潜水器), or ROV. Her ROV can move through water and find plastics on the ocean floor.
The actually cool part of Du’s ROV is the detection(探测) system. She uses a camera along with three different kinds of light to find the plastics. She also uses visible(可见的) light to find unnatural colors that might make the plastics stand out.
“She has a very good engineering sense to break down a problem like this and then go after it,” says engineer Casey Machado. “It sounds simple, but it’s a level of thinking that’s really amazing. ”
Du started attending public events and workshops at a university when she was five years old, and so she picked up the engineering skills necessary to build her ROV. She says actually getting her ROV to move through water well was not easy. She failed many times, but she never gave up trying and testing.
When asked about future plans, she mentions wanting to address the effects of climate(气候) change. “I think there are a lot of problems that could be solved with new inventions,” says Du.
Du thanks her parents, who for years have taken her to student outreach activities, for supporting her interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). She says she has been able to meet students and scientists there.
“I know I want to be an engineer because I like building things to help solve world problems,” says Du. “But I’m not sure what kind of engineer I want to be yet.”

Antarctica (南极洲) is known for being a large land of ice and snow, a place too cold for most life. However, the land is slowly starting to turn warm. According to The Guardian, the Antarctic has shown a new high temperature for the first time on record, raising fears of climate change in the world’s coldest place.
On Feb. 9, Brazilian researchers at Seymour Island reported a temperature of 20.75 ℃ on the icy land of Antarctica. It was almost a full degree higher than the past record of 19.8 ℃, taken on Signy Island in January 1982.
This record-breaking reading (数据) was taken at a watch station in the northern part of Antarctica. According to Brazilian scientist Carlos Schaefer, the temperature was recorded during a 20-year-long research project. The purpose of this project is to study the effect that climate change has on the permafrost (永冻土) within the area. Permafrost is the earth that stays icy for at least two years.
Although this is a first record high for Antarctica, Schaefer pointed out that “We can’t use this to predict climate changes in the future. It’s simply a sign that something different is happening in that area.”
But in fact, the last high temperature reading was around 19 ℃. These higher temperatures can cause ice in Antarctic area to melt (融化). This melted ice leads to a rise in sea levels that can put the coast areas in danger. It’s believed to be behind an alarming drop of more than 50 percent in the number of penguins, which are dependent on sea ice.
Like American writer Ernest Hemingway once said, “The Earth is a fine place and worth fighting for.” We should do everything we can to help save our planet. Otherwise, it may become too hot for us to live in.
6.What has happened to the Antarctica leading to fears of climate change again?

UK vs US manners
Britons may like to complain a lot, but they rarely do so in the moment, explains BBC writer Ruth Margolis. They would rather grumble afterward.
This is because Britons hate to put someone out and cause a scene. Margolis writes: “For instance, I’m much more comfortable just leaving that lump of raw chicken on my plate [instead of complaining to restaurant staff]. But beware: if this kind of thing happens when you’re dining with an American, they will most likely speak up on your behalf and not understand why you find this humiliating.”
In a BBC blog post comparing cultural differences between the UK and the US, Margolis mentions a few other things that Americans like to do that are offensive to Britons.
Not making introductions
Americans rarely remember to introduce a new friend to their friends at parties. Strangers are supposed to introduce themselves. But Margolis says most Britons dislike this approach because “talking to strangers without a facilitator gives them a stomachache”.
‘Quite’ good
Using “quite” to mean “very” happens a lot in the US. But if you are invited to a dinner party in a British household, don’t describe the meal as “quite good” if you want to express high praise. To Britons’ ears, “quite” detracts from the “good”: the meal was passable but could have been better.
Money Talk
Americans can talk about money subjects for hours without feeling uncomfortable. For Britons, says Margolis: “talking about how much we make is unthinkable - only less so than discussing our feelings”.
Over-politeness
In the US, it is not unusual to be greeted by a perfect stranger as “honey” or “sweetie”. But Margolis says Britons find put-on friendliness, especially in stores, deeply irritating. “It’s not that I want shop assistants to be actively rude. But neither do I want to expend energy responding to someone who’s been paid to ask: ‘How are you today?’” says Margolis.
1.When do Britons prefer to do if they want to complain something?
2.How many examples does the writer tell us?
3.Why do most Britons dislike the American approach of strangers introducing themselves at parties?
4.What does the use of the word "quite" imply when describing a meal in a British household?
5.What do Britons think of “honey” or “sweetie” in stores?
1.They like to complain afterward instead of in the moment. 2.Four. 3.Because talking to strangers without a facilitator makes them uncomfortable. 4.In a British household, using "quite" to describe a meal means that the meal was passable but could have been better, and it detracts from the overall praise. 5.They feel very irritating.
They like to complain afterward instead of in the moment.
Four.
Because talking to strangers without a facilitator makes them uncomfortable.
In a British household, using "quite" to describe a meal means that the meal was passable but could have been better, and it detracts from the overall praise.
They feel very irritating.

Untangle this mini mystery
HBO’s new limited dramatic crime series The Night Of will keep you on edge as it unfolds the fate of Nasir “Naz” Khan, an American-born college student of Pakistani descent from the New York borough of Queens, trying to fit into a United States of America that is often hostile.
A night that begins with promise ends up going very wrong for the shy and mild-mannered Naz, played by Riz Ahmed. He takes his father’s cab without permission to go to a party in Manhattan, hoping to meet girls. And when an attractive, but troubled, young woman named Andrea Cornish gets into the cab believing he’s on duty, Naz can’t turn her away.
But happiness soon turns to horror. After a debauched night of sex and drugs at her place, Nasir wakes up to find Andrea dead, the victim of multiple stab wounds. Did he kill her? Later-shown ample evidence seems to confirm that he did, but we don’t know for sure.
Based on the BBC series Criminal Justice (2008), the eight-part show is on the surface procedural, yet it has something of the feel of the crime-based podcast Serial (2014-) or the Netflix documentary Making a Murderer (2015-) as it explores a tangled case, with elements of racism and a justice system overburdened by human failings.
“Growing up as a Muslim-American, post-9/11, you kind of have a very (unpleasant) relationship toward the authorities; you are told you are automatically a suspect,” Ahmed says. “It certainly does play into what you can expect in the criminal justice system. People view you as a threat.”
Rather than present a carousel of would-be killers as so many prime-time whodunits are prone to do, The Night Of invites the viewer to ponder the fate of its single key suspect without trying to pull the wool over their eyes in the process. Did he do it? If he didn’t, who did and why? Is the soon-to-be-retired police detective (Bill Camp) making too many easy assumptions? Will the anti-Muslim tensions in the community further hamper Nasir’s chances of acquittal?
The Night Of dutifully delves into the social and political undertones present in American criminal cases – along with the emotional carnage they cause – as it explores the police investigation and legal proceedings. And it takes on added layers when it follows Nasir to prison, where he is the proverbial fish out of water.
The miniseries unfolds in leisurely fashion – maybe too leisurely for some viewers. But it’s hard not to admire how carefully observed and precisely rendered the scenes are. You could do worse than to lock yourself away to watch this carefully put together masterpiece.
6.What is the main character’s name in The Night Of?
7.What event causes the night to go wrong for Naz?
8.How many parts are there in The Night Of?
9.What does The Night Of mainly talk about?
10.Who will be unhappy after 9/11 in America?
6.Nasir “Naz” Khan. 7.Naz takes his father’s cab without permission to go to a party in Manhattan. 8.Eight. 9.It talks about the social and political undertones present in American criminal cases and the police investigation and legal proceedings. 10.Muslim-Americans.
6.由第一段第一句“The Night Of will keep you on edge as it unfolds the fate of Nasir “Naz” Khan”可知“《罪夜之奔》揭示了纳西尔“纳兹”汗的命运”。 Nasir “Naz” Khan.
7.由第二段第二句话“He takes his father’s cab without permission to go to a party in Manhattan”可知“Naz擅自乘坐父亲的出租车去曼哈顿参加一个派对”故答案为Naz takes his father’s cab without permission to go to a party in Manhattan.
8.由第四段第一句“Based on the BBC series Criminal Justice (2008), the eight-part show is on the surface procedural l”可知“Based on the BBC series Criminal Justice (2008), the eight-part show is on the surface procedural”故答案为Eight.
9.由倒数第二段第一句“The Night Of dutifully delves into the social and political undertones present in American criminal cases … as it explores the police investigation and legal proceedings.” It talks about the social and political undertones present in American criminal cases and the police investigation and legal proceedings.
10.由第五段第一句“Growing up as a Muslim-American, post-9/11, you kind of have a very (unpleasant) relationship toward the authorities”可知“作为一个穆斯林美国人,在9/11之后,你对当局有一种非常(不愉快)的关系”故答案为Muslim-Americans.

- 疑问句的答案要符合句式要求(如why开头的问题,答案常用because引导);
- 数字、时间、地名的书写要和原文一致;
- 主谓一致、时态正确(原文用一般过去时,答案不能用一般现在时);
- 名词单复数、代词指代准确;

4.What was the writer doing when he/she felt a cold wind blow his/her hair?
5.How did the writer feel about the old house?

Hi, Tom,
Thanks for your message and I am glad that you wrote to me for ideas.
Best wishes,
Eliza

The People’s Republic of China celebrated the 70th anniversary of its founding in October, 2019. China held its largest military parade(阅兵仪式) in Tian’anmen Square on October 1st. People from home and abroad watched the military parade through different ways. They were all surprised at China’s progress. Looking back at the past, the great changes have taken place in China.
In the past, most people lived a hard life. Many people died of wars and hunger. Generations(几代人) of the family ever lived in a very small house. Usually, children couldn’t have their own rooms and the younger seldom had new clothes. During the 1960s to 1970s, China fell far behind because of many kinds of reasons.
However, in 1978, China started to carry out the reform(改革) and opening-up policy(政策). It was an important turning point for Chinese people. Since then, China has developed rapidly.
Now, people’s life is very different from that in the past. The country tries its best to help poor areas so that all Chinese people can live a good and happy life. China also pays great attention to compulsory(义务的) education. Everything is changing in a surprising way.
So we have very good reasons to believe that China’s future will be better and better.

With the rapid development of science and technology, the ways of communication among people have changed a lot in the past years.
As we all know, in ancient times, people communicated with others who were far away only by writing letters. It took a very long time to get the message.
In the 19th century, telegraph was invented, but it was not widely used. The letter was still the commonest way at that time. In 1836, John Coker invented the first electromagnetic telegraph (电磁电报机) in the world, and then telegraph came into being and was popular. It was much faster than letters, bringing great convenience to people.
As time goes by, telephones become increasingly widely used. Now, phones have been developed as mobile phones, fixed telephones, Internet telephones and other categories. They are important communication tools in modern information society.
In addition, network communication is popular as well. It is especially widely welcomed by the youth. A great number of people communicate with others on the Internet by using software (软件), such as QQ, Wechat, BBS and MMS. Using software is easy. A computer which is connected to the network is enough. In China, Wechat has become the most popular communication software nowadays. Wechat, known as Weixin in China, is a mobile phone text and voice messaging communication software which is developed by Tencent. People who make video calls can not only hear the sound, but also see the people they talk to.

This patient’s whole family has been infected with coronavirus—her mother and brother have already died and her father is still seriously ill. I was deeply moved by her courage and understood for the first time in my life the weight of my duty. I have to help others to live on.
When I treated my first coronavirus patient on January 26th, my only worry was that my knowledge in treating coronavirus patients was not enough. Many friends of mine keep asking why I’m not frightened. I think it takes no special courage to treat coronavirus. It is my duty to save other people’s lives and I was trained to do this. When you see a family suffering from coronavirus and seriously sick patients worrying about their dying relatives, the only thing you want to do is to try to help them.
I treat coronavirus patients as ordinary patients, never making them feel they are dangerous. I believe this mental (精神的) support is important to those suffering from loneliness and despair. After a day’s work, when lying in bed at the hospital, the most beautiful sound I want to hear is my two-year-old son’s voice.

(2018·江苏淮安·中考真题)This is such a heart-warming piece of news in the cold winter. Some days ago, the temperature was only—6℃ in Kaifeng, Henan. Someone ordered 50 cups of warm porridge (粥) through Meituan App and noted “Please give the porridge to those sanitation (环卫) workers who are clearing snow on the road nearby and those delivery (递送) men who are delivering food.” When the porridge shop owner received the order, he was moved by the note and provided 60 cups.
The story didn’t end here. As soon as the food delivery man got the big order, he shared it with his workmates so that they could also get paid. Finally, Meituan returned the money to the porridge buyer, Mr. Zhang and gave him a reward of Y500. Although he had to raise his newly-born baby and pay for his house every month, Mr. Zhang said he would surely continue delivering love.
The kind help also encouraged many other citizens in Kaifeng. This summer, volunteers are sending cool drinks every day.
Similar stories have happened in many other places in China. Outdoor workers in different cities are able to enjoy free and caring help. Lots of “love posts” are providing “coolness” in hot summer and “warmth” in cold winter. Just as a citizen of Kaifeng said, “I feel deeply moved and warm in heart.”
In fact, we get love and give love every day. Love delivery makes our life better and more beautiful.
